Abstract:With the advent of digital industry, intelligent manufacturing is becoming a pillar industry guiding the rapid development of modern industry and daily life of human kind. Nevertheless, the lack of advanced functional materials severely restricts the technological updates and product upgrades. Herein, we developed a facile method to fabricate polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/barium titanate (BaTiO3) spherical piezoelectric powder for SLS processing by combining solid state shear milling (S3M) and plasma technology. With assistance of simulation of heat transfers and molecular dynamics, the transformation of irregular powder to spherical one was successfully clarified by melt surface tension. As a proof-of-concept, the as-prepared spherical powder endowed SLS parts with advanced mechanical properties and piezoelectric properties derived from the excellent accumulation characteristics. The improved piezoelectric properties could reach an open-circuit voltage of 4.7 V and a short-circuit current of 106.5 nA, which exhibited better output performance than those of most reported piezoelectric 3D parts. This work not only contributed a high quality piezoelectric material for SLS processing, but also provided a new route for efficient and clean preparation of polymer-based spherical powder for all chemical engineering fields.

Abstract:Piezoelectric composites are considered excellent core materials for fabricating various ultrasonic devices. For the traditional fabrication process, piezoelectric composite structures are mainly prepared by mold forming, mixing, and dicing-filing techniques. However, these techniques are limited on fabricating shapes with complex structures. With the rapid development of additive manufacturing (AM), many research fields have applied AM technology to produce functional materials with various geometric shapes. In this study, the Mask-Image-Projection-based Stereolithography (MIP-SL) process, one of the AM (3D-printing) methods, was used to build BaTiO3-based piezoelectric composite ceramics with honeycomb structure design. A sintered sample with denser body and higher density was achieved (i.e., density obtained 5.96 g/cm3), and the 3D-printed ceramic displayed the expected piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties using the complex structure (i.e., piezoelectric constant achieved 60 pC/N). After being integrated into an ultrasonic device, the 3D-printed component also presents promising material performance and output power properties for ultrasound sensing (i.e., output voltage reached 180 mVpp). Our study demonstrated the effectiveness of AM technology in fabricating piezoelectric composites with complex structures that cannot be fabricated by dicing-filling. The approach may bring more possibilities to the fabrication of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS)-based ultrasonic devices via 3D-printing methods in the future.

Abstract:Flexible piezoelectric functional composite materials have the advantages of strong plasticity and good surface adhesion, and show great potential in smart wearable devices, electronic skin and other applications. However, due to the complexity of traditional preparation process, high molding cost and poor air permeability, its further development is limited. Direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing technology is a rapid prototyping technology, with higher flexibility, faster manufacturing speed and lower manufacturing costs, is widely used in metal, ceramic and composite material molding. In this work, a ink system with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as binder and barium titanate (BTO) ceramic powder as piezoelectric filler was developed, the printing work of flexible porous BTO/PDMS composite material was completed. DIW dual-nozzle printing technology was applied to realise "electrode-piezoelectric-electrode" integrated flexible porous functional gradient structure composites in this study. The results show that the BTO/PDMS ink has the characteristics of shear thinning. When the nozzle diameter is 0.5 mm, the printing speed is 650 mm/min, and the BTO mass fraction is 80%, the flexible porous piezoelectric composite with high precision and complex structure is printed. By phase analysis of BTO/PDMS, it is found that the sample has the characteristic peak of BTO. The microstructure analysis shows that the surface of the sample has good structural fidelity and there are a few island-like pores in the interior. The mechanical test shows that the maximum tensile strength of the sample is 1.33 MPa, the elastic modulus is 1.72 MPa, the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d 33 is 4.37 Pc/N, and the open circuit voltage VOC is 3.17 V. This work demonstrates an attractive method of moulding flexible piezoelectric materials with an "electrode-piezoelectric-electrode" structure, which provides a reference to current 3D printing flexible material fabrication techniques due to its simplicity of operation, time and manufacturing cost savings.

3D printed 0–3 type piezoelectric composites with high voltage sensitivity

Abstract:Piezoelectric composites made of piezoelectric ceramic particles and polymer composites combine the performance advantages of both components and have broad application prospects. However, the preparation of complex structures is still a challenge, for which 3D printing technology provides a perfect solution. The aim of the present study is to investigate the principle and process optimization of the stereolithography of 0–3 type piezoelectric composites through simulation and experiments. In particular, a modified three-phase model of a spherical shell is applied to elucidate the influence of the elastic modulus between the ceramic particles and the matrix on the piezoelectric properties of the composites at the macroscopic level. This enables the piezoelectric properties of the composites to be predicted more accurately, and guides the surface grafting modification of piezoelectric ceramic powders. Furthermore, the problem of weak interface bonding in piezoelectric composites caused by poor compatibility between hydrophilic particles and the hydrophobic matrix is successfully solved by preprocessing the PZT ceramic powder via activating the particle surface hydroxyl groups and grafting a silane coupling agent onto the piezoelectric ceramic powder. As a result, the particles are bonded to the matrix by covalent bonds, which increases the elastic modulus of the interface transition layer and modifies the stress transfer efficiency. For instance, the piezoelectric strain constant ( d 33 ) of piezoelectric composite containing 60 wt% functionalized PZT particles is increased from 20 to 37 pC/N. The printing accuracy, piezoelectric properties, and mechanical characteristics of the piezoelectric composites are thoroughly investigated, and the reliability of the proposed theoretical model and simulation results is verified. The piezoelectric composites are uniformly compact and have a low residual pore rate. The piezoelectric composite with a solid content of 60 wt% has a volume density of 2.27 g/cm3 and a Young's modulus of 535.44 MPa. Most importantly, its piezoelectric voltage constant ( g 33 ) is 167.2 × 10−3 Vm/N, which is more than seven times higher than that of homogeneous PZT and results in high voltage sensitivity.

Abstract:A digital light processing (DLP) technology has been developed for 3D printing lead-free barium titanate (BTO) piezoelectric ceramics. By comparing the curing and rheological properties of slurries with different photosensitive monomer, a high refractive index monomer acryloyl morpholine (ACMO) was chosen, and a design and preparation method of BTO slurry with high solid content, low viscosity and high curing ability was proposed. By further selecting the printing parameters, the single-layer exposure time was reduced and the forming efficiency has been greatly improved. Sintered specimens were obtained after a nitrogen-air double-step debinding and furnace sintering process, and the BTO ceramics fabricated with 80 wt% slurry shows the highest relative density (95.32 %) and piezoelectric constant (168.1 pC/N). Furthermore, complex-structured BTO ceramics were prepared, impregnated by epoxy resin and finally assembly made into hydrophones, which has significance for the future design and manufacture of piezoelectric ceramic-based composites that used in functional devices.

Abstract:Digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology is widely applied in the fabrication of ceramics owing to the good printing precision and printing speed. Barium titanate (BaTiO3, BT) has attracted extensive attention of researchers due to the good piezoelectric constant, strong dielectric constant, and ease of integration. Therefore, DLP 3D printing technology is combined with the production of BaTiO3/1,6-ethylene glycol diacrylate/Polyethylene glycol (400) diacrylate (BT/HDDA/PEG(400)DA) nanocomposites to improve the electrical properties. A preparation method for composite slurry with high fluidity, high solid content, and low viscosity is proposed by comparing the electrical properties of BT/HDDA/PEG(400)DA nanocomposite fabrication with different solid content. The work demonstrates that 67 wt% BT/HDDA/PEG(400)DA nanocomposites are better solid content to DLP 3D printing technology and the printed nanocomposite has the excellent electric properties. After a post-processing, the 67 wt% nanocomposite slurry shows the higher relative density (91.69%) and exhibits piezoelectric constant, remnant polarization, and dielectric constant of 151 pC/N, 17.4 μC/cm2, and 7712, respectively. The results suggest that the DLP 3D printing technology provides an alternative method for the fabrication of complex functionality nanocomposite piezoelectric elements.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In this paper, two methods (magnetic stirring and mechanical ball milling) were used to modify the surface of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) particles. Then, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/PZT piezoelectric films were prepared by extrusion casting and solvent casting. We investigated the mechanical, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties, as well as the breakdown strength of the PVDF/PZT films. We found that adding PZT particles improved the mechanical stability of the films under variable temperature conditions. Modification by the UP-105 titanate coupling reagent further improved the combination and dispersion of PZT@105 particles in PVDF. The films prepared by extrusion casting showed improved properties in terms of density, dielectric constant, breakdown strength, and piezoelectric coefficient. The piezoelectric coefficient (d33) of the PVDF/PZT@105 composite film (with 25 wt.% PZT@105) prepared by extrusion casting reached 35 pC/N, and the electromechanical strain ratio was almost 1.6%, which is higher than that of piezoelectric ceramics.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) and its copolymers have attracted great attention in the development of energy-harvesting devices because of their unique properties such as good flexibility, environmental friendliness, high halogen and acid resistance, lightweight and good biocompatibility. Compared to the most commonly used PZT (lead zirconate titanate), the piezoelectricity of PVDF and its copolymer-based materials is relatively low. To further expand the applications of PVDF, there is an urgent need for efficient methods to prepare high piezoelectric polymers or composites. In this work, the crystal phases are introduced first. Then, the preparation methods of PVDF and its copolymer-based materials are summarized, which are mainly focused on four determining factors of piezoelectricity. The mechanisms of piezoelectric β-phase formation and α- to β-phase transformation are introduced. The influence parameters of each process and their interactions are discussed in detail. In the last section, the progress of the preparation methods is summarized. This work will provide useful information to researchers working on piezoelectric composites.

Abstract:Piezoelectric composite ceramics, as the key components of ultrasonic transducers, have their vibration modes, electromechanical coupling performance, and acoustic impedance closely related to the volume fraction of ceramics. This study employed a novel digital light processing 3D printing technique (DLP) to fabricate 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BCZT)-based 1-3 piezoelectric composite ceramics with different ceramic volume fractions (15.6 %, 23.5 %, 36.2 %, 48.4 %, 59.5 %). It demonstrates the suitability of the DLP process for the fabrication of 1-3 piezoelectric composite ceramics and investigates the influence of ceramic volume fraction on the performance of these ceramics. When the piezoelectric ceramic volume fraction was 59.5 %, the piezoelectric coefficient effective d33 of the 1-3 piezoelectric composite device reached 315 pC/N, demonstrating excellent piezoelectric performance. The acoustic impedance Z was 16.3 MRayl, and the thickness electromechanical coupling coefficient kt was 0.55, indicating high energy conversion efficiency. The air-coupled ultrasonic transducer prepared from the 1-3 piezoelectric composite ceramics with a ceramic volume fraction of 59.5 % exhibited a round-trip insertion loss (IL) of -70.32 dB and a -6 dB bandwidth (BW-6dB) of 7.42 %. This work provides a more convenient and new method for the preparation of lead-free piezoelectric ceramic ultrasonic transducers.

Abstract:Piezoelectric ceramics are vital components in electronic devices. These components with designed complicated structures are difficult to be fabricated using traditional methods due to their high brittleness and hardness. Additive manufacturing technologies offer new opportunities for the preparation of piezoelectric ceramics. Herein, we prepared high-performance BaTiO3 ceramics by digital light processing. The slurry with 1.5 wt % dispersant content showed favourable dispersion effect and stability. The optimum photoinitiator of 3 wt % and applied energy dose of 160 mJ/cm2 could provide a sufficient interlayer combination. After a sintering process, sintered BaTiO3 ceramics kept a single perovskite tetragonal structure and the relative density reached 95.4%, which could be comparable to that of BaTiO3 ceramics prepared by dry pressing. The printed BaTiO3 ceramics exhibited favorable dielectric and piezoelectric properties (ɛr = 1543, tan δ = 0.0185, d33 = 180 pC/N, g33 = 1.32 × 10−2 Vm/N and FOMoff = 1.28 × 10−10 m2/N). Furthermore, some samples with designed complicated structures were fabricated to evaluate the performance of piezoelectric energy harvesting, and an open circuit voltage and short circuit current of ∼5.5 mV and ∼5.2 pA were obtained. These results indicate that digital light processing is a promising approach to fabricate piezoelectric energy-harvesting ceramics with high geometrical flexibility.

Novel Sandwich-Structured Flexible Composite Films with Enhanced Piezoelectric Performance.

Abstract:Piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers have been widely investigated for applications in wearable electric devices and sensing systems, owing to their intrinsic piezoelectricity and superior flexibility. However, their weak piezoelectricity poses major challenges for practical applications. To overcome these challenges, we propose a two-step synthesis approach to fabricate sandwich-structured piezoelectric films (BaTiO3@PDA/PVDF/BaTiO3@PDA) with significantly enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. As compared to pristine PVDF films or conventional 0-3 composite films, a maximum polarization (P-max) of 11.24 mu C/cm(2), a remanent polarization (P-r) of 5.83 mu C/cm(2), and an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient (d(33) similar to 14.6 pC/N) were achieved. Simulation and experimental results have demonstrated that the sandwich structure enhances the ability of composite films to withstand higher poling electric fields in comparison with 0-3 composites. The sandwich-structured piezoelectric films are further integrated into a wireless sensor system with a high force sensitivity of 288 mV/N, demonstrating great potential for movement monitoring applications. This facile approach shows great promise for the large-scale production of composite films with remarkable flexibility, ferroelectricity, and piezoelectricity for wearable sensing devices.
Synergistic improvement of mechanical and piezoelectric properties of the flexible piezoelectric ceramic composite and its high-precision preparation

Abstract:Flexible piezoelectric ceramic composites (FPCCs) hold promising applications in fields such as flexible sensing and energy harvesting. However, the previous methods are difficult to achieve high-precision preparation of the FPCCs with complex structures, as well as the synergistic enhancement of piezoelectric performance and flexibility. In this study, by configuring a flexible resin matrix and employing a surface functionalization treatment on the piezoelectric ceramic particles, the flexibility and piezoelectric performance of the FPCCs are synergistically improved. Moreover, the addition of a light absorber, TiO2, significantly improves the 3D printing precision. The mechanical properties, piezoelectric performance, and printing precision of the FPCCs are analyzed. It is found that the printing error is less than 2 μm, the tensile fracture strength is 4.07 MPa, the elongation at break is 350 %, and the piezoelectric constant d33 can reach 7.7 pC/N. In addition, the cyclic loading tests show that FPCCs with high-precision 3D complex microstructure have good recovery performance. This study not only enriches the formulation of FPCCs slurry for 3D printing, but also provides a research foundation for the multifunctional applications.

Abstract:High-performance flexible barium titanate (BaTiO3)-based piezoelectric devices have gained much attention. However, it is still a challenge to prepare flexible polymer/BaTiO3-based composite materials with uniform distribution and high performance due to the high viscosity of polymers. In this study, novel hybrid BaTiO3 particles were synthesized with assistance of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) via a low-temperature hydrothermal method and explored for their application in piezoelectric composites. Specifically, Ba2+ was adsorbed on uniformly dispersed CNFs with a large amount of negative charge on their surface, which nucleated, resulting in the synthesis of evenly dispersed CNF-BaTiO3. The obtained CNF-BaTiO3 possessed a uniform particle size, few impurities, high crystallinity and dispersity, high compatibility with the polymer substrate and surface activity due to the existence of CNFs. Subsequently, both polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and TEMPO-oxidized CNFs were employed as piezoelectric substrates for the fabrication of a CNF/PVDF/CNF-BaTiO3 composite membrane with a compact structure, displaying the tensile strength of 18.61 ± 3.75 MPa and elongation at break of 3.06 ± 1.33%. Finally, a thin piezoelectric generator (PEG) was assembled, which output a considerable open-circuit voltage (4.4 V) and short-circuit current (200 nA), and could also power a light-emitting diode and charge a 1 μF capacitor to 3.66 V in 500 s. Its longitudinal piezoelectric constant (d 33) was 5.25 ± 1.04 pC N-1 even with a small thickness. It also exhibited high sensitivity to human movement, outputting a voltage of about 9 V and current of 739 nA for only a footstep. Thus, it exhibited good sensing property and energy harvesting property, presenting practical application prospects. This work provides a new idea for the preparation of hybrid BaTiO3 and cellulose-based piezoelectric composite materials.
Rapid Prototyping of Piezoelectric Ceramics Via Selective Laser Sintering and Gelcasting

Abstract:This article presents a new lost mold rapid prototyping method which combines selective laser sintering (SLS) and gelcasting techniques for fabricating piezoelectric ceramics. SLS was used to fabricate sacrificial molds of the desired structure of the ceramic part. Then aqueous PZT (lead zirconate titanate) suspension was cast in the mold and solidified in situ through formation of a three‐dimensional network gel. Because the polymer mold can be easily removed at the initial stage of sintering and the gelcast PZT body has a high green strength, the desired geometry of the PZT part can be completely retained after sintering of the ceramics. Complex‐shaped PZT parts were successfully fabricated after using concentrated PZT suspension with low viscosity. Densities and electrical properties, such as the d33, the relative permittivity ε, the dielectric loss tgδ and the electromechanical coupling factor Kp of the gelcast PZT parts were also compared with those of the die‐pressed PZT samples. The results indicated that the gel‐forming process did not deteriorate the electrical properties of the samples, if proper dispersant was selected in developing concentrated ceramic slurry.
The Fabrication and Characterization of BaTiO3 Piezoceramics Using SLA 3D Printing at 465 nm Wavelength

Abstract:The additive manufacturing of BaTiO3 (BT) ceramics through stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing at 465 nm wavelength was demonstrated. After different milling times, different paste compositions with varied initial micron-sized powders were studied to find a composition suitable for 3D printing. The pastes were evaluated in terms of photopolymerization depth depending on the laser scanning speed. Furthermore, the microstructure and properties of the BT ceramic samples produced through SLA 3D printing were characterized and compared with those of ceramics fabricated through a conventional die semi-drying pressing method. Three-dimensional printed samples achieved relative densities over 0.95 and microhardness over 500 HV after sintering, nearly matching the relative density and microhardness attained by the pressed samples. Upon poling, the 3D-printed samples attained acceptable piezoelectric module d33 = 148 pC/N and dielectric constants over 2000. At near full density, BT piezoceramics were successfully fabricated through SLA 3D printing at 465 nm wavelength, achieving photopolymerization depth of more than 100 microns. This work paves the relatively low-cost way for 3D printing of piezoelectric ceramics using conventional micron-sized powders and high printed layer thickness.

Large-scale fabrication and performance improvement of polyvinylidene fluoride piezoelectric composite films

Abstract:Sensing applications such as wearable electronics, electronic skin, and soft robotics using flexible piezoelectric films have received extensive attention. In this study, we fabricate large-scale 0–3 type composite films of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-doped modified lead zirconate titanate (PZT) particles (PZT@UP) through an extrusion-casting process to enhance piezoelectric properties and explain the piezoelectric performance mechanism. The introduction of PZT@UP particles improved the dielectric permittivity of the composite films and promoted the polarization of PVDF, which positively affected the piezoelectric properties of PVDF/PZT@UP films. The composite film with 25 wt% PZT@UP possessed an excellent piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) of 29 pC/N, which was 93% higher than that of neat PVDF (15 pC/N). Moreover, the addition of PZT@UP particles effectively inhibited the movement of PVDF molecular chains and improved the mechanical modulus stability of the composite films. The law of electrostrictive effect of the PVDF/PZT@UP composite films is clarified from the aspects of the movement of PVDF molecular chains, the principle of electric field distribution, and the construction of the internal electric field. Further, the similarities and differences between the piezoelectric and electrostrictive mechanisms of the PVDF/PZT@UP composite films are summarized. The extrusion-casting process combined with modified fillers shows promising potential in improving wear and tear of and electricity generation from PVDF-based composite films, leading to a profound impact on the development of large-scale fabrication of piezoelectric sensors.

Abstract:Vat photopolymerization (VPP) has made significant achievements in the fabrication of BaTiO3 ceramics. However, the piezoelectric performance of pure BaTiO3 ceramics fabricated by VPP technology is poor. In this work, the piezoelectric properties of printed BaTiO3 ceramic were significantly improved by using the strategies of material modification. BaTiO3-xBaSnO3 (BT-xBS) green bodies with high quality were obtained under the conditions of a photoinitiator content of 2 wt% and an exposure energy of 100 mJ/cm2. The Curie peak of BT-xBS samples gradually moved to low temperature and the peak gradually widened. Piezoelectric constant (d 33 ) showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, and the maximum value appeared in BT-6BS samples. BT-6BS samples exhibited the excellent piezoelectric performance with piezoelectric constant (d 33 ), piezoelectric voltage constant (g 33 ) and transduction coefficient (d 33 ×g 33 ) reaching 283 pC/N, 15.02 × 10−3 Vm/N and 4.25 × 10−12 m2/N, respectively, which are 57%, 14% and 79% higher than those of printed pure BaTiO3 ceramics.

Abstract:Piezoelectric ceramic, as a typical smart material, shows great potential in applications of sensing & actuation, smart structure and energy harvesting. However, the use of traditional methods to fabricate complex and high-precision piezoelectric ceramic devices faces huge technical difficulties and high moulding costs. Direct ink writing is a typical additive manufacturing technology, but has limited capabilities when preparing ceramic products with complex unsupported structures. In this work, a combined process of direct ink writing (DIW) and secondary shaping of flexible ceramic green body has been developed and proved to produce complex piezoelectric ceramics. The PZT ink shows shear thinning behavior and appropriate viscoelasticity such as moderate viscosity and high storage modulus. The printed green body can be flexibly deformed and the samples after polarization show good piezoelectric properties, with an average d33 up to 265 pC/N. This work demonstrates an attractive method for geometrically complex piezoceramic with unique macro structure due to its simplicity and low cost, and provides a solution to the key problems in the existing manufacturing technology of 3D ceramics.
