Abstract:When its diameter goes close to or below the wavelength of the guided light, an optical microfiber/nanofiber (MNF) exhibits favorable properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, and excellent mechanical strength, which offers plenty of choices for combining a variety of functionalized materials ranging from semiconductors and metals to laser dyes; opens up plenty of opportunities for developing microphotonic or nanophotonic devices; and inspires new opportunities for near-field optics, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:By means of high-temperature physical drawing, glasses can be directly drawn into subwavelength-or nanometer-diameter fibers. As-fabricated nanofibers show excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness for low-loss optical wave guiding, and may exhibit a series of interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, evanescent guidance and high waveguide dispersion. These fibers provide promising building blocks for photonic applications in optical communications, optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Micro/nanofibres (MNFs) are optical fibres with diameters close to or below the vacuum wavelength of visible or near-infrared light. Due to its wavelength- or sub-wavelength scale diameter and relatively large index contrast between the core and cladding, an MNF can offer engineerable waveguiding properties including optical confinement, fractional evanescent fields and surface intensity, which is very attractive to optical sensing on the micro and nanometer scale. In particular, the waveguided low-loss tightly confined large fractional evanescent fields, enabled by atomic level surface roughness and extraordinary geometric and material uniformity in a glass MNF, is one of its most prominent merits in realizing optical sensing with high sensitivity and great versatility. Meanwhile, the mesoporous matrix and small diameter of a polymer MNF, make it an excellent host fibre for functional materials for fast-response optical sensing. In this tutorial, we first introduce the basics of MNF optics and MNF optical sensors, and review the progress and current status of this field. Then, we discuss challenges and prospects of MNF sensors to some extent, with several clues for future studies. Finally, we conclude with a brief outlook for MNF optical sensors.

Abstract:▪ Abstract The development of microstructured optical fibers has led to the realization of many optical properties in fiber form that were not previously attainable. This chapter reviews the background to this work and overviews both the fundamentals of and progress in fabricating and modeling these structures. Until relatively recently, most of the work in this field was based on silica glass; this chapter provides an update on progress in developing microstructured fibers from other materials such as soft glasses. Some of the key applications of microstructured fibers, including nonlinear fiber–based devices and fibers for high power light delivery, are also reviewed.

Abstract:Microfibers with diameter ranging from several hundred nanometers to several micrometers have many advantages to make it an open platform for miniaturization and integration of fiber-optic devices.These advantages include large evanescent field,high nonlinearity,strong light confinement,great configurability and low-loss connection to other fiberized components.The functions and applications of microfibers can be greatly expanded by using various functional materials and microstructures,and harnessing the fruitful intrinsic nonlinearities.In particular,by integration of multiple functions in a single microfiber,lab on a fiber can be achieved.In this article,we summarize the recent progress in the microfibers research,covering fundamental characteristics of microfibers,implementation of several crucial devices,integration of external materials and applications of microfiber-based devices.
Parallel Fabrication of Silica Optical Microfibers and Nanofibers

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibers possess intriguing optical and mechanical properties. Recently, MNF array or MNFs with identical geometries have been attracting more and more attention, however, current fabrication technique can draw only one MNF at a time, with a low drawing speed (typically 0.1 mm/s) and a complicated process for high-precision control, making it inefficient in fabricating multiple MNFs. Here, we propose a parallel-fabrication approach to simultaneously drawing multiple (up to 20) MNFs with almost identical geometries. For fiber diameter larger than 500 nm, measured optical transmittances of all as-drawn MNFs exceed 96.7% at 1550-nm wavelength, with a diameter deviation within 5%. Our results pave a way towards high-yield fabrication of MNFs that may find applications from MNF-based optical sensors, optical manipulation to fiber-to-chip interconnection.

Abstract:We developed a procedure for the fabrication of functional micro-structured optical fibers (MOFs) through a selective filling technique. In this method, we selectively infiltrate the conventional silica MOF with a UV curable polymer and construct a mold for the fabrication of the functional MOF. Subsequently, we can build the functional MOF by introducing novel materials such as nonlinear optical polymers, nano-structures, and water-based solutions. Such functional MOFs can find wide applications in areas that include nonlinear optics, spectroscopy, chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:Optical microfibers drawn from conventional fibers have attracted considerable interests and have found many novel applications. Here, we review recent advances in ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers. Starting with characteristics and fabrication of optical microfibers, which are closely related to ultrafast fiber lasers, we show that characteristics of large portion of evanescent field, tailorable dispersion, high optical nonlinearity, very low optical loss and full compatibility with conventional fibers are greatly beneficial to novel ultrafast fiber lasers. We then highlight recent works on ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers in terms of fast saturable absorbers made from optical microfiber-supported nanomaterials, dispersion management and high optical nonlinearity, as well as some other novel ultrafast fiber lasers. Finally, we briefly discuss future opportunities for optical microfiber-based ultrafast fiber lasers, such as high-order dispersion management, nonlinearity management and applications for sensing and measurement.

Abstract:Fiber-based opto-fluidics with the distinct benefit of alignment-free optics has been a new rising area by integrating optical fiber and microfluidics in recent years. Optical microfibers with large accessible evanescent field and great configurability have more advantages on the integration with microfluidics than traditional fibers. Based on the strong light-liquid interaction, the fluid has the ability to modulate optical microfiber devices by changing physical and chemical properties such as refractive index, temperature, flow rate, chemicals dissolved in the fluid, etc. The light in the microfiber can also be used to manipulate particles which can move in the fluidic channel. Here we review the broad opto-fluidic applications of optical microfibers such as measurement of liquid characteristics, nonlinear effects, laser generation and optical manipulations with miniaturization, low cost, and high sensitivity. The microfiber-based microfluidic platform may provide more strategies for physical and chemical sensing applications and in particular contactless optical diagnostics.

Abstract:Microstructure optical fibers with flat-top fundamental mode are first proposed by introducing a low-index inner core into the core of index-guiding microstructure optical fibers. The design guidelines and characteristics of beam-shaping microstructure optical fibers are demonstrated. The interrelationships of inner-core index with laser wavelength, air hole diameter and size of inner core are investigated. The influence of the relative size of inner core on the spatial profile of the fundamental mode is demonstrated. Moreover, sensitivity of the flat-top fundamental mode profile from the slight change of the optimum inner-core index value is studied. Starting from these results we deduce that it is possible to fabricate beam-shaping microstructure fibers with nowadays technique.

Abstract:In this paper, a new class of optical fibers is studied, i.e. microstructured fibers or photonic crystal fibers (PCF). The main objective is to characterize these fibers using different dispersion diagrams and present an interface that enables calculation of various transverse indexes. The choice of these profiles was guided by a simplification achievement. Furthermore, in order to acquire expertise in air-silica microstructured fibers, a behavior modeling of these particular structures is proposed in this paper in order to present an analytical method based on empirical equations. The fibers treated in this paper have a triangular arrangement of holes corresponding to the natural arrangement of a bundle of cylindrical tubes around a central rod of the same diameter.

Abstract:Owing to their favorable properties including small sizes, tight optical confinement, large fractional evanescent fields, and low waveguiding losses, optical micro-/nanofibers have attracted broad research interest and technological applications in recent years, in which the precision in micro-/nanofiber fabrication is critical to determine their waveguiding properties and performances. Here, we firstly introduce the principles of high-temperature taper drawing of glass fibers. Next, we review typical fabrication methods including flame-heated manual drawing approach, flame-heated mechanical drawing technique, electric-heated mechanical drawing technique and laser-heated mechanical drawing technique. Cons and pros of the above-mentioned techniques are discussed, followed by a brief introduction to the fabrication of polymer micro-/nanofibers. Thirdly, we introduce the principle and techniques of high-precision diameter control in glass micro-/nanofiber fabrication based on a in-situ feedback from the cutoff of high-order waveguiding modes, which can offer a diameter precision down to nanometer level. In addition, several techniques for diameter measurement of a micro-/nanofiber are also introduced. Finally, we end the review with a brief summary in micro-/ nanofiber fabrication, as well as an outlook to future possibilities.

Abstract:Graded index microstructured polymer optical fiber incorporating a specially designed air-hole array featuring variable air-hole diameters and inter-hole separation is proposed, fabricated and characterized in view of the fiber potential applications in low-loss, low-dispersion terahertz guidance. The proposed fiber features simultaneously low chromatic and intermodal dispersions, as well as low loss in the terahertz spectral range. We then experimentally demonstrate that proposed fibers exhibit smaller pulse distortion, larger bandwidth and more reliable excitation when compared to the porous fibers of comparable geometry.

Abstract:With the development of laser technology, microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) have become an important part of ultrafast optics, providing excellent platforms for ultrafast laser pulse generation, amplification, and compression, promoting the development of fiber laser systems to generate high power, high pulse energy, and few-cycle duration pulses. MOFs extend the ultrafast laser spectrum to the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and even extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regions based on dispersive wave emission and high harmonic generation, as well as to the mid-infrared region based on soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS), contributing compact and low-cost light sources for precision microscopy and spectroscopy. In this paper, first several common types of MOFs are introduced, then the various applications of MOFs in ultrafast optics are discussed, mainly focusing on the aspects of ultrafast laser pulse scaling in pulse energy and spectral bandwidth, and finally the possible prospects of MOFs are given.
