Abstract:In this paper, we propose a systematic way of liquid crystal modeling to build connections between microscopic theory and macroscopic theory. In the first part, we propose a new Q -tensor model based on Onsager’s molecular theory for liquid crystals. The Oseen–Frank theory can be recovered from the derived Q -tensor theory by making a uniaxial assumption, and the coefficients in the Oseen–Frank model can be examined. In addition, the smectic-A phase can be characterized by the derived macroscopic model. In the second part, we derive a new dynamic Q -tensor model from Doi’s kinetic theory by the Bingham closure, which obeys the energy dissipation law. Moreover, the Ericksen–Leslie system can also be derived from new Q -tensor system by making an expansion near the local equilibrium.

Abstract:The Doi kinetic theory for homogeneous flows of rodlike liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) is extended to inhomogeneous flows through introducing a nonlocal intermolecular potential. An extra term in the form of an elastic body force comes out as a result of this extension. Systematic asympototic analysis in the small Deborah number limit is carried out, and the classical Ericksen- Leslie equations are derived in this limit. The Leslie coefficients are derived in terms of molecular parameters, and the Ericksen stress emerges from the body force.

Abstract:A Brownian dynamics simulation using the Lebwohl-Lasher (LL) nematogen model is developed to investigate liquid crystals (LCs) on two-dimensional lattices. According to the examination of defect annihilation and domain growth, this methodology appears to be a successful approach in studying the LC dynamics, its main advantage being that the time evolution in the simulation mimics the physical time, in contrast to related modellings published recently. In addition, the Freedericksz transition of an LC under static magnetic fields is reproduced. Further analysis of the simulation outputs and the associated continuum theory of LC elasticity reveals that the LL potential can, by analogy, be obtained from the Frank energy. As a result, the methodology of the combination of Brownian dynamics simulation with the LL model is proven valid and can be extended to study the director dynamics of LCs subjected to external fields.

Abstract:Liquid crystals with molecules constrained to the tangent bundle of a curved surface show interesting phenomena resulting from the tight coupling of the elastic and bulk free energies of the liquid crystal with geometric properties of the surface. We derive thermodynamically consistent Frank-Oseen-Helfrich and Landau-de Gennes-Helfrich models which consider the simultaneous relaxation of the director/Q-tensor fields and the surface. The resulting systems of vector- or tensor-valued surface partial differential equation and geometric evolution laws are numerically solved to tackle the rich dynamics of these systems and to compute the resulting equilibrium shapes. The results strongly depend on the intrinsic and extrinsic curvature contributions and can lead to unexpected asymmetric shapes.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the isotropic–nematic phase transition for the nematic liquid crystal based on the Landau–de Gennes $\mathbf {Q}$-tensor theory. We justify the limit from the Landau–de Gennes flow to a sharp interface model: in the isotropic region, $\mathbf {Q}\equiv 0$; in the nematic region, the $\mathbf {Q}$-tensor is constrained on the manifolds $\mathcal {N}=\{s_+(\mathbf {n}\otimes \mathbf {n}-\frac{1}{3}\mathbf {I}), \mathbf {n}\in {\mathbb {S}^2}\}$ with $s_+$ a positive constant, and the evolution of alignment vector field $\mathbf {n}$ obeys the harmonic map heat flow, while the interface separating the isotropic and nematic regions evolves by the mean curvature flow. This problem can be viewed as a concrete but representative case of the Rubinstein–Sternberg–Keller problem introduced in Rubinstein et al. (SIAM J. Appl. Math. 49:116–133, 1989; SIAM J. Appl. Math. 49:1722–1733, 1989).

Abstract:In liquid crystal elastomers, the orientational order of liquid crystals is coupled with elastic distortions of crosslinked polymer networks. Previous theoretical research has described these materials through two different approaches: a neoclassical theory based on the liquid crystal director and the deformation tensor, and a geometric elasticity theory based on the difference between the actual metric tensor and a reference metric. Here, we connect those two approaches using a formalism based on differential geometry. Through this connection, we determine how both the director and the geometry respond to a change of temperature.

Modelling of nematic liquid crystal display devices

Abstract:A lattice Boltzmann scheme is presented which recovers the dynamics of nematic and chiral liquid crystals; the method essentially gives solutions to the Qian-Sheng equations for the evolution of the velocity and tensor order-parameter fields. The resulting algorithm is able to include five independent Leslie viscosities, a Landau-deGennes free energy which introduces three or more elastic constants, a temperature dependent order parameter, surface anchoring and viscosity coefficients, flexo-electric and order electricity and chirality. When combined with a solver for the Maxwell equations associated with the electric field, the algorithm is able to provide a full 'device solver' for a liquid crystal display. Coupled lattice Boltzmann schemes are used to capture the evolution of the fast momentum and slow director motions in a computationally efficient way. The method is shown to give results in close agreement with analytical results for a number of validating examples. The use of the method is illustrated through the simulation of the motion of defects in a zenithal bistable liquid crystal device.
A Modified Landau-de Gennes Theory for Smectic Liquid Crystals: Phase Transitions and Structural Transitions

Abstract:We mathematically model Smectic-A (SmA) phases with a modified Landau-de Gennes (mLdG) model. The orientational order of the SmA phase is described by a tensor-order parameter $\mathbf{Q}$, and the positional order is described by a real scalar $u$, which models the deviation from the average density of liquid crystal molecules. Firstly, we prove the existence and regularity of global minimisers of the mLdG free energy in three-dimensional settings. Then, we analytically prove that the mLdG model can capture the Isotropic-Nematic-Smectic phase transition as a function of temperature, under some assumptions. Further, we explore stable smectic phases on a square domain, with edge length $\lambda$, and tangent boundary conditions. We use heuristic arguments to show that defects repel smectic layers and strong nematic ordering promotes layer formation. We use asymptotic arguments in the $\lambda\to 0$ and $\lambda\to\infty$ limits which reveal the correlation between the number and thickness of smectic layers, the amplitude of density fluctuations with the phenomenological parameters in the mLdG energy. For finite values of $\lambda$, we numerically recover BD-like and D-like stable smectic states observed in experiments. We also study the frustrated mLdG energy landscape and give numerical examples of transition pathways between distinct mLdG energy minimisers.

On the Initial Boundary Value Problem of a Navier-Stokes/Q-tensor Model for Liquid Crystals

Abstract:This work is concerned with the solvability of a Navier-Stokes/Q-tensor coupled system modeling the nematic liquid crystal flow on a bounded domain in three dimensional Euclidian space with strong anchoring boundary condition for the order parameter. We prove the existence of local in time strong solution to the system with the anisotropic elastic energy. The proof is based on mainly two ingredients: first, we show that the Euler-Lagrange operator corresponding to the Landau-de Gennes free energy with general elastic coefficients fulfills the strong Legendre condition. This result together with a higher order energy estimate leads to the well-posedness of the linearized system, and then a local in time solution of the original system which is regular in temporal variable follows via a fixed point argument. Secondly, the hydrodynamic part of the coupled system can be reformulated into a quasi-stationary Stokes type equation to which the regularity theory of the generalized Stokes system, and then a bootstrap argument can be applied to enhance the spatial regularity of the local in time solution.

Abstract:An energy-based, phase field model is developed for the coupling of two incompressible, immiscible complex fluid phases, in particular a nematic liquid crystal phase in a viscous fluid phase. The model consists of a system of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations for conservation of mass and momentum, phase transport, and interfacial boundary conditions. An efficient and easy-to-implement numerical scheme is developed and implemented to extend two benchmark fluid mechanical problems to incorporate a liquid crystal phase: filament breakup under the influence of capillary force and the gravity-driven, dripping faucet. We explore how the distortional elasticity and nematic anchoring at the liquid crystal-air interface modify the capillary instability in both problems. For sufficiently weak distortional elasticity, the effects are perturbative of viscous fluid experiments and simulations. However, above a Frank elasticity threshold, the model predicts a transition to the beads-on-a-string phenomenon associated with polymeric fluid filaments.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are special cross-linked polymer materials combining the large elastic deformability of elastomers with the orientational orders of liquid crystals. Here we develop a general framework of LCEs in the language of continuum mechanics to consider the interaction of polymer backbone and Liquid Crystal (LC) microstructure, which is suitable for large deformation and large director rotation. Based on the dissipation principle, the balance of momentum and the evolution equations of orientational order are obtained. In addition to the deformation and its time derivative, the basic kinematic ingredients of this theory are identical to those arising in the director theories and the order tensor theories for nematic fluids. The Cauchy stress consists of not only the bulk stress contribution of the backbone but also the Ericksen Leslie stress of LC and the obtained rotational momentum balance implies the asymmetric Cauchy stress due to the inhomogeneous director rotation. Based on the principles of objectivity and symmetry, we present the general form of free energy densities and Rayleigh dissipation function and give some possible invariants of constitutive functions. Further, we propose a simple model to study the rate dependence of stretch induced reorientation processes for thin LCE films. Semi-analytical method is utilized to obtain the solutions of constrained uniaxial stretches and stretches with shear for homogenous deformations. The results indicate that the stress-deformation response and the director rotation are rate dependent and can be non-monotonic depending on the initial orientations. Finite element simulations are carried out to study the process of uniaxial stretches with fixed grips. Two different types of stress induced director reorientation processes are observed, one via stripe domains and the other via uniform rotations. We find that the appearance of the stripe domains has a strong dependence on aspect ratios and initial director orientation, which show good agreement with experiment results. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Liquid crystals establish a nearly unique combination of thermodynamic, hydrodynamic, and topological behavior. This poses a challenge to their theoretical understanding and modeling. The arena where these effects come together is the mesoscopic (micron) scale. It is then important to develop models aimed at capturing this variety of dynamics. We have generalized the particle-based multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD) method to model the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals. Following the Qian-Sheng theory [Phys. Rev. E 58, 7475 (1998)1063-651X10.1103/PhysRevE.58.7475] of nematics, the spatial and temporal variations of the nematic director field and order parameter are described by a tensor order parameter. The key idea is to assign tensorial degrees of freedom to each MPCD particle, whose mesoscopic average is the tensor order parameter. This nematic MPCD method includes backflow effect, velocity-orientation coupling, and thermal fluctuations. We validate the applicability of this method by testing (i) the nematic-isotropic phase transition, (ii) the flow alignment of the director in shear and Poiseuille flows, and (iii) the annihilation dynamics of a pair of line defects. We find excellent agreement with existing literature. We also investigate the flow field around a force dipole in a nematic liquid crystal, which represents the leading-order flow field around a force-free microswimmer. The anisotropy of the medium not only affects the magnitude of velocity field around the force dipole, but can also induce hydrodynamic torques depending on the orientation of dipole axis relative to director field. A force dipole experiences a hydrodynamic torque when the dipole axis is tilted with respect to the far-field director. The direction of hydrodynamic torque is such that the pusher- (or puller-) type force dipole tends to orient along (or perpendicular to) the director field. Our nematic MPCD method can have far-reaching implications not only in modeling of nematic flows, but also to study the motion of colloids and microswimmers immersed in an anisotropic medium.

Abstract:We study the small Deborah number limit of the Doi–Onsager equation in the case when hydrodynamic effects are neglected. This is a Smoluchowski-type equation that describes the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals at a molecular level, by characterizing the evolution of a number density function, depending upon both particle position x∈Rd(d=2,3) and orientation vector m∈S2 (the unit sphere). We prove that, when the Deborah number tends to zero, the family of solutions with rough initial data near local equilibria will converge strongly to a local equilibrium distribution prescribed by a weak solution of the harmonic map heat flow into S2. This flow is a special case of the gradient flow of the well known Oseen–Frank energy functional for nematic liquid crystals. The key ingredient is to show the strong compactness of the family of number density functions. The proof relies on the strong compactness of the corresponding Q-tensor (namely the second moment), a detailed analysis of the linearized operator near the limit local equilibrium distribution, and an energy dissipation estimate.

Abstract:In this paper, we rigorously justify the connection between the Qian--Sheng inertial $Q$-tensor model and the full Ericksen--Leslie model for the liquid crystal flow. By using the Hilbert expansion method, we prove that when the elastic coefficients tend to zero (also called the uniaxial limit), the solution to the Qian--Sheng inertial model will converge to the solution to the full inertial Ericksen--Leslie system.
