Abstract:Consider the Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group on a transversely symplectic foliation which satisfies the transverse hard Lefschetz property. We establish an equivariant formality theorem and an equivariant symplectic d delta-lemma in this setting. As an application, we show that if the foliation is also Riemannian, then there exists a natural formal Frobenius manifold structure on the equivariant basic cohomology of the foliation.

Abstract:We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.

Abstract:It is well known that, by the Reeb stability theorem, the leaf space of a Riemannian foliation with compact leaves is an orbifold. We prove that, under mild completeness conditions, the leaf space of a Killing Riemannian foliation is a diffeological quasifold: as a diffeological space, it is locally modelled by quotients of Cartesian space by countable groups acting affinely. Furthermore, we prove that the holonomy groupoid of the foliation is, locally, Morita equivalent to the action groupoid of a countable group acting affinely on Cartesian space.

Equivariant Morse theory for Lie algebra actions on Riemannian foliations

Abstract:Consider the transverse isometric action of a finite dimensional Lie algebra g on a Riemannian foliation. This paper studies the equivariant Morse-Bott theory on the leaf space of the Riemannian foliations in this setting. Among other things, we establish a foliated version of the Morse-Bott lemma for a g-invariant basic Morse-Bott function, and a foliated version of the usual handle presentation theorem. In the non-equivariant case, we apply these results to present a new proof of the Morse inequalities on Riemannian foliations. In the equivariant case, we apply these results to study Hamiltonian action of an abelian Lie algebra on a presymplectic manifold whose underlying foliation is also Riemannian, and extend the Kirwan surjectivity and injectivity theorem in equivariant symplectic geometry to this situation. Among other things, this implies the Kirwan surjectivity and injectivity hold for Hamiltonian torus actions on symplectic orbifolds.

Abstract:We prove several vanishing theorems for a class of generalized elliptic genera on foliated manifolds, by using classical equivariant index theory. The main techniques are the use of the Jacobi theta-functions and the construction of a new class of elliptic operators associated to foliations.

Abstract:We introduce geometric quantization for constant rank presymplectic structures with Riemannian null foliation and compact leaf closure space. We prove a quantization-commutes-with-reduction theorem in this context. Examples related to symplectic toric quasi-folds, suspensions of isometric actions of discrete groups, and K-contact manifolds are discussed.

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop symplectic Hodge theory on transversely symplectic foliations. In particular, we establish the symplectic dδ-lemma for any such foliations with the (transverse) s-Lefschetz property. As transversely symplectic foliations include many geometric structures, such as contact manifolds, co-symplectic manifolds, symplectic orbifolds, and symplectic quasi-folds as special examples, our work provides a unifying treatment of symplectic Hodge theory in these geometries. As an application, we show that on compact K-contact manifolds, the s-Lefschetz property implies a general result on the vanishing of cup products, and that the cup length of a 2n + 1 dimensional compact Kcontact manifold with the (transverse) s-Lefschetz property is at most 2n − s. For any even integer s ≥ 2, we also apply our main result to produce examples of K-contact manifolds that are s-Lefschetz but not (s+1)Lefschetz.

Abstract:Let X be a Stein manifold of complex dimension endowed with a Riemannian metric . We show that for every integer k with there is a nonsingular holomorphic foliation of dimension k on X all of whose leaves are closed and -complete. The same is true if provided that there is a complex vector bundle epimorphism . We also show that if is a proper holomorphic foliation on then for any Riemannian metric on there is a holomorphic automorphism of such that the image foliation is -complete. The analogous result is obtained on every Stein manifold with Varolin's density property.

Abstract:We give the definition of the Thom condition and we show that given any germ of complex analytic function $f:(X,x)\to(\mathbb{C},0)$ on a complex analytic space $X$, there exists a geometric local monodromy without fixed points, provided that $f\in\mathfrak m_{X,x}^2$, where $\mathfrak m_{X,x}$ is the maximal ideal of $\mathcal O_{X,x}$. This result generalizes a well-known theorem of the second named author when $X$ is smooth and proves a statement by Tibar in his PhD thesis. It also implies the A'Campo theorem that the Lefschetz number of the monodromy is equal to zero. Moreover, we give an application to the case that $X$ has maximal rectified homotopical depth at $x$ and show that a family of such functions with isolated critical points and constant total Milnor number has no coalescing of singularities.

Abstract:We show that a singular Riemannian foliation of codimension two on a compact simply-connected Riemannian $(n+2)$-manifold, with regular leaves homeomorphic to the $n$-torus, is given by a smooth effective $n$-torus action. This solves in the negative for the codimension $2$ case a question about the existence of foliations by exotic tori on simply-connected manifolds.

Abstract:R. Thom's gradient conjecture states that if a gradient flow of an analytic function converges to a limit, it does so along a unique limiting direction. In this paper, we extend and settle this conjecture in the context of infinite dimensional problems. Building on the foundational works of Łojasiewicz, L. Simon, and the resolution of the conjecture for finite dimensional cases by Kurdyka-Mostowski-Parusinski, we focus on nonlinear evolutions on Riemannian manifolds as studied by L. Simon. This framework includes geometric PDEs such as minimal surface, harmonic map, mean curvature flow, and normalized Yamabe flow. Our main result not only confirms the uniqueness of the limiting direction but also characterizes the rate of convergence and possible limiting directions for both classical and infinite dimensional settings.

Taut foliations and contact pairs in dimension three

Abstract:We present a new construction of codimension-one foliations from pairs of contact structures in dimension three. This constitutes a converse result to a celebrated theorem of Eliashberg and Thurston on approximations of foliations by contact structures. Under suitable hypotheses on the initial contact pairs, the foliations we construct are taut, allowing us to characterize taut foliations entirely in terms of contact geometry. This viewpoint reveals some surprising flexible phenomena for taut foliations, and provides new insight into the $L$-space conjecture.

Abstract:A singular foliation is a partition of a manifold into leaves of perhaps varying dimension. Stefan and Sussmann carried out fundamental work on singular foliations in the 1970s. We survey their contributions, show how diffeological objects and ideas arise naturally in this setting, and highlight some consequences within diffeology. We then introduce a definition of transverse equivalence of singular foliations, following Molino's definition for regular foliations. We show that, whereas transverse equivalent singular foliations always have diffeologically diffeomorphic leaf spaces, the converse holds only for certain classes of singular foliations. We finish by showing that the basic cohomology of a singular foliation is invariant under transverse equivalence.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop $L^2$ theory for Riemannian and Hermitian foliations on manifolds with basic boundary. We establish a decomposition theorem, various vanishing theorems, a twisted duality theorem for basic cohomologies and an extension theorem for basic forms of induced Riemannian foliation on the boundary. We prove the complex analogues for Hermitian foliations. To show the Dolbeault decomposition of basic forms, we extend Morrey's basic estimate to foliation version. We also investigate the global regularity for $\bar{\partial}_B$-equations.
