Abstract:We show that attaching a whisker (or a pendant) at the vertices of a cycle cover of a graph results in a new graph with the following property: all symbolic powers of its cover ideal are Koszul or, equivalently, componentwise linear. This extends previous work where the whiskers were added to all vertices or to the vertices of a vertex cover of the graph.

Abstract:In this paper we study monomial cycles in Koszul homology over a monomial ring. The main result is that a monomial cycle is a boundary precisely when the monomial representing that cycle is contained in an ideal we introduce called the boundary ideal. As a consequence, we obtain necessary ideal-theoretic conditions for a monomial ideal to be Golod. We classify Golod monomial ideals in four variables in terms of these conditions. We further apply these conditions to symmetric monomial ideals, allowing us to classify Golod ideals generated by the permutations of one monomial. Lastly, we show that a class of ideals with linear quotients admit a basis for Koszul homology consisting of monomial cycles. This class includes the famous case of stable monomial ideals as well as new cases, such as symmetric shifted ideals.

Abstract:Polarization is a powerful technique in algebra which provides combinatorial tools to study algebraic invariants of monomial ideals. We study the reverse of this process, depolarization which leads to a family of ideals which share many common features with the original ideal. Given a squarefree monomial ideal, we describe a combinatorial method to obtain all its depolarizations, and we highlight their similar properties such as the graded Betti numbers. We show that even though they have many similar properties, their differences in dimension make them distinguishable in applications in system reliability theory. In particular, we apply polarization and depolarization tools to study the reliability of multistate coherent systems via binary systems and vice versa. We use depolarization as a tool to reduce the dimension and the number of variables in coherent systems.

Abstract:A major open question in the theory of Gorenstein liaison is whether or not every arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^n$ can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Migliore and Nagel showed that, if such a scheme is generically Gorenstein (e.g., reduced), then, after re-embedding so that it is viewed as a subscheme of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$, indeed it can be G-linked to a complete intersection. Motivated by this result, we consider techniques for constructing G-links on a scheme from G-links on a closely related reduced scheme. Polarization is a tool for producing a squarefree monomial ideal from an arbitrary monomial ideal. Basic double G-links on squarefree monomial ideals can be induced from vertex decompositions of their Stanley-Reisner complexes. Given a monomial ideal $I$ and a vertex decomposition of the Stanley-Reisner complex of its polarization $\mathcal{P}(I)$, we give conditions that allow for the lifting of an associated basic double G-link of $\mathcal{P}(I)$ to a basic double G-link of $I$ itself. We use the relationship we develop in the process to show that the Stanley-Reisner complexes of polarizations of artinian monomial ideals and of stable Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals are vertex decomposable, recovering and strengthening the recent result of Fløystad and Mafi that these complexes are shellable. We then introduce and study polarization of a Gröbner basis of an arbitrary homogeneous ideal and give a relationship between geometric vertex decomposition of a polarization and elementary G-biliaison that is analogous to our result on vertex decomposition and basic double G-linkage.

Abstract:Let $I(G)^{[k]}$ denote the $k^{th}$ square-free power of the edge ideal $I(G)$ of a graph $G$. In this article, we provide a precise formula for the depth of $I(G)^{[k]}$ when $G$ is a Cohen-Macaulay forest. Using this, we show that for a Cohen-Macaulay forest $G$, the $k^{th}$ square-free power of $I(G)$ is always Cohen-Macaulay, which is quite surprising since all ordinary powers of $I(G)$ can never be Cohen-Macaulay unless $G$ is a disjoint union of edges. Next, we give an exact formula for the regularity and tight bounds on the depth of square-free powers of edge ideals of cycles. In the case of whiskered cycles, we obtain tight bounds on the regularity and depth of square-free powers, which aids in identifying when such ideals have linear resolutions. Additionally, we compute depth of $I(G)^{[2]}$ when $G$ is a cycle or whiskered cycle, and regularity of $I(G)^{[2]}$ when $G$ is a whiskered cycle.

Abstract:We show that the KZ system has a topological interpretation in the sense that it may be understood as a variation of complex mixed Hodge structure whose successive pure weight quotients are polarized. This in a sense completes and elucidates work of Schechtman-Varchenko done in the early 1990's. A central ingredient is a. new realization of the irreducible highest weight representations of a Lie algebra of Kac-Moody type, namely on an algebra of rational polydifferentials on a countable product of Riemann spheres. We also obtain the kind of properties that in the sl(2) case are due to Ramadas and are then known to imply the unitarity of the WZW system in genus zero.
A Representation theoretic perspective of Koszul theory

Abstract:We discover a new connection between Koszul theory and representation theory. Let $\La$ be a quadratic algebra defined by a locally finite quiver with relations. Firstly, we give a combinatorial description of the local Koszul complexes and the quadratic dual $\La^!$, which enables us to describe the linear projective resolutions and the colinear injective coresolutions of graded simple $\La$-modules in terms of $\La^!$. As applications, we obtain a new class of Koszul algebras and a stronger version of the Extension Conjecture for finite dimensional Koszul algebras with a noetherian Koszul dual. Then we construct two Koszul functors, which induce a $2$-real-parameter family of pairs of derived Koszul functors between categories derived from graded $\La$-modules and those derived from graded $\La^!$-modules. In case $\La$ is Koszul, each pair of derived Koszul functors are mutually quasi-inverse, one of the pairs is Beilinson, Ginzburg and Soergel's Koszul duality. If $\La$ and $\La^!$ are locally bounded on opposite sides, then the Koszul functors induce two equivalences of bounded derived categories: one for finitely piece-supported graded modules, and one for finite dimensional graded modules. And if $\La$ and $\La^!$ are both locally bounded, then the bounded derived category of finite dimensional graded $\La$-modules has almost split triangles with the Auslander-Reiten translations and the Serre functors given by composites of derived Koszul functors.

Powers of Edge Ideals with Linear Quotients

Abstract:We prove that the powers of an edge ideal with linear quotients must also have linear quotients by employing a novel, easily implementable ordering of the minimal generators. As a consequence, we give explicit formulas for the projective dimension and Betti numbers of the edge ideals of whisker graphs. We also prove that second and higher powers of the edge ideals of anticycles admit linear quotient orderings, thus resolving an open question of Hoefel and Whieldon in the affirmative.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that the coordinate ring of the pinched Veronese (i.e $k[X^3,X^2Y,XY^2,Y^3,X^2Z,Y^2Z,XZ^2,YZ^2,Z^3]\subset k[X,Y,Z]$) is Koszul. The strategy of the proof is the following: we can consider a presentation $S/I$ where $S=k[X_1,...,X_9]$. Using a distinguished weight $\omega$, it's enough to show that $S/in_{\omega}I$ is Koszul. We write $in_{\omega}I$ as $J+H$ where $J$ is generated by a Gröbner basis of quadrics. Finally, we present an extension of the notion of Koszul filtration and we use it to show that $(J+H)/J$ has a linear free resolution over $S/J.$ This implies the Koszulness of $S/I.$

Abstract:The paper deals with two notions: polarized partition relations and product of generalized strong sequences. Strong sequences were introduced by Efimov in 1965 as a usefull tool for proving famous theorems in dyadic spaces, i.e. continuous images of Cantor cube. In this paper we introduce the notion of product of generalized strong sequences and give pure combinatorial proof that existence of product of generalized strong sequences is equivalent to polarized partition relations.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a semisimple ring. A pair $(A,C)$ is called almost-Koszul if $A$ is a connected graded $R$-ring and $C$ is a compatible connected graded $R$-coring. To an almost-Koszul pair one associates three chain complexes and three cochain complexes such that one of them is exact if and only if the others are so. In this situation $(A,C)$ is said to be Koszul. One proves that a connected $R$-ring $A$ is Koszul if and only if there is a connected $R$-coring $C$ such that $(A,C)$ is Koszul. This result allows us to investigate the Hochschild (co)homology of Koszul rings. We apply our method to show that the twisted tensor product of two Koszul rings is Koszul. More examples and applications of Koszul pairs, including a generalization of Fröberg Theorem, are discussed in the last part of the paper.

Abstract:Kontsevich designed a scheme to generate infinitesimal symmetries $\dot{\mathcal{P}} = \mathcal{Q}(\mathcal{P})$ of Poisson brackets $\mathcal{P}$ on all affine manifolds $M^r$; every such deformation is encoded by oriented graphs on $n+2$ vertices and $2n$ edges. In particular, these symmetries can be obtained by orienting sums of non-oriented graphs $\gamma$ on $n$ vertices and $2n-2$ edges. The bi-vector flow $\dot{\mathcal{P}} = \text{Or}(\gamma)(\mathcal{P})$ preserves the space of Poisson structures if $\gamma$ is a cocycle with respect to the vertex-expanding differential in the graph complex. A class of such cocycles $\boldsymbol{\gamma}_{2\ell+1}$ is known to exist: marked by $\ell \in \mathbb{N}$, each of them contains a $(2\ell+1)$-gon wheel with a nonzero coefficient. At $\ell=1$ the tetrahedron $\boldsymbol{\gamma}_3$ itself is a cocycle; at $\ell=2$ the Kontsevich--Willwacher pentagon-wheel cocycle $\boldsymbol{\gamma}_5$ consists of two graphs. We reconstruct the symmetry $\mathcal{Q}_5(\mathcal{P}) = \text{Or}(\boldsymbol{\gamma}_5)(\mathcal{P})$ and verify that $\mathcal{Q}_5$ is a Poisson cocycle indeed: $[\![\mathcal{P},\mathcal{Q}_5(\mathcal{P})]\!]\doteq 0$ via $[\![\mathcal{P},\mathcal{P}]\!]=0$.

Abstract:In this paper we give a new characterization of the dual polar graphs, extending the work of Brouwer and Wilbrink on regular near polygons. Also as a consequence of our characterization we confirm a conjecture of the authors on non-bipartite distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at most − k / 2 , where k is the valency of the distance-regular graph, in the case where c 2 ≥ 3 and a 1 = 1 .

Abstract:A graph $G$ is said to be an $(s, k)$-polar graph if its vertex set admits a partition $(A, B)$ such that $A$ and $B$ induce, respectively, a complete $s$-partite graph and the disjoint union of at most $k$ complete graphs. Polar graphs and monopolar graphs are defined as $(\infty, \infty)$- and $(1, \infty)$-polar graphs, respectively, and unipolar graphs are those graphs with a polar partition $(A, B)$ such that $A$ is a clique. The problems of deciding whether an arbitrary graph is a polar graph or a monopolar graph are known to be NP-complete. In contrast, deciding whether a graph is a unipolar graph can be done in polynomial time. In this work we prove that the three previous problems can be solved in linear time on the classes of $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible graphs, generalizing analogous results previously known for cographs. Additionally, we provide finite forbidden subgraph characterizations for $(2,2)$-polar graphs on $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible graphs, also generalizing analogous results recently obtained for the class of cographs.

Abstract:We discuss the space VPS ( Q , H ) of ideals with Hilbert function H=(1,n,n,...) that are apolar to a full rank quadric Q . We prove that its components of saturated ideals are closely related to the locus of Gorenstein algebras and to the Slip component in border apolarity. We also point out an important error in [ Citation 20 ] and provide the necessary corrections.
