Abstract:In this paper, we give a polynomial time algorithm which determines if a given graph containing a triangle and no induced seven-vertex path is 3-colorable, and gives an explicit coloring if one exists. In previous work, we gave a polynomial time algorithm for three-coloring triangle-free graphs with no induced seven-vertex path. Combined, our work shows that three-coloring a graph with no induced seven-vertex path can be done in polynomial time.

Abstract:We give a linear-time algorithm to decide 3-colorability (and find a 3-coloring, if it exists) of quadrangulations of a fixed surface. The algorithm also allows to prescribe the coloring for a bounded number of vertices.

Abstract:Let be k non-negative integers. A graph G is -colorable if the vertex set of G can be partitioned into k sets , such that the induced subgraph has maximum degree at most for . Denote by the family of planar graphs without triangles adjacent to cycles of length 5 and 7. This paper proves that if , then G is (1, 1, 1)-colorable. As a corollary, every graph in can be decomposed into a matching and a 3-colorable graph.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 1, Page 111-145, February 2024. This is the first paper in a series whose goal is to give a polynomial-time algorithm for the 4-coloring problem and the 4-precoloring extension problem restricted to the class of graphs with no induced six-vertex path, thus proving a conjecture of Huang. Combined with previously known results, this completes the classification of the complexity of the 4-coloring problem for graphs with a connected forbidden induced subgraph. In this paper we give a polynomial-time algorithm that determines if a special kind of precoloring of a [math]-free graph has a precoloring extension, and constructs such an extension if one exists. Combined with the main result of the second paper of the series, this gives a complete solution to the problem.

Abstract:For any odd $t\ge 9$, we present a polynomial-time algorithm that solves the $3$-colouring problem, and finds a $3$-colouring if one exists, in $P_{t}$-free graphs of odd girth at least $t-2$. In particular, our algorithm works for $(P_9, C_3, C_5)$-free graphs, thus making progress towards determining the complexity of $3$-colouring in $P_t$-free graphs, which is open for $t\ge 8$.

Abstract:DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring, which was introduced by Dvořák and Postle [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 129 (2018) 38--54]. Zhang [Inform. Process. Lett. 113 (9) (2013) 354--356] showed that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is 3-choosable. Liu et al. [Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 178--189] showed that every planar graph without 4-, 5-, 6- and 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable. In this paper, we show that every planar graph with neither adjacent triangles nor 5-, 6-, 9-cycles is DP-3-colorable, which generalizes these results. Yu et al. gave three Bordeaux-type results by showing that (i) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least three and no 4-, 5-cycles is DP-3-colorable; (ii) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least two and no 4-, 5-, 6-cycles is DP-3-colorable; (iii) every planar graph with the distance of triangles at least two and no 5-, 6-, 7-cycles is DP-3-colorable. We also give two Bordeaux-type results in the last section: (i) every plane graph with neither 5-, 6-, 8-cycles nor triangles at distance less than two is DP-3-colorable; (ii) every plane graph with neither 4-, 5-, 7-cycles nor triangles at distance less than two is DP-3-colorable.

3-Coloring $C_4$ or $C_3$-free Diameter Two Graphs

Abstract:The question of whether 3-Coloring can be solved in polynomial-time for the diameter two graphs is a well-known open problem in the area of algorithmic graph theory. We study the problem restricted to graph classes that avoid cycles of given lengths as induced subgraphs. Martin et. al. [CIAC 2021] showed that the problem is polynomial-time solvable for $C_5$-free or $C_6$-free graphs, and, $(C_4,C_s)$-free graphs where $s \in \{3,7,8,9\}$. We extend their result proving that it is polynomial-time solvable for $(C_4,C_s)$-free graphs, for any constant $s$, and for $(C_3,C_7)$-free graphs. Our results also hold for the more general problem List 3-Colouring.

Abstract:One of the most fundamental results in graph theory is Mantel's theorem which determines the maximum number of edges in a triangle-free graph of order $n$. Recently a colorful variant of this problem has been solved. In such a variant we consider $c$ graphs on a common vertex set, thinking of each graph as edges in a distinct color, and want to determine the smallest number of edges in each color which guarantees existence of a rainbow triangle. Here, we solve the analogous problem for directed graphs without rainbow triangles, either directed or transitive, for any number of colors. The constructions and proofs essentially differ for $c=3$ and $c \geq 4$ and the type of the forbidden triangle. Additionally, we also solve the analogous problem in the setting of oriented graphs.

Abstract:We consider the problem of coloring a 3-colorable graph in polynomial time using as few colors as possible. This is one of the most challenging problems in graph algorithms. In this paper using Blum's notion of ``progress'', we develop a new combinatorial algorithm for the following: Given any 3-colorable graph with minimum degree $\ds>\sqrt n$, we can, in polynomial time, make progress towards a $k$-coloring for some $k=\sqrt{n/\ds}\cdot n^{o(1)}$. We balance our main result with the best-known semi-definite(SDP) approach which we use for degrees below $n^{0.605073}$. As a result, we show that $\tO(n^{0.19747})$ colors suffice for coloring 3-colorable graphs. This improves on the previous best bound of $\tO(n^{0.19996})$ by Kawarabayashi and Thorup in 2017.

Abstract:A graph G is uniquely k-colourable if the chromatic number of G is k and G has only one k-colouring up to permutation of the colours. Aksionov [On uniquely 3-colorable planar graphs, Discrete Math. 20 (1977), pp. 209-216] conjectured that every uniquely 3-colourable planar graph with at least four vertices has two adjacent triangles. However, in the same year, Melnikov and Steinberg [L.S. Mel'nikov and R. Steinberg, One counter example for two conjectures on three coloring, Discrete Math. 20 (1977), pp. 203-206.] disproved the conjecture by constructing a counterexample. In this paper, we prove that if a uniquely 3-colourable planar graph G has at most 4 triangles then G has two adjacent triangles. Furthermore, for any k > 5, we construct a uniquely 3-colourable planar graph with k triangles and without adjacent triangles.

Abstract:This is the second paper in a series of two. The goal of the series is to give a polynomial time algorithm for the $4$-coloring problem and the $4$-precoloring extension problem restricted to the class of graphs with no induced six-vertex path, thus proving a conjecture of Huang. Combined with previously known results this completes the classification of the complexity of the $4$-coloring problem for graphs with a connected forbidden induced subgraph. In this paper we give a polynomial time algorithm that starts with a $4$-precoloring of a graph with no induced six-vertex path, and outputs a polynomial-size collection of so-called excellent precolorings. Excellent precolorings are easier to handle than general ones, and, in addition, in order to determine whether the initial precoloring can be extended to the whole graph, it is enough to answer the same question for each of the excellent precolorings in the collection. The first paper in the series deals with excellent precolorings, thus providing a complete solution to the problem.

Abstract:We consider the problem of coloring a 3-colorable graph in polynomial time using as few colors as possible. We present a combinatorial algorithm getting down to $\tO(n^{4/11})$ colors. This is the first combinatorial improvement of Blum's $\tO(n^{3/8})$ bound from FOCS'90. Like Blum's algorithm, our new algorithm composes nicely with recent semi-definite approaches. The current best bound is $O(n^{0.2072})$ colors by Chlamtac from FOCS'07. We now bring it down to $O(n^{0.2038})$ colors.

Abstract:Given an integer $k>4$ and a graph $H$, we prove that, assuming P$\neq$NP, the List-$k$-Coloring Problem restricted to $H$-free graphs can be solved in polynomial time if and only if either every component of $H$ is a path on at most three vertices, or removing the isolated vertices of $H$ leaves an induced subgraph of the five-vertex path. In fact, the "if" implication holds for all $k\geq 1$.
