Abstract:In this paper, the collision formulas applying to any elastic collision was derived. Using the formulas, we have investigated the beam lifetime and the particle distribution's change caused by the coulomb scattering with the residual gas in HLSII. It is shown that the estimated beam lifetime shows a good agreement with the theoretical value. And the particle distribution in a bunch has diffusion in transverse direction due to the beam gas coulomb scattering.

Abstract:Besides characteristic target and projectile x rays, x-ray continua and radiative-electron-capture photons are seen in collisions with relativistic heavy ions ranging in energy from 82 to 422 MeV/amu and in atomic number from Xe to U. The angular distribution, centroid energy, cross section, and line shape of the broad radiative-electron-capture lines are analyzed. The observed continua are due to primary- and secondary-electron bremsstrahlung. In the projectile frame, primary bremsstrahlung is the radiative scattering of incident target electrons from the projectile nucleus. The continuum cross sections and angular distributions are calculated, and are compared with experiment. Secondary-electron bremsstrahlung, due to the radiative scattering of ionized target electrons from other target nuclei, is target-thickness dependent, and the cross section increases roughly with the square of the target atomic number. The calculated primary-electron bremsstrahlung cross sections are lower than experiment.
A generalized scattering theory in quantum mechanics

Abstract:In quantum mechanics textbooks, a single-particle scattering theory is introduced. In the present work, a generalized scattering theory is presented, which can be in principle applied to the scattering problems of arbitrary number of particle. In laboratory frame, a generalized Lippmann-Schwinger scattering equation is derived. We emphasized that the derivation is rigorous, even for treating infinitesimals. No manual operation such as analytical continuation is allowed. In the case that before scattering N particles are plane waves and after the scattering they are new plane waves, the transition amplitude and transition probability are given and the generalized S matrix is presented. It is proved that the transition probability from a set of plane waves to a new set of plane waves of the N particles equal to that of the reciprocal process. The generalized theory is applied to the cases of one- and two-particle scattering as two examples. When applied to single-particle scattering problems, our generalized formalism degrades to that usually seen in the literature. When our generalized theory is applied to two-particle scattering problems, the formula of the transition probability of two-particle collision is given. It is shown that the transition probability of the scattering of two free particles is identical to that of the reciprocal process. This transition probability and the identity are needed in deriving Boltzmann transport equation in statistical mechanics. The case of identical particles is also discussed.

Abstract:Target $K$-vacancy and $L$-x-ray production cross sections in collisions with relativistic (82---670-MeV/amu) heavy ions ranging from Ne to U are measured and compared with atomic theories of inner-shell ionization based on the plane-wave Born approximation. Because the counting methods used are unique in atomic physics, careful studies of experimental uncertainties are made. Corrections to the measured cross sections due to x-ray pileup and secondary interactions in the solid targets are also discussed.
Boundaries of universality of thermal collisions for atom-atom scattering

Abstract:Thermal rate coefficients for some atomic collisions have been observed to be remarkably independent of the details of interatomic interactions at short range. This makes these rate coefficients universal functions of the long-range interaction parameters and masses, which was previously exploited to develop a self-defining atomic sensor for ambient pressure. Here, we employ rigorous quantum scattering calculations to examine the response of thermally averaged rate coefficients for atom-atom collisions to changes in the interaction potentials. We perform a comprehensive analysis of the universality, and the boundaries thereof, by treating the quantum scattering observables as probabilistic predictions determined by a distribution of interaction potentials. We show that there is a characteristic change of the resulting distributions of rate coefficients, separating light, few-electron atoms and heavy, polarizable atoms. We produce diagrams that illustrate the boundaries of the thermal collision universality at different temperatures and provide guidance for future experiments seeking to exploit the universality.

Abstract:Throughout this book we have frequently encountered the concept of the atomic scattering factor and the electron scattering potential V (r) or the scaled potential U (r). In this chapter we will give a comprehensive overview of these quantities. In high-energy electron diffraction an incident electron interacts with the solid via the electrostatic Coulomb potential. To a good approximation the effects of inelastic scattering on the elastic scattering may be taken into account by representing the interaction between the incident electron and the solid by a complex potential (Yoshioka, 1957). This complex potential is usually called the optical potential (or the scattering potential as it was referred to earlier in this book), by analogy with the long-standing use of a complex refractive index often used in the description of optical properties of partially absorbing media. In an inelastic collision the incident electron loses energy while the solid is excited to a higher energy state. For high-energy electrons the probability that the inelastically scattered electron reappears in the elastic channel is very small (Rez, 1976). As far as elastic scattering is concerned, the inelastically scattered electron is ‘absorbed’, and therefore inelastic scattering is responsible for the appearance of an

Abstract:These lecture notes bridge a gap between introductory quantum field theory (QFT) courses and state-of-the-art research in scattering amplitudes. They cover the path from basic definitions of QFT to amplitudes relevant for processes in the Standard Model of particle physics. The book begins with a concise yet self-contained introduction into QFT, including perturbative quantum gravity. It then presents modern methods for calculating scattering amplitudes, focusing on tree-level amplitudes, loop-level integrands and loop-integration techniques. These methods help reveal intriguing relations between gauge and gravity amplitudes, and are of increasing importance for obtaining high-precision predictions for collider experiments, such as those at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, as well as for foundational mathematical physics studies in QFT, including recent applications to gravitational wave physics. These course-tested lecture notes include numerous exercises with detailed solutions. Requiring only minimal knowledge of QFT, they are well-suited for MSc and PhD students as a preparation for research projects in theoretical particle physics. They can be used as a one-semester graduate level course, or as a self-study guide for researchers interested in fundamental aspects of QFT. Abstract:A semiclassical transition amplitude is derived for electronically inelastic molecular collisions in the presence of an intense electromagnetic field. The calculation of this amplitude involves the integration of classical trajectories for nuclei moving on effective potential energy surfaces. These surfaces, which exhibit an avoided crossing due to the coupling through the dipole interaction around the resonance nuclear configuration, are analytically continued to their complex intersection points, where trajectories switch surfaces. Other parts of these surfaces are similar to the field-free adiabatic surfaces, where one is shifted by ħω. Metastable states, formed at some collision energies, are suggested in the field which are absent in the field-free system.

Abstract:The book contains a comprehensive account of the theory and application of neutron scattering for the study of the structure and dynamics of condensed matter. All the principal experimental techniques available at national and international neutron scattering facilities are covered. The formal theory is presented, and used to show how neutron scattering measurements give direct access to a variety of correlation and response functions which characterize the equilibrium properties of bulk matter. The determination of atomic arrangements and magnetic structures by neutron diffraction and neutron optical methods is described, including single-crystal and powder diffraction, diffuse scattering from disordered structures, total scattering, small-angle scattering, reflectometry, and imaging. The principles behind the main neutron spectroscopic techniques are explained, including continuous and time-of-flight inelastic scattering, quasielastic scattering, spin-echo spectroscopy, and Compton scattering. The scattering cross-sections for atomic vibrations in solids, diffusive motion in atomic and molecular fluids, and single-atom and cooperative magnetic excitations are calculated. A detailed account of neutron polarization analysis is given, together with examples of how polarized neutrons can be exploited to obtain information about structural and magnetic correlations which cannot be obtained by other methods. Alongside the theoretical aspects, the book also describes the essential practical information needed to perform experiments and to analyse and interpret the data. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter to consolidate and enhance understanding of the material, and a summary of relevant results from mathematics, quantum mechanics, and linear response theory, is given in the appendices.

Abstract:We review the literature on possible violations of the superposition principle for electromagnetic fields in vacuum from the earliest studies until the emergence of renormalized QED at the end of the 1940's. The exposition covers experimental work on photon-photon scattering and the propagation of light in external electromagnetic fields and relevant theoretical work on nonlinear electrodynamic theories (Born-Infeld theory and QED) until the year 1949. To enrich the picture, pieces of reminiscences from a number of (theoretical) physicists on their work in this field are collected and included or appended.

Abstract:We study the coherent scattering of weak light from a system of cooled bosonic atoms in a trap. We derive and discuss in detail the scattering equation for such a process that describes multiple scatterings from different atoms. Our theory accounts for atom-atom interactions and determines the density profile of the atomic fields from the self-consistent Bogoliubov-Hartree method. We present two kinds of analytic solutions to the scattering equation using the on-shell approximation and the generalized diffraction theory. We discuss the validity of those approaches, and demonstrate that they both lead to similar results. Our studies indicate that the scattering cross sections exhibit non-lorentzian shapes with narrow features close to resonance. Coherent scattering occurs mainly in the forward direction, and the angular distribution is limited by the size of the atomic sample in the trap. We present results for various ranges of relevant parameters such as trap size, interaction strength, number of atoms, and temperature, etc.

Abstract:This book provides a self-contained and systematic introduction to classical electron theory and its quantization, non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics. The first half of the book covers the classical theory. It discusses the well-defined Abraham model of extended charges in interaction with the electromagnetic field, and gives a study of the effective dynamics of charges under the condition that, on the scale given by the size of the charge distribution, they are far apart and the applied potentials vary slowly. The second half covers the quantum theory, leading to a coherent presentation of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics. Topics discussed include non-perturbative properties of the basic Hamiltonian, the structure of resonances, the relaxation to the ground state through emission of photons, the non-perturbative derivation of the g-factor of the electron and the stability of matter.

Abstract:This paper deals with the theory of collisions between two ultracold particles with a special focus on molecules. It describes the general features of the scattering theory of two particles with internal structure, using a time-independent quantum formalism. It starts from the Schrödinger equation and introduces the experimental observables such as the differential or integral cross sections, and rate coefficients. Using a partial-wave expansion of the scattering wavefunction, the radial motion of the collision is described through a linear system of coupled equations, which is solved numerically. Using a matching procedure of the scattering wavefunction with its asymptotic form, the observables such as cross sections and rate coefficients are obtained from the extraction of the reactance, scattering and transition matrices. The example of the collision of two dipolar molecules in the presence of an electric field is presented, showing how dipolar interactions and collisions can be controlled.

Abstract:In the past century, electron scattering has mostly served as a powerful tool to measure the microscopic structure of gases, liquids, and solids in either a static or time-resolved manner. One common basis for these works is the independent atom model, which directly relates electron scattering signals to the atomic structure of matter. In this perspective, we explore the information content of electron scattering that goes beyond the independent atom model. We show that the small-angle limit of the electron scattering signal encodes the quantum mechanical fluctuation of the long-range Coulomb potential. This quantum fluctuation, described by the second moment of the dipole operator, is the root cause of the intermolecular van der Waals forces.

Abstract:The gravitational inverse square law is microscopic approximation. I suggest that it should be modified for elementary particles to use the surface-to-surface separation of the particles rather than the center-to-center separations. For small particles at macroscopic separations, the ratio between the center-to-center distance D and the surface-to-surface distance d, D/d, approaches unity. At microscopic separations, this ratio grows very large. Here I apply this ratio to several microscopic situations and derive the nuclear coupling constants. I will then present a model of a gluon/graviton transformation to justify my surface originating modification.

Abstract:It is described how quantum field theory went from a theory for calculating the properties of stationary states, in the mold of quantum mechanics, to the scattering-focused theory we know today. This development is located as originating in the 1930s and 40s, primarily in the attempts by Werner Heisenberg and Richard Feynman to find a new theory of relativistic quantum mechanics that gets rid of the notion of state entirely. It is then shown how these attempts formed the conceptual inspiration and the provided the formal tools for the formulation of modern, scattering-based QFT in the late 1940s, in particular by Freeman Dyson (and, to some extent, by E.C.G. Stueckelberg). This transformation of quantum field theory is interpreted as a paradigm shift in a weak sense, where the foundations of the theory remain the same, while the paradigmatic problem to be calculated changes (in this case from energy levels to scattering amplitudes).

Abstract:A modified microscopic Glauber theory has been extended to investigation of the reaction and elastic differential cross sections of various projectile-target collisions at low and intermediate energies. Through a systematic study, we find that the inclusion of the finite range interaction and Coulomb modifications plays very important role in the Glauber theory to reproduce the experimental data at these energy ranges. Usually the effect of the Coulomb modification is to decrease the reaction cross sections, on the contrary that of the finite range interaction modification increases them. The angular distributions calculated by the Glauber theory including these two corrections are in good agreement with the experimental data.
