Abstract:Cyclic curves, i.e. curves fixed by a cyclic collineation group, play a central role in the investigation of cyclic arcs in Desarguesian projective planes. In this paper, the genus of a cyclic curve arising from a cyclic k-arc of Singer type is computed.

Abstract:In this paper we begin to study curves on a weighted projective plane with one trivial weight, ${\mathbb P}(1,m,n)$, by determining the genus of curves of Fermat type. These are curves defined by a ``homogeneous'' polynomial analagous to the one from Fermat's last theorem. We begin by finding local coordinates for the standard affine cover of the plane, and then prove that the curve is smooth. This is done by pulling the curve up to the surface's desingularization. Then a map from the curve to ${\mathbb P^1}$ is constructed, and it's ramification divisor is determined. We conclude by applying Hurwitz's theorem to this map to obtain $C$'s genus.

Abstract:Fix integers $r\geq 4$ and $i\geq 2$. Let $C$ be a non-degenerate, reduced and irreducible complex projective curve in $\mathbb P^r$, of degree $d$, not contained in a hypersurface of degree $\leq i$. Let $p_a(C)$ be the arithmetic genus of $C$. Continuing previous research, under the assumption $d\gg \max\{r,i\}$, in the present paper we exhibit a Castelnuovo bound $G_0(r;d,i)$ for $p_a(C)$. In general, we do not know whether this bound is sharp. However, we are able to prove it is sharp when $i=2$, $r=6$ and $d\equiv 0,3,6$ (mod $9$). Moreover, when $i=2$, $r\geq 9$, $r$ is divisible by $3$, and $d\equiv 0$ (mod $r(r+3)/6$), we prove that if $G_0(r;d,i)$ is not sharp, then for the maximal value of $p_a(C)$ there are only three possibilities. The case in which $i=2$ and $r$ is not divisible by $3$ has already been examined in the literature. We give some information on the extremal curves.

Abstract:The study of algebraic curves $\cX$ with numerous automorphisms in relation to their genus $g(\cX)$ is a well-established area in Algebraic Geometry. In 1995, Irokawa and Sasaki \cite{Sasaki} gave a complete classification of curves over $\mathbb{C}$ with an automorphism of order $N \geq 2g(\mathcal{X}) + 1$. Precisely, such curves are either hyperelliptic with $N=2g(\cX)+2$ with $g(\cX)$ even, or are quotients of the Fermat curve of degree $N$ by a cyclic group of order $N$. Such a classification does not hold in positive characteristic $p$, the curve with equation $y^2=x^p-x$ being a well-studied counterexample. This paper successfully classifies curves with a cyclic automorphism group of order $N$ at least $2g(\mathcal{X}) + 1$ in positive characteristic $p \neq 2$, offering the positive characteristic counterpart to the Irokawa-Sasaki result. The possibility of wild ramification in positive characteristic has presented a few challenges to the investigation.

Abstract:The distribution of degree $d$ points on curves is well understood, especially for low degrees. We refine this study to include information on the Galois group in the simplest interesting case: $d = 3$. For curves of genus at least 5, we show cubic points with Galois group $C_3$ arise from well-structured morphisms, along with providing computable tests for the existence of such morphisms. We prove the same for curves of lower genus under some geometric or arithmetic assumptions.

Abstract:Working over imperfect fields, we give a comprehensive classification of genus-one curves that are regular but not geometrically regular, extending the known case of geometrically reduced curves. The description is given intrinsically, in terms of twisted forms of standard models with respect to infinitesimal group scheme actions, and not via extrinsic equations. The main new idea is to analyze and exploit moduli for fields of representatives in Cohen's Structure Theorem. The results serve for the understanding of genus-one fibrations over higher-dimensional bases.

Abstract:Let $p\ge 7$ be a prime, and $m\ge 5$ an integer. A natural generalization of Bring's curve valid over any field $\mathbb{K}$ of zero characteristic or positive characteristic $p$, is the algebraic variety $V$ of $\textrm{PG}(m-1,\mathbb{K})$ which is the complete intersection of the projective algebraic hypersurfaces of homogeneous equations $x_1^k+\cdots +x_m^{k}=0$ with $1\leq k\leq m-2$. In positive characteristic, we also assume $m\le p-1$. Up to a change of coordinates in $\textrm{PG}(m-1,\mathbb{K})$, we show that $V$ is a projective, absolutely irreducible, non-singular curve of $\textrm{PG}(m-2,\mathbb{K})$ with degree $(m-2)!$, genus $\mathfrak{g}= \frac{1}{4} ((m-2)(m-3)-4)(m-2)!+1$, and tame automorphism group $G$ isomorphic to $\textrm{Sym}_m$. We compute the genera of the quotient curves of $V$ with respect to the stabilizers of one or more coordinates under the action of $G$. In positive characteristic, the two extremal cases, $m=5$ and $m=p-1$ are investigated further. For $m=5$, we show that there exist infinitely many primes $p$ such that $V$ is $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$-maximal curve of genus $4$. The smallest such primes are $29,59,149,239,839$. For $m=p-1$ we prove that $V$ has as many as $(p-2)!$ points over $\mathbb{F}_p$ and has no further points over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$. We also point out a connection with previous work of Rédei about the famous Minkowski conjecture proven by Hajós (1941), as well as with a more recent result of Rodríguez Villegas, Voloch and Zagier (2001) on plane curves attaining the Stöhr-Voloch bound, and the regular sequence problem for systems of diagonal equations introduced by Conca, Krattenthaler and Watanabe (2009).

Abstract:The space $ \ft_n = \C^n/\C $ of $n$ points on the line modulo translation has a natural compactification $ \overline \ft_n $ as a matroid Schubert variety. In this space, pairwise distances between points can be infinite; it is natural to imagine points at infinite distance from each other as living on different projective lines. We call such a configuration of points a ``flower curve'', since we picture the projective lines joined into a flower. Within $ \ft_n $, we have the space $ F_n = \C^n \setminus \Delta / \C $ of $ n$ distinct points. We introduce a natural compatification $ \overline F_n $ along with a map $ \overline F_n \rightarrow \overline \ft_n $, whose fibres are products of genus 0 Deligne-Mumford spaces. We show that both $\overline \ft_n$ and $\overline F_n$, are special fibers of $1$-parameter families whose generic fibers are, respectively, Losev-Manin and Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces of stable genus $0$ curves with $n+2$ marked points.

Abstract:We explain how we computed equations for all genus 4 curves defined of the field with 2 elements, up-to-isomorphism, and some of the data we obtained. We give descriptions also of nice models for genus 4 curves over characteristic 2 fields, in both the hyperelliptic case and the trigonal case.

Abstract:In this paper, we study non-hyperelliptic curves of genus $3$ with cyclic automorphism group of order $6$. Over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3$, such curves are written as plane quartics $C_r: x^3 z + y^4 + r y^2 z^2 + z^4 = 0$ with one parameter $r$. As the first main theorem, we show that $r\neq 0,\pm 2$ and give a necessary and sufficient condition with respect to $r$ and $r'$ such that $C_r \cong C_{r'}$. By describing the Hasse-Witt matrix of $C_r$ in terms of a certain Gauss' hypergeometric series, we obtain the second main theorem, where we determine the possible $a$-number of $C_r$, and give the exact number of isomorphism classes over $K$ of such curves attaining the possible maximal $a$-number.

Abstract:In this paper we develop techniques for computing the relative Brauer group of curves, focusing particularly on the case where the genus is 1. We use these techniques to show that the relative Brauer group may be infinite (for certain ground fields) as well as to determine this group explicitly for certain curves defined over the rational numbers. To connect to previous descriptions of relative Brauer groups in the literature, we describe a family of genus 1 curves, which we call “cyclic type” for which the relative Brauer group can be shown to have a particularly nice description. In order to do this, we discuss a number of formulations of the pairing between the points on an elliptic curve and its Weil-Chatêlet group into the Brauer group of the ground field, and draw connections to the period-index problem for genus 1 curves.

Abstract:It is a classical fact going back to F. Klein that an elliptic curve $E$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial in $3$ variables with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$, where $j_{E}$ is the $j$-invariant of $E$, and $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$ is the field of moduli of $E$. The general definition of field of moduli goes back to T. Matsusaka and G. Shimura. With few exceptions, it coincides with the intersection of the fields where the curve is defined. We prove that every smooth plane curve of degree prime with $6$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial with coefficients in the field of moduli. Furthermore, we show that most plane curves in arbitrary degree, and more generally most algebraic cycles in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ with finite automorphism group, descend to a Brauer-Severi surface over the field of moduli.

Abstract:Suppose X is a smooth projective 3-fold of general type and |mK_X| is composed of a pencil of surfaces with m>1. This pencil naturally induces a fibration f:X->C onto a smooth curve C after the Stein-factorization, which is the main objects of this article. Based on Koll'ar's earlier works, we improve on it and try to understand the family in terms of discrete birational invariants of the total space as well as those of the general fiber and the base curve. The aim of this note is to build a little bit basic facts.

Abstract:Suppose $Y$ is a smooth variety equipped with a top form. We prove a simple theorem giving a sharp lower bound on the geometric genus of a family of subvarieties of $Y$, in terms of the dimension of this family. Two elementary applications are presented. On the one hand, we show that for a very general curve $C$ and a very general hypersurface $Y\subset \mathbb P^{n+1}$ of degree $\ge 2n+1$, any map $C \to Y$ is constant. On the other hand, we give a lower bound on the genus of a family of curves with an isotrivial factor in the associated family of Jacobians; we also characterize the families of curves attaining this bound as the families of degree $2$ branched covers of a fixed curve.

Abstract:We address the question of existence of absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension 2 with everywhere good reduction over quadratic fields. The emphasis will be given to the construction of pairs $(K,C)$, where $K$ is a quadratic number field and $C$ is a genus $2$ curve with everywhere good reduction over $K$. We provide the first infinite sequence of pairs $(K,C)$ where $K$ is a real (complex) quadratic field and $C$ has everywhere good reduction over $K$. Moreover, we show that the Jacobian of $C$ is an absolutely simple abelian variety.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p >0$. Suppose $g \geq 3$ and $0 \leq f \leq g$. We prove there is a smooth projective $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with no non-trivial automorphisms. In addition, we prove there is a smooth projective hyperelliptic $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ whose only non-trivial automorphism is the hyperelliptic involution. The proof involves computations about the dimension of the moduli space of (hyperelliptic) $k$-curves of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with extra automorphisms.

Abstract:Given a smooth, irreducible, projective surface $S$, let $g(S)$ be the minimum geometric genus of an irreducible curve that moves in a linear system of positive dimension on $S$. We determine the value of this birational invariant for a general surface of degree $d$ in $\mathbb P^3$ and give a bound for $g(S)$ if $S$ is a general polarised K3 or abelian surface. As soon as this note appeared on the math arxiv, David Stapleton kindly pointed out to the author a paper by Ein and Lazarsfeld, in which in turn a paper by Konno was cited. Unfortunately the author was not aware of these two papers which contain results that strictly include the ones of this note. The author is very grateful to David Stapleton.
