Abstract:The dichromatic number of a digraph is the minimum integer $k$ such that it admits a $k$-dicolouring, i.e. a partition of its vertices into $k$ acyclic subdigraphs. We say that a digraph $D$ is a super-orientation of an undirected graph $G$ if $G$ is the underlying graph of $D$. If $D$ does not contain any pair of symmetric arcs, we just say that $D$ is an orientation of $G$. In this work, we give both lower and upper bounds on the dichromatic number of super-orientations of chordal graphs. We also show a family of orientations of cographs for which the dichromatic number is equal to the clique number of the underlying graph.

Abstract:While the game chromatic number of a forest is known to be at most 4, no simple criteria are known for determining the game chromatic number of a forest. We first state necessary and sufficient conditions for forests with game chromatic number 2 and then investigate the differences between forests with game chromatic number 3 and 4. In doing so, we present a minimal example of a forest with game chromatic number 4, criteria for determining in polynomial time the game chromatic number of a forest without vertices of degree 3, and an example of a forest with maximum degree 3 and game chromatic number 4. This gives partial progress on the open question of the computational complexity of the game chromatic number of a forest.

Abstract:Given two graphs G and H , the Ramsey number R ( G , H ) is the minimum integer N such that any coloring of the edges of in red or blue yields a red G or a blue H . Let be the chromatic number of G , and s ( G ) denote the chromatic surplus of G , the cardinality of a minimum color class taken over all proper colorings of G with colors. A connected graph G is called H -good if . Chvátal (J. Graph Theory 1:93, 1977) showed that any tree is -good for , where denotes a complete graph with m vertices. Let tH denote the union of t disjoint copies of graph H . Sudarsana et al. (Comput. Sci. 6196, Springer, Berlin, 2010) proved that the n -vertex path is -good for and , and conjectured that any n -vertex tree is -good. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture and prove that is -good for and . We also prove a conclusion which yields that is -good, where is the disjoint union of and , . Furthermore, we extend the Ramsey goodness of connected graphs to disconnected graphs and study the relation between the Ramsey number of the components of a disconnected graph versus a graph H . We show that if each component of a graph F is H -good, then F is H -good. Our result implies the exact value of , where F is a forest and .

Chordal graphs with bounded tree-width

Abstract:Given $t\geq 2$ and $0\leq k\leq t$, we prove that the number of labelled $k$-connected chordal graphs with $n$ vertices and tree-width at most $t$ is asymptotically $c n^{-5/2} \gamma^n n!$, as $n\to\infty$, for some constants $c,\gamma >0$ depending on $t$ and $k$. Additionally, we show that the number of $i$-cliques ($2\leq i\leq t$) in a uniform random $k$-connected chordal graph with tree-width at most $t$ is normally distributed as $n\to\infty$. The asymptotic enumeration of graphs of tree-width at most $t$ is wide open for $t\geq 3$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial class of graphs with bounded tree-width where the asymptotic counting problem is solved. Our starting point is the work of Wormald [Counting Labelled Chordal Graphs, Graphs and Combinatorics (1985)], were an algorithm is developed to obtain the exact number of labelled chordal graphs on $n$ vertices.

Chordal graphs, even-hole-free graphs and sparse obstructions to bounded treewidth

Abstract:We present and study the following conjecture: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and a graph $H$, every even-hole-free graph of large enough treewidth has an induced subgraph isomorphic to either $K_t$ or $H$, if (and only if) $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. The ``only if'' part follows from the properties of the so-called layered wheels due to Sintiari and Trotignon. Alecu, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and the author recently proved the conjecture in two special cases: (a) when $t=4$; and (b) when $H=cone (F)$ for some forest $F$; that is, $H$ is obtained from $F$ by adding a universal vertex. Our first result is a common strengthening: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and graphs $F$ and $H$, (even-hole, $cone(cone (F))$, $H$, $K_t$)-free graphs have bounded treewidth if and only if $F$ is a forest and $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. Also, for general $t\geq 4$, we push the current state of the art further than (b) by settling the conjecture for the smallest choices of $H$ that are not coned forests. This follows from our second result: we prove the conjecture when $H$ is a crystal; that is, a graph obtained from several coned double stars by gluing them together along the middle edges of the double stars. In the first version of this paper, we suggested a strengthening of our main conjecture, that for every $t\geq 1$, every graph of sufficiently large treewidth has an induced subgraph of treewidth $t$ which is either complete, complete bipartite, or $2$-degenerate. This strengthening has now been refuted by Chudnovsky and Trotignon [On treewidth and maximum cliques, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.07471" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.07471">arXiv:2405.07471</a>, 2024].

Abstract:Chord diagrams are used by guitar players to show where and how to play a chord on the fretboard. They are useful to beginners learning chords or for sharing the hand positions required to play a song.However, the diagrams presented on guitar learning toolsare usually selected from an existing databaseand rarely represent the actual positions used by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://performers.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this paper, we propose a tool which suggests a chord diagram for achord label,taking into account the diagram of the previous chord.Based on statistical analysis of the DadaGP and mySongBook datasets, we show that some chord diagrams are over-represented in western popular musicand that some chords can be played in more than 20 different ways.We argue that taking context into account can improve the variety and the quality of chord diagram suggestion, and compare this approach with a model taking only the current chord label into account.We show that adding previous context improves the F1-score on this task by up to 27% and reduces the propensity of the model to suggest standard open chords.We also define the notion of texture in the context of chord diagrams andshow through a variety of metrics that our model improves textureconsistencywith the previous diagram.

The uncountable Hadwiger conjecture and characterizations of trees using graphs

Abstract:We prove that the existence of a non-special tree of size is equivalent to the existence of an uncountably chromatic graph with no minor of size , establishing a connection between the special tree number and the uncountable Hadwiger conjecture. Also characterizations of Aronszajn, Kurepa and Suslin trees using graphs are deduced. A new generalized notion of connectedness for graphs is introduced using which we are able to characterize weakly compact cardinals.

Abstract:We consider the \emph{connected game coloring number} of a graph, introduced by Charpentier et al. as a game theoretic graph parameter that measures the degeneracy of a graph with respect to a certain two-player game played with an uncooperative adversary. We consider the connected game coloring number of graphs of bounded treedepth and of $k$-trees. In particular, we show that there exists an outerplanar $2$-tree with connected game coloring number of $5$, which answers a question from [C. Charpentier, H. Hocquard, E. Sopena, and X. Zhu. A connected version of the graph coloring game. \textit{Discrete Appl. Math.}, 2020].

Abstract:Given graphs $ F_1, F_2$ and $G$, we say that $G$ is Ramsey for $(F_1,F_2)$ and we write $G\rightarrow(F_1, F_2)$, if for every edge coloring of $G$ by red and blue, there is either a red copy of $F_1$ or a blue copy of $F_2$ in $G$. The size Ramsey number $\hat{r}(F_1, F_2)$ is defined as the minimum number of edges of a graph $G$ such that $G\rightarrow(F_1, F_2)$. This paper provides the exact value of $\hat{r}(F_1, F_2)$ for many pairs $(F_1, F_2)$ of star forests, giving a partial solution to a conjecture of Burr et al. (Ramsey-minimal graphs for multiple copies, Indagationes Mathematicae, 81(2) (1978), 187-195).

Abstract:It is known that every graph of sufficiently large <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/mathematics/chromatic-number">chromatic number</a> and bounded clique number contains, as an <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/mathematics/induced-subgraph">induced subgraph</a>, a subdivision of any fixed forest, and a subdivision of any fixed cycle. Equivalently, every forest is pervasive, and <math>K3</math> is pervasive, in the class of all graphs, where we say a graph H is "pervasive" (in some class of graphs) if for all <math>ℓ≥1</math>, every graph in the class of bounded clique number and sufficiently large chromatic number has an induced subgraph that is a subdivision of H, in which every edge of H is replaced by a path of at least ℓ edges.Which other graphs are pervasive? It was proved by Chalopin, Esperet, Li and Ossona de Mendez that every such graph is a "forest of lanterns": roughly, every block is a "lantern", a graph obtained from a tree by adding one extra vertex, and there are rules about how the blocks fit together. It is not known whether every forest of lanterns is pervasive in the class of all graphs; but in another paper two of us prove that all "banana trees" are pervasive, that is, <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/mathematics/multigraph">multigraphs</a> obtained from a forest by adding parallel edges, thus generalizing the two results above. This paper contains the first half of the proof, which works for any forest of lanterns, not just for banana trees.Say a class of graphs is "ρ-controlled" if for every graph in the class, its chromatic number is at most some function (determined by the class) of the largest chromatic number of a ρ-ball in the graph. In this paper we prove that for every <math>ρ≥2</math>, and for every ρ-controlled class, every forest of lanterns is pervasive in this class.These results turn out particularly nicely when applied to string graphs. A "chandelier" is a special lantern, a graph obtained from a tree by adding a vertex adjacent to precisely the leaves of the tree. A "string graph" is the <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/mathematics/intersection-graph">intersection graph</a> of a set of curves in the plane. There are string graphs with clique number two and chromatic number arbitrarily large. We prove that the class of string graphs is 2-controlled, and consequently every forest of lanterns is pervasive in this class; but in fact something stronger is true, that every string graph of sufficiently large chromatic number and bounded clique number contains each fixed chandelier as an induced subgraph (not just as a subdivision); and the same for most forests of chandeliers (there is an extra condition on how the blocks are attached together).

Abstract:For a graph $G$, let $\sigma_{2}(G)$ be the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices in $G$. A chord of a cycle in a graph $G$ is an edge of $G$ joining two non-consecutive vertices of the cycle. In this paper, we prove the following result, which is an extension of a result of Brandt et al. (J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173) for large graphs: For positive integers $k$ and $c$, there exists an integer $f(k,c)$ such that, if $G$ is a graph of order $n \ge f(k, c)$ and $\sigma_{2}(G) \ge n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, each of which has at least $c$ chords.

Abstract:The Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any graph on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a subgraph. A linear (star) forest is a forest consisting of paths (stars). A path-star forest $F$ is a forest consisting of paths and stars. In this paper, we determine $ex(n,F)$ for sufficiently large $n$ and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs, and our result generalizes previous known results on the Turán numbers of linear forests and star forests.

Abstract:Trees or rooted trees have been generously studied in the literature. A forest is a set of trees or rooted trees. Here we give recurrence relations between the number of some kind of rooted forest with $k$ roots and that with $k+1$ roots on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Classical formulas for counting various trees such as rooted trees, bipartite trees, tripartite trees, plane trees, $k$-ary plane trees, $k$-edge colored trees follow immediately from our recursive relations.

Kruskal--Katona type theorems for forests, quasi-forests, pure forests and pure quasi-forests will be presented. In addition, it will be shown that a quasi-forest is shellable if and only if its $h$-vector $(h_0, h_1, h_2, ...)$ satisfies $h_i = 0$ for $i > 1$.

Abstract:The chordal ring (CR) graphs are a well-known family of graphs used to model some interconnection networks for computer systems in which all nodes are in a cycle. Generalizing the CR graphs, in this paper, we introduce the families of chordal multi-ring (CMR), chordal ring mixed (CRM), and chordal multi-ring mixed (CMRM) graphs. In the case of mixed graphs, we can have edges (without direction) and arcs (with direction). The chordal ring and chordal ring mixed graphs are bipartite and 3-regular. They consist of a number $r$ (for $r\geq 1$) of (undirected or directed) cycles with some edges (the chords) joining them. In particular, for CMR, when $r=1$, that is, with only one undirected cycle, we obtain the known families of chordal ring graphs. Here, we use plane tessellations to represent our chordal multi-ring graphs. This allows us to obtain their maximum number of vertices for every given diameter. Besides, we computationally obtain their minimum diameter for any value of the number of vertices. Moreover, when seen as a lift graph (also called voltage graph) of a base graph on Abelian groups, we obtain closed formulas for the spectrum, that is, the eigenvalue multi-set of its adjacency matrix.

Abstract:Thomassen in 1994 published a famous proof of the fact that the choosability of a planar graph is at most 5. Zhu in 2019 generalized this result by showing that the same bound holds for Alon-Tarsi numbers of planar graphs. We present an alternative proof of that fact, derived from the results on decompositions of planar graphs into trees known as Schnyder woods. It turns out that Thomassen’s technique and our proof based on Schnyder woods have a lot in common. We discuss and explain the prominent role that counterclockwise 3-orientations play in proofs based on both these approaches.
