Abstract:Annually laminated sediments in Lake Xiaolongwan, northeast China, contain a suite of n-alkanes (C17–C33) with a strong odd over even carbon number predominance. Biomarker n-alkane proxies (average chain length, Paq ratio, grass/tree ratio, carbon preference index and compound-specific δ13C values) were used to reconstruct climate changes that occurred over the last millennium. Compound-specific δ13C values show large differences between the distinctive chain length groups of n-alkanes that originate from algae, aquatic macrophytes and terrestrial plants. Long-chain n-alkanes (C27–C33) are predominantly derived from leaf wax lipids in the forest. Variations in long-chain n-alkane δ13C values may mainly record water-use efficiency, inasmuch as the contribution from C4 plants is negligible in the Lake Xiaolongwan catchment. Short- and middle-chain n-alkanes are mainly from algae and aquatic plants. They are strongly depleted in 13C. This feature may be linked to a methane-derived, negative δ13C pool and lake overturn, which regulates dinoflagellate blooms. Parallel fluctuations are observed in δ13C27–31 values, Paq, and the grass/tree ratio throughout the record. Variations in δ13C27–31 values and Paq are in agreement with historical documents on summer and winter climate conditions. They support earlier suggestions that δ13C values in the long-chain n-alkanes and Paq may be useful indicators of effective precipitation or drought stress in this forested area. The δ13C27–31 index and Paq show distinct decadal variations. Periods with high δ13C27–31 values and a low Paq index correspond with the warm phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Values are reversed during PDO cool phases. At the decadal timescale, summer monsoon rainfall in northeast China over the last millennium may have been regulated mainly by the PDO.
Glacial-interglacial Vegetation Changes in Northeast China Inferred from Isotopic Composition of Pyrogenic Carbon from Lake Xingkai Sediments

Abstract:Understanding the changes in monsoon intensity and ecosystem response at different timescales is crucial for the well-being of humans, yet the paleoclimatic interpretation of stable carbon isotope (delta C-13) values from northeast China records is debatable. In this study, reported delta C-13 data from 76 surface soils in northeast China are compiled, and a delta C-13 record of pyrogenic carbon (delta C-13(pyc)) from Lake Xingkai in northeast China since the last interglacial period is presented. The aim was to investigate the orbital timescale environmental implication of geological delta C-13(pyc) data for northeast China. The results showed a distinct increase in delta C-13 values of surface soils, which correlated with increasing temperature of the warmest month. Higher temperature favored the expansion of C-4 plants, while precipitation had only a weak correlation with delta C-13 values of surface soils in the region. On an orbital timescale, the delta C-13(pyc) record from Lake Xingkai generally reflected paleovegetation change, suggesting that the abundance of C-4 plants was relatively high during the warm periods, changing to almost purely C-3 plants during the cold periods. Both modern and geological analysis suggest that the climatic factor determining the delta C-13 in northeast China was temperature of the warmest month. This is similar to the situation for mid-latitudes such as the Chinese Loess Plateau, in contrast to low latitudes such as southern China. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Multi proxy records relating to climate and vegetation have been obtained for a core spanning the last 40 kyr from the Heqing Lake Basin (26°N, 100°E; 2200 m asl.), Yunnan Province of southwestern China. Compound-specific carbon isotope records for the vascular plant leaf wax hydrocarbons, the C23–C33 n-alkanes, and for the algal hydrocarbons, the C23 and C25 n-alkenes and a C30 cyclobotryococcatriene, all show a shift of circa +3‰ in δ 13C values from MIS 3 to the end of MIS 2, followed by a rapid return to lighter values. This shift (from −32 to −29‰) for the n-alkanes and n-alkenes most likely derives from bicarbonate utilization by aquatic plants in the lake, rather than increased C4 photosynthesis. Thus, both pollen data and hydrocarbon data appear to reveal a rise and fall in the contributions of submerged and/or floating plants during MIS 2.

Abstract:Variations in foliar stable carbon isotope signatures (delta C-13) of different plant functional groups (PFGs) and their relationships with environmental factors in China were investigated in this meta-analysis. There were some significant, but small differences in delta C-13 among PFGs categorised by life form (<1 parts per thousand). Trees (-26.78 parts per thousand) and shrubs (-26.89 parts per thousand) had similar mean delta C-13 that were significantly higher than those of herbs (-27.49 parts per thousand). Evergreen shrubs (-25.82 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than deciduous shrubs (-26.92 parts per thousand). Perennial herbs (-26.83 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than annual herbs (-27.10 parts per thousand). Grasses (-26.46 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than forbs (-26.96 parts per thousand). For pooled data, delta C-13 was significantly and negatively correlated with mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT), while it was significantly and positively correlated with latitude and altitude. There was a threshold value of MAP along the gradients, and delta C-13 did not change significantly with higher rainfall. The delta C-13 of PFGs changed with altitude, suggesting that increases in delta C-13 with altitude cannot be generalised. Differences in delta C-13 between PFGs were generally much <1 parts per thousand and therefore insignificant. In contrast, MAP and MAT had relatively large effects on delta C-13 (more than 4 parts per thousand between extremes). The delta C-13 of some PFGs responded to environmental gradients in the same manner, while their rates of change were significantly different in some cases. This information could help predict potential changes in the distribution of PFGs in response to future climate change.

Abstract:Delta C-14 values were measured from tree-rings (1948-2018) of Pinus tabuliformis Carr. that grew at the Shangdianzi (SDZ) regional background site in China. The objectives of this study are to establish a record of atmospheric Delta C-14, and to evaluate the influences of Chinese atmospheric nuclear tests and fossil carbon emissions on atmospheric Delta C-14 variations. The SDZ tree-ring Delta C-14 values are negative before 1956, and increase dramatically in response to global atmospheric nuclear tests, with a peak value of 844.0 +/- 4.2 parts per thousand in 1964. After the Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963, the Delta C-14 values at SDZ decrease exponentially during 1964-2018. The half-life of the Delta C-14 decrease was protracted by approximately 2.7 yr during 1964-1984, due to Chinese atmospheric nuclear tests as well as Chinese forests as a carbon source during that period. Massive fossil carbon emissions in China lead to the SDZ decrease rate that is about 1.8 parts per thousand yr(-1) faster than that for the Northern Hemisphere background region during 2000-2010. SDZ Delta C-14 since 2000 show strong negative correlations with fossil carbon emissions from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region (r(2) = 0.954) and China (r(2) = 0.950), and a 1%o decrease in SDZ Delta C-14 indicates an increase of 2.3 +/- 0.2 Mt C and 23.3 +/- 1.7 Mt C fossil carbon emissions from the BTH region and China, respectively.

Abstract:Radiocarbon (14C) is a unique and important tool for understanding carbon cycle in the nature, and its use can be significantly enhanced where reliable historical atmospheric Δ14CO2 records can be established. In China, continuous atmospheric Δ14CO2 records since the 1950s are scarce, a period when dramatic variations of Δ14CO2 occurred caused by intensive human activities. In this research, Δ14C of Qinghai spruce tree rings collected from Huangzhong (HZ) (36.27°N, 101.67°E, 2982 m amsl) were measured by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, and a Δ14CO2 time series from 1957 to 2015 was reconstructed. The results show that HZ Δ14C was generally higher than the contemporaneous average level in the mid-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The peak value of HZ Δ14C occurred in 1964 (as bomb peak) was higher than that of other tree ring records in East Asia at a similar latitude, likely due to the impact of the atmosphere nuclear tests at Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan). The record shows no obvious disturbance of Lop Nor nuclear weapons tests (in Northwest China) during 1964-1980, except for 1971. A local Suess effect began to appear since 2001, and the estimated atmospheric fossil fuel-derived CO2 (CO2ff) concentration increased from 3.5 ppm to 8.8 ppm from 2006 to 2015. This is associated with the implementation of the "Western Development" strategy in China. HZ Δ14C records document background Δ14C data, useful for regional carbon cycle research and atmospheric CO2ff quantification in the region. These data also provide baseline values for assessment environmental safety connected with nuclear power plants in China.

Abstract:Leaf carbon isotope composition (delta C-13) of both vascular and non-vascular plants were investigated in order to assess their variability along an altitude gradient (414, 620, 850, 1086, 1286 and 1462 m) from a subtropical monsoon forest located at Mt. Tianmu Reserve, eastern China. Leaf delta C-13 values of all plant species ranged from -34.4 to -26.6 parts per thousand, with an average of -29.8 parts per thousand. There is no significant difference in leaf delta C-13 between vascular plants and mosses, however, trees had significantly higher delta C-13 values than herbs. For pooled data, leaf delta C-13 was positively correlated with altitude. Leaf delta C-13 was significantly and negatively correlated with annual mean temperature and atmospheric pressure, while it was significantly and positively correlated with soil water content. Furthermore, there was no relationship between leaf delta C-13 and soil nitrogen content or soil phosphorus content. The altitudinal trend in leaf delta C-13 is the consequence of the interaction between temperature, atmospheric pressure and soil water content.
Test Stable Carbon Isotopic Composition of Soil Organic Matters As a Proxy Indicator of Past Precipitation: Study of the Sand Fields in Northern China

Abstract:Understanding the stable carbon isotopic composition (delta C-13) of surface soil organic matter under various climates is crucial for quantitative reconstruction of past climatic changes. Although the relationship between precipitation and plant delta C-13 is well understood at global and regional scale, studies relating delta C-13 of surface soil organic matter to precipitation in northern China remain controversial. In this study, 90 surface soil samples were collected from the desert/loess transition zone of Northern China, where vegetation is sensitive to climatic changes. The stable carbon isotopic composition of organic matter in these soil samples was analyzed in order to examine its palaeoclimatic implications. Our results show that the delta C-13 varied from -26.56 to -19.41% among the investigated sites, with an average of -23.54%. There was a strong negative correlation between the delta C-13 of surface soils and the mean annual precipitation (MAP) (R-2 - 0.52, p < 0.05). Variation in the delta C-13 of C-3 plants was the main factor that determined the delta C-13 of soil organic matter. The C-4/C-3 biomass ratio may also contribute to the delta C-13 changes, but this effect was relatively minor in our study area. Our findings suggest that a general transform function between the proxy index delta C-13 value and climates may not be applicable at one specific site, and that a comprehensive investigation is needed when reconstructing the past climate change using the delta C-13 of buried soils. Abstract:1. Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics is crucial for evaluating ecosystem carbon balance and its feedback to climate warming. However, it is difficult to detect statistically significant changes in SOC stock over short-time period due to its large pool size, slow turnover time and huge spatial heterogeneity. Stable isotopic measurements, such as Delta delta C-13 (i.e. the difference of natural abundance of C-13 and C-12 (delta C-13) between surface soils and source plants) and its variations along environmental gradients provide an alternative approach inferring soil carbon dynamics over broad geographical scale. However, current isotopic evidence is primarily derived from temperate and tropical regions, with very limited measurements available in alpine regions. 2. Here, we examined spatial variations of Delta delta C-13 in alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau, using large-scale isotopic measurements obtained from consecutive field samplings. We aimed to test whether previously observed isotopic patterns in temperate and tropical regions still hold true in alpine regions and whether climatic or edaphic variables regulated large-scale patterns of C-13 enrichment between soil and vegetation in alpine ecosystems. 3. Our results showed that topsoil stable carbon isotope composition in alpine steppe and meadow ranged from -26.1 parts per thousand to -19. 7 parts per thousand and from -25.7 parts per thousand to -22.2 parts per thousand, with an average of -23.7 parts per thousand and -24.1 parts per thousand, respectively. As previously observed in temperate forests, soil delta C-13 exhibited linear increases with plant delta C-13 in alpine grasslands. 4. In contrast to earlier findings, our results revealed that edaphic rather than climatic factors regulated spatial variability of the Delta delta C-13 in high-altitude regions. Moreover, edaphic controls over Delta delta C-13 exhibited meaningful differences between alpine steppe and meadow. The Delta delta C-13 exhibited an initial increase and a subsequent decrease with soil carbon content in alpine steppe, but was negatively associated with silt content and carbon: nitrogen ratio in alpine meadow. 5. Our results confirmed the association between the delta C-13 of surface soils and vegetation across contrasting ecosystems, but revealed that edaphic rather than climatic variables were better explanations of C-13 enrichment between soil and vegetation at high altitudes. Changes in soil texture and substrate quality could therefore induce soil carbon dynamics in alpine ecosystems.
Carbon and Oxygen Isotopic Records from Lake Tuosu over the Last 120 Years in the Qaidam Basin, Northwestern China: the Implications for Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction

Abstract:Isotopic compositions of total organic carbon (TOC) and authigenic carbonate in lakes have been widely used to reconstruct paleoclimatic changes and the depositional environments of lake sediments. However, since these proxies are often controlled by multiple environmental factors, detailed examinations of modern environmental processes is necessary before further applying them into paleoclimatic studies, especially in arid/semi-arid northwestern China. Here we generate High-resolution multi-proxy sedimentary records from Lake Tuosu, a hydrologically closed, saline and alkaline lake located at the north margin of the Qaidam Basin, through analysis of carbon isotope of TOC, and δ18O and δ13C values of ostracods over the last 120years. Together with the meteorological data (precipitation and temperature), lake area record, and other tree-ring evidence, we examine how these sedimentary indices respond to changes in hydrologic balance and climate at interannual to decadal timescales. We found that sedimentary δ13Corg values resemble the variation of lake areas of Lake Tuosu over the last 40years, suggesting that δ13Corg values would be an ideal indicator of lake area/level fluctuations and thus effective moisture variations (precipitation vs. evaporation). However, ostracod δ18O, which was previously used as proxies of effective precipitation, is not well correlated with δ13Corg values in Lake Tuosu. Therefore, the changes of ostracod δ18O values cannot be straightforwardly explained as the effective precipitation. Instead, the isotopic composition of carbonate would be additionally controlled by other factors including isotopic compositions of input water and drainage pattern.
Aridity-driven Decoupling of Δ13c Between Pedogenic Carbonate and Soil Organic Matter

Abstract:Pedogenic carbonate is an invaluable archive for reconstructing continental paleoclimate and paleoecology. The delta C-13 of pedogenic carbonate (delta C-13(c)) has been widely used to document the rise and expansion of C-4 plants over the Cenozoic. This application requires a fundamental presumption that in soil pores, soil-respired CO2 dominates over atmospheric CO2 during the formation of pedogenic carbonates. However, the decoupling between delta C-13, and delta C-13 of soil organic matter (delta C-13(SOM)) have been observed, particularly in arid regions, suggesting that this presumption is not always valid. To evaluate the influence of atmospheric CO2 on soil delta C-13(c), here we performed systematic delta C-13 analyses of paleosols across the Chinese Loess Plateau, with the sample ages spanning three intervals: the Holocene, the Late Pleistocene, and the mid-Pliocene warm period. Our paired delta C-13(c), and delta C-13(SOM) data reveal broadly divergent trending patterns. Using a two-component Ca-mixing model, we show substantial incorporations of atmospheric CO2 (up to 60%) into soil pore space during carbonate precipitation. This result readily explains the enrichment of delta C-13(c) and its divergence from delta C-13(SOM). As a consequence, delta C-13 of pedogenic carbonates formed under semiarid and/or arid conditions are largely driven by regional aridity through its control on soil CO2 composition, and thus cannot be used to evaluate the relative abundance of C-3 versus C-4 plants. Nonetheless, these carbonates can be applied for atmospheric CO2 reconstructions, even for periods with low CO2 levels.
Δ 14 C level of annual plants and fossil fuel derived CO 2 distribution across different regions of China

Abstract:The C-14 level in annual plants is a sensitive tracer for monitoring fossil fuel derived CO2 in the atmosphere. Corn leave samples were selected from different regions of China, including high mountains in the Tibetan Plateau, grassland in Inner Mongolia, and inland and coastal cities during the summer of 2010. The C-14/C-12 ratio of the samples was measured with the NEC compact AMS system at the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics, Peking University. The fossil fuel derived CO2 was estimated by comparing the measured Delta C-14 values of corn leave samples to background atmospheric Delta C-14 level. The influences of topography, meteorological conditions and carbon cycling processes on the fossil fuel derived CO2 concentration are considered when interpreting the data. Our results show a clear association of the low Delta C-14 values with regions where human activities are intensive. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Given that cities contributed most of China's CO2 emissions, understanding the emission characteristics of urban atmospheric CO2 is critical for regulating CO2 emissions. Regular observations of atmospheric CO2 concentration, △14C and δ13C values were performed at four different sites in Xi'an, China in 2016 to illustrate the temporal and spatial variations of CO2 emissions and recognize their sources and sinks in urban carbon cycles. We found seasonal variations in CO2 concentration and δ13C values, the peak to peak amplitude of which was 80.8ppm for CO2 concentration and 4.0‰ for its δ13C. With regard to the spatial variations, the urban CO2 "dome" effect was the most pronounced during the winter season. The use of △14C combines with δ13C measurements aid in understanding the emission patterns. The results show that in the winter season, emissions from fossil fuel derived CO2 (CO2ff) contributed 61.8±10.6% and 57.4±9.7% of the excess CO2 (CO2ex) in urban and suburban areas respectively. Combining with the result of estimated δ13C value of fossil fuel (δ13Cff=-24‰), which suggest coal burning was the dominant source of fossil fuel emissions. In contrast, the proportions of CO2ff in CO2ex varied more in the summer season than that in the winter season, ranging from 42.3% to >100% with the average contributions of 82.5±23.8% and 90.0±24.8%. Given the estimation of δ13C value of local sources (δ13Cs) was -21.9‰ indicates that the intensively biogenic activities, such as soil respiration and corn growth have significantly impacted urban carbon cycles, and occasionally played a role of carbon sink.
Late Quaternary Carbon Cycling Responses to Environmental Change Revealed by Multi-Proxy Analyses of a Sediment Core from an Upland Lake in Southwest China

Abstract:Stable carbon isotope (δ13C) values of organic matter in lacustrine sediments are commonly used to trace past changes in terrestrial and aquatic carbon cycles. Here we use a high-resolution, well-dated δ13C record from Lake Tengchongqinghai (TCQH) in southwestern China, together with other proxy indices, to reconstruct the paleolimnological history over the past 18.5ka. Organic matter in the sediments of Lake TCQH is derived predominately from aquatic macrophytes. The lacustrine primary productivity is closely linked with lake-level changes affected by variations in the strength of the Asian summer monsoon and modified by evapotranspiration. Similar to lake sediments world-wide, a ca. −3‰ shift occurred in the δ13C values of Lake TCQH in response to the significant increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration during the last deglaciation. In the Holocene, the availability of dissolved CO2 in the lake water of Lake TCQH was determined by variations in hydraulic energy: low water turbulence creates a thick, stagnant boundary layer around aquatic plants, which will restrict the rate of CO2 diffusion and result in more positive δ13C values of aquatic plants. In contrast, significant water turbulence dramatically reduces the boundary layer thickness leading to more negative δ13C values of aquatic plants.
Water Depth Variation and Its Impact on Carbonate Content and Oxygen Isotopes: A Study from a Satellite Lake Near Lake Qinghai over the Past 7.6 Kyr

Abstract:The oxygen isotopic composition of sedimentary carbonate (δ18Ocarb) provides information on the regional water balance between precipitation and evaporation in a lacustrine system. A volume effect was proposed to explain the abnormally low δ18Ocarb values in Lake Qinghai on the northern Tibetan Plateau, under the conditions of high evaporation and low water levels, as observed during the early Holocene. Volume effect theory states that the small volume of the lake and its sensitivity to isotopic signals from freshwater discharge control the δ18Ocarb values. In this study, we present 7.6-kyr records of carbonate content and oxygen isotopes from Lake Gahai, a small and saline satellite lake near Lake Qinghai. The records demonstrate that the water level and lake size of Lake Gahai considerably changed over the past 7.6 kyr, and the volume effect was responsible for the δ18Ocarb variations. The records also suggest contrasting responses of carbonate precipitation to water depth across different timescales. For example, over the past 7.6 kyr, the carbonate content decreased with increasing lake water levels. This can be explained by gradual water freshening under low evaporation conditions and enhanced connection between Lake Qinghai and Lake Gahai. On the centennial scale, however, the carbonate content varied significantly and was positively correlated with Lake Gahai's water level. Such a variation is probably due to the periodically lower lake water levels and a stronger influence of terrestrial clastic material, which contributed to the dilution of the carbonate content under centennial cool and dry periods. Therefore, in order to advance our understanding of past hydroclimatic variations in the climatically sensitive region, information across different timescales should be separated.

Abstract:Δ14C values were measured from tree-rings (1948–2018) of Pinus tabuliformis Carr. that grew at the Shangdianzi (SDZ) regional background site in China. The objectives of this study are to establish a record of atmospheric Δ14C, and to evaluate the influences of Chinese atmospheric nuclear tests and fossil carbon emissions on atmospheric Δ14C variations. The SDZ tree-ring Δ14C values are negative before 1956, and increase dramatically in response to global atmospheric nuclear tests, with a peak value of 844.0 ± 4.2‰ in 1964. After the Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963, the Δ14C values at SDZ decrease exponentially during 1964–2018. The half-life of the Δ14C decrease was protracted by approximately 2.7 yr during 1964–1984, due to Chinese atmospheric nuclear tests as well as Chinese forests as a carbon source during that period. Massive fossil carbon emissions in China lead to the SDZ decrease rate that is about 1.8‰ yr−1 faster than that for the Northern Hemisphere background region during 2000–2010. SDZ Δ14C since 2000 show strong negative correlations with fossil carbon emissions from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region (r2 = 0.954) and China (r2 = 0.950), and a 1‰ decrease in SDZ Δ14C indicates an increase of 2.3 ± 0.2 Mt C and 23.3 ± 1.7 Mt C fossil carbon emissions from the BTH region and China, respectively.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that the oxygen isotope ratio (delta(18)O) of plant cellulose can serve as a sensitive proxy indicator of past climate, but its application has mainly been restricted to tree-rings. Here we present a 6000-year high-resolution delta(18)O record of peat plant cellulose from northeastern China. The delta(18)O Variation is interpreted as reflecting changes in regional surface air temperature. The climate events inferred from the isotope data agree well with archaeological and historic evidence. The record shows a striking correspondence of climate events to nearly all of the apparent solar activity changes characterized by the atmospheric radiocarbon in tree-rings over the past 6000 years. Spectral analysis of the delta(18)O record reveals the periodicities of around 86, 93, 101, 110, 127, 132, 140, 155, 207, 245, 311, 590, 820 and 1046 years, which are similar to those detected in the solar excursions. We consider these observations as further evidence for a close relationship between solar activity and climate variations on timescales of decades to centuries. Our results also have implications for distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic contributions to future climate change.

Abstract:As the most economically developed region in China, the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region contributed to ~17% of the total anthropogenic CO2 emissions from China. However, the studies of atmospheric CO2 and CH4 in this area are relatively sparse and unsystematic. Here, we analyze the changing characters of those gases in different development periods of China, based on the 11-year atmospheric CO2 and CH4 records (from 2010 to 2020) at one of the four Chinese sites participating in the World Meteorological Organization/Global Atmospheric Watch (WMO/GAW) program (Lin'an regional background station), located in the center of YRD region, China. The annual average atmospheric CO2 and CH4 mole fractions at LAN have been increasing continuously, with growth rates of 2.57 ± 0.14 ppm yr−1 and 10.3 ± 1.3 ppb yr−1, respectively. Due to the complex influence of regional sources and sinks, the characteristics of atmospheric CO2 and CH4 varied in different periods: (i) The diurnal and seasonal variations of both CO2 and CH4 in different periods were overall similar, but the amplitudes were different. (ii) The elevated mole fractions in all wind sectors tended to be uniform. (iii) The potential source regions of both gases expanded over time. (iv) The growth rate in recent years (2016–2020) changed significantly less than that in the earlier period (2010–2015). Our results indicated that the CO2 and CH4 mole fractions were mainly correlated to the regional economic development, despite the influence of special events such as the G20 Summit and COVID-19 lockdown.

Regional Δ14C Patterns and Fossil Fuel Derived CO2 Distribution in the Beijing Area Using Annual Plants

Abstract:The level of atmospheric Δ14C and the fossil fuel derived CO2 concentration in the Beijing area from May to September, 2009, were systematically analyzed based on radiocarbon (14C) measurements of annual plants by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The results show that the maximum Δ14C in Beijing was 29.6‰±2.2‰, and the minimum was −28.2‰±2.5‰, with a trend of decreasing Δ14C from the outer suburbs to inner suburbs to the urban center. This trend correlates well with increases in fossil fuel derived CO2 caused by human activities such as population density, industrial emissions and traffic, with lower values of atmospheric Δ14C associated with more intensive human activities. The fossil fuel derived CO2 concentrations from May to September, 2009, ranged from 3.9±1.0 ppm to 25.4±1.0 ppm. It was calculated that each additional 1 ppm of CO2 from fossil fuels depleted the atmospheric Δ14C by approximately 2.70‰. This study suggests that 14C measurements of annual plants by AMS provide an effective method to rapidly trace fossil fuel derived CO2.

Abstract:Reconstructing the history of tree cover and exploring the relationship between forest growth and environmental factors are of great significance for predicting future vegetation changes and guiding ecosystem restoration and protection. On the basis of pollen data of two lake cores and three peat profiles in the central-northern parts of the Daxing'an Mountains and using multiple methods, we quantitatively reconstructed the tree cover of the past 2000 years. We found that the reconstruction results of the different methods are quite similar. Among all these methods, random forest had the highest prediction accuracy for modern pollen samples. Therefore, the random forest reconstruction results can better reflect changes in regional tree cover, which was approximately 38%-42% during 2000-200 Cal yr BP. It then obviously increased from a low value of approximately 40% to a modern level of approximately 45%. The precipitation and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration were the main drivers for the tree cover before and after 200 Cal yr BP, respectively. This indicates that environments with elevated CO2 level in the near future will benefit the growth of vegetation in the central-northern parts of the Daxing'an Mountains. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd.
