Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study periodicities in cluster algebras. Firstly, we give a proof of Restriction and Extension Theorem for cluster algebras without coefficients. Then, we show that the periodicity of a labeled seed with coefficients from an arbitrary semifield depends only on the corresponding extended exchange matrix, which implies the independence of periodicity relative to coefficients.

Abstract:We say a finite word $x$ is a palindromic periodicity if there exist two palindromes $p$ and $s$ such that $|x| \geq |ps|$ and $x$ is a prefix of the word $(ps)^\omega = pspsps\cdots$. In this paper we examine the palindromic periodicities occurring in some classical infinite words, such as Sturmian words, episturmian words, the Thue-Morse word, the period-doubling word, the Rudin-Shapiro word, the paperfolding word, and the Tribonacci word, and prove a number of results about them. We also prove results about words with the smallest number of palindromic periodicities.

Maximal number of subword occurrences in a word

Abstract:We consider the number of occurrences of subwords (non-consecutive sub-sequences) in a given word. We first define the notion of subword entropy of a given word that measures the maximal number of occurrences among all possible subwords. We then give upper and lower bounds of minimal subword entropy for words of fixed length in a fixed alphabet, and also showing that minimal subword entropy per letter has a limit value. A better upper bound of minimal subword entropy for a binary alphabet is then given by looking at certain families of periodic words. We also give some conjectures based on experimental observations

Palindromic length of infinite aperiodic words

Abstract:The palindromic length of the finite word $v$ is equal to the minimal number of palindromes whose concatenation is equal to $v$. It was conjectured in 2013 that for every aperiodic infinite word $x$, the palindromic length of its factors is not bounded. We prove this conjecture to be true.

Abstract:We classify the sum-free subsets of ${\mathbb F}_3^n$ whose density exceeds $\frac16$. This yields a resolution of Vsevolod Lev's periodicity conjecture, which asserts that if a sum-free subset ${A\subseteq {\mathbb F}_3^n}$ is maximal with respect to inclusion and aperiodic (in the sense that there is no non-zero vector $v$ satisfying $A+v=A$), then $|A|\le \frac12(3^{n-1}+1)$ -- a bound known to be optimal if $n\ne 2$, while for $n=2$ there are no such sets.

A Connection Between Unbordered Partial Words and Sparse Rulers

Abstract:$\textit{Partial words}$ are words that contain, in addition to letters, special symbols $\diamondsuit$ called $\textit{holes}$. Two partial words of $a=a_0 \dots a_n$ and $b=b_0 \dots b_n$ are $\textit{compatible}$ if for all $i$, $a_i = b_i$ or at least one of $a_i, b_i$ is a hole. A partial word is $\textit{unbordered}$ if it does not have a nonempty proper prefix and a suffix that are compatible. Otherwise the partial word is $\textit{bordered}$. A set $R \subseteq \{0, \dots, n\}$ is called a $\textit{complete sparse ruler of length $n$}$ if for all $k \in \{0, \dots, n\}$ there exists $r, s \in R$ such that $k = r - s$. These are also known as $\textit{restricted difference bases}$. From the definitions it follows that the more holes a partial word has, the more likely it is to be bordered. By introducing a connection between unbordered partial words and sparse rulers, we improve bounds on the maximum number of holes an unbordered partial word can have over alphabets of sizes $4$ or greater. We also provide a counterexample for a previously reported theorem. We then study a two-dimensional generalization of these results. We adapt methods from one-dimensional case to solve the correct asymptotic for the number of holes an unbordered two-dimensional binary partial word can have. This generalization might invoke further research questions.

Abstract:Let u be a finite word and r be a positive integer, a power is a word of the form uu...u}rtimes . Particularly, a square is a word of the form uu . Fraenkel and Simpson conjectured in 1998 that the number of distinct squares in a word is bounded by its length. This conjecture was proved recently by Brlek and Li. Besides, a stronger upper bound for binary words was conjectured by Jonoska, Manea and Seki by stating that, for a word of length n over the alphabet {a,b} , if k is the least of the number of a's and the number of b's and k≥2 , then the number of distinct squares is upper bounded by 2k−12k+2n . In this article, we prove this conjecture by giving a stronger statement on the number of distinct powers in a binary word.

Abstract:In this document we achieve exact and asymptotic enumeration of words, compositions over a finite group, and/or integer compositions characterized by local restrictions and, separately, subsequence pattern avoidance. We also count cyclically restricted and circular objects. This either fills gaps in the current literature by e.g. considering particular new patterns, or involves general progress, notably with locally restricted compositions over a finite group. We associate these compositions to walks on a covering graph whose structure is exploited to simplify asymptotic expressions. Specifically, we show that under certain conditions the number of locally restricted compositions of a group element is asymptotically independent of the group element. For some problems our results extend to the case of a positive number of subword pattern occurrences (instead of zero for pattern avoidance) or convergence in distribution of the normalized number of occurrences. We typically apply the more general propositions to concrete examples such as the familiar Carlitz compositions or simple subword patterns.

This functional is identical in law to the spectrum of a random matrix. The Poissonized word problem is also briefy studied, and the asymptotic behavior of the shape analyzed.

Abstract:An infinite word has the property Rm if every factor has exactly m return words. Vuillon showed that R2 characterizes Sturmian words. We prove that a word satisfies Rm if its complexity function is (m − 1)n + 1 and if it contains no weak bispecial factor. These conditions are necessary for m = 3, whereas for m = 4 the complexity function need not be 3n + 1. A new class of words satisfying Rm is given.

Counting $r\times s$ rectangles in nondecreasing and Smirnov words

Abstract:The rectangle capacity, a word statistic that was recently introduced by the author and Mansour, counts, for two fixed positive integers $r$ and $s$, the number of occurrences of a rectangle of size $r\times s$ in the bargraph representation of a word. In this work we find the bivariate generating function for the distribution on nondecreasing words of the number of $r\times s$ rectangles and the generating function for their total number over all nondecreasing words. We also obtain the analog results for Smirnov words, which are words that have no consecutive equal letters. This complements our recent results concerned with general words (i.e., not restricted) and Catalan words.

On the minimum density of monotone subwords

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic minimum density $f(s,k)$ of monotone $k$-subwords of words over a totally ordered alphabet of size $s$. The unrestricted alphabet case, $f(\infty,k)$, is well-studied, known for $f(\infty,3)$ and $f(\infty,4)$, and, in particular, conjectured to be rational for all $k$. Here we determine $f(2,k)$ for all $k$ and determine $f(3,3)$, which is already irrational. We describe an explicit construction for all $s$ which is conjectured to yield $f(s,3)$. Using our construction and flag algebra, we determine $f(4,3),f(5,3),f(6,3)$ up to $10^{-3}$ yet argue that flag algebra, regardless of computational power, cannot determine $f(5,3)$ precisely. Finally, we prove that for every fixed $k \ge 3$, the gap between $f(s,k)$ and $f(\infty,k)$ is $\Theta(\frac{1}{s})$.

Abstract:The $\ell$-Rauzy graph of order $k$ for any infinite word is a directed graph in which an arc $(v_1,v_2)$ is formed if the concatenation of the word $v_1$ and the suffix of $v_2$ of length $k-\ell$ is a subword of the infinite word. In this paper, we consider one of the important aperiodic recurrent words, the infinite Fibonacci word for discussion. We prove a few basic properties of the $\ell$-Rauzy graph of the infinite Fibonacci word. We also prove that the $\ell$-Rauzy graphs for the infinite Fibonacci word are strongly connected.

Abstract:We consider the following open question in the spirit of Ramsey theory: Given an aperiodic infinite word $w$, does there exist a finite coloring of its factors such that no factorization of $w$ is monochromatic? We show that such a coloring always exists whenever $w$ is a Sturmian word or a standard episturmian word.

Lower Bounds for Synchronizing Word Lengths in Partial Automata

Abstract:It was conjectured by Černý in 1964, that a synchronizing DFA on $n$ states always has a synchronizing word of length at most $(n-1)^2$, and he gave a sequence of DFAs for which this bound is reached. Until now a full analysis of all DFAs reaching this bound was only given for $n \leq 5$, and with bounds on the number of symbols for $n \leq 12$. Here we give the full analysis for $n \leq 7$, without bounds on the number of symbols. For PFAs (partial automata) on $\leq 7$ states we do a similar analysis as for DFAs and find the maximal shortest synchronizing word lengths, exceeding $(n-1)^2$ for $n \geq 4$. Where DFAs with long synchronization typically have very few symbols, for PFAs we observe that more symbols may increase the synchronizing word length. For PFAs on $\leq 10$ states and two symbols we investigate all occurring synchronizing word lengths. We give series of PFAs on two and three symbols, reaching the maximal possible length for some small values of $n$. For $n=6,7,8,9$, the construction on two symbols is the unique one reaching the maximal length. For both series the growth is faster than $(n-1)^2$, although still quadratic. Based on string rewriting, for arbitrary size we construct a PFA on three symbols with exponential shortest synchronizing word length, giving significantly better bounds than earlier exponential constructions. We give a transformation of this PFA to a PFA on two symbols keeping exponential shortest synchronizing word length, yielding a better bound than applying a similar known transformation. Both PFAs are transitive. Finally, we show that exponential lengths are even possible with just one single undefined transition, again with transitive constructions.

Abstract:If $u$ and $v$ are two words, the correlation of $u$ over $v$ is a binary word that encodes all possible overlaps between $u$ and $v$. This concept was introduced by Guibas and Odlyzko as a key element of their method for enumerating the number of words of length $n$ over a given alphabet that avoid a given set of forbidden factors. In this paper we characterize the pairwise correlations between the minimal forbidden factors of the infinite Fibonacci word.

The periodic structure of local consistency

Abstract:We connect the mixing behaviour of random walks over a graph to the power of the local-consistency algorithm for the solution of the corresponding constraint satisfaction problem (CSP). We extend this connection to arbitrary CSPs and their promise variant. In this way, we establish a linear-level (and, thus, optimal) lower bound against the local-consistency algorithm applied to the class of aperiodic promise CSPs. The proof is based on a combination of the probabilistic method for random Erdős-Rényi hypergraphs and a structural result on the number of fibers (i.e., long chains of hyperedges) in sparse hypergraphs of large girth. As a corollary, we completely classify the power of local consistency for the approximate graph homomorphism problem by establishing that, in the nontrivial cases, the problem has linear width.
