Abstract:With the invention of the scanning probe microscope, the probe technique has been used to image the microstructure of materials at atomic scale, especially to detect and analyze different interactions in recent years. A new scanning probe based measurement platform has appeared and drawn wide attention from the scientific community. In this paper, a new concept, probe experimental mechanics, is proposed, which is used to detect the mechanical properties of materials and structures at micro/nano scale. Some of its typical applications are presented. The topics in the paper include probe measurement system and its calibration, the interactions between the surfaces of a probe and a specimen, and probe force sensor.
