Abstract:This recounting of the history of the last three-and-a-half decades of advanced accelerator concepts is offered from a decidedly parochial point of view -- that of the career of the author, Prof. James Rosenzweig of the UCLA Dept. of Physics and Astronomy. This short voyage through a by-now long career will illustrate the very beginning of the compelling field of advanced accelerators, proceed through their maturation into one of the fastest growing areas of beam-based science, and give a look into their emerging importance in applications. An important aspect of advanced accelerators is their relationship to other burgeoning fields, particularly free-electron lasers. The framework of this retelling lends itself particularly well to illustrating this relationship. Likewise, this quick summary serves to demonstrate the essential team nature of our field, and the contributions of participants from all levels, ranging from students to those scientists whose careers may have developed in previous eras of positive ferment in accelerator science.

Abstract:In this article, I set out arguments why the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) : the machine and the experiments with it, are a watershed for particle physics. I give a historical perspective of the essential link between development of particle accelerators and that in our knowledge of the laws governing interactions among the fundamental particles, showing how this journey has reached destination LHC. I explain how the decisions for the LHC design; the energy and number of particles in the beam, were arrived at. I will end by discussing the LHC physics agenda and the time line in which the particle physicists hope to achieve it.

Abstract:For most writers the science is either an exotic setting or a source of thrilling conflict that would drive the story forward. For a communicator it is the other way around - the science is neatly wrapped in a package of literary tools that make it "invisible" while it remains tangible and most importantly - it can be conveyed to the reader in understandable terms. There are many examples showing how these seemingly contradicting goals can complement each other successfully. I will review how the science was communicated by mainstream and genre writers of yesterday and today, and in different (not necessarily anglophone) cultures. I will bring forward the best and the worst examples that illuminate various astronomical concepts. Finally, I will discuss how we can use them both in outreach and education. Contrary to many similar summaries I will concentrate on some often overlooked mainstream literary examples, including the plays The Physicists by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Copenhagen by Michael Frayn, the novel White Garments by Vl. Dudintsev and even an episode of the Inspector Morse TV show, featuring scientists. I will also mention in passing a few less well known genre books.

Abstract:In 2008 Nico van Kampen wrote in his letter {\it The scandal of quantum mechanics}: ``The scandal is that there are still many articles, discussions and textbooks, which advertise various interpretations and philosophical profundities." Not much has changed since then, while social media have given a platform for more of what Nico would term ``a scandal''. A detailed viewpoint is presented on the status of quantum mechanics, distilled from two decades of work with Armen Allahverdyan and Roger Balian on the dynamical solution of Curie-Weiss models for quantum measurement. It embodies a certain minimal form of the statistical interpretation and stays clear of ontological connections. Along the way, comments on various related subjects, terms and interpretations are given.

Abstract:We start by remarks on the scientific and societal context of today's theoretical physics. Major classes of models for physics to be explored at the LHC are then reviewed. This leads us to propose an LHC timeline and a list of potential effects on theoretical physics and the society. We then explore three conceptual questions connected with the LHC physics: symmetry (and symmetry breaking), effective field theory, and fine tuning.

Abstract:An explicit mass formula is proposed for three active neutrinos and their heavy sterile (righthanded) counterparts in the framework of seesaw mechanism. The formula correlates reasonably the experimental estimates for the solar $\Delta m^2_{12}$ and atmospheric $\Delta m^2_{32}$ in the case of hierarchical spectrum $m^2_1 \ll m^2_2 \ll m^2_3 $ of active neutrinos. The lightest heavy neutrino is predicted to be $O(10^5)$ times lighter than the heaviest. An efficient mass formula, proposed previously for charged leptons, is recalled and coordinated with the new mass formula for neutrinos.

Abstract:This is a great, concise and extremely clear and well-written book about complex questions. It is about STS work. Even if the author does not see many places that could be a home for STS researchers, the book radiates a homely feeling even so. The book is also about synthetic biology. I started this review with a homely metaphor because one of the brilliant moves this book makes is that the reader gets to visit a different room in each chapter. In each room the concern is synthetic biology. There is the conference room, the laboratory, the classroom, the art studio, the coffee room, the bioethics building (they get a whole building!), the policy room and there is even an ivory tower. It is more or less possible to visit each of the rooms as an outsider (read: STS researcher).

Abstract:Fundamental particle physics is at a cross road. On the one hand the Standard Model successfully accounts for all experimental observations to date. On the other hand the ElectroWeak symmetry breaking mechanism is poorly understood and suggests the existence of new physics within reach of future colliders. Building on LHC experience, a hadron collider using the well established LHC magnet technology in a 90--100km circular ring, can reach the required 50--60TeV energy range and uncover the next layers of reality by the early 2040s.
