Abstract:In this short article, we study factor colorings of aperiodic linearly recurrent infinite words. We show that there always exists a coloring which does not admit a monochromatic factorization of the word into factors of increasing lengths.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider infinite words that arise as fixed points of primitive substitutions on a finite alphabet and finite colorings of their factors. Any such infinite word exhibits a "hierarchal structure" that will allow us to define, under the additional condition of strong recognizability, certain remarkable finite colorings of its factors. In particular, we generalize two combinatorial results by Justin and Pirillo concerning arbitrarily large monochromatic $k$-powers occurring in infinite words, in view of a recent paper by de Luca, Pribavkina and Zamboni, we will give new examples of classes of infinite words $\mathbf{u}$ and finite colorings that do not allow infinite monochromatic factorizations $\mathbf{u}=\mathbf{u}_1\mathbf{u}_2\mathbf{u}_3\ldots$.

Abstract:We consider the following open question in the spirit of Ramsey theory: Given an aperiodic infinite word $w$, does there exist a finite coloring of its factors such that no factorization of $w$ is monochromatic? We show that such a coloring always exists whenever $w$ is a Sturmian word or a standard episturmian word.

Abstract:Partial words are sequences over a finite alphabet that may contain wildcard symbols, called holes, which match or are compatible with all letters; partial words without holes are said to be full words (or simply words). Given an infinite partial word w, the number of distinct full words over the alphabet that are compatible with factors of w of length n, called subwords of w, refers to a measure of complexity of infinite partial words so-called subword complexity. This measure is of particular interest because we can construct partial words with subword complexities not achievable by full words. In this paper, we consider the notion of recurrence over infinite partial words, that is, we study whether all of the finite subwords of a given infinite partial word appear infinitely often, and we establish connections between subword complexity and recurrence in this more general framework.

Abstract:We prove that proper coloring distinguishes between block factors and finitely dependent stationary processes. A stochastic process is finitely dependent if variables at sufficiently well-separated locations are independent; it is a block factor if it can be expressed as an equivariant finite-range function of independent variables. The problem of finding non-block-factor finitely dependent processes dates back to 1965. The first published example appeared in 1993, and we provide arguably the first natural examples. Schramm proved in 2008 that no stationary 1-dependent 3-coloring of the integers exists, and asked whether a $k$ -dependent $q$ -coloring exists for any $k$ and $q$ . We give a complete answer by constructing a 1-dependent 4-coloring and a 2-dependent 3-coloring. Our construction is canonical and natural, yet very different from all previous schemes. In its pure form it yields precisely the two finitely dependent colorings mentioned above, and no others. The processes provide unexpected connections between extremal cases of the Lovász local lemma and descent and peak sets of random permutations. Neither coloring can be expressed as a block factor, nor as a function of a finite-state Markov chain; indeed, no stationary finitely dependent coloring can be so expressed. We deduce extensions involving $d$ dimensions and shifts of finite type; in fact, any nondegenerate shift of finite type also distinguishes between block factors and finitely dependent processes.

Abstract:While finite automata have minimal DFAs as a simple and natural normal form, deterministic omega-automata do not currently have anything similar. One reason for this is that a normal form for omega-regular languages has to speak about more than acceptance - for example, to have a normal form for a parity language, it should relate every infinite word to some natural color for this language. This raises the question of whether or not a concept such as a natural color of an infinite word (for a given language) exists, and, if it does, how it relates back to automata. We define the natural color of a word purely based on an omega-regular language, and show how this natural color can be traced back from any deterministic parity automaton after two cheap and simple automaton transformations. The resulting streamlined automaton does not necessarily accept every word with its natural color, but it has a 'co-run', which is like a run, but can once move to a language equivalent state, whose color is the natural color, and no co-run with a higher color exists. The streamlined automaton defines, for every color c, a good-for-games co-Büchi automaton that recognizes the words whose natural colors w.r.t. the represented language are at least c. This provides a canonical representation for every $\omega$-regular language, because good-for-games co-Büchi automata have a canonical minimal (and cheap to obtain) representation for every co-Büchi language.

Abstract:Quasi-Sturmian words, which are infinite words with factor complexity eventually $n+c$ share many properties with Sturmian words. In this paper, we study the quasi-Sturmian colorings on regular trees. There are two different types, bounded and unbounded, of quasi-Sturmian colorings. We obtain an induction algorithm similar to Sturmian colorings. We distinguish them by the recurrence function.

Abstract:Given an infinite word, enumerating its factors is an important exercise for understanding the structure of the word. The process of finding all the factors is quite tricky for two-dimensional words. In this paper, two possible ways of enumerating the factors of the fixed point ($f_{\infty,\infty}$) of the sequence of Fibonacci arrays and a method for locating these factors in $f_{\infty,\infty}$ are explored. In addition, the factor complexity and the locations of the factors of the fixed point of Fibonacci sequence of arrays are also analysed.

Abstract:The palindromic length of the finite word $v$ is equal to the minimal number of palindromes whose concatenation is equal to $v$. It was conjectured in 2013 that for every infinite aperiodic word $x$, the palindromic length of its factors is not bounded. We prove this conjecture to be true.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the maximal pattern complexity of infinite words up to Abelian equivalence. We compute a lower bound for the Abelian maximal pattern complexity of infinite words which are both recurrent and aperiodic by projection. We show that in the case of binary words, the bound is actually achieved and gives a characterization of recurrent aperiodic words.

Abstract:Motivated by applications to string processing, we introduce variants of the Lyndon factorization called inverse Lyndon factorizations. Their factors, named inverse Lyndon words, are in a class that strictly contains anti-Lyndon words, that is Lyndon words with respect to the inverse lexicographic order. The Lyndon factorization of a nonempty word w is unique but w may have several inverse Lyndon factorizations. We prove that any nonempty word w admits a canonical inverse Lyndon factorization, named ICFL ( w ) , that maintains the main properties of the Lyndon factorization of w: it can be computed in linear time, it is uniquely determined, and it preserves a compatibility property for sorting suffixes. In particular, the compatibility property of ICFL ( w ) is a consequence of another result: any factor in ICFL ( w ) is a concatenation of consecutive factors of the Lyndon factorization of w with respect to the inverse lexicographic order.

Abstract:A closed word (a.k.a. periodic-like word or complete first return) is a word whose longest border does not have internal occurrences, or, equivalently, whose longest repeated prefix is not right special. We investigate the structure of closed factors of words. We show that a word of length $n$ contains at least $n+1$ distinct closed factors, and characterize those words having exactly $n+1$ closed factors. Furthermore, we show that a word of length $n$ can contain $\Theta(n^{2})$ many distinct closed factors.

Abstract:Motivated by a conjecture of Frid, Puzynina, and Zamboni, we investigate infinite words with the property that for infinitely many n, every length-n factor is a product of two palindromes. We show that every Sturmian word has this property, but this does not characterize the class of Sturmian words. We also show that the Thue-Morse word does not have this property. We investigate finite words with the maximal number of distinct palindrome pair factors and characterize the binary words that are not palindrome pairs but have the property that every proper factor is a palindrome pair.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the notion of Lyndon word to transfinite words. We prove two main results. We first show that, given a transfinite word, there exists a unique factorization in Lyndon words that are densely non-increasing, a relaxation of the condition used in the case of finite words. In the annex, we prove that the factorization of a rational word has a special form and that it can be computed from a rational expression describing the word.

Abstract:An alternating colouring function is defined on strings over the alphabet $\{0, 1\}$. It divides the strings in colourable and non-colourable ones. The points in the subshift of finite type defined by forbidding all non-colourable strings of a certain length alternate between states of one colour and states of the other colour. In other words, the points in the 2nd power shifts all have the same colour. The number $K_n$ of non-colourable strings of length $n \ge 2$ is shown to be $2 \cdot (J_{n-2} + 1)$ where $J$ is the sequence of Jacobsthal numbers. The number of sources and sinks in the de Bruijn graph of dimension $n \ge 3$ with non-colourable edges removed is shown each to be $K_n - 4$.

Abstract:The $\ell$-Rauzy graph of order $k$ for any infinite word is a directed graph in which an arc $(v_1,v_2)$ is formed if the concatenation of the word $v_1$ and the suffix of $v_2$ of length $k-\ell$ is a subword of the infinite word. In this paper, we consider one of the important aperiodic recurrent words, the infinite Fibonacci word for discussion. We prove a few basic properties of the $\ell$-Rauzy graph of the infinite Fibonacci word. We also prove that the $\ell$-Rauzy graphs for the infinite Fibonacci word are strongly connected.

Abstract:We study the number of monochromatic solutions to linear equations in a $2$-coloring of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We show that any nontrivial linear equation has a constant fraction of solutions that are monochromatic in any $2$-coloring of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. We further study commonness of four-term equations and disprove a conjecture of Costello and Elvin by showing that, unlike over $\mathbb{F}_p$, the four-term equation $x_1 + 2x_2 - x_3 - 2x_4 = 0$ is uncommon over $\{1,\ldots,n\}$.
