Abstract:In this paper, we rigorously justify the connection between the Qian--Sheng inertial $Q$-tensor model and the full Ericksen--Leslie model for the liquid crystal flow. By using the Hilbert expansion method, we prove that when the elastic coefficients tend to zero (also called the uniaxial limit), the solution to the Qian--Sheng inertial model will converge to the solution to the full inertial Ericksen--Leslie system.

Abstract:We prove the existence and uniqueness of local in time strong solutions to the full Ericksen-Leslie system in a bounded domain in R 3 , with strong anchoring boundary condition for the director field.The proof consists of three main steps: first, we introduce a new equivalent formulation of the system, which together with the boundary condition ensures the nonlinear constraint that |n| " 1.Second, based on this new formulation, we establish the well-posedness of the linearized system and show that the nonlinear operator induced by the stress tensor terms is locally Lipschitz continuous.These results together with a fixed point argument lead to the existence of a local in time solution of the new system.Third, the hydrodynamic component of the coupled system can be reformulated as a quasi-stationary Stokes-type equation.Subsequently, we can apply the regularity theory of the generalized Stokes system and employ a bootstrap argument to improve the spatial regularity of the local in time solution.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the role of Parodi’s relation in the well-posedness and stability of the general Ericksen–Leslie system modeling nematic liquid crystal flows. First, we give a formal physical derivation of the Ericksen–Leslie system through an appropriate energy variational approach under Parodi’s relation, in which we can distinguish the conservative/dissipative parts of the induced elastic stress. Next, we prove global well-posedness and long-time behavior of the Ericksen–Leslie system under the assumption that the viscosity μ 4 is sufficiently large. Finally, under Parodi’s relation, we show the global well-posedness and Lyapunov stability for the Ericksen–Leslie system near local energy minimizers. The connection between Parodi’s relation and linear stability of the Ericksen–Leslie system is also discussed.

Abstract:We study Ericksen--Leslie's hyperbolic incompressible liquid crystal model. Under some constraints on the Leslie coefficients which ensure the basic energy law is dissipative, we prove the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of the classical solution to the system with finite initial energy. Furthermore, with an additional assumption on the coefficients which provides a damping effect, and the smallness of the initial energy, the unique global classical solution can be established.

Abstract:We study dissipative solutions to a 3D simplified hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system for liquid crystals with Ginzburg-Landau approximation. First, we establish a weak-strong stability principle, which leads to a suitable notion of dissipative solutions to the hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system. Then, we introduce a regularized system to approximate the original system, for which we can prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions. Finally, we prove that there is at least one dissipative solution for this simplified hyperbolic Ericksen-Leslie system.

Instead of the Ginzburg–Landau approximation, we construct an approximate system with the dissipated energy based on a new formulation of the system.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the three dimensional general Ericksen-Leslie (E-L) system with Ginzburg-Landau type approximation modeling nematic liquid crystal flows. First, by overcoming the difficulties from lack of maximum principle for the director equation and high order nonlinearities for the stress tensor, we prove existence of global-in-time weak solutions under physically meaningful boundary conditions and suitable assumptions on the Leslie coefficients, which ensures that the total energy of the E-L system is dissipated. Moreover, for the E-L system with periodic boundary conditions, we prove the local well-posedness of classical solutions under the so-called Parodi's relation and establish a blow-up criterion in terms of the temporal integral of both the maximum norm of the curl of the velocity field and the maximum norm of the gradient of the liquid crystal director field. Abstract:The Doi kinetic theory for homogeneous flows of rodlike liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) is extended to inhomogeneous flows through introducing a nonlocal intermolecular potential. An extra term in the form of an elastic body force comes out as a result of this extension. Systematic asympototic analysis in the small Deborah number limit is carried out, and the classical Ericksen- Leslie equations are derived in this limit. The Leslie coefficients are derived in terms of molecular parameters, and the Ericksen stress emerges from the body force.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the rigorous connections between the inertial Qian--Sheng model and the Ericksen--Leslie model for the liquid crystal flow, under a more general condition of coefficients. More specifically, in the framework of Hilbert expansions, we show that: (i) when the elastic coefficients tend to zero (also called the uniaxial limit), the smooth solution to the inertial Qian--Sheng model converges to that to the full inertial Ericksen--Leslie model; (ii) when the elastic coefficients and the inertial coefficient tend to zero simultaneously, the smooth solution to the inertial Qian--Sheng model converges to that to the noninertial Ericksen--Leslie model.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish the regularity theorem for suitable weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in dimensions two. Building on such a regularity, we then establish the existence of a global weak solution to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\mathbb R^2$ for any initial data in the energy space, under the physical constraint conditions on the Leslie coefficients ensuring the dissipation of energy of the system, which is smooth away from at most finitely many times. This extends earlier works by Lin,Lin, and Wang on a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in dimensions two.

A new representation for the Landau-de Gennes energy of nematic liquid crystals

Abstract:In the Landau-de Gennes theory on nematic liquid crystals, the well-known Landau-de Gennes energy depends on four elastic constants; $L_1$, $L_2$, $L_3$, $L_4$. For the general case of $L_4\neq 0$, Ball-Majumdar \cite {BM} found an example that the Landau-de Gennes energy functional from physics literature \cite{MN} does not satisfy a coercivity condition, which causes a problem in mathematics to establish existence of energy minimizers. In order to solve this problem, we observe that the original third order term on $L_4$, proposed by Schiele and Trimper \cite{ST} in physics, is a linear combination of a fourth order term and a second order term. Therefore, we can propose a new Landau-de Gennes energy, which is equal to the original for uniaxial nematic $Q$-tensors. The new Landau-de Gennes energy with general elastic constants satisfies the coercivity condition for all $Q$-tensors, which establishes a new link between mathematical and physical theory. Similarly to the work of Majumdar-Zarnescu \cite{MZ}, we prove existence and convergence of minimizers of the new Landau-de Gennes energy. Moreover, we find a new way to study the limiting problem of the Landau-de Gennes system since the cross product method \cite{Chen} on the Ginzburg-Landau equation does not work for the Landau-de Gennes system.

Abstract:The Ericksen-Leslie system is a fundamental hydrodynamic model that describes the evolution of incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of global weak solutions to the general Ericksen-Leslie system with a Ginzburg-Landau type approximation in a two dimensional periodic domain. The proof is based on some delicate energy estimates for the difference of two weak solutions within a suitable functional framework that is less regular than the usual one at the natural energy level, combined with the Osgood lemma involving a specific double-logarithmic type modulus of continuity. We overcome the essential mathematical difficulties arising from those highly nonlinear terms in the Leslie stress tensor and in particular, the lack of maximum principle for the director equation due to the stretching effect of the fluid on the director field. Our argument makes full use of the coupling structure as well as the dissipative nature of the system, and relies on some techniques from harmonic analysis and paradifferential calculus in the periodic setting.

Abstract:In this work, we study the Cauchy problem of Poiseuille flow of the full Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals. The model is a coupled system of two partial differential equations: One is a quasi-linear wave equation for the director field representing the crystallization of the nematics, and the other is a parabolic PDE for the velocity field characterizing the liquidity of the material. We extend the work in [Chen, et. al. {\em Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.} {\bf 236} (2020), 839-891] for a special case to the general physical setup. The Cauchy problem is shown to have global solutions beyond singularity formation. Among a number of progresses made in this paper, a particular contribution is a systematic treatment of a parabolic PDE with only Hölder continuous diffusion coefficient and rough (worse than Hölder) nonhomogeneous terms.

Abstract:The classical Oseen-Frank theory of liquid crystal elasticity is based on the experimentally verified fact that there are three independent modes of distortion, each with its associated elastic constant. On the other hand, the arguably more first-principles order parameter-based Landau-de Gennes theory only involves two independent elastic modes. The resulting 'elastic constants problem' has led to a considerable amount of vexation among theorists. In a series of papers at the turn of the century, Fukuda and Yokoyama suggested that the resolution of this problem could be found in the proper treatment of non-local effects in the ideal part of the free energy. They used an ingenious, but technically complex, technique based on a field-theoretic approach to semi-flexible polymers. Here we revisit their idea but now in the more accessible framework of density functional theory of rigid particles. Our work recovers their main results for rod-like particles, in that generically an ordered assembly of non-interacting rods has three independent elastic constants associated to it that all scale as the square of the length of the particles and obey the inequalities $K_2 < K_1 < K_3$. We also consider the case of disc-like particles, and then find in line with expectations that $K_3 < K_1 < K_2$.

Abstract:The work deals with the Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals on the whole space, the half-space and on exterior domains with smooth boundary. The crystal orientation is described by a unit vector that is a small perturbation of a fixed constant vector. We prove, through a combination of energy method with dispersive a priori estimates, a local existence and a global existence for small initial data by a contraction argument asking low regularity assumptions on the initial condition.
