Abstract:The Thom polynomial of a singularity $\eta$ expresses the cohomology class of the $\eta$-singularity locus of a map in terms of the map's simple invariants. In this informal survey -- based on two lectures given at the Isaac Newton Institute in 2024 -- we explore various Thom polynomial concepts with examples.

Abstract:We prove a formula for Thom polynomials of Morin (or A_d) singularities in any codimension. We use a combination of the test-curve method of Porteous, and the localization methods in equivariant cohomology. Our formulas are independent of the codimension, and they are computationally efficient for d less than 7.

Universal polynomials for multi-singularity loci of maps

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove the existence of universal polynomials which express multi-singularity loci classes of prescribed types for proper morphisms between smooth schemes over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero -- we call them Thom polynomials for multi-singularity types of maps. It has been referred to as the Thom-Kazarian principle and unsolved for a long time. This result solidifies the foundation for a general enumerative theory of singularities of maps which is applicable to a broad range of problems in classical and modern algebraic geometry. In particular, it would contribute to a satisfactory answer to the rest of (an advanced form of) Hilbert's 15th problem and connect such classics to recent new interests in enumerations inspired by mathematical physics and other fields. A main feature of our proof is a striking use of algebro-geometric cohomology operations. Somewhat surprisingly, when trying to grasp a full perspective of classical enumerative geometry, we will inevitably encounter algebraic cobordism and motivic cohomology.

Abstract:We give the definition of the Thom condition and we show that given any germ of complex analytic function $f:(X,x)\to(\mathbb{C},0)$ on a complex analytic space $X$, there exists a geometric local monodromy without fixed points, provided that $f\in\mathfrak m_{X,x}^2$, where $\mathfrak m_{X,x}$ is the maximal ideal of $\mathcal O_{X,x}$. This result generalizes a well-known theorem of the second named author when $X$ is smooth and proves a statement by Tibar in his PhD thesis. It also implies the A'Campo theorem that the Lefschetz number of the monodromy is equal to zero. Moreover, we give an application to the case that $X$ has maximal rectified homotopical depth at $x$ and show that a family of such functions with isolated critical points and constant total Milnor number has no coalescing of singularities.

On coincidences of singular loci of types $Σ^{1_r}$ and $Σ^r$

Abstract:It is well-known that the Thom polynomial in Stiefel--Whitney classes expressing the cohomology class dual to the locus of the cusp singularity for codimension-$k$ maps $\Sigma^{1_2}(k)$ and that of the corank-$2$ singularity for codimension-$(k-1)$ maps $\Sigma^2(k-1)$ coincide: both are $w_{k+1}^2 + w_k w_{k+2}$. The aim of the present paper is to find out whether there is any geometric explanation to this seemingly mysterious coincidence. We thank László Fehér for posing us this interesting question that we answer here to the positive, and motivated by it we search for further similar coincidences of the loci of $\Sigma^{1_r}$-type and $\Sigma^r$-type singular points for a general $r$, but found such ones only for special classes of maps. Finally we compute the cohomology classes dual to the singularity strata for any Morin map. (This result--for holomorphic maps--was presented by Kazarian but the proof was left unpublished.)

Abstract:The existence of a good theory of Thom isomorphisms in some rational category of mixed Tate motives would permit a nice interpolation between ideas of Kontsevich on deformation quantization, and ideas of Connes and Kreimer on a Galois theory of renormalization, mediated by Deligne's ideas on motivic Galois groups.

Abstract:By constructing concrete complex-oriented maps we show that the eight-fold of the generator of the third integral cohomology of the spin groups Spin(7) and Spin(8) is in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to singular cohomology, while the generator itself is not in the image. We thereby give a geometric construction for a nontrivial class in the kernel of the differential Thom morphism of Hopkins and Singer for the Lie groups Spin(7) and Spin(8). The construction exploits the special symmetries of the octonions.

Abstract:Green and Griffiths have introduced several notions of singularities associated with normal functions, especially in connection with middle dimensional primitive Hodge classes. In this note, by using the more elementary aspects of the Decomposition Theorem, we define global and local singularities associated with primitive middle dimensional cohomology classes and by using the Relative Hard Lefschetz Theorem, we show that these singularities detect the global and local triviality of the primitive class. In a final section, we write-up a classical inductive argument relating the Hodge conjecture to the local non-vanishing of primitive classes.

On a canonical polynomial for links of elliptic singularities

Abstract:The canonical polynomial is an important output of the multivariable topological Poincaré series associated with a normal surface singularity. It can be considered as a multivariable polynomial generalization of the Seiberg--Witten invariant of the link. In the case of elliptic germs, another key topological invariant was considered, the elliptic sequence, which mirrors the specific structure of the elliptic germs and guides several properties of them. In this note we study the relationship of these two objects. First of all, we describe the structure of the exponents of the canonical polynomial and prove that they determine the elliptic sequence. For the converse problem, we consider an inductive setup of elliptic germs via natural extension of their graphs and compare the corresponding sets of exponents. This leads to the definition of a good extension which can be characterized by an inclusion type formula for the corresponding canonical polynomials. This reflects in a compatible way the `flag structure' of the elliptic sequence.

On Motivic and Arithmetic Refinements of Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Abstract:In recent years, a version of enumerative geometry over arbitrary fields has been developed and studied by Kass-Wickelgren, Levine, and others, in which the counts obtained are not integers but quadratic forms. Aiming to understand the relation to other "refined invariants", and especially their possible interpretation in quantum theory, we explain how to obtain a quadratic version of Donaldson-Thomas invariants from the motivic invariants defined in the work of Kontsevich and Soibelman and pose some questions. We calculate these invariants in a few simple examples that provide standard tests for these questions, including degree zero invariants of $\mathbb A^3$ and higher-genus Gopakumar-Vafa invariants recently studied by Liu and Ruan. The comparison with known real and complex counts plays a central role throughout.

Abstract:In this article, we produce Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formulas for cohomology theories that are not oriented in the classical sense. We then specialize to the case of cohomology theories that admit a so-called symplectic orientation and show how to compute the relevant Todd classes in that situation. At the end of the article, we illustrate our methods on the Borel character linking Hermitian K-theory and rational MW-motivic cohomology.

Abstract:The Hodge bundle $\omega$ over a modular curve is a square-root of the canonical bundle twisted by the cuspidal divisor, or a theta characteristic, due to the Kodaira--Spencer isomorphism. We prove that, in most cases, a section of a theta characteristic $\nu$ (or any odd power of it) different from $\omega$ is a noncongruence modular form. On the other hand, we show how $\nu\ne\omega$ gives rise to a ``twisted'' analogue of the diagonal period map to a Siegel threefold, whose difference attributes to the stackiness of the moduli of abelian surfaces $\mathcal{A}_{2}$. Some questions on the Brill--Noether theory of the modular curves are answered.

A note on the Thom morphism for the classifying space of certain Lie groups and gauge groups

Abstract:We give a complete description of which non-torsion generators are not in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to integral cohomology for the classifying space of exceptional Lie groups except for E_8. We then show that the Thom morphism is not surjective for the classifying space of the gauge group of a principal E_7-bundle over the four-dimensional sphere. We use the results to detect nontrivial elements in the kernel of the reduced Thom morphism for Lie groups and their classifying spaces.

Abstract:We introduce `canonical' classes in the Selmer groups of certain Galois representations with a conjugate-symplectic symmetry. They are images of special cycles in unitary Shimura varieties, and defined uniquely up to a scalar. The construction is a slight refinement of one of Y. Liu, based on the conjectural modularity of Kudla's theta series of special cycles. For 2-dimensional representations, Theta cycles are (the Selmer images of) Heegner points. In general, they conjecturally exhibit an analogous strong relation with the Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjectures in rank 1, for which we gather the available evidence.

Abstract:We classify transcendental entire functions that are compositions of a polynomial and the exponential for which all singular values escape on disjoint rays. The construction involves an iteration procedure on an infinite-dimensional Teichmüller space, analogously to the Thurston's classical Topological Characterization of Rational Functions, but for an infinite set of marked points.

Abstract:Block and Göttsche introduced a Laurent polynomial multiplicity to count tropical curves. Itenberg and Mikhalkin then showed that this multiplicity leads to invariant counts called tropical refined invariants. Recently, Brugallé and Jaramillo-Puentes studied the polynomiality properties of the coefficients of these invariants and showed that for fixed genus g, the coefficients ultimately coincide with polynomials in the homology class of the curves we look at. We call the generating series of these polynomials asymptotic refined invariant. In genus 0, the asymptotic refined invariant has been computed by the second author in the h-transverse case.

Polynomials in homotopy type theory as a Kleisli category

Abstract:Polynomials in a category have been studied as a generalization of the traditional notion in mathematics. Their construction has recently been extended to higher groupoids, as formalized in homotopy type theory, by Finster, Mimram, Lucas and Seiller, thus resulting in a cartesian closed bicategory. We refine and extend their work in multiple directions. We begin by generalizing the construction of the free symmetric monoid monad on types in order to handle arities in an arbitrary universe. Then, we extend this monad to the (wild) category of spans of types, and thus to a comonad by self-duality. Finally, we show that the resulting Kleisli category is equivalent to the traditional category of polynomials. This thus establishes polynomials as a (homotopical) model of linear logic. In fact, we explain that it is closely related to a bicategorical model of differential linear logic introduced by Melliès.

Abstract:The primitive cohomology of the theta divisor of a principally polarized abelian variety of dimension $g$ is a Hodge structure of level $g-3$. The Hodge conjecture predicts that it is contained in the image, under the Abel-Jacobi map, of the cohomology of a family of curves in the theta divisor. In this paper we use the Prym map to show that this version of the Hodge conjecture is true for the theta divisor of a general abelian fivefold.

Triangulated characterizations of singularities

Abstract:This work presents a range of triangulated characterizations for important classes of singularities such as derived splinters, rational singularities, and Du Bois singularities. An invariant called 'level' in a triangulated category can be used to measure the failure of a variety to have a prescribed singularity type. We provide explicit computations of this invariant for reduced Nagata schemes of Krull dimension one and for affine cones over smooth projective hypersurfaces. Furthermore, these computations are utilized to produce upper bounds for Rouquier dimension on the respective bounded derived categories.

Abstract:We begin with modular form periods, a focal point of several Yuri Manin's works. The similarity is discussed between the corresponding zeta-polynomials and superpolynomials of algebraic links, closely related to Khovanov-Rozansky polynomials. We focus on DAHA superpolynomials and motivic ones, defined via compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities and their counterparts in arbitrary ranks; the non-unibranch construction is new. They conjecturally coincide with the corresponding generalizations of L-functions and satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis in some sectors of the parameters. Presumably, the motivic ones an be interpreted as certain partition functions of Landau-Ginzburg models associated with plane curve singularities; RH for them is remarkably similar to the Lee-Yang circle theorem for Ising models. A q,t-deformation of the Witten index is obtained as an application. General perspectives of the motivic theory of isolated curve and surface singularities are discussed, including possible implications in number theory. Also, we introduce super-analogs of $\rho_{ab}$-invariants and discuss super-deformations of the Riemann's zeta. Among other topics: Verlinde algebras, and the topological vertex.
