Abstract:The partial Sobolev spaces with respect to a vector field are introduced, and are used to study minimization problems of the functionals which are degenerate in the sense that they do not have control on either the tangential part or the perpendicular part of the magnetic gradients. Based on these results we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the minimizers of the anisotropic Landau-de Gennes functional of smectic liquid crystals, as one of the anisotropy coefficients approaches to zero.

Abstract:In this article we first prove existence of minimizers of the Landau-de Gennes energy for liquid crystals with homogeneous external magnetic field and strong uniaxial planar anchoring. Next we consider the asymptotics of solutions to the joint minimization of the energy w.r.t. the function and its boundary condition. This constitutes a generalization to arbitrary regular particle shapes of the results obtained in [BLS2024] for $\lambda=\infty$. Moreover we show the absence of line singularities in some asymptotic parameter regimes. Finally we characterize the optimal orientation of particles vis-à-vis the magnetic field direction and compute it explicitly for different particle shapes.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Lagrangian problem including the variational reformulation, derived in a recent work of Ambrosio–Baradat–Brenier, of the discrete Monge–Ampère gravitational model, which describes the motion of interacting particles whose dynamics is ruled by the optimal transport problem. The more general action-type functional we consider contains a discontinuous potential term related to the descending slope of the opposite squared distance function from a generic discrete set in . We exploit the underlying geometrical structure provided by the associated Voronoi decomposition of the space to obtain -regularity for local minimizers out of a finite number of shock times.

Abstract:We study global minimizers of a continuum Landau-De Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions. We analyze the physically relevant limit of small elastic constant and show that global minimizers converge strongly, in $W^{1,2}$, to a global minimizer predicted by the Oseen-Frank theory for uniaxial nematic liquid crystals with constant order parameter. Moreover, the convergence is uniform in the interior of the domain, away from the singularities of the limiting Oseen-Frank global minimizer. We obtain results on the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues and the regularity of the eigenvectors of the Landau-De Gennes global minimizer. We also study the interplay between biaxiality and uniaxiality in Landau-De Gennes global energy minimizers and obtain estimates for various related quantities such as the biaxiality parameter and the size of admissible strongly biaxial regions.

Abstract:We study energy minimization of a continuum Landau-de Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in a three-dimensional axisymmetric domain and in a restricted class of S 1 -equivariant (i.e., axially symmetric) configurations. We assume smooth and nonvanishing S 1 -equivariant (e.g. homeotropic) Dirichlet boundary condition and a physically relevant norm constraint (the Lyuksyutov constraint) in the interior. Relying on our previous results in the nonsymmetric setting [16], we prove partial regularity of minimizers away from a possible finite set of interior singularities located on the symmetry axis. For a suitable class of domains and boundary data, we show that for smooth minimizers (torus solutions) the level sets of the signed biaxiality are generically finite unions of tori of revolution. Concerning nonsmooth minimizers (split solutions), we characterize their asymptotic behavior around any singular point in terms of explicit S 1 -equivariant harmonic maps into S 4 , whence the generic level sets of the signed biaxiality contains invariant topological spheres. Finally, in the model case of a nematic droplet, we provide existence of torus solutions, at least when the boundary data are suitable uniaxial deformations of the radial anchoring, and existence of split solutions for boundary data which are suitable linearly full harmonic spheres.

Landau-de Gennes model with sextic potentials: asymptotic behavior of minimizers

Abstract:We study a class of Landau-de Gennes energy functionals with a sextic bulk energy density in a three-dimensional domain. We examine the asymptotic behavior of uniformly bounded minimizers in two distinct scenarios: one where their energy remains uniformly bounded, and another where it logarithmically diverges as a function of the elastic constant. In the first case, we show that up to a subsequence, the minimizers converge to a locally minimizing harmonic map in both the $ H_{\loc}^1 $ and $ C_{\loc}^j, j\in \Z_+ $ norms within compact subsets that are distant from the singularities of the limit. For the second case, we establish the existence of a closed set denoted as $ \cS_{\op{line}} $. This set has finite length and consists of finite segments of lines locally such that the energy of minimizers are locally uniformly bounded away from it. This work solves an open question raised by Canevari (ARMA, 223 (2017), 591-676), specifically concerning point and line defects in the Landau-de Gennes model with sextic potentials.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the regularity of several notions of Lipschitz solutions to the minimal surface system with an emphasis on partial regularity results. These include stationary solutions, integral weak solutions, and viscosity solutions. We also prove an interior gradient estimate for classical solutions to the system using the maximum principle, assuming the area-decreasing condition and that all but one component have small norm.

Abstract:We study the behaviour of global minimizers of a continuum Landau–de Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional axially symmetric domains diffeomorphic to a ball (a nematic droplet) and in a restricted class of -equivariant configurations. It is known from our previous paper (Dipasquale et al. in J Funct Anal 286:110314, 2024) that, assuming smooth and uniaxial (e.g. homeotropic) boundary conditions and a physically relevant norm constraint in the interior (Lyuksyutov constraint), minimizing configurations are either of torus or of split type. Here, starting from a nematic droplet with the homeotropic boundary condition, we show how singular (split) solutions or smooth (torus) solutions (or even both) for the Euler–Lagrange equations do appear as energy minimizers by suitably deforming either the domain or the boundary data. As a consequence, we derive symmetry breaking results for the minimization among all competitors.

On a Divergence Penalized Landau-de Gennes Model

Abstract:We give a brief introduction to a divergence penalized Landau-de Gennes functional as a toy model for the study of nematic liquid crystal with colloid inclusion, in the case of unequal elastic constants. We assume that the nematic occupies the exterior of the unit ball, satisfies homeotropic anchoring at the surface of the colloid and approaches a uniform uniaxial state as $|x|\to\infty$. We study the "small particle" limit and obtain a representation formula for solutions to the associated Euler-Lagrange equations. We also present a numerical analysis of these equations based on a finite element approach and discuss the effect of the divergence penalization on the "Saturn ring" defects and on the properties of the $Q$-tensor.

The technique of A-harmonic approximation introduced by Simon and developed by Duzaar and Grotowski is adapted to our context. We establish Caccioppoli type inequalities and partial regularity with optimal local Holder exponents for horizontal gradients of weak solutions to systems under super-quadratic natural structure conditions and super-quadratic controllable structure conditions, respectively. Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 476-499, February 2024. Finding stationary states of Landau free energy functionals has to solve a nonconvex infinite-dimensional optimization problem. In this paper, we develop a Bregman distance based optimization method for minimizing a class of Landau energy functionals and focus on its convergence analysis in the function space. We first analyze the regularity of the stationary states and show the weakly sequential convergence results of the proposed method. Furthermore, under the Łojasiewicz–Simon property, we prove a strongly sequential convergent property and establish the local convergence rate in an appropriate Hilbert space. In particular, we analyze the Łojasiewicz exponent of three well-known Landau models, the Landau–Brazovskii, Lifshitz–Petrich, and Ohta–Kawasaki free energy functionals. Finally, numerical results support our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate partial regularity results for the so-called solutions to the "liquid crystals inequalities". These solutions essentially satisfy the incompressible condition as well as the local and global energy inequalities and the pressure equation which may be derived formally from the momentum conservation equations, but are not required to satisfy the simplified Ericksen–Leslie system (for the liquid crystal flows) itself. We prove that under an additional assumption on the orientation for any fixed value of a certain parameter , the solutions to the corresponding "liquid crystals inequalities", which may lack the maximum principle for , satisfy . Here, is the parabolic fractal dimension, is any compact set, and is the set of forward-sigular space-time points near which the solution blows-up forwards in time.

Abstract:We study some variational problems of the Landau-de Gennes functional under Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions, which describes phase transitions of liquid crystals. We investigate the effect of the parameters, especially the chirality and the wave number, on the behavior of the minimizers. In order to describe bifurcation of a smectic phase from a nematic phase we introduce the critical wave number Q c3 and give various estimates. We examine the behavior of minimizers with small chirality and large elastic coefficients.

Abstract:We consider almost minimizers to the one-phase energy functional and we prove their optimal Lipschitz regularity and partial regularity of their free boundary. These results were recently obtained by David and Toro, and David, Engelstein, and Toro. Our proofs provide a different method based on a non-infinitesimal notion of viscosity solutions.

Minimization of a Ginzburg-Landau functional with mean curvature operator in 1-D

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the minimization problem related to a Ginzburg-Landau energy functional, where in particular a nonlinear diffusion of mean curvature-type is considered, together with a classical double well potential. A careful analysis of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation, equipped with natural boundary conditions and mass constraint, leads to the existence of an unique Maxwell solution, namely a monotone increasing solution obtained for small diffusion and close to the so-called Maxwell point. Then, it is shown that this particular solution (and its reversal) has least energy among all the stationary points satisfying the given mass constraint. Moreover, as the viscosity parameter tends to zero, it converges to the increasing (decreasing for the reversal) single interface solution, namely the constrained minimizer of the corresponding energy without diffusion. Connections with Cahn-Hilliard models, obtained in terms of variational derivatives of the total free energy considered here, are also presented.

A new representation for the Landau-de Gennes energy of nematic liquid crystals

Abstract:In the Landau-de Gennes theory on nematic liquid crystals, the well-known Landau-de Gennes energy depends on four elastic constants; $L_1$, $L_2$, $L_3$, $L_4$. For the general case of $L_4\neq 0$, Ball-Majumdar \cite {BM} found an example that the Landau-de Gennes energy functional from physics literature \cite{MN} does not satisfy a coercivity condition, which causes a problem in mathematics to establish existence of energy minimizers. In order to solve this problem, we observe that the original third order term on $L_4$, proposed by Schiele and Trimper \cite{ST} in physics, is a linear combination of a fourth order term and a second order term. Therefore, we can propose a new Landau-de Gennes energy, which is equal to the original for uniaxial nematic $Q$-tensors. The new Landau-de Gennes energy with general elastic constants satisfies the coercivity condition for all $Q$-tensors, which establishes a new link between mathematical and physical theory. Similarly to the work of Majumdar-Zarnescu \cite{MZ}, we prove existence and convergence of minimizers of the new Landau-de Gennes energy. Moreover, we find a new way to study the limiting problem of the Landau-de Gennes system since the cross product method \cite{Chen} on the Ginzburg-Landau equation does not work for the Landau-de Gennes system.

Abstract:<p>We consider the "thin one-phase" free boundary problem, associated to minimizing a weighted Dirichlet energy of the function in plus the area of the positivity set of that function in . We establish full regularity of the free boundary for dimensions , prove almost everywhere regularity of the free boundary in arbitrary dimension, and provide content and structure estimates on the singular set of the free boundary when it exists. All of these results hold for the full range of the relevant weight.</p><p>While our results are typical for the calculus of variations, our approach does not follow the standard one first introduced by Alt and Caffarelli in 1981. Instead, the nonlocal nature of the distributional measure associated to a minimizer necessitates arguments that are less reliant on the underlying PDE. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.</p>

On regularity for Griffith almost-minimizers in the plane

Abstract:We present regularity results for the crack set of a minimizer for the Griffith fracture energy, arising in the variational modeling of brittle materials. In the planar setting, we prove an epsilon-regularity result showing that the crack is locally a $C^{1,1/2}$ curve outside of a singular set of zero Hausdorff measure. The main novelty is that, in contrast to previous results, no topological constraints on the crack are required. Afterwards, we show that the crack is uniformly rectifiable which in turn allows us to prove that the singular set has dimension strictly less than 1. The results also apply to almost-minimizers. As a byproduct, we prove higher integrability for the gradient of local minimizers of the Griffith energy, providing a positive answer to the analogue of De Giorgi's conjecture for the Mumford-Shah functional.
