Abstract:In 2005, B\"ottcher and Wenzel raised the conjecture that if $X,Y$ are real square matrices, then $||XY-YX||^2\leq 2||X||^2||Y||^2$, where $||\cdot||$ is the Frobenius norm. Various proofs of this conjecture were found in the last few years by several authors. We here give another proof. This proof is highly conceptual and requires minimal computation. We also briefly discuss related inequalities, in particular, the classical Chern-do Camo-Kobayashi inequality.

Abstract:Recently, van den Berg and Jonasson gave the first substantial extension of the BK inequality for non-product measures: they proved that, for k-out-of-n measures, the probability that two increasing events occur disjointly is at most the product of the two individual probabilities. We show several other extensions and modifications of the BK <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://inequality.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> particular, we prove that the antiferromagnetic Ising Curie-Weiss model satisfies the BK inequality for all increasing events. We prove that this also holds for the Curie-Weiss model with three-body interactions under the so-called Negative Lattice Condition. For the ferromagnetic Ising model we show that the probability that two events occur `cluster-disjointly' is at most the product of the two individual probabilities, and we give a more abstract form of this result for arbitrary Gibbs measures. The above cases are derived from a general abstract theorem whose proof is based on an extension of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random-cluster representation for all probability distributions and on a `folding procedure' which generalizes an argument of D. Reimer.

A short proof of an identity related to Type IV superorthogonality

Abstract:We provide a much shorter but even more powerful proof of an algebraic identity, which can be used to establish the direct and the converse inequality under Type IV superorthogonality. As an application, we obtain the optimal order of the formal constant in the direct inequality. This order turns out to be also sharp for Type III superorthogonality. When $p\geq 2$, our result recovers the optimal order of the constant in the Burkholder-Gundy inequality in martingale theory, and also recovers the currently best order of the constant in the reverse Littlewood-Paley inequality. We also introduce variants of Type IV superorthogonality, under which we prove the converse inequality.

Abstract:The Dvoretzky--Kiefer--Wolfowitz--Massart inequality gives a sub-Gaussian tail bound on the supremum norm distance between the empirical distribution function of a random sample and its population counterpart. We provide a short proof of a result that improves the existing bound in two respects. First, our one-sided bound holds without any restrictions on the failure probability, thereby verifying a conjecture of Birnbaum and McCarty (1958). Second, it is local in the sense that it holds uniformly over sub-intervals of the real line with an error rate that adapts to the behaviour of the population distribution function on the interval.

Abstract:Martin Kneser proved the following addition theorem for every abelian group $G$. If $A,B \subseteq G$ are finite and nonempty, then $|A+B| \ge |A+K| + |B+K| - |K|$ where $K = \{g \in G \mid g+A+B = A+B \}$. Here we give a short proof of this based on a simple intersection union argument.

Abstract:In this article, we studied the inverse Erdős-Heilbronn problem with the restricted sumset from two components $A$ and $B$ that are not necessarily the same. We give a completely elementary proof for the problem in $\mathbb{Z}$ and some partial results that contributes to the elementary proof of the problem in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, avoiding the usage of the powerful polynomial method and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.

Abstract:The famous hypercontractive estimate discovered independently by Gross, Bonami and Beckner has had a great impact on combinatorics and theoretical computer science since it was first used in this setting in a seminal paper by Kahn, Kalai and Linial. The usual proofs of this inequality begin with two-point space, where some elementary calculus is used and then generalised immediately by introducing another dimension using submultiplicativity (Minkowski's integral inequality). In this paper, we prove this inequality using information theory. We compare the entropy of a pair of correlated vectors in {0,1}n to their separate entropies, analysing them bit by bit (not as a figure of speech, but as the bits are revealed) using the chain rule of entropy.

Abstract:For given set of $m$ positive numbers satisfying the conditions: $$ a_1 \geq a_2 \geq , ... \geq a_m \geq 0, $$ the inequality $$ \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}a^r_s \geq \left[ \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}a_s\right]^r, \quad r > 1, $$ was proved by H. Weinberger. The generalization of Weinberger's result takes the form $$ \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}f(a_s) \geq f\left( \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}a_s\right), $$ where $f$ is a convex function satisfying the condition $f(0)\leq 0 $. The condition $f(0)\geq 0 $ in the generalization proposed by Bellman was corrected by Olkin as $f(0) \leq 0 $. Bellman gave only a graphical proof for differentiable convex functions. In this paper, we give a mathematical proof for the generalized inequality including the importance of the condition $f(0)\leq 0$. We introduce a set $\mathcal{W}$ of functions so that functions in the intersection of $\mathcal{W}$ and the set of all convex functions are the ones that are desirable in the generalization. In addition, we give a proof of Szegö's inequality which applies to sums with odd number of terms.
