Abstract:Rosser theories play an important role in the study of the incompleteness phenomenon and mete-mathematics of arithmetic. In this paper, we first define notions of $n$-Rosser theories, exact $n$-Rosser theories, effectively $n$-Rosser theories and effectively exact $n$-Rosser theories (see Definition 1.6). Our definitions are not restricted to arithmetic languages. Then we systematically examine properties of $n$-Rosser theories and relationships among them. Especially, we generalize some important theorems about Rosser theories for RE sets in the literature to $n$-Rosser theories in a general setting.

Abstract:Given a rational number $r$ such that $2r$ is not an integer, we prove that $\tan^2(r\pi)$ is irrational unless it is equal to $0$, $1$, $3$ or $\frac{1}{3}$, using only basic trigonometry and the Rational Root Theorem. Moreover, we deduce that $\tan(r\pi)$, $\cos^2(r\pi)$ ans $\cos(r\pi)$ are irrational numbers except in usual cases.

Abstract:We provide elementary proofs of Lemmas 7.1 and 7.4 appearing in "The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture and the Little Prince", by B. Kloeckner and G. Kuperberg. The Lemmas play an important role in the derivation of novel isoperimetric inequalities. The original proofs relied on Sage, a symbolic algebra package, to factor certain algebraic varieties into irreducible components.

Abstract:For most purposes, one can replace the use of Rolle's theorem and the mean value theorem, which are not constructively valid, by the law of bounded change. The proof of two basic results in numerical analysis, the error term for Lagrange interpolation and Simpson's rule, however seem to require the full strength of the classical Rolle's Theorem. Abstract:Dedekind's proof of the Cantor–Bernstein theorem is based on his chain theory, not on Cantor's well-ordering principle. A careful analysis of the proof extracts an argument structure that can be seen in the many other proofs that have been given since. I contend there is essentially one proof that comes in two variants due to Dedekind and Zermelo , respectively. This paper is a case study in analysing proofs of a single theorem within a given methodological framework, here Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (ZF). It uses tools from proof theory, but focuses on heuristic ideas that shape proofs and on logical strategies that help to construct them. It is rooted in a perspective on Beweistheorie that predates its close connection and almost exclusive attention to the goals of Hilbert's finitist consistency programme. This earlier perspective can be brought to life (only) with the support of powerful computational tools. This article is part of the theme issue ‘The notion of ‘simple proof’ - Hilbert's 24th problem’.

Abstract:This paper is purely expositional. The statement of the Abel-Ruffini theorem on unsolvability of equations using radicals is simple and well-known. We sketch an elementary proof of this theorem. We do not use the terms 'field extension', 'Galois group' and even 'group'. However, our presentation is a good way to learn (or recall) starting idea of the Galois theory. Our exposition follows `Mathematical Omnibus' of S. Tabachnikov and D.B. Fuchs (in English, http://www.math.psu.edu/tabachni/Books/taba.pdf). The main difference is that we show how the proof could have been invented. The paper is accessible for students familiar with complex numbers, and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians. The material is presented as a sequence of problems, which is peculiar not only to Zen monasteries but also to advanced mathematical education; most problems are presented with hints or solutions.
The missing proof of Paley's theorem about lacunary coefficients

Abstract:We modify the standard proof of Paley's theorem about lacunary coefficients of functions in $H^1$ to work without analytic factorization. This leads to the first direct proof of the extension of Paley's theorem that we applied to the former Littlewood conjecture about $L^1$ norms of exponential sums.

Abstract:In graph theory, a graceful labeling of a graph with m edges is a labeling of its vertices with a subset of the integers ranging from 0 to m inclusive, such that no two vertices share a label, and each edge is uniquely identified by the absolute difference of labels assigned to its endpoints. The Kotzig-Ringel-Rosa conjecture asserts that every tree admits a graceful labeling. We provide a proof of this long standing conjecture via a functional reformulation of the conjecture and a composition lemma.
