Abstract:We prove that in some cases definable thin sets (including chains) of Borel partial orderings are necessarily countably cofinal. This includes the following cases: analytic thin sets, ROD thin sets in the Solovay model, and $\Sigma^1_2$ thin sets in the assumption that $\omega_1^{L[x]}<\omega_1$ for all reals $x$. We also prove that definable thin wellorderings admit partitions into definable chains in the Solovay model.

Abstract:We develop an algebraic notion of recognizability for languages of words indexed by countable linear orderings. We prove that this notion is effectively equivalent to definability in monadic second-order (MSO) logic. We also provide three logical applications. First, we establish the first known collapse result for the quantifier alternation of MSO logic over countable linear orderings. Second, we solve an open problem posed by Gurevich and Rabinovich, concerning the MSO-definability of sets of rational numbers using the reals in the background. Third, we establish the MSO-definability of the set of yields induced by an MSO-definable set of trees, confirming a conjecture posed by Bruy{è}re, Carton, and S{é}nizergues.

Quantifier elimination in quasianalytic structures via non-standard analysis

Abstract:The paper is a continuation of our earlier article where we developed a theory of active and non-active infinitesimals and intended to establish quantifier elimination in quasianalytic structures. That article, however, did not attain full generality, which refers to one of its results, namely the theorem on an active infinitesimal, playing an essential role in our non-standard analysis. The general case was covered in our subsequent preprint, which constitutes a basis for the approach presented here. We also provide a quasianalytic exposition of the results concerning rectilinearization of terms and of definable functions from our earlier research. It will be used to demonstrate a quasianalytic structure corresponding to a Denjoy-Carleman class which, unlike the classical analytic structure, does not admit quantifier elimination in the language of restricted quasianalytic functions augmented merely by the reciprocal function. More precisely, we construct a plane definable curve, which indicates both that the classical theorem by J. Denef and L. van den Dries as well as Łojasiewicz's theorem that every subanalytic curve is semianalytic are no longer true for quasianalytic structures. Besides rectilinearization of terms, our construction makes use of some theorems on power substitution for Denjoy-Carleman classes and on non-extendability of quasianalytic function germs. The last result relies on Grothendieck's factorization and open mapping theorems for (LF)-spaces. Note finally that this paper comprises our earlier preprints on the subject from May 2012.

On the first-order theories of quaternions and octonions

Abstract:Let $L$ be the language of rings. We provide an axiomatization of the $L$-theories of quaternions and octonions and we characterize the models of mentioned theories: they coincide, up to isomorphism, to quaternion and octonion algebras over a real closed field, respectively. We prove these theories are complete, model complete and they do not have quantifier elimination. Then, we focus on the class of ordered polynomials. Over $\mathbb{H}$ and $\mathbb{O}$ these polynomials are of special interest in hypercomplex analysis since they are slice regular. We deduce some fundamental properties of the zero loci of ordered polynomials from completeness and we prove the failure of quantifier elimination for the fragment of ordered formulas.

Abstract:The paper investigates down-sets associated to well quasi orders. Of particular language-theoretic interest is the quasi order u ⩽sv (resp. u ⩽℘v) of u being a subword (resp. a Parikh subword) of v, as well as their inverses. We establish a number of results about the regularity and effective regularity of the down-sets, in particular, a general condition for the effective regularity of the down-set associated to an inverse well quasi order (Theorem 7.1 ). It is decidable whether or not an arbitrary regular language results as a down-set from an infinite or bi-infinite word, whereas the same problem is undecidable for context-free language. A quasi order being a well quasi order is connected to arbitrary languages being confluent.

Provable better quasi orders

Abstract:It has recently been shown that fairly strong axiom systems such as $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ cannot prove that the antichain with three elements is a better quasi order ($\mathsf{bqo}$). In the present paper, we give a complete characterization of the finite partial orders that are provably $\mathsf{bqo}$ in such axiom systems. The result will also be extended to infinite orders. As an application, we derive that a version of the minimal bad array lemma is weak over $\mathsf{ACA_0}$. In sharp contrast, a recent result shows that the same version is equivalent to $\Pi^1_2$-comprehension over the stronger base theory $\mathsf{ATR}_0$.

Refinement of Bratteli-Vershik models

Abstract:In the zero-dimensional systems, the Bratteli-Vershik models can be built upon certain closed sets that are called `quasi-sections' in this article. There exists a bijective correspondence between the topological conjugacy classes of triples of zero-dimensional systems and quasi-sections and the topological conjugacy classes of Bratteli-Vershik models. Therefore, we can get refined Bratteli-Vershik models if we get certain refined quasi-sections. The basic sets are such refined quasi-sections that bring `closing property' on the corresponding Bratteli-Vershik models. We show a direct proof on the existence of basic sets. Thorough investigations on quasi-sections and basic sets are done. Furthermore, it would be convenient for the Bratteli-Vershik models to concern minimal sets. To this point, we show the existence of the Bratteli-Vershik models whose minimal sets are properly ordered. On the other hand, we can get certain refinements with respect to the Bratteli-Vershikizability condition or the decisiveness.

Abstract:Linear logical frameworks with subexponentials have been used for the specification of, among other systems, proof systems, concurrent programming languages and linear authorisation logics. In these frameworks, subexponentials can be configured to allow or not for the application of the contraction and weakening rules while the exchange rule can always be applied. This means that formulae in such frameworks can only be organised as sets and multisets of formulae not being possible to organise formulae as lists of formulae. This paper investigates the proof theory of linear logic proof systems in the non-commutative variant. These systems can disallow the application of exchange rule on some subexponentials. We investigate conditions for when cut elimination is admissible in the presence of non-commutative subexponentials, investigating the interaction of the exchange rule with the local and non-local contraction rules. We also obtain some new undecidability and decidability results on non-commutative linear logic with subexponentials.

Abstract:Presburger Arithmetic $\mathop{\mathbf{PrA}}\nolimits$ is the true theory of natural numbers with addition. We consider linear orderings interpretable in Presburger Arithmetic and establish various necessary and sufficient conditions for interpretability depending on dimension $n$ of interpretation. We note this problem is relevant to the interpretations of Presburger Arithmetic in itself, as well as the characterization of automatic orderings. For $n=2$ we obtain the complete criterion of interpretability.

Abstract:Abstract In 1998 R. Downey formulated a problem: to describe a property $P$ of classical order types, which guarantees that if $\mathcal{L}$ is a low linear order and $P$ holds for the order type of $\mathcal{L}$ then $\mathcal{L}$ is isomorphic to a computable linear order. We find a new such property $P$. Also, we give an upper bound on a complexity of an isomorphism between computable and low copies and show that this bound is sharp.

Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

Abstract:Introduced by Dal Lago and Hofmann, quantitative realizability is a technique used to define models for logics based on Multiplicative Linear Logic. A particularity is that functions are interpreted as bounded time computable functions. It has been used to give new and uniform proofs of soundness of several type systems with respect to certain time complexity classes. We propose a reformulation of their ideas in the setting of Krivine's classical realizability. The framework obtained generalizes Dal Lago and Hofmann's realizability, and reveals deep connections between quantitative realizability and a linear variant of Cohen's forcing.

Quasi-linear functionals on locally compact spaces

Abstract:This paper has two goals: to present some new results that are necessary for further study and applications of quasi-linear functionals, and, by combining known and new results, to serve as a convenient single source for anyone interested in quasi-linear functionals on locally compact non-compact spaces or on compact spaces. We study signed and positive quasi-linear functionals paying close attention to singly generated subalgebras. The paper gives representation theorems for quasi-linear functionals on $C_c(X)$ and for bounded quasi-linear functionals on $C_0(X)$ on a locally compact space, and for quasi-linear functionals on $C(X)$ on a compact space. There is an order-preserving bijection between quasi-linear functionals and compact-finite topological measures, which is also "isometric" when topological measures are finite. Finally, we further study properties of quasi-linear functionals and give an explicit example of a quasi-linear functional.

The weakness of finding descending sequences in ill-founded linear orders

Abstract:We explore the Weihrauch degree of the problems ``find a bad sequence in a non-well quasi order'' ($\mathsf{BS}$) and ``find a descending sequence in an ill-founded linear order'' ($\mathsf{DS}$). We prove that $\mathsf{DS}$ is strictly Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{BS}$, correcting our mistaken claim in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. This is done by separating their respective first-order parts. On the other hand, we show that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have the same finitary and deterministic parts, confirming that $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ have very similar uniform computational strength. We prove that König's lemma $\mathsf{KL}$ and the problem $\mathsf{wList}_{2^{\mathbb{N}},\leq\omega}$ of enumerating a given non-empty countable closed subset of $2^{\mathbb{N}}$ are not Weihrauch reducible to $\mathsf{DS}$ or $\mathsf{BS}$, resolving two main open questions raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.03840" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.03840">arXiv:2010.03840</a>]. We also answer the question, raised in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1804.10968" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.10968">arXiv:1804.10968</a>], on the existence of a ``parallel quotient'' operator, and study the behavior of $\mathsf{BS}$ and $\mathsf{DS}$ under the quotient with some known problems.
