Abstract:We introduce a procedure for constructing a generalized elliptic curve from a genus-one twisted curve, and we use this procedure to define an explicit, modular isomorphism between two compactifications of moduli stacks of elliptic curves with level structure.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:Witten's gauged linear sigma model [Wi1] is one of the universal frameworks or structures that lie behind stringy dualities. Its A-twisted moduli space at genus 0 case has been used in the Mirror Principle [L-L-Y] that relates Gromov-Witten invariants and mirror symmetry computations. In this paper the A-twisted moduli stack for higher genus curves is defined and systematically studied. It is proved that such a moduli stack is an Artin stack. For genus 0, it has the A-twisted moduli space of [M-P] as the coarse moduli space. The detailed proof of the regularity of the collapsing morphism by Jun Li in [L-L-Y: I and II] can be viewed as a natural morphism from the moduli stack of genus 0 stable maps to the A-twisted moduli stack at genus 0. Due to the technical demand of stacks to physicists and the conceptual demand of supersymmetry to mathematicians, a brief introduction of each topic that is most relevant to the main contents of this paper is given in the beginning and the appendix respectively. Themes for further study are listed in the end.

Abstract:We provide an account of the construction of the moduli stack of elliptic curves as an analytic orbifold. While intimately linked to Thurston's point of view on the subject (discrete groups acting properly and effectively on differentiable manifolds), the construction of the modular orbi-curve and its universal family of elliptic curves ends up requiring a bit more technology, in order to allow for non-effective actions. The paper is entirely expository and makes no claims to originality: its main goal is to be self-contained enough in order to be useful to young researchers who are entering the field and are interested in the interactions between differential and algebraic geometry.

Abstract:Let be a smooth geometrically connected projective curve over the field of fractions of a discrete valuation ring , and a modulus on , given by a closed subscheme of which is geometrically reduced. The generalized Jacobian of with respect to is then an extension of the Jacobian of by a torus. We describe its Néron model, together with the character and component groups of the special fibre, in terms of a regular model of over . This generalizes Raynaud's well-known description for the usual Jacobian. We also give some computations for generalized Jacobians of modular curves with moduli supported on the cusps.

Minimal torsion curves in geometric isogeny classes

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the study of minimal torsion curves within a fixed geometric isogeny class. For a $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isogeny class $\mathcal{E}$ of elliptic curves and $N \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, we wish to determine the least degree of a point on the modular curve $X_1(N)$ associated to any $E \in \mathcal{E}$. In the present work, we consider the cases where $\mathcal{E}$ is rational, i.e., contains an elliptic curve with rational $j$-invariant, or where $\mathcal{E}$ consists of elliptic curves with complex multiplication (CM). If $N=\ell^k$ is a power of a single prime, we give a complete characterization upon restricting to points of odd degree, and also in the case where $\mathcal{E}$ is CM. We include various partial results in the more general setting.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field with $q$ elements. For $a,b,c,d,e,f \in \mathbb{F}_q^{\times}$, denote by $C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}$ the family of algebraic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$ given by the affine equation \begin{align*} C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}:ay^2+bx^2+cxy=d+ex^2y^2+fx^3y. \end{align*} The family of generalized twisted Edwards curves is a subfamily of $C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}$. Let $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ denote the number of points on $C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this article, we find certain expressions for $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ when $af=ce$. If $c^2-4ab\neq 0$, we express $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ in terms of a $p$-adic hypergeometric function $\mathbb{G}(x)$ whose values are explicitly known for all $x\in \mathbb{F}_q$. Next, if $c^2-4ab=0$, we express $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ in terms of another $p$-adic hypergeometric function and then relate it to the traces of Frobenius endomorphisms of a family of elliptic curves. Furthermore, using the known values of the hypergeometric functions, we deduce some nice formulas for $\#C_{a,b,c,d,e,f}(\mathbb{F}_q)$.

Modular curves $X_1(n)$ as moduli spaces of point arrangements and applications

Abstract:For a complex elliptic curve $E$ and a point $p$ of order $n$ on it, the images of the points $p_k=kp$ under the Weierstrass embedding of $E$ into $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$ are collinear if and only if the sum of indices is divisible by $n$. Thus, it provides a realization of a certain matroid. We study this matroid in detail and prove that its realization space is isomorphic (over $\mathbb{C}$) to the modular curve $X_1(n)$, provided $n\geq 10$, which also provides an integral model of $X_1(n)$. In the process, we find a connection to the classical Ceva and Böröczky examples of special point and line configurations. We also discuss the situation for smaller values of $n$.

Abstract:We study the twisted elliptic genera of 2d (0 , 4) SCFTs associated with the BPS strings in the twisted circle compactification of 6d rank-one (1 , 0) SCFTs. Such objects can arise when the 6d gauge algebra allows outer automorphism, thus are classified by twisted affine Lie algebras. We study several fascinating aspects of the twisted elliptic genera including 2d localization, twisted elliptic blowup equations, Higgsing and spectral flow symmetry. We derive a recursion formula with respect to the number of strings to exactly compute the twisted elliptic genera. We also investigate the modular bootstrap of twisted one-string elliptic genera and find the modularity of congruence subgroups Γ 1 ( N ) naturally appears with possible N = 2 , 3 , 4. Geometrically, our study solves the refined BPS partition functions of the underlying genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds with N -section.

Abstract:Modular polynomials are an important tool in many algorithms involving elliptic curves. In this article we investigate their generalization to the genus 2 case following pioneering work by Gaudry and Dupont. We prove various properties of these genus 2 modular polynomials and give an improved way to explicitly compute them.

Abstract:In the present paper, we generalize the celebrated classical lemma of Birch and Heegner on quadratic twists of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove the existence of explicit infinite families of quadratic twists with analytic ranks $0$ and $1$ for a large class of elliptic curves, and use Heegner points to explicitly construct rational points of infinite order on the twists of rank $1$. In addition, we show that these families of quadratic twists satisfy the $2$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture when the original curve does. We also prove a new result in the direction of the Goldfeld conjecture.

Abstract:Given a smooth scheme X with an action by an affine algebraic group G, we give a formula to compute the Nisnevich sheaf of the motivic connected components of the quotient stack [X/G] in the case of an orbifold. We apply it to identify all the $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected stacky curves and prove the $\mathbb{A}^1$ -connectedness of the moduli stack of elliptic curves. We also prove homotopy purity for the smooth algebraic stacks and recover a computation of the Picard group of stacky orbifold curves by computing their mixed motive.

Abstract:We describe an algebra of meromorphic functions on the Siegel domain of genus two which contains Siegel modular forms for an arithmetic index six subgroup of the symplectic group, which is closed under three canonical derivations of the Siegel domain. The main ingredients of our study are the moduli of enhanced genus two curves, Gauss-Manin connection and the modular vector fields living on such moduli spaces.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order in the imaginary quadratic field $K$. For positive integers $M \mid N$, we determine the least degree of an $\mathcal{O}$-CM point on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/K(\zeta_M)}$ and also on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_M)}$: that is, we treat both the case in which the complex multiplication is rationally defined and the case in which we do not assume that the complex multiplication is rationally defined. To prove these results we establish several new theorems on rational cyclic isogenies of CM elliptic curves. In particular, we extend a result of Kwon that determines the set of positive integers $N$ for which there is an $\mathcal{O}$-CM elliptic curve $E$ admitting a cyclic, $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$-rational $N$-isogeny.

A stratification of moduli of arbitrarily singular curves

Abstract:We introduce a new moduli stack $\mathscr{E}_{g,n}$ of ``equinormalized curves" which is a minor modification of the moduli space of all reduced, connected curves. We construct a stratification $\bigsqcup_\Gamma \mathscr{E}_\Gamma$ of $\mathscr{E}_{g,n}$ indexed by generalized dual graphs and prove that each stratum $\mathscr{E}_{\Gamma}$ is a fiber bundle over a finite quotient of a product of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$'s. The fibers are moduli schemes parametrizing subalgebras of a fixed algebra, and are in principle explicitly computable as locally closed subschemes of products of Grassmannians. We thus obtain a remarkably explicit geometric description of moduli of reduced curves with arbitrary singularities.

A generalized spectral correspondence

Abstract:We establish a strong categorical correspondence between isomorphism classes of sheaves of arbitrary rank on one algebraic curve and twisted pairs on another algebraic curve. In a particular application, we realize a generic elliptic curve as a spectral cover of the complex projective line $\mathbb{P}^1$ and then construct examples of semistable co-Higgs bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ as pushforwards of locally-free sheaves of certain small ranks over the elliptic curve. By appealing to a composite push-pull projection formula, we conjecture an iterated version of the spectral correspondence. We prove this conjecture for a particular class of spectral covers of $\mathbb {P}^1$. The proof relies upon a classification of Galois groups into primitive and imprimitive types. In this context, we revisit a century-old theorem of J.F. Ritt.

Algebraic identities between families of (elliptic) modular graphs

Abstract:Consider an algebraic identity between elliptic modular graphs where several vertices are at fixed locations (and hence unintegrated) while the others are integrated over the toroidal worldsheet. At any unintegrated vertex, we can glue an arbitrary expression involving elliptic modular graphs which has the same unintegrated vertex. Integrating over that vertex, we obtain new algebraic identities between elliptic modular graphs. Hence this elementary process of convoluting the original "seed" identity with other graphs yields infinite number of new identities. We consider various seed identities in which two of the vertices are unintegrated. Convoluting them with families of elliptic modular graphs, we obtain new identities. Each identity is parametrized by an arbitrary number of links in the graphs as well as the positions of unintegrated vertices. On identifying the unintegrated vertices, this leads to an algebraic identity involving modular graphs where all the vertices are integrated over the worldsheet.

Abstract:We describe a new approach to the definition of the moduli functor of stable varieties. While there is wide agreement as to what classes of varieties should appear, the notion of a family of stable surfaces is quite subtle, as key numerical invariants may fail to be constant in flat families. Our approach is to add natural stack structure to stable varieties. For example, given a canonical model we take the global-quotient stack structure arising from its realization as Proj of the canonical ring. Deformations of the stack structure preserve key numerical invariants of the stable variety, including the top self-intersection of the canonical divisor. This approach yields a transparent construction of the moduli stack of stable varieties as a global quotient of a suitable Hilbert scheme of weighted projective stacks.

Abstract:Wall-crossing formulas for various flavors of elliptic genus can be obtained using master spaces. We give a topological criterion which implies that such wall-crossing formulas are trivial. Applications are given for: GIT quotients, following Thaddeus; moduli of sheaves, following Mochizuki; Donaldson-Thomas and Vafa-Witten theory, following Joyce and Tanaka-Thomas respectively.

Generic models for genus 2 curves with real multiplication

Abstract:Explicit models of families of genus 2 curves with multiplication by $\sqrt D$ are known for $D= 2, 3, 5$. We obtain generic models for genus 2 curves over $\mathbb Q$ with real multiplication in 12 new cases, including all fundamental discriminants $D < 40$. A key step in our proof is to develop an algorithm for minimisation of conic bundles fibred over $\mathbb{P}^2$. We apply this algorithm to simplify the equations for the Mestre conic associated to the generic point on the Hilbert modular surface of fundamental discriminant $D < 100$ computed by Elkies--Kumar.

The Generalized Torelli Problem through the geometry of the Gauss map

Abstract:Given a non-hyperelliptic curve $C\in\mathscr{M}_g$ and $2\leq n\leq g-2$, we prove that the generic fiber of the Gauss map on $W_n$ has one element and we characterize its multiple locus. Assuming that $C$ doesn't have a $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k+1}^{k+1}$, for $1\leq k\leq n-1\leq g-3$, we solve the problem of reconstructing each $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$ and the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism, through information encoded in the Gauss map. For this purpose we introduce the notion of $\left(n+k\right)$-intersection loci and we study their dimensions. In the hyperelliptic case we prove that the image of the Gauss map is a union of sets whose closures are birational to their complete $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$, for each $1\leq k\leq n\leq g-1$, and that these also contain a copy of the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism. From the case $k=n$ we deduce that the closure of the image of the Gauss map is birational to $\mathbb{P}^n$.
