Abstract:The description of the initial state of heavy ion collisions, which covers the description of the incoming nuclei, the initial hard and soft interactions, the resulting spatial geometry of the produced matter, as well as the dynamic approach to a medium well described by hydrodynamics, has important consequences for the study of hard and electromagnetic probes. I will review new developments presented at Hard Probes 2020 that have an impact on these aspects of our understanding of the initial state of heavy ion and smaller system collisions.

Abstract:The 5th international Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions was held in May 2012 in Cagliari, Italy. This contribution summarises some of the experimental highlights presented at the meeting, concentrating on new results from LHC and RHIC on parton energy loss ('jet-quenching') and heavy quark meson production ('quarkonia suppression').

Abstract:In 2005, Railsback et al. proposed a very simple model ({\em Stupid Model}) that could be implemented within a couple of hours, and later extended to demonstrate the use of common ABM platform functionality. They provided implementations of the model in several agent based modelling platforms, and compared the platforms for ease of implementation of this simple model, and performance. In this paper, I implement Railsback et al's Stupid Model in the EcoLab simulation platform, a C++ based modelling platform, demonstrating that it is a feasible platform for these sorts of models, and compare the performance of the implementation with Repast, Mason and Swarm versions.

Abstract:This invited summary gives some concluding remarks regarding theoretical aspects of the research presented at Charm2010. I will specialize to the role of theory and the relative reach of theory and experiment in three of the major areas of charm physics address at this conference, specifically 1) charm production, 2) charm weak decays, and 3) charm hadron spectroscopy. After a discussion of the status of progress on representative topics in each of these areas I will conclude with a previously unrelated Feynman story from a conference in the early days of charm.

Abstract:In the study of quark–gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, hard and electromagnetic (EM) processes can be used to probe a wide range of properties of the hot and dense medium, from space–time profiles of the bulk matter, bulk transport coefficients to EM responses and the jet transport parameter. These medium properties, how they can be studied through hard and EM probes and the status of recent theoretical and phenomenological investigations are reviewed in this talk.

Abstract:Hard QCD processes in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions become increasingly relevant and they can be used as probes of the dense matter formed during the violent scatterings. We will discuss how one can use these hard probes to study the properties of the dense matter and the associated phenomenologies. Abstract:Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is a firmly established part of the Standard Model, yet its long distance properties remain challenging at a conceptual level. In recent years significant experimental and theoretical progress has been made towards a field theoretic understanding of hadrons as QCD bound states, addressing the complex properties of relativistic bound states in a gluon condensate with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry. In this introductory talk I give a personal view of some of the issues involved: Measuring hadron matrix elements, understanding their QCD dynamics and explaining the apparently close relationship between hard and soft processes.

Abstract:John Wheeler’s description of the progression from graduate student to professor as being the passage from knowing everything about nothing to knowing nothing about everything carries over with obvious (and inessential) modifications to the progression from talks at parallel sessions to the conference summary. I feel especially daunted here, after listening to a series of beautiful plenary talks that have already summarized their subject areas, so that I’m reduced to providing a summary of the second order. In order to supply at least a small amount of value added, I’ll try to frame the new developments actually reported at the Conference within the broader context of contemporary physics, and also to indicate a few directions that I feel are important and promising, but which did not get emphasized during the Conference. 1. Abstract:We highlight the STAR experiment's hard probes results, including jets and heavy flavor production in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. Various jet-substructure observables in proton-proton collisions are presented to explore both perturbative and non-perturbative regimes of quantum chromodynamics. Finally, we discuss the STAR experiment's hard probes physics program for ongoing data taking.

Abstract:There will be a review of the history of polarized proton beams, and a discussion of the unexpected and still unexplained large transverse spin effects found in several high energy proton-proton spin experiments at the ZGS, AGS, Fermilab and RHIC. Next there will be a discussion of possible future experiments on the violent collisions elastic collisions of polarized protons at the 70 GeV U-70 accelerator at IHEP-Protvino in Russia and the new high intensity 50 GeV J-PARC at Tokai in Japan.

Abstract:A summary of the experimental results of the TOP2014 International Workshop in Cannes, France, is presented. This inspiring conference clearly showed the richness and diversity of top-quark physics research. Results cover a very broad spectrum of analyses involving studies of the strong and electroweak interactions of the top quark, high-precision measurements of intrinsic top-quark properties, developments of new tools in top-quark analyses, observations of new Standard Model processes, the interaction between the top quark and the Higgs boson and sensitive searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.
