Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a non-uniform lattice in $PU(p,1)$ without torsion and with $p\geq2 $. We introduce the notion of volume for a representation $\rho:\Gamma \rightarrow PU(m,1)$ where $m \geq p$. We use this notion to generalize the Mostow--Prasad rigidity theorem. More precisely, we show that given a sequence of representations $\rho_n:\Gamma \rightarrow PU(m,1)$ such that $\lim_{n \to \infty} \text{Vol}(\rho_n) =\text{Vol}(M)$, then there must exist a sequence of elements $g_n \in PU(m,1)$ such that the representations $g_n \circ \rho_n \circ g_n^{-1}$ converge to a reducible representation $\rho_\infty$ which preserves a totally geodesic copy of $\mathbb{H}^p_\mathbb{C}$ and whose $\mathbb{H}^p_\mathbb{C}$-component is conjugated to the standard lattice embedding $i:\Gamma \rightarrow PU(p,1) < PU(m,1)$. Additionally, we show that the same definitions and results can be adapted when $\Gamma$ is a non-uniform lattice of $PSp(p,1)$ without torsion and for representations $\rho:\Gamma \rightarrow PSp(m,1)$, still mantaining the hypothesis $m \geq p \geq 2$.

Abstract:We prove an arithmetic regularity lemma for stable subsets of finite abelian groups, generalising our previous result for high-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields of prime order. A qualitative version of this generalisation was recently obtained by the first author in joint work with Conant and Pillay, using model-theoretic techniques. In contrast, the approach in the present paper is highly quantitative and relies on several key ingredients from arithmetic combinatorics.

Abstract:For a profinite group $G$ and a rigid analytic space $X$, we study when an $\mathcal O_X(X)$-linear representation $V$ of $G$ admits a lattice, i.e. an $\mathcal O_{\mathcal X}(\mathcal X)$-linear model for a suitable formal model $\mathcal X$ of $X$ in the sense of Berthelot. We give a positive answer, under mild assumptions, when $X$ is a ``wide open'' space. As a consequence, we are able to describe explicit open rational subdomains of $X$ over which $V$ is constant after reduction modulo a power of $p$. We give applications in two different directions. First, we prove explicit results on the reduction modulo powers of $p$ of sheaves of crystalline and semistable representations of fixed weight. Second, we focus on the sheaves of Galois representations on eigenvarieties, which are important examples of wide open spaces thanks to a result of Bellaïche and Chenevier. We give an application of our main results to the pseudorepresentation carried by the Coleman--Mazur eigencurve, which can be made explicit whenever equations for a rational subdomain of the eigencurve are given.

Asymptotic Cohomology and Uniform Stability for Lattices in Semisimple Groups

Abstract:It is, by now, classical that lattices in higher rank semisimple groups have various rigidity properties. In this work, we add another such rigidity property to the list: uniform stability with respect to the family of unitary operators on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces equipped with submultiplicative norms. Namely, we show that for (most) high-rank lattices, every finite-dimensional unitary "almost-representation" of $\Gamma$ is a small deformation of a (true) unitary representation. This extends a result of Kazhdan (1983) for amenable groups and of Burger-Ozawa-Thom (2013) for SL(n,Z) (for n>2). Towards this goal, we first build an elaborate cohomological theory capturing the obstruction to such stability, and show that the vanishing of second cohomology implies uniform stability in this setting. This cohomology can be roughly thought of as an asymptotic version of bounded cohomology, and sheds light on a question raised in Monod (2006) about a possible connection between vanishing of second bounded cohomology and Ulam stability.

Unimodular polytopes and a new Heller-type bound on totally unimodular matrices via Seymour's decomposition theorem

Abstract:We prove a sharp upper bound on the number of columns of a totally unimodular matrix with column sums $1$ which improves upon Heller's bound by a factor of $2$. The proof uses Seymour's decomposition theorem. Unimodular polytopes are lattice polytopes such that the vertices of every full-dimensional subsimplex form an affine lattice basis. This is a subclass of 0/1-polytopes and contains for instance edge polytopes of bipartite graphs. Our main result implies a sharp upper bound on the number of vertices of unimodular polytopes.

The aim of this paper is to prove an effective triple joint equidistribution result for primitive partial $R_\nu$-lattices $\Lambda$ of rank $\mathfrak{m}$ in $K_\nu^{\;\textbf{d}}$ as their covolume tends to infinity: of their $K_\nu$-linear span $V_\Lambda$ in the rank-$\mathfrak{m}$ Grassmannian space of $K_\nu^{\;\textbf{d}}$; of their shape in the modular quotient by $\operatorname{PGL}_\mathfrak{m}(R_\nu)$ of the Bruhat-Tits buildings of $\operatorname{PGL}_\mathfrak{m}(K_\nu)$; and of the shape of $\Lambda^\perp$ in the similar quotient for $\operatorname{PGL}_{\textbf{d}-\mathfrak{m}}(K_\nu)$, where $\Lambda^\perp$ is the orthogonal partial $R_\nu$-lattice of rank $\textbf{d}-\mathfrak{m}$ in the dual space of $K_\nu^{\;\textbf{d}}$. The main tools are a new refined $\text{LU}$ decomposition by blocks of elements of $\operatorname{SL}_\textbf{d}(K_\nu)$, techniques of Gorodnik and Nevo for counting integral points in well-rounded families of subsets of algebraic groups, and computations of volumes of various homogeneous spaces associated with partial $R_\nu$-lattices.

Abstract:We study semi-stable ideal lattices coming from real quadratic number fields. Specifically, we demonstrate infinite families of semi-stable and unstable ideal lattices of trace type, establishing explicit conditions on the canonical basis of an ideal that ensure stability; in particular, our result implies that an ideal lattice of trace type coming from a real quadratic field is semi-stable with positive probability. We also briefly discuss the connection between stability and well-roundedness of Euclidean lattices.

On the Maximum Theta Series over Unimodular Lattices

Abstract:The theta series of a lattice has been extensively studied in the literature and is closely related to a critical quantity widely used in the fields of physical layer security and cryptography, known as the flatness factor, or equivalently, the smoothing parameter of a lattice. Both fields raise the fundamental question of determining the (globally) maximum theta series over a particular set of volume-one lattices, namely, the stable lattices. In this work, we present a property of unimodular lattices, a subfamily of stable lattices, to verify that the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ achieves the largest possible value of theta series over the set of unimodular lattices. Such a result moves towards proving a conjecture recently stated by Regev and Stephens-Davidowitz: any unimodular lattice, except for those lattices isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$, has a strictly smaller theta series than that of $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$. Our techniques are mainly based on studying the ratio of the theta series of a unimodular lattice to the theta series of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, called the secrecy ratio. We relate the Regev and Stephens-Davidowitz conjecture with another conjecture for unimodular lattices, known in the literature as the Belfiore-Solé conjecture. The latter assumes that the secrecy ratio of any unimodular lattice has a symmetry point, which is exactly where the global minimum of the secrecy ratio is achieved.

Abstract:Approximate lattices are aperiodic generalisations of lattices of locally compact groups that were first studied in seminal work of Yves Meyer. They are defined as those uniformly discrete approximate subgroups (symmetric subsets stable under multiplication up to a finite error) of locally compact groups that have finite co-volume. Meyer showed that approximate lattices of Euclidean spaces (a.k.a. Meyer sets) are related to lattices in higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces via the cut-and-project construction. A fundamental challenge of the theory of approximate lattices is to extend Meyer's theorem beyond Euclidean spaces. Our main result provides a complete structure theorem for approximate lattices valid in all linear algebraic groups over local fields and their finite products, in particular providing the most general extension of Meyer's theorem to date. Our proof relies on an extension of a theorem of Lubotzky--Mozes--Raghunathan to approximate lattices in S-adic semi-simple groups, a notion of cohomology tailored to the study of approximate subgroups, a universality statement complementing a recent result of Hrushovski and a generalisation of a result of Burger and Monod about bounded cohomology of lattices.

Abstract:We prove that any ergodic measure-preserving action of an irreducible lattice in a semisimple group, with finite center and each simple factor having rank at least two, either has finite orbits or has finite stabilizers. The same dichotomy holds for many commensurators of such lattices. The above are derived from more general results on groups with the Howe-Moore property and property $(T)$. We prove similar results for commensurators in such groups and for irreducible lattices (and commensurators) in products of at least two such groups, at least one of which is totally disconnected.

Coherent systems over approximate lattices in amenable groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a second-countable amenable group with a uniform $k$-approximate lattice $\Lambda$. For a projective discrete series representation $(\pi, \mathcal{H}_{\pi})$ of $G$ of formal degree $d_{\pi} > 0$, we show that $D^-(\Lambda) \geq d_{\pi} / k$ is necessary for the coherent system $\pi(\Lambda) g$ to be complete in $\mathcal{H}_{\pi}$. In addition, we show that if $\pi(\Lambda^2) g$ is minimal, then $D^+ (\Lambda^2) \leq d_{\pi} k$. Both necessary conditions recover sharp density theorems for uniform lattices and are new even for Gabor systems in $L^2 (\mathbb{R})$. As an application of the approach, we also obtain necessary density conditions for coherent frames and Riesz sequences associated to general discrete sets. All results are valid for amenable unimodular groups of possibly exponential growth.

Abstract:Let $H < G$ both be noncompact connected semisimple real algebraic groups where the former is maximal proper and $\Gamma < G$ be a lattice. Building on the work of Gorodnik-Weiss, we refine their techniques and obtain effective results. More precisely, we prove effective convergence of the distribution of dense $\Gamma$-orbits in $G/H$ to some limiting density on $G/H$ assuming effective equidistribution of regions of maximal horospherical orbits under one-parameter diagonal flows inside a dense $H$-orbit in $\Gamma \backslash G$. The significance of the effectivized argument is due to the recent effective equidistribution results of Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi-Wang for $\Delta(\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)) < \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R) \times \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)$ and $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R) < \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb C)$ and arithmetic lattices $\Gamma$, and future generalizations in that direction.

Abstract:In this paper, firstly we show that the entropy constants of the number of independent sets on certain plane lattices are the same as the entropy constants of the corresponding cylindrical and toroidal lattices. Secondly, we consider three more complex lattices which can not be handled by a single transfer matrix as in the plane quadratic lattice case. By introducing the concept of transfer multiplicity, we obtain the lower and upper bounds of the entropy constants of crossed quadratic lattice, generalized aztec diamond lattice and 8-8-4 lattice.

A quantitative stability result for the sphere packing problem in dimensions 8 and 24

Abstract:We prove explicit stability estimates for the sphere packing problem in dimensions 8 and 24, showing that, in the lattice case, if a lattice is $\sim \varepsilon$ close to satisfying the optimal density, then it is, in a suitable sense, $O(\varepsilon^{1/2})$ close to the $E_8$ and Leech lattices, respectively. In the periodic setting, we prove that, under the same assumptions, we may take a large 'frame' through which our packing locally looks like $E_8$ or $\Lambda_{24}.$ Our methods make explicit use of the magic functions constructed by M. Viazovska in dimension 8 and by H. Cohn, A. Kumar, S. Miller, the second author, and M. Viazovska in dimension 24, together with results of independent interest on the abstract stability of the lattices $E_8$ and $\Lambda_{24}.$

Abstract:An extension of Szemerédi's Theorem is proved for sets of positive density in approximate lattices in general locally compact and second countable abelian groups. As a consequence, we establish a recent conjecture of Klick, Strungaru and Tcaciuc. Via a novel version of Furstenberg's Correspondence principle, which should be of independent interest, we show that our Szemerédi Theorems can be deduced from a general \emph{transverse} multiple recurrence theorem, which we establish using recent works of Austin.

Abstract: In this paper we investigate boundedness and volumes of generalised pairs, and give applications to usual pairs especially to a class of pairs that we call stable log minimal models. Fixing the dimension and a DCC set controlling coefficients, we will show that the set of volumes of all projective generalised lc pairs $(X,B+M)$ under the given data, satisfies the DCC. Futhermore, we will show that in the klt case, the set of such pairs with ample $K_X+B+M$ and fixed volume, forms a bounded family. We prove a result about descent of nef divisors to bounded families. This is the key to proving the above and various other results. We will then apply the above to study projective lc pairs $(X,B)$ with abundant $K_X+B$ of arbitrary Kodaira dimension. In particular, we show that the set of Iitaka volumes of such pairs satisfies DCC under some natural boundedness assumptions on the fibres of the Iitaka fibration. We define stable log minimal models which consist of a projective lc pair $(X,B)$ with semi-ample $K_X+B$ together with a divisor $A\ge 0$ so that $K_X+B+A$ is ample and $A$ does not contain any non-klt centre of $(X,B)$. This is a generalisation of both usual stable pairs of general type and stable log Calabi-Yau pairs. Fixing appropriate invariants we show that stable log minimal models form a bounded family. Then we discuss connection with moduli spaces.
