Abstract:We give a brief introduction to a divergence penalized Landau-de Gennes functional as a toy model for the study of nematic liquid crystal with colloid inclusion, in the case of unequal elastic constants. We assume that the nematic occupies the exterior of the unit ball, satisfies homeotropic anchoring at the surface of the colloid and approaches a uniform uniaxial state as $|x|\to\infty$. We study the "small particle" limit and obtain a representation formula for solutions to the associated Euler-Lagrange equations. We also present a numerical analysis of these equations based on a finite element approach and discuss the effect of the divergence penalization on the "Saturn ring" defects and on the properties of the $Q$-tensor.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of studying defect structures in nematic liquid crystals around a spherical colloidal particle with different elastic constants. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to modify the Landau-de Gennes model by introducing a divergence penalty term in the small particle limit and explores the impact of this modification on the "Saturn ring" defects and the properties of the Q-tensor. ### Background and Motivation - **Nematic Liquid Crystals**: Nematic liquid crystals are a state of matter between liquids and solids, where the molecules are typically rod-like, axially symmetric, and maintain long-range orientational order throughout the sample. - **Effect of Colloidal Particles**: When colloidal particles are immersed in a nematic liquid crystal system, they disrupt the orientational order, forming topological defects that lead to self-assembly phenomena, which are significant in many applications. - **Boundary Conditions**: It is assumed that the liquid crystal occupies the space outside a unit sphere, with perpendicular anchoring conditions on the colloidal surface (i.e., the molecular orientation is perpendicular to the colloidal surface) and tends to a uniform uniaxial state far from the colloid. ### Research Methods - **Landau-de Gennes Model**: This model describes the orientational order of liquid crystals through the Q-tensor, which is a 3×3 real-valued symmetric traceless matrix. - **Energy Functional**: The energy functional considered includes a divergence penalty term and is of the form: \[ E(Q) = \int_{\Omega} \left( \frac{1}{2} |\nabla Q|^2 + \frac{k}{2} |\text{div} Q|^2 + \frac{1}{\xi^2} f_B(Q) \right) dx \] where \( k \) is a parameter related to the material's elastic constants, and \( \xi \) is inversely proportional to the particle radius. - **Euler-Lagrange Equations**: The corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are derived and solved numerically using the finite element method. ### Main Contributions - **Impact of Divergence Penalty Term**: The study investigates the effect of the divergence penalty term on the "Saturn ring" defects, finding that the size and shape of the defect region change with variations in \( k \). - **Numerical Analysis**: Numerical simulations using the finite element method are conducted, showing the Q-tensor and its defect structures for different values of \( k \). ### Conclusion - **Defect Structures**: "Saturn ring" defects around the colloid are observed for all tested values of \( k \). As \( k \) increases, the biaxial region of the Q-tensor expands. - **Decay Characteristics**: The decay characteristics of the difference between the Q-tensor and the far-field state \( |Q - Q_8| \) are not isotropic but vary with angle. In summary, the paper provides a detailed study of defect structures induced by colloidal particles in nematic liquid crystals by introducing a divergence penalty term and validates the theoretical predictions through numerical simulations. These results contribute to a better understanding of defect behavior in nematic liquid crystals and their potential impact in practical applications.
