Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:High repetition rate fiber lasers have attracted great attention in recent years due to their potential applications including spectroscopy and laser processing. In this manuscript, we have demon-strated sub-30 fs pulses directly from a compact Er-doped fiber laser amplifier system with a high repetition rate of ∼203 MHz. The design of the laser comprises of a home-built oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking mechanism, an all-fiber amplifier, and a fiber type compressor. By optimizing the length of single mode fiber compressor, the shortest pulse duration of 26 fs is achieved, which is ∼4.9 optical cycle at 1570 nm. The average output power of the de-chirped pulse is 267 mW with corresponding pulse energy of 1.3 nJ. Such a high repetition rate fiber laser with few-cycle pulse holds tremendous potential for numerous applications that require high temporal resolution, and high photon flux.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-repetition-rate soliton fiber laser that is based on highly doped anomalously dispersive erbium-doped fiber. By splicing an 11 mm single-mode fiber to the erbium-doped fiber, the thermal damage of the butt-coupled saturable Bragg reflector (SBR) is overcome. The laser generates 187 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 967 MHz with a measured long-term stability of more than 60 h.

Abstract:We demonstrated a compact broad spectrum ultrashort fiber laser system that employed a similariton laser as a seed and fiber-optic nonlinearities in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier to broaden the optical spectrum. The system generated a stable 59 fs ultrashort pulse with a spectral bandwidth beyond 550 nm (i.e. 1490-2030 nm). The mode-locked oscillator produced an 85.9 fs similariton pulse at the wavelength of 1553 nm. The maximum average output power of the laser system was 251 mW. This new type of standard single-mode fiber-format energetic ultrashort system was suitable as a source for biological tissue imaging, broad-band spectroscopy, and optical frequency combs.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new approach to implement a wavelength-tunable ultrafast fiber laser source suitable for multiphoton microscopy. We employ fiber-optic nonlinearities to broaden a narrowband optical spectrum generated by an Yb-fiber laser system and then use optical bandpass filters to select the leftmost or rightmost spectral lobes from the broadened spectrum. Detailed numerical modeling shows that self-phase modulation dominates the spectral broadening, self-steepening tends to blue shift the broadened spectrum, and stimulated Raman scattering is minimal. We also find that optical wave breaking caused by fiber dispersion slows down the shift of the leftmost/rightmost spectral lobes and therefore limits the wavelength tuning range of the filtered spectra. We show both numerically and experimentally that shortening the fiber used for spectral broadening while increasing the input pulse energy can overcome this dispersion-induced limitation; as a result, the filtered spectral lobes have higher power, constituting a powerful and practical approach for energy scaling the resulting femtosecond sources. We use two commercially available photonic crystal fibers to verify the simulation results. More specific, use of 20-mm fiber NL-1050-ZERO-2 enables us to implement an Yb-fiber laser based ultrafast source, delivering femtosecond (70-120 fs) pulses tunable from 825 nm to 1210 nm with > 1 nJ pulse energy. Abstract:We report on a wavelength-tunable large-normal-dispersion erbium-doped mode-locking fiber oscillator. By using a grating as spectral filter, the intra-cavity mode-locking spectrum can be tuned continuously. The laser produces 250 fs pulses with average power of 130 mW and a tunable center wavelength range from 1528 nm to 1570 nm.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting erbium fiber oscillator-amplifier system based on the nonlinear polarization rotation mode-locked mechanism. The direct output pulse from the amplifier is 47 fs with an average power of 1.22 W and a repetition rate of 50 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of 24 nJ. The full width at half-maximum of the spectrum of the output pulses is approximately 93nm at a central wavelength of 1572nm so that the transform-limited pulse duration is as short as 39 fs. Due to the imperfect dispersion compensation, we compress the pulses to 47 fs in this experiment.

Abstract:By optimizing the cavity dispersion map, 1.5-nJ pulses as short as 36 fs are obtained from a Yb-doped fiber laser. Residual higher-order dispersion currently limits the pulse duration, and it should be possible to generate pulses as short as 25-30 fs with Yb-doped fiber.

Abstract:We report on high-energy ultrashort pulse generation from a passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber oscillator operating in the anomalous dispersion regime. In the single-pulse regime, the laser directly generates 880 mW of average power of sub-500 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 53.33 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of 16.5 nJ. Stable and self-starting operation is obtained by adapting the spot size at the saturable absorber mirror to the pulse evolution in the low-nonlinearity fiber. The approach presented demonstrates the scaling potential of fiber based short pulse oscillators towards the microJ-level.

Abstract:We report on the development of a chirped pulse amplification (CPA) designed erbium fiber source with a hybrid high-power amplifier, which is composed of erbium-doped and erbium/ytterbium-co-doped double-clad large-mode-area fibers. Stretched pulses from the high-power amplifier with up to 21.9 µJ energy and 198.5 kHz repetition rate are dechirped in the transmission grating pair-based compressor with 73% efficiency, yielding as short as 742 fs duration with 15.8 µJ energy and ≈13M W peak power (maximum average power up to 3.14 W) at the central wavelength of 1.56 µm. Compressed pulses are coupled into microstructured negative-curvature hollow-core fibers with a single row capillary cladding and different core sizes of 34 µm and 75 µm in order to realize femtosecond pulse delivery with a diffraction-limited output beam (M 2≤1.09) and demonstrate ∼200n J Stokes pulse generation at 1712 nm via rotational SRS in pressurized hydrogen (H 2). We believe that the developed system may be a prospect for high-precision material processing and other high-energy and high-peak-power laser applications.

Abstract:Compact and broadband mid-infrared (MIR) sources are in high demand because of a wide range of potential applications such as molecular sensing in the fingerprint region. The generation of coherent MIR radiation at arbitrary frequencies typically requires nonlinear mixing between at least two input waves, which is often cumbersome to implement. We present an integrated and, therefore, adjustment-free solution combining few-femtosecond pulse compression in a germanosilicate optical fiber and optical rectification. To this end, a 16-μm-thin GaSe crystal is directly mounted on the end facet of a highly nonlinear fiber assembly exploiting a focused ion beam. With input pulses of a minute energy of 5 nJ and a duration of 120 fs at the telecom wavelength of 1.55 μm, we directly obtain ultrabroadband and phase-stable output transients. Electro-optic sampling in free space reveals single-cycle pulses with spectral components covering the entire MIR from 10 to 120 THz.

Abstract:A source of ultrashort pulses of light in the 2 μm region was constructed using supercontinuum broadening from an erbium mode-locked laser. The output spectrum spanned 1000 nm to 2200 nm with an average power of 250 mW. A pulse width of 39 fs for part of the spectrum in the 2000 nm region, corresponding to less than six optical cycles, was achieved. A heterodyne measurement of the free-running mode-locked laser with a narrow-linewidth continuous wave laser resulted in a near shot noise-limited beat note with a signal-to-noise ratio of 45 dB in a 10 kHz resolution bandwidth. The relative intensity noise of the broadband system was investigated over the entire supercontinuum, and the integrated relative intensity noise of the 2000 nm portion of the spectrum was 1.7 × 10(-3). The long-term stability of the system was characterized, and intensity fluctuations in the spectrum were found to be highly correlated throughout the supercontinuum. Spectroscopic limitations due to the laser noise characteristics are discussed.

Abstract:We present an ultrashort-pulsed laser source with time-widths as short as 20 fs at around 1.5 μm. For this purpose, the pulses have been spectrally broadened and temporarily compressed by means of supercontinuum generation in a highly nonlinear optical fiber. Inspired by numerical simulations, we have experimentally confirmed that the emission of a resonant dispersive wave is a key indicator for the optimum configuration to achieve maximum temporal compression. No dispersion control stage is needed, which results in the simplicity of the system. An extensive analysis has been made concerning the quality of the pulses obtained, particularly in terms of time-width (at half height and at 1/e height of the maximum) as well as their time-bandwidth product. The complex retrieval of the pulses shows that the smallest temporal width obtained experimentally is 17 fs. A comparison with values found in the literature also shows that our pulses are among the best that can be found with this technology.

Abstract:The possibility of performing time-resolved spectroscopic studies in the molecular fingerprinting region or extending the cut-off wavelength of high-harmonic generation has recently boosted the development of efficient mid-infrared ultrafast lasers. In particular, fibre lasers based on active media such as thulium or holmium are a very active area of research since they are robust, compact and can operate at high repetition rates. These systems, however, are still complex, are unable to deliver pulses shorter than 100 fs and are not yet as mature as their near-infrared counterparts. Here we report generation of sub-40 fs pulses at 1.8 microns, with quantum efficiencies of 50% and without need for post-compression, in hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibre pumped by a commercial 300-fs fibre laser at 1030 nm. This is achieved by pressure-tuning the dispersion and avoiding Raman gain suppression by adjusting the chirp of the pump pulses and the proportion of higher order modes launched into the fibre. The system is optimized using a physical model that incorporates the main linear and nonlinear contributions to the optical response. The approach is average power-scalable, permits adjustment of the pulse shape and can potentially allow access to much longer wavelengths.

Abstract:An all-fiber low-repetition-rate SESAM mode-locked fiber oscillator combined with a dispersion-managed active fiber loop produces a flexible GHz burst-mode laser source. The high-power output is then produced by amplifying the GHz burst-mode laser source using an all-fiber chirped-pulse amplification system. Then, the laser is compressed using a grating pair compressor; a maximum amplified power of 97 W is obtained. This results in a compressed high power of 82.07 W with a power stability RMS of 0.09% and beam quality better than 1.2. Accurate dispersion control allows for the production of a high-quality pulse duration of 265 fs.

Abstract:A new architecture which is based on the chirped pulse amplification scheme is proposed to increase the pulse energy of the mode-locked fiber laser. The idea was applied to a passively mode-locked laser using an ytterbium (Yb/sup 3+/)-doped double-clad silica fiber. Mode-locking was achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution associated to frequency-shifted feedback technique for self-starting. A compressor and a stretcher, based on diffraction gratings, permitted us to manage the dispersion and to reduce the pulse power in the fiber. The laser delivered chirped pulses at 1050 nm with 11.8-nJ energy at a 9.3-MHz repetition rate (110-mW average power) which were subsequently compressed to 196-fs duration.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple and compact Holmium-doped fiber femtosecond oscillator, in-band pumped by a commercial Tm-doped fiber laser. The oscillator operates in the dispersion managed soliton regime at net zero intracavity dispersion and delivers >1 nJ pulse energy at 35 MHz repetition rate. The pulse duration directly at the oscillator output is 160 fs FWHM, close to the Fourier-limit of 145 fs FWHM. Using an additional nonlinear compressor stage, sub-100 fs FWHM pulse durations could be achieved. The nonlinear fiber compressor is implemented by a solid core highly nonlinear fiber for spectral broadening and a single mode fiber for pulse compression.
