Abstract:Leonardo’s mathematical notes bear witness to a work in progress and allow us to look directly into the mind of the writer. In Leonardo we find two of the three fundamental classical geometric problems: the duplication of the cube and the quadrature of the circle. While Leonardo is extremely familiar with two-dimensional geometry problems, and proposes playful graphic exercises of adding and subtracting polygonal surfaces of all kinds, he is still unable to solve the problem of the duplication of the cube. Numerous pages testify of the attempt to rise above planar geometry and reach the realm of the third dimension, but Leonardo always bumps against the limits of quantity calculation possibilities of his age.

Abstract:Fermat's Last Theorem is proved by using the philosophical and mathematical knowledge of 1637 when the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat claimed to have a truly marvelous proof of his conjecture. Our approach consists of setting three variables of Fermat's equation as integers and then evaluating whether the remaining variable can be an integer as well. Pythagorean triples play a fundamental role in claiming that at least an irrational number is needed to satisfy Fermat's equation. As a result, we confirm that Fermat's Last Theorem is valid.

Abstract:This work contains two papers: the first published in 2022 and entitled "On the nature of some Euler's double equations equivalent to Fermat's last theorem" provides a marvellous proof through the so-called discordant forms of appropriate Euler's double equations, which could have entered in a not very narrow margin and the second instead published in 2024 and entitled "Some Diophantus-Fermat double equations equivalent to Frey's elliptic curve" provides the possible proof, which Fermat has not published in detail, but which uses the characteristic of all right-angled triangles with sides equal to whole numbers, or the famous Pythagorean identity. Some explanations in session(III) are provided: the first makes evident the nature of the "proof a' la Fermat" and the subsequent sessions clarify the direct and interesting connection of the two elementary proofs and it is necessary if you want to understand how two different elementary proofs of Fermat's Last Theorem are possible. It must be observed that those proofs must in no way be interpreted as a sort of absurd revenge of elementary number theory over more modern analytic and algebraic treatments.The author himself has added a section in which he connects his concepts with some of those used by Wiles in his complex demonstration.This implies that, to a certain extent, Wiles' demonstration inspired the author of those works. Ultimately in this paper we will illustrate how only thanks to some of Euler's discoveries was it possible to shed light on the so-called too narrow margin never written by Fermat. For this reason we will also provide some details on an article that was the real inspiration for achieving these results (see Last Conclusions).

Abstract:In his treatise addressed to Dositheus of Pelusium, Archimedes of Syracuse obtained the result of which he was the most proud: a sphere has two-thirds the volume of its circumscribing cylinder. At his request a sculpted sphere and cylinder were placed on his tomb near Syracuse. Usually, it is admitted that to find this formula, Archimedes used a half polygon inscribed in a semicircle; then he performed rotations of these two figures to obtain a set of trunks in a sphere. This set of trunks allowed him to determine the volume. In our opinion, Archimedes was so clever that he found the proof with shorter demonstration. Archimedes did not need to know $\pi$ to prove the result and the Pythagorean theorem was probably the key to the proof.

Abstract:We provide an alternative unified approach for proving the Pythagorean theorem (in dimension $2$ and higher), the law of sines and the law of cosines, based on the concept of shape derivative. The idea behind the proofs is very simple: we translate a triangle along a specific direction and compute the resulting change in area. Equating the change in area to zero yields the statements of the three aforementioned theorems.

Abstract:A direct proof of the Steiner-Lehmus theorem has eluded geometers for over 170 years. The challenge has been that a proof is only considered direct if it does not rely on reductio ad absurdum. Thus, any proof that claims to be direct must show, going back to the axioms, that all of the auxiliary theorems used are also proved directly. In this paper, we give a proof of the Steiner-Lehmus theorem that is guaranteed to be direct. The evidence for this claim is derived from our methodology: we have formalized a constructive axiom set for Euclidean plane geometry in a proof assistant that implements a constructive logic and have built the proof of the Steiner-Lehmus theorem on this constructive foundation.

The missing proof of Paley's theorem about lacunary coefficients

Abstract:We modify the standard proof of Paley's theorem about lacunary coefficients of functions in $H^1$ to work without analytic factorization. This leads to the first direct proof of the extension of Paley's theorem that we applied to the former Littlewood conjecture about $L^1$ norms of exponential sums.

Abstract:We use Herbrand's theorem to give a new proof that Euclid's parallel axiom is not derivable from the other axioms of first-order Euclidean geometry. Previous proofs involve constructing models of non-Euclidean geometry. Abstract:We show how the birth of perspective painting in the Italian Renaissance led to a new way of interpreting space that resulted in the creation of projective geometry. Unlike other works on this subject, we explicitly show how the craft of the painters implied the introduction of new points and lines (points and lines at infinity) and their projective coordinates to complete the Euclidean space to what is now called projective space. We demonstrate this idea by looking at original paintings from the Renaissance, and by carrying out the explicit analytic calculations that underpin those masterpieces.
