Abstract:Here, we introduce a new definition of regular point for piecewise-linear (PL) functions on combinatorial (PL triangulated) manifolds. This definition is given in terms of the restriction of the function to the link of the point. We show that our definition of regularity is distinct from other definitions that exist in the combinatorial topology literature. Next, we stratify the Jacobi set/critical locus of such a map as a poset stratified space. As an application, we consider the Reeb space of a PL function, stratify the Reeb space as well as the target of the function, and show that the Stein factorization is a map of stratified spaces.

A Decomposition Theorem for Herman Maps

Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

From Samples to Persistent Stratified Homotopy Types

Abstract:The natural occurrence of singular spaces in applications has led to recent investigations on performing topological data analysis (TDA) in a stratified framework. In many applications, there is no a priori information on what points should be regarded as singular or regular. For this purpose we describe a fully implementable process that provably approximates the stratification for a large class of two-strata Whitney stratified spaces from sufficiently close non-stratified samples. Additionally, in this work, we establish a notion of persistent stratified homotopy type obtained from a sample with two strata. In analogy to the non-stratified applications in TDA which rely on a series of convenient properties of (persistent) homotopy types of sufficiently regular spaces, we show that our persistent stratified homotopy type behaves much like its non-stratified counterpart and exhibits many properties (such as stability, and inference results) necessary for an application in TDA. In total, our results combine to a sampling theorem guaranteeing the (approximate) inference of (persistent) stratified homotopy types of sufficiently regular two-strata Whitney stratified spaces.

Abstract:We describe a new algorithm for computing Whitney stratifications of complex projective varieties. The main ingredients are (a) an algebraic criterion, due to Lê and Teissier, which reformulates Whitney regularity in terms of conormal spaces and maps, and (b) a new interpretation of this conormal criterion via ideal saturations, which can be practically implemented on a computer. We show that this algorithm improves upon the existing state of the art by several orders of magnitude, even for relatively small input varieties. En route, we introduce related algorithms for efficiently stratifying affine varieties, flags on a given variety, and algebraic maps.

Presenting the topological stratified homotopy hypothesis

Abstract:This article is concerned with three different homotopy theories of stratified spaces: The one defined by Douteau and Henriques, the one defined by Haine, and the one defined by Nand-Lal. One of the central questions concerning these theories has been how precisely they connect with geometric and topological examples of stratified spaces, such as piecewise linear pseudomanifolds, Whitney stratified spaces, or more recently Ayala, Francis and Tanaka's conically smooth stratified spaces. More precisely, so far, it has been an open question whether there exist (semi)model structures on stratified topological spaces that present these theories, in which such relevant examples of stratified spaces are bifibrant. Here, we prove an affirmative answer to this question. As a consequence, we obtain a model categorical interpretation of a stratified homotopy hypothesis. Specifically, we show that Lurie's stratified singular simplicial set functor induces a Quillen equivalence between the semimodel category of stratified topological spaces presenting Nand-Lal's homotopy theory of stratified spaces and the left Bousfield localization of the Joyal model structure that corresponds to such $\infty$-categories in which every endomorphism is an isomorphism. We then perform a detailed investigation of bifibrant objects in these model structures of stratified spaces, proving a series of detection criteria and illuminating the relationship to Quinn's homotopically stratified spaces.

Abstract:We give the definition of the Thom condition and we show that given any germ of complex analytic function $f:(X,x)\to(\mathbb{C},0)$ on a complex analytic space $X$, there exists a geometric local monodromy without fixed points, provided that $f\in\mathfrak m_{X,x}^2$, where $\mathfrak m_{X,x}$ is the maximal ideal of $\mathcal O_{X,x}$. This result generalizes a well-known theorem of the second named author when $X$ is smooth and proves a statement by Tibar in his PhD thesis. It also implies the A'Campo theorem that the Lefschetz number of the monodromy is equal to zero. Moreover, we give an application to the case that $X$ has maximal rectified homotopical depth at $x$ and show that a family of such functions with isolated critical points and constant total Milnor number has no coalescing of singularities.

Topological Bordism of Singular Spaces and an Application to Stratified L-Classes

Abstract:A generalized-homology bordism-theory is constructed, such that for certain manifold homotopy stratified sets (MHSS; Quinn-spaces) homeomorphism-invariant geometric fundamental-classes exist. The construction combines three ideas: Firstly, instead of restricting geometric cycles by conditions on links only, a more flexible framework is built directly via geometric properties, secondly, controlled topology methods are used to give an accessible link-based criterion to detect suitable cycles and thirdly, a geometric argument is used to show, that these classes of cycles are suitable to study the transition to intrinsic stratifications. As an application, we give a construction of topologically (homeomorphism) invariant (homological) L-classes on MHSS Witt-spaces satisfying conditions on Whitehead-groups of links and the dimensional spacing of meeting strata. These L-classes agree, whenever those spaces are additionally pl-pseudomanifolds, with the Goresky-MacPherson L-classes.

Abstract:Classical results of Milnor, Wood, Mather, and Thurston produce flat connections in surprising places. The Milnor-Wood inequality is for circle bundles over surfaces, whereas the Mather-Thurston Theorem is about cobording general manifold bundles to ones admitting a flat connection. The surprise comes from the close encounter with obstructions from Chern-Weyl theory and other smooth obstructions such as the Bott classes and the Godbillion-Vey invariant. Contradiction is avoided because the structure groups for the positive results are larger than required for the obstructions, e.g. $\operatorname{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ versus $\operatorname{U}(1)$ in the former case and $C^1$ versus $C^2$ in the latter. This paper adds two types of control strengthening the positive results: In many cases we are able to (1) refine the Mather-Thurston cobordism to a semi-$s$-cobordism (ssc) and (2) provide detail about how, and to what extent, transition functions must wander from an initial, small, structure group into a larger one. The motivation is to lay mathematical foundations for a physical program. The philosophy is that living in the IR we cannot expect to know, for a given bundle, if it has curvature or is flat, because we can't resolve the fine scale topology which may be present in the base, introduced by a ssc, nor minute symmetry violating distortions of the fiber. Small scale, UV, "distortions" of the base topology and structure group allow flat connections to simulate curvature at larger scales. The goal is to find a duality under which curvature terms, such as Maxwell's $F \wedge F^\ast$ and Hilbert's $\int R\ dvol$ are replaced by an action which measures such "distortions." In this view, curvature results from renormalizing a discrete, group theoretic, structure.

Abstract:We give a complete description of which non-torsion generators are not in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to integral cohomology for the classifying space of exceptional Lie groups except for E_8. We then show that the Thom morphism is not surjective for the classifying space of the gauge group of a principal E_7-bundle over the four-dimensional sphere. We use the results to detect nontrivial elements in the kernel of the reduced Thom morphism for Lie groups and their classifying spaces.

Locally approximating groups of homeomorphisms of manifolds

Abstract:Let $M$ be a compact, connected manifold of positive dimension and let $\mathcal G\leq\textrm{Homeo}(M)$ be \emph{locally approximating} in the sense that for all open $U\subseteq M$ compactly contained in a single Euclidean chart of $M$, the subgroup $\mathcal G[U]$ consisting of elements of $\mathcal G$ supported in $U$ is dense in the full group of homeomorphisms supported in $U$. We prove that $\mathcal G$ interprets first order arithmetic, as well as a first order predicate that encodes membership in finitely generated subgroups of $\mathcal G$. As a consequence, we show that if $\mathcal G$ is not finitely generated, then no group elementarily equivalent to $\mathcal G$ can be finitely generated. We show that many finitely generated locally approximating groups of homeomorphisms $\mathcal G$ of a manifold are prime models of their theories, and give conditions that guarantee any finitely presented group $G$ that is elementarily equivalent to $\mathcal G$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal G$. We thus recover some results of Lasserre about the model theory of Thompson's groups $F$ and $T$. Finally, we obtain several action rigidity result for locally approximating groups of homeomorphisms. If $\mathcal G$ acts in a locally approximating way on a compact, connected manifold $M$ then the dimension of $M$ is uniquely determined by the elementary equivalence class of $\mathcal G$. Moreover, if $\dim M\leq 3$ then $M$ is uniquely determined up to homeomorphism. In for general closed smooth manifolds, the homotopy type of $M$ is uniquely determined. In this way, we obtain a generalization of a well-known result of Rubin.

Critically fixed Thurston maps: classification, recognition, and twisting

Abstract:An orientation-preserving branched covering map $f\colon S^2 \to S^2$ is called a critically fixed Thurston map if $f$ fixes each of its critical points. It was recently shown that there is an explicit one-to-one correspondence between Möbius conjugacy classes of critically fixed rational maps and isomorphism classes of planar embedded connected graphs. In the paper, we generalize this result to the whole family of critically fixed Thurston maps. Namely, we show that each critically fixed Thurston map $f$ is obtained by applying the blow-up operation, introduced by Kevin Pilgrim and Tan Lei, to a pair $(G,\varphi)$, where $G$ is a planar embedded graph in $S^2$ without isolated vertices and $\varphi$ is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of $S^2$ that fixes each vertex of $G$. This result allows us to provide a classification of combinatorial equivalence classes of critically fixed Thurston maps. We also develop an algorithm that reconstructs (up to isotopy) the pair $(G,\varphi)$ associated with a critically fixed Thurston map $f$. Finally, we solve some special instances of the twisting problem for the family of critically fixed Thurston maps obtained by blowing up pairs $(G, \mathrm{id}_{S^2})$.

Abstract:We prove a formula for Thom polynomials of Morin (or A_d) singularities in any codimension. We use a combination of the test-curve method of Porteous, and the localization methods in equivariant cohomology. Our formulas are independent of the codimension, and they are computationally efficient for d less than 7.

Abstract:Implementing an idea due to John Baez and James Dolan we define new invariants of Whitney stratified manifolds by considering the homotopy theory of smooth transversal maps. To each Whitney stratified manifold we assign transversal homotopy monoids, one for each natural number. The assignment is functorial for a natural class of maps which we call stratified normal submersions. When the stratification is trivial the transversal homotopy monoids are isomorphic to the usual homotopy groups. We compute some simple examples and explore the elementary properties of these invariants. We also assign `higher invariants', the transversal homotopy categories, to each Whitney stratified manifold. These have a rich structure; they are rigid monoidal categories for n>1 and ribbon categories for n>2. As an example we show that the transversal homotopy categories of a sphere, stratified by a point and its complement, are equivalent to categories of framed tangles.
Stratifications associated to reductive group actions on affine spaces

Abstract:For a complex reductive group G acting linearly on a complex affine space V with respect to a character, we show two stratifications of V associated to this action (and a choice of invariant inner product on the Lie algebra of the maximal compact subgroup of G) coincide. The first is Hesselink's stratification by adapted 1-parameter subgroups and the second is the Morse theoretic stratification associated to the norm square of the moment map. We also give a proof of a version of the Kempf-Ness theorem which states that the GIT quotient is homeomorphic to the symplectic reduction (both taken with respect to the character). Finally, for the space of representations of a quiver of fixed dimension, we show that the Morse theoretic stratification and Hesselink's stratification coincide with the stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types.

Stratification of Projection Maps From Toric Varieties

Abstract:We prove a combinatorial version of Thom's Isotopy Lemma for projection maps applied to any complex or real toric variety. Our results are constructive and give rise to a method for associating the Whitney strata of the projection to the faces of the polytope of the corresponding toric variety. For all examples we produced, our resulting algorithm outperforms known general purpose methods in Helmer and Nanda (FoCM, 2022), and Dinh and Jelonek (DCG, 2021) for computing map-stratifications.

Abstract:We develop the theory of stratification for a rigidly-compactly generated tensor-triangulated category using the smashing spectrum and the small smashing support. Within the stratified context, we investigate connections between big prime ideals, objectwise-prime ideals and homological primes, and we show that the Telescope Conjecture holds if and only if the homological spectrum is $T_0$ and the homological support detects vanishing. We also reduce stratification to smashing localizations. Moreover, we study induced maps between smashing spectra and prove a descent theorem for stratification. Outside the stratified context, we prove that the Telescope Conjecture holds if and only if the smashing spectrum is $T_0$ with respect to the small topology.

Abstract:We show that Thurston’s skinning maps of Teichmüller space have finite fibers. The proof centers around a study of two subvarieties of the SL2(C)$${{\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})}$$ character variety of a surface—one associated with complex projective structures, and the other associated with a 3-manifold. Using the Morgan–Shalen compactification of the character variety and author’s results on holonomy limits of complex projective structures, we show that these subvarieties have only a discrete set of intersections.Along the way, we introduce a natural stratified Kähler metric on the space of holomorphic quadratic differentials on a Riemann surface and show that it is symplectomorphic to the space of measured foliations. Mirzakhani has used this symplectomorphism to show that the Hubbard–Masur function is constant; we include a proof of this result. We also generalize Floyd’s theorem on the space of boundary curves of incompressible, boundary-incompressible surfaces to a statement about extending group actions on Λ$${\Lambda}$$ -trees.
