Abstract:The description of the initial state of heavy ion collisions, which covers the description of the incoming nuclei, the initial hard and soft interactions, the resulting spatial geometry of the produced matter, as well as the dynamic approach to a medium well described by hydrodynamics, has important consequences for the study of hard and electromagnetic probes. I will review new developments presented at Hard Probes 2020 that have an impact on these aspects of our understanding of the initial state of heavy ion and smaller system collisions.

Abstract:Hard QCD processes in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions become increasingly relevant and they can be used as probes of the dense matter formed during the violent scatterings. We will discuss how one can use these hard probes to study the properties of the dense matter and the associated phenomenologies. Abstract:The Physics of Hard Sphere Experiment has two incarnations: the first as a scattering and rheology experiment on STS-83 and STS-94 and the second as a microscopy experiment to be performed in the future on LMM on the space station. Here we describe some of the quantitative and qualitative results from previous flights on the dynamics of crystallization in microgravity and especially the observed interaction of growing crystallites in the coexistance regime. To clarify rheological measurements we also present ground based experiments on the low shear rate viscosity and diffusion coefficient of several hard sphere experiments at high volume fraction. We also show how these experiments will be performed with confocal microscopy and laser tweezers in our lab and as preparation for the phAse II experiments on LMM. One of the main aims of the microscopy study will be the control of colloidal samples using an array of applied fields with an eye toward colloidal architectures. Temperature gradients, electric field gradients, laser tweezers and a variety of switchable imposed surface patterns are used toward this control.

Abstract:In the study of quark–gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, hard and electromagnetic (EM) processes can be used to probe a wide range of properties of the hot and dense medium, from space–time profiles of the bulk matter, bulk transport coefficients to EM responses and the jet transport parameter. These medium properties, how they can be studied through hard and EM probes and the status of recent theoretical and phenomenological investigations are reviewed in this talk.

Abstract:We highlight the STAR experiment's hard probes results, including jets and heavy flavor production in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. Various jet-substructure observables in proton-proton collisions are presented to explore both perturbative and non-perturbative regimes of quantum chromodynamics. Finally, we discuss the STAR experiment's hard probes physics program for ongoing data taking.

Next there will be a discussion of possible future experiments on the violent collisions elastic collisions of polarized protons at the 70 GeV U-70 accelerator at IHEP-Protvino in Russia and the new high intensity 50 GeV J-PARC at Tokai in Japan.

Hard probes in isobar collisions as a probe of the neutron skin

Abstract:We present an estimate of the yield of hard probes expected for collisions of the isobars $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr at collision energies reachable at RHIC and the LHC\@. These yields are proportional to the number of binary nucleon-nucleon interactions, which is characteristically different due to the presence of the large neutron skin in $^{96}_{40}$Zr. This provides an independent opportunity to measure the difference between the neutron skin of $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr, which can provide an important constraint on the Equation of State of cold neutron-rich matter.

Hard and electromagnetic probes: plans for future measurements at the CERN SPS

Abstract:The CERN SuperProtoSynchrotron (SPS) represents an ideal facility for fixed-target heavy-ion experiments exploring the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter in the region $200\le\mu_{\rm B}\le500$ MeV. It can deliver high-intensity beams ($>10^6$ Pb/s), allowing a study of rare probes of the Quark-Gluon Plasma, including electromagnetic and hard processes. The NA61/SHINE experiment is currently active and plans to perform a first direct measurement of open charm production in Pb--Pb collisions at top SPS energy and possibly at lower energies. The project of a new experiment, NA60+, based on a muon spectrometer coupled to a vertex spectrometer is currently being developed, for the study of dimuon and heavy quark production, and a Letter of Intent was recently submitted. In this contribution the physics motivation for the studies of rare probes, the existing and planned experimental set-ups and their expected physics performance will be discussed.

Abstract:In 2005, Railsback et al. proposed a very simple model ({\em Stupid Model}) that could be implemented within a couple of hours, and later extended to demonstrate the use of common ABM platform functionality. They provided implementations of the model in several agent based modelling platforms, and compared the platforms for ease of implementation of this simple model, and performance. In this paper, I implement Railsback et al's Stupid Model in the EcoLab simulation platform, a C++ based modelling platform, demonstrating that it is a feasible platform for these sorts of models, and compare the performance of the implementation with Repast, Mason and Swarm versions.

Abstract:This white paper reports on the discussions of the 2018 Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) topical program "From bound states to the continuum: Connecting bound state calculations with scattering and reaction theory". One of the biggest and most important frontiers in nuclear theory today is to construct better and stronger bridges between bound state calculations and calculations in the continuum, especially scattering and reaction theory, as well as teasing out the influence of the continuum on states near threshold. This is particularly challenging as many-body structure calculations typically use a bound state basis, while reaction calculations more commonly utilize few-body continuum approaches. The many-body bound state and few-body continuum methods use different language and emphasize different properties. To build better foundations for these bridges, we present an overview of several bound state and continuum methods and, where possible, point to current and possible future connections.

Abstract:With the invention of the scanning probe microscope, the probe technique has been used to image the microstructure of materials at atomic scale, especially to detect and analyze different interactions in recent years. A new scanning probe based measurement platform has appeared and drawn wide attention from the scientific community. In this paper, a new concept, probe experimental mechanics, is proposed, which is used to detect the mechanical properties of materials and structures at micro/nano scale. Some of its typical applications are presented. The topics in the paper include probe measurement system and its calibration, the interactions between the surfaces of a probe and a specimen, and probe force sensor.

Abstract:Invited talk at the EPS-HEPP meeting in Krakow, July 2009. My first thought, and presumably the default expectation, was that I'd talk in a general way about the grandeur of high energy physics and the exciting future we anticipate, especially with LHC coming on line. But an unfortunate byproduct of the delays at LHC and the slow pace of other experiments is that I've already done that sort of thing many times, as have many other conference embellishers, and the ritual is getting stale. So I'll speed through the litany, and then indulge myself by advertising some ideas I've been fond of, some for quite a while, that I think are interesting, promising, and not as well known as they should be.

Abstract:We give the description of discretized moduli spaces (d.m.s.) $\Mcdisc$ introduced in \cite{Ch1} in terms of discrete de Rham cohomologies for moduli spaces $\Mgn$. The generating function for intersection indices (cohomological classes) of d.m.s. is found. Classes of highest degree coincide with the ones for the continuum moduli space $\Mc$. To show it we use a matrix model technique. The Kontsevich matrix model is the generating function in the continuum case, and the matrix model with the potential $N\alpha \tr {\bigl(- \fr 14 ŁXŁX -\fr12\log (1-X)-\fr12X\bigr)}$ is the one for d.m.s. In the latest case the effects of Deligne--Mumford reductions become relevant, and we use the stratification procedure in order to express integrals over open spaces $\Mdisc$ in terms of intersection indices, which are to be calculated on compactified spaces $\Mcdisc$. We find and solve constraint equations on partition function $\cal Z$ of our matrix model expressed in times for d.m.s.: $t^\pm_m=\tr \fr{\d^m}{\dł^m}\fr1{\e^ł-1}$. It appears that $\cal Z$ depends only on even times and ${\cal Z}[t^\pm_\cdot]=C(åN) \e^{\cal A}\e^{F(\{t^{-}_{2n}\}) +F(\{-t^{+}_{2n}\})}$, where $F(\{t^\pm_{2n}\})$ is a logarithm of the partition function of the Kontsevich model, $\cal A$ being a quadratic differential operator in $\dd{t^\pm_{2n}}$.
