Abstract:We introduce a diffuse-interface Landau-de Gennes free energy for free-boundary nematic liquid crystals (NLC) in three dimensions submerged in isotropic liquid, where a phase field is introduced to model the deformable interface. The energy we propose consists of the original Landau-de Gennes free energy, three penalty terms and a volume constraint. We prove the existence and regularity of minimizers to the diffuse-interface energy functional. We also prove a uniform maximum principle of the minimizer under appropriate assumptions, together with a uniqueness result for small domains. Then, we establish a sharp-interface limit where minimizers of the diffuse-interface energy converge to a minimizer of a sharp-interface energy under the framework of $\Gamma$-convergence. Finally, we conduct numerical experiments with the diffuse-interface model, the findings of which are compared with existing works.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of mathematical modeling and analysis of free boundary nematic liquid crystal (NLC) systems. Specifically, the authors propose a diffuse interface model based on the Landau-de Gennes theory to describe free boundary nematic liquid crystal systems in three-dimensional space. These systems are typically immersed in isotropic fluids and are simulated using the phase field method to model deformable interfaces. ### Main Research Questions: 1. **Construction of the Mathematical Model**: How to construct an energy functional that accurately describes the free boundary nematic liquid crystal system? The model needs to consider contributions from LdG free energy, mixing energy, anchoring energy, and cavitation energy. 2. **Proof of Mathematical Properties**: How to prove the existence of a minimum for the energy functional of the model, and that these minima have good regularity and uniqueness? 3. **Analysis of Interface Limits**: How to prove, using the Γ-convergence method, that as the diffusion parameter ε approaches 0, the solution of the diffuse interface model converges to the solution of a sharp interface model? 4. **Validation through Numerical Experiments**: How to validate the effectiveness of the model through numerical experiments and compare the results with those in existing literature? ### Specific Issues: - **Form of the Energy Functional**: Defined a diffuse interface energy functional \( E_\varepsilon \) that includes classical LdG free energy, mixing energy, anchoring energy, and cavitation energy. - **Existence and Regularity**: Proved the existence and regularity of the minima of \( E_\varepsilon \). - **Maximum Principle**: Under appropriate assumptions, proved the uniform maximum principle for the energy minima. - **Sharp Interface Limit**: Using the Γ-convergence method, proved that as \( \varepsilon \) approaches 0, the solution of the diffuse interface model converges to the solution of a sharp interface model. - **Numerical Experiments**: Conducted numerical experiments to validate the effectiveness of the model and compared the results with those in existing literature. ### Significance: - **Theoretical Contribution**: This study provides a new theoretical framework for the mathematical modeling of free boundary nematic liquid crystal systems, particularly combining the LdG theory and the diffuse interface method. - **Practical Application**: The model can be used to predict and analyze the behavior of nematic liquid crystals under different conditions, especially in industrial applications such as the design and optimization of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal displays. Through these studies, the authors hope to provide more comprehensive and accurate mathematical tools for the understanding and application of free boundary nematic liquid crystal systems.
