However, there are some issues regarding parallel converter systems, such as surge currents that nonfaulty converters experience after faults, fault-isolation time, and load voltage distortion. To address these issues, this paper investigates the fault analysis and fault-tolerant design regarding parallel inverter systems. The stage analysis for the parallel inverter systems in the case of insulated-gate bipolar transistor short-circuit failures is performed first. Then, the surge current and the corresponding fault-isolation duration are explored. Furthermore, a mathematical model is built to address these two issues, and a fault-tolerant design to suppress surge current is presented. Finally, the experimental results are provided.

Abstract:The CADS (China Accelerator Driven Subcritical System) project is a strategic plan to solve the nuclear waste and resource problems for nuclear energy in China.The CADS driver linac is defined to deliver a CW proton beam of 15 MW in beam power.To meet the extremely high reliability and availability for high power accelerator, it is very important and imperative to perform robust design and redundancy for element failures.For robust design we give the baseline design of accelerator with reasonable and deliberate rules, meanwhile beam loss control is the most important and critical issues at the design process, so detailed error study and mismatch study have been proposed.For redundancy study the failure effects of key elements such as RF cavities and focusing elements in different locations along the linac have been studied and the schemes of compensation by the local compensation-rematch method have been proposed.Local compensation-rematch method and global compensation-rematch method have been discussed.At the last part of this paper the beam commissioning of CADS injector-I will be presented and the injector-I have got 10.67 MeV and 10.6 mA beam.

Abstract:FPGAs are currently being used in many applications due to their flexibility and re-programmability. Some of these applications operate in harsh environments. One such environment is space. Focusing on space applications, these FPGAs are subjected to soft and hard faults. For newer technology nodes, in addition to the harsh space environment, these errors are more severe. This paper investigates several fault-tolerant architectures to mitigate Single Event Upsets (SEUs), Double Event Upsets (DEUs), Triple Event Upsets (TEUs) as well as hard faults. Conventionally, for TEUs, seven copies of a module are required (7MR). Therefore, a modified 7MR architecture is studied along with two other architectures with six redundant modules: a modified 6MR architecture and a modified Triple Duplex architecture. Using Continuous Time Markov Chains (CTMCs), it is proven that, in many of the cases studied in this article, the modified Triple Duplex architecture has a higher reliability than the modified 7MR architecture. This is a counter-intuitive result. It is also proven that the modified 6MR architecture always has a lower reliability than the modified Triple Duplex architecture even though they both require six redundant modules. The ratio between the relative rates of SEUs, DEUs and TEUs plays an important role in determining the most reliable architecture. Furthermore, the Xilinx Vivado tool with the Kintex7, 7k410tfbg676 device is used to implement the modified 7MR and modified Triple Duplex voters to estimate the area and power consumed by these techniques.

Abstract:This paper describes an experimental tool to evaluate and support the development of fault tolerant machines designed for aerospace motor drives. Aerospace applications involve essentially safety critical systems which should be able to overcome hardware or software faults and therefore need to be fault tolerant. A way of achieving this is to introduce variable degrees of redundancy into the system by duplicating one or all of the operations within the system itself. Looking at motor drives, multiphase machines such as multiphase brushless DC machines are considered to be good candidates in the design of fault tolerant aerospace motor drives. The paper introduces a multi-phase two level inverter using a flexible and reliable FPGA/DSP controller for data acquisition, motor control and fault monitoring to study the fault tolerance of such systems.
MYRRHA, a Pb-Bi experimental ADS: specific approach to radiation protection aspects

Abstract:Since 1998, SCK*CEN, in partnership with IBA s.a. and many European research laboratories, is designing a multipurpose accelerator driven system (ADS) for Research and Development (R&D) applications-MYRRHA-and is conducting an associated R&D support programme. MYRRHA is an ADS under development at Mol in Belgium and is aiming to serve as a basis for the European experimental ADS to provide protons and neutrons for various R&D applications. It consists of a proton accelerator delivering a 350 MeV x 5 mA proton beam to a liquid Pb-Bi spallation target that in turn couples to a Pb-Bi cooled, subcritical fast core. In the first stage, the project focuses mainly on demonstration of the ADS concept, safety research on sub-critical systems and nuclear waste transmutation studies. In a later stage, the device will also be dedicated to research on structural materials, nuclear fuel, liquid metal technology and associated aspects, and on sub-critical reactor physics. Subsequently, it will be used for research on applications such as radioisotope production. A first preliminary conceptual design file of MYRRHA was completed by the end of 2001 and has been reviewed by an International Technical Guidance Committee, which concluded that there are no show stoppers in the project and even though some topics such as the safety studies and the fuel qualification need to be addressed more deeply before concluding it. In this paper, we are reporting on the state-of-the art of the MYRRHA project at the beginning of 2004 and in particular on the radiation shielding assessment and the radiation protection particular aspects through a remote handling operation approach in order to minimise the personnel exposure to radiation.
Inherent Safety Characteristics of Lead Bismuth Eutectic-Cooled Accelerator Driven Subcritical Systems

Abstract:An accelerator driven subcritical system (ADS) is a new nuclear energy system which could not only produce clean energy but also incinerate nuclear waste. In this paper, inherent safety analysis of an ADS is performed with neutronics and thermal-hydraulics coupled code named ARTAP. Five typical accidents are carried out, including the cases of proton beam interruption, transient overpower, reactivity insertion, loss of flow, and loss of heat sink. The transient simulations are performed in the average channel and the hottest channel of the fuel pin in the ADS core. The simulation results for beam interruption show that the highest temperature of the pellet is in the middle of the fuel element in the average channel, while the peak temperature of the cladding is in the top of the fuel element. After the beam is interrupted for 20s, the maximum temperature drops at the fuel center, the cladding inner surface, and the outlet coolant in the hottest channel are 644.46K, 162.27K, and 136.42K respectively. For transient overpower accidents with the increase of beam intensity, the maximum temperature of the fuel and the cladding are below the safety limit. Concerning the reactivity insertion accident, it is found that the ADS has good inherent safety and its margin of criticality safety is large. The calculation results for loss of flow show that the power drop is small due to low sensitivity of the subcritical core to negative reactivity feedback, and the maximum temperature of the cladding reaches 1726K, which means the fuel element would rupture. However, the power and the temperatures of fuel, cladding, and coolant could decrease quickly to the safety level after the proton accelerator is cut off under a loss of flow accident. The results also show that the peak temperature of the cladding is lower than the safety limit under a loss of heat sink accident. The present simulation results reveal that the ADS has a remarkable advantage against severe accidents. It also implies that its inherent safety characteristics could ensure reactor shutdown by cutting off the proton beam after accidents occur.

Abstract:In this paper, preliminary safety studies on the 800MWth accelerator-driven system (ADS) proposed by Xi’an Jiaotong university are presented. The system is a pool type facility coupling a proton accelerator with current in the range of 17 to 23mA and a sub-critical core by means of a spallation target. Here, the RELAP5/MOD3.3 code is selected as a base tool and to meet the requirement of ADS analysis, the point kinetics model is modified and the property of lead-bismuth is implemented. The paper focuses on the assessment of its response to the loss of flow events, the former is originated from the failure of the pump and the latter derives from the significant flow blockage at a fuel assembly inlet. The reactivity insertion accidents are caused by the change of the proton beam current. The results show that the safety and criteria are satisfied and the system is tolerant to the loss of flow accidents and proton beam doubled accident and is sensitive to the external neutron changing.

Abstract:Fault-tolerant systems play an important role in aircraft safety design. In this article, several three-level fault-tolerant inverter topologies are quantitative analysed in terms of their reliability. The reliability analysis will be investigated within the framework of a multi-state system (MSS) model. The distribution probability of the semiconductor failure types (open-& short-circuit) will be taken into account in the analysis. Cosmic radiation is highlighted and evaluated as an important failure mechanism.

Abstract:At the Centre for Proton Therapy at the Paul Scherrer Institute cancer patients are treated with a fixed beamline and in two gantries for ocular and non-ocular malignancies, respectively. For the installation of a third gantry a new patient safety system (PaSS) was developed and is sequentially being rolled out to update the existing areas. The aim of PaSS is to interrupt the treatment whenever any sub-system detects a hazardous condition. To ensure correct treatment delivery, this system needs to be thoroughly tested as part of the regular quality assurance (QA) protocols as well as after any upgrade. In the legacy safety systems, unit testing required an extensive use of resources: two weeks of work per area in the laboratory in addition to QA beam time. In order to significantly reduce the time, an automated PaSS test stand for unit testing was developed based on a PXI chassis with virtually unlimited IOs that are synchronously stimulated or sampled at 1 MHz. It can emulate the rest of the facility using adapters to connect each type of interface. With it PaSS can be tested under arbitrary conditions. A VHDL-based formal language was developed to describe stimuli, expected behaviour and specific measurements, interpreted by a LabView runtime environment. This article describes the tools and methodology being applied for unit testing and QA release tests for the new PaSS. It shows how automation and formalization made possible an increase in test coverage while significantly cutting down the laboratory testing time and facility's beam usage.

Abstract:An accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) program was launched in China in 2011, which aims to design and build an ADS demonstration facility with the capability of more than 1000 MW thermal power in multiple phases lasting about 20 years. The driver linac is defined to be 1.5 GeV in energy, 10 mA in current and in cw operation mode. To meet the extremely high reliability and availability, the linac is designed with much installed margin and fault tolerance, including hot-spare injectors and local compensation method for key element failures. The accelerator complex consists of two parallel 10-MeV injectors, a joint medium-energy beam transport line, a main linac, and a high-energy beam transport line. The superconducting acceleration structures are employed except for the radio frequency quadrupole accelerators (RFQs) which are at room temperature. The general design considerations and the beam dynamics design of the driver linac complex are presented here.

Abstract:Fault tolerance is increasingly being use to design Dependable Digital Systems (DDS), which refers to the capability of a system to keep performing its intended functions in existence of faults. DDS are typically used in Safety-critical system (SCS) such as medical (I&C) devices, Nuclear power Plants (I&C) devices and Aerospace (I&C) systems, the failure in these systems can cause harm to environment, death, injury to people. Different fault tolerance techniques were developed to overcome these issues and that has led to increase the reliability and dependability of applications on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In this paper, multiple related works are present dealing with different types of faults and fault tolerance methods in FPGA based systems. Furthermore, a comparison between the evaluation metrics of previous works of Fault Tolerant (FT) techniques like hardware redundancy overhead, time delay, reliability, and performance are also present.

Abstract:The Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) is a 4th generation diffraction-limited soft x-ray radiation source, consisting of a new accumulator ring (AR) and a new storage ring (SR). In both rings coupling-impedance driven instabilities need careful evaluation to ensure meeting the machine's high-performance goals. This paper presents the workflow followed in building the impedance models and the beam-stability analysis based on those models. We follow the commonly accepted approach of separating the resistive-wall and the geometric parts of the impedance; the former is obtained by analytical formulas, the latter by numerical electro-magnetic codes (primarily CST Studio software) with perfectly-conducting boundary conditions.Impedance budgets are established and pseudo-Green functions calculated to be used in beam dynamics studies. We also present various ways to cross-check simulation results for reliable impedance modeling. Finally, the crucial single-bunch instability current thresholds for various operation modes are determined and discussed.

Abstract:We are concerned with assuring the reliability of semiconductor lasers intended for an application in which the design lifetime is long, replacement or redundancy is impossible or impractical, and the failure of even a few lasers could be disastrous. In the search for a reliability assurance strategy that will meet our objectives, we have carefully examined the well‐known and widely used bathtub and lognormal approaches. Based upon our understanding of the expected aging behavior of lasers, we propose an alternative reliability assurance strategy that we believe to be an improvement over the traditional approaches. The object is not how to make reliable lasers, but rather how to confidently predict, in a timely fashion, which lasers in a given population will endure beyond the intended system lifetime. Particular emphasis is placed upon initially imposed overstress regimes that address the anticipated presence of transient modes of degradation and infant failure modes with low thermal activation energies that may be invulnerable to detection during accelerated thermal aging. Since lasers degrade gradually rather than fail suddenly, comparable emphasis is placed upon monitoring the stabilized long‐term degradation rates of the survivors of the overstress regimes so as to permit lifetime predictions of individual lasers.

A Novel Fault-Tolerance Design Model for Automatic Synthesis of Circuit Robust to Unknown Fault

Abstract:Analog circuits are indispensable in many electronic system design, as fundament. Considering accuracy and stability of circuit, fault-tolerance design is of great significance. For the lack of automatic design of fault-tolerant analog circuit robust to unknown fault, this paper presents a fault-tolerance design process with two steps: standard design and fault-tolerant design. A novel fault-tolerance design model and three fault-models are proposed. An Ultra-Wideband Highpass Filter satisfying RF design specification is designed as a case study. Experimental results shows that, the tolerant-circuit performs relatively robust compared with Butterworth highpass filter and standard-design circuit. The two-steps fault-tolerance design process is successfully used to design fault-tolerant analog circuit robust unknown fault.

Abstract:Software fault tolerance mechanisms aim at improving the reliability of software systems. Their effectiveness (i.e., reliability impact) is highly application-specific and depends on the overall system architecture and usage profile. When examining multiple architecture configurations, such as in software product lines, it is a complex and error-prone task to include fault tolerance mechanisms effectively. Existing approaches for reliability analysis of software architectures either do not support modelling fault tolerance mechanisms or are not designed for an efficient evaluation of multiple architecture variants. We present a novel approach to analyse the effect of software fault tolerance mechanisms in varying architecture configurations. We have validated the approach in multiple case studies, including a large-scale industrial system, demonstrating its ability to support architecture design, and its robustness against imprecise input data.
Redundancy or Gaas? Two Different Approaches to Solve the Problem of Seu (single Event Upset) in A Digital Optical Link.

Abstract:The fast digital optical links for the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter must survive in a high radiation environment with a total fluence of 3x10 neutrons (1MeV Si)/cm and 10 kGy (Si). The links based on Agilent Technologies Glink serializer/deserializer set, show a total dose radiation resistance to neutrons and gammas that would allow for 10 years of operation in the ATLAS detector. We have observed, however, an unacceptable rate of single event upsets (SEU) due to neutrons interacting in the silicon-based serializer. In order to solve this problem, we have developed two link systems. The first one, Dual-Glink, is based on a principle of redundancy: data are sent on two independent links. On the reception side, data are analyzed and error recovery is performed without dead time. The second solution uses a GaAs serializer/deserializer set from TriQuint. We observe a very small number of SEU’s. In addition, high speed of 2.5 Gb/s allows for transmission of the data twice during one event period and for error recovery. The design of the 3 types of links, their performance in the laboratory and the results of the radiation tests are presented for all systems.
