A main result in this paper is that the visibility relation $v$ is equivalent to Wallman proximity. Abstract:Boundary recovery is one of the main obstacles in applying the Delaunay criterion to mesh generation. A standard resolution is to add Steiner points directly at the intersection positions between missing boundaries and triangulations. We redesign the algorithm with the aid of some new concepts, data structures and operations, which make its implementation routine. Furthermore, all possible intersection cases and their solutions are presented, some of which are seldom discussed in the literature. Finally, numerical results are presented to evaluate the performance of the new algorithm.

Abstract:The Delaunay triangulation of a set of points P on a hyperbolic surface is the projection of the Delaunay triangulation of the set of lifted points in the hyperbolic plane. Since is infinite, the algorithms to compute Delaunay triangulations in the plane do not generalize naturally. Using a Dirichlet domain, we exhibit a finite set of points that captures the full triangulation. We prove that an edge of a Delaunay triangulation has a combinatorial length (a notion we define in the paper) smaller than with respect to a Dirichlet domain. To achieve this, we introduce new tools, of intrinsic interest, that capture the properties of length-minimizing curves in the context of closed curves. We then use these to derive structural results on Delaunay triangulations and exhibit certain distance minimizing properties of both the edges of a Delaunay triangulation and of a Dirichlet domain. The bounds produced in this paper depend only on the topology of the surface. They provide mathematical foundations for hyperbolic analogs of the algorithms to compute periodic Delaunay triangulations in Euclidean space.

Abstract:We present a self-contained short proof of the seminal result of Dillencourt (SoCG 1987 and DCG 1990) that Delaunay triangulations, of planar point sets in general position, are 1-tough. An important implication of this result is that Delaunay triangulations have perfect matchings. Another implication of our result is a proof of the conjecture of Aichholzer et al. (2010) that at least $n$ points are required to block any $n$-vertex Delaunay triangulation

Abstract:The Delaunay triangulation of a planar point set is a fundamental construct in computational geometry. A simple algorithm to generate it is based on flips of diagonal edges in convex quads. We characterize the effect of a single edge flip in a triangulation on the geometric Laplacian of the triangulation, which leads to a simpler and shorter proof of a theorem of Rippa that the Dirichlet energy of any piecewise-linear scalar function on a triangulation obtains its minimum on the Delaunay triangulation. Using Rippa's theorem, we provide a spectral characterization of the Delaunay triangulation, namely that the spectrum of the geometric Laplacian is minimized on this triangulation. This spectral theorem then leads to a simpler proof of a theorem of Musin that the harmonic index also obtains its minimum on the Delaunay triangulation.

Abstract:We aim to give a strict proof of the existence and uniqueness of the weighted Voronoi decomposition and the dual weighted Delaunay triangulation on Euclidean and hyperbolic polyhedral surface as well as hyperbolic surface with geodesic boundaries. Since the former definition of the Voronoi cell may not be simply connected, we slightly adjust the definition. Our proof is to construct an isotopic map instead of using the edge-flipping algorithm, which is a generalization of the one by Dyer et al. The main theorem of this paper is a lemma for proving the existence of the inversive distance circle packing.

Abstract:Amongst the flourishing Delaunay Triangulation methods, growth algorithm has been widely accepted because of its reputation of being simple and elegant. However, the parallelization of growth algorithm has not been fully exploited. In this work, a novel Growth algorithm of Delaunay Triangulation is proposed. The point cloud is first divided into two parts by a suitable curve and the separated areas are calculated by incremental algorithm. Triangles which cross with the curve are generated by a growth algorithm associated with uniform grid. At the process of merging, these grew triangles are used to detect incorrect triangles of the incremental algorithm areas. Method about generating triangles on curve is elaborated and a simple way to detect interferential triangles is also explained. With above method, triangulation calculation can be parallelized. Unlike the traditional divide-and-conquer method, no flip operation is needed in the proposed methodology. Thus, three dimensional applications are also made possible. A comparative research between tradition incremental algorithm and the proposed method has been conducted. Results show, the algorithm has a higher performance with less computation time.

Abstract:This article presents the formal proof of correctness for a plane Delaunay triangulation algorithm. It consists in repeating a sequence of edge flippings from an initial triangulation until the Delaunay property is achieved. To describe triangulations, we rely on a combinatorial hypermap specification framework we have been developing for years. We embed hypermaps in the plane by attaching coordinates to elements in a consistent way. We then describe what are legal and illegal Delaunay edges and a flipping operation which we show preserves hypermap, triangulation, and embedding invariants. To prove the termination of the algorithm, we use a generic approach expressing that any non-cyclic relation is well-founded when working on a finite set.

Abstract:Delaunay has shown that the Delaunay complex of a finite set of points $P$ of Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^m$ triangulates the convex hull of $P$, provided that $P$ satisfies a mild genericity property. Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay complexes can be defined for arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. However, Delaunay's genericity assumption no longer guarantees that the Delaunay complex will yield a triangulation; stronger assumptions on $P$ are required. A natural one is to assume that $P$ is sufficiently dense. Although results in this direction have been claimed, we show that sample density alone is insufficient to ensure that the Delaunay complex triangulates a manifold of dimension greater than 2.

Abstract:We give an expected-case analysis of Delaunay triangulations. To avoid edge effects we consider a unit-intensity Poisson process in Euclidean d-space, and then limit attention to the portion of the triangulation within a cube of side n 1/d . For d equal to two, we calculate the expected maximum edge length, the expected minimum and maximum angles, and the average aspect ratio of a triangle. We also show that in any fixed dimension the expected maximum vertex degree is Θ( log n/ log log n). Altogether our results provide some measure of the suitability of the Delaunay triangulation for certain applications, such as interpolation and mesh generation.

Abstract:We proved a rigidity result for Delaunay triangulations of the plane under Luo's discrete conformal change, extending previous results on hexagonal triangulations. Our result is a discrete analogue of the conformal rigidity of the plane. We followed Zhengxu He's analytical approach in his work on the rigidity of disk patterns, and developed a discrete Schwarz lemma and a discrete Liouville theorem. The main tools include conformal modulus, discrete extremal length, and maximum principles in discrete conformal geometry.

Abstract:Delaunay triangulation and Voronoi diagram are widely used in computer graphics, computational geometry and other fields. Different from the planar case, Delaunay triangulation of a point set on smooth 2-manifolds does not always exist. In this paper we propose a new sampling requirement combining the maximal curvature, injectivity radius and convexity radius to guarantee the existence of Delaunay triangulation on 2-manifolds. After introducing the primal/dual efficient representation (PDER) structure [26], we develop a generalized PDER which not only represents Delaunay/Voronoi dual simply and efficiently, but also describes the surfaces with boundaries. Taking advantage of several operators for modeling and updating models, we employ generalized PDER to construct and operate Delaunay/Voronoi dual dynamically on smooth 2-manifolds. The generalized PDER is also a powerful tool for dual subdivision schemes. Many examples demonstrate the feasibility of our method and the generalized PDER.

Abstract:We describe an algorithm to construct an intrinsic Delaunay triangulation of a smooth closed submanifold of Euclidean space. Using results established in a companion paper on the stability of Delaunay triangulations on $\delta$-generic point sets, we establish sampling criteria which ensure that the intrinsic Delaunay complex coincides with the restricted Delaunay complex and also with the recently introduced tangential Delaunay complex. The algorithm generates a point set that meets the required criteria while the tangential complex is being constructed. In this way the computation of geodesic distances is avoided, the runtime is only linearly dependent on the ambient dimension, and the Delaunay complexes are guaranteed to be triangulations of the manifold.

Abstract:Delaunay triangulation is an effective way to build a triangulation of a cloud of points, i.e., a partitioning of the points into simplices (triangles in 2D, tetrahedra in 3D, and so on), such that no two simplices overlap and every point in the set is a vertex of at least one simplex. Such a triangulation has been shown to have several interesting properties in terms of the structure of the simplices it constructs (e.g., maximising the minimum angle of the triangles in the bi-dimensional case) and has several critical applications in the contexts of computer graphics, computational geometry, mobile robotics or indoor localisation, to name a few application domains. This review paper revolves around three main pillars: (I) algorithms, (II) implementations over central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and (III) applications. Specifically, the paper provides a comprehensive review of the main state-of-the-art algorithmic approaches to compute the Delaunay Triangulation. Subsequently, it delivers a critical review of implementations of Delaunay triangulation over CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. Finally, the paper covers a broad and multi-disciplinary range of possible applications of this technique.

Abstract:The paper proves a result on the convergence of discrete conformal maps to the Riemann mappings for Jordan domains. It is a counterpart of Rodin-Sullivan's theorem on convergence of circle packing mappings to the Riemann mapping in the new setting of discrete conformality. The proof follows the same strategy that Rodin-Sullivan used by establishing a rigidity result for regular hexagonal triangulations of the plane and estimating the quasiconformal constants associated to the discrete conformal maps.

Abstract:Meshes composed of well-centered simplices have nice orthogonal dual meshes (the dual Voronoi diagram). This is useful for certain numerical algorithms that prefer such primal-dual mesh pairs. We prove that well-centered meshes also have optimality properties and relationships to Delaunay and minmax angle triangulations. We present an iterative algorithm that seeks to transform a given triangulation in two or three dimensions into a well-centered one by minimizing a cost function and moving the interior vertices while keeping the mesh connectivity and boundary vertices fixed. The cost function is a direct result of a new characterization of well-centeredness in arbitrary dimensions that we present. Ours is the first optimization-based heuristic for well-centeredness, and the first one that applies in both two and three dimensions. We show the results of applying our algorithm to small and large two-dimensional meshes, some with a complex boundary, and obtain a well-centered tetrahedralization of the cube. We also show numerical evidence that our algorithm preserves gradation and that it improves the maximum and minimum angles of acute triangulations created by the best known previous method.

Constructing Intrinsic Delaunay Triangulations from the Dual of Geodesic Voronoi Diagrams

Abstract:Intrinsic Delaunay triangulation (IDT) is a fundamental data structure in computational geometry and computer graphics. However, except for some theoretical results, such as existence and uniqueness, little progress has been made towards computing IDT on simplicial surfaces. To date the only way for constructing IDTs is the edge-flipping algorithm, which iteratively flips the non-Delaunay edge to be locally Delaunay. Although the algorithm is conceptually simple and guarantees to stop in finite steps, it has no known time complexity. Moreover, the edge-flipping algorithm may produce non-regular triangulations, which contain self-loops and/or faces with only two edges. In this paper, we propose a new method for constructing IDT on manifold triangle meshes. Based on the duality of geodesic Voronoi diagrams, our method can guarantee the resultant IDTs are regular. Our method has a theoretical worst-case time complexity $O(n^2\log n)$ for a mesh with $n$ vertices. We observe that most real-world models are far from their Delaunay triangulations, thus, the edge-flipping algorithm takes many iterations to fix the non-Delaunay edges. In contrast, our method is non-iterative and insensitive to the number of non-Delaunay edges. Empirically, it runs in linear time $O(n)$ on real-world models.
