Abstract:For most writers the science is either an exotic setting or a source of thrilling conflict that would drive the story forward. For a communicator it is the other way around - the science is neatly wrapped in a package of literary tools that make it "invisible" while it remains tangible and most importantly - it can be conveyed to the reader in understandable terms. There are many examples showing how these seemingly contradicting goals can complement each other successfully. I will review how the science was communicated by mainstream and genre writers of yesterday and today, and in different (not necessarily anglophone) cultures. I will bring forward the best and the worst examples that illuminate various astronomical concepts. Finally, I will discuss how we can use them both in outreach and education. Contrary to many similar summaries I will concentrate on some often overlooked mainstream literary examples, including the plays The Physicists by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Copenhagen by Michael Frayn, the novel White Garments by Vl. Dudintsev and even an episode of the Inspector Morse TV show, featuring scientists. I will also mention in passing a few less well known genre books.

Abstract:Since 2004, I have been collaborating with artist Josiah McElheny on the design of cosmological sculptures, inspired originally by the chandeliers of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. The four works that we have completed to date have appeared in galleries and museums in the United States, England, and Spain. In this article, I describe the history of the project and offer some conclusions about collaborations between scientists and artists. A companion article presents the scientific background of the sculptures in greater depth.

Abstract:In this essay the authors reflect on some recent trends in science communication research, celebrating it as an inherently interdisciplinary endeavour. Some current tendencies in science communication are more limiting, however: they present theoretical and strategic prescriptions that do not adquately reflect the variety and cultural diversity of science communication internationally. Rethinking science communication in the context of such diverse practices and cultural reorientations, the authors revise some of their own views and revisit notions of communication as conversation to propose an inclusive definition of science communication as the social conversation around science.

Abstract:As the title suggests, Science Fiction in Translation (2021) explores the afterlife of several Science Fiction works in Translation from non-Anglophone to Anglophone and vice versa. Edited by Ian Campbell, a well-known scholar in the field of Arabic science fiction, the volume highlights the role of translation in influencing the global popularity of this genre. In the introduction, Campbell argues that since translation is not a transparent process, distortions are an inexorable phenomenon. He contends that the process of translating SF is not merely a matter of finding equivalence between two languages; it also involves “cognitive, linguistic, visual, cultural and ideological phenomena” (3–4). He draws on Lawrence Venuti’s concepts of domestication and foreignness to expound on how the former distorts a common feature of SF, estrangement. He claims that translating SF through a domestication strategy removes or weakens some salient aspects of the text’s original meaning. Consequently, it minimizes the estrangement of the source text, which almost inevitably makes the translation less impactful. Apart from the introduction, this volume comprises 15 essays exploring a wide range of translations from different languages to English and vice versa. These translations include the following: Catalan to English, Russian to English, Swedish to English, French to English, Arabic to English as well as French to English, Spanish to English, and Hungarian to English (in addition to Indian Bengali works, which are yet to be translated to English). The volume is wide in its scope covering many languages and offering interesting perspectives from various countries. This contribution comes as a part of an ongoing book series about Studies in Global Science Fiction, published by Palgrave Macmillan Cham.
Bridging the gap between science and the humanities: A study of Wang Jinkang's universe-themed science fiction

Abstract:This paper discusses several of Wang Jinkang's science-fiction works on the subject of the universe, such as With Me, Escape from the Mother Universe, Heavenly Father and Earthly Mother and Cosmic Crystal Egg. Based on an analysis of these works and Wang's creative writing trajectory, the paper summarizes the distinctive features of such universe-themed works: scientific rationality, fairy-tale-style plot setting, human–God duality and rational humanistic compassion. It concludes that Wang's works have not only crossed the gap between science and the humanities but also built a bridge between the two. Finally, this paper suggests that science-fiction writers provide a unique perspective for the reader by building a bridge between science and the humanities.

Spell-checking, word counts, and readability analysis, give today's novelists tools that Dickens, Austen, and Shakespeare could only have dreamt of. However, such tools have focused on the word, or phrase levels. In the last decade, research focus has shifted to support for collaborative editing of documents. Abstract:Scientific publishing is a cornerstone of disseminating knowledge. One caveat of scientific publishing is that at any one time it is biased toward certain topics relative to others, a reflection of the dynamic nature of scientific discovery over time and the emergence of new technologies. As a result, some areas of cancer biology remain understudied and poorly understood. This reality is compounded by additional factors at play. For example, the ability to bridge gaps in knowledge may prove difficult if investigators from disparate fields are unaware of each other's work; such investigators may be located in entirely different institutions, if not countries. Alternatively, some areas of cancer research have remained understudied because there is a need for technologies or datasets that have yet to be created. Collectively, these "missed" opportunities within scientific publishing that are centered within the realm of convergence science represent an opportunity for Cancer Research .

Abstract:Co-authorship in publications within a discipline uncovers interesting properties of the analysed field. We represent collaboration in academic papers of computer science in terms of differently grained networks, including those sub-networks that emerge from conference and journal co-authorship only. We take advantage of the network science paraphernalia to take a picture of computer science collaboration including all papers published in the field since 1936. We investigate typical bibliometric properties like scientific productivity of authors and collaboration level in papers, as well as large-scale network properties like reachability and average separation distance among scholars, distribution of the number of scholar collaborators, network resilience and dependence on star collaborators, network clustering, and network assortativity by number of collaborators.
