Abstract:Light absorbers have drawn intensive attention as crucial components for solar-energy harvesting, thermal emission tailoring, modulators, etc. However, achievement of light absorbers with wide bandwidth remains a challenge thus far. Here, a thin, unprecedentedly ultrabroadband strong light absorber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which consists of periodic taper arrays constructed by an alumina-chrome multilayered metamaterial (MM) on a gold substrate. This MM can change from a hyperbolic material to an anisotropic dielectric material at different frequency ranges and the special material features are the fundamental origins of the ultrabroadband absorption. The absorber is quite insensitive to the incident angle, and can be insensitive to the polarization. One two-dimensional periodic array of 400-nm height MM tapers is fabricated. The measured absorption is over 90% over almost the entire solar spectrum, reaching an average level of 96%, and remains high (above 85%) even in the longer-wavelength range till 4 m. The proposed absorbers open up a new avenue to realize broadband thin light-harvesting structures.

Abstract:Thin devices with large areas have strong and omnidirectional absorption over a wide bandwidth and are in demand for applications such as energy harvesting, structural color, and vehicle LiDAR (laser detection and ranging). Despite persistent efforts in the design and fabrication of such devices, the simultaneous realization of all these desired properties remains a challenge. In this study, a 190-nm-thick metasurface with an area of 3 cm2, incorporating dielectric cylinder arrays, a chromium layer, a silicon nitride (SiNx) layer, and an aluminum layer is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The developed device achieves an average absorptivity of ∼99% (97% in the experiment) in the entire visible spectrum 400-700 nm. Moreover, it exhibits strong absorption over a wide range of incident angles (∼91% and 90% at 60° in the calculation and experiment, respectively). Importantly, the feasibility of applying the developed metasurface absorber to solar thermophotovoltaics and vehicle LiDAR (laser detection and ranging) has been explored. Moreover, the photoresist can be replaced by other glues and easily scaled up to a large area using the roll-to-roll nanoimprinting process. With the excellent spectral properties and performance, this device is promising for large-area applications.

Abstract:We present a combined theoretical and experimental effort to enable strong light absorption (>70%) in atomically thin MoS2 films (≤4 layers) for either narrowband incidence with arbitrarily prespecified wavelengths or broadband incidence like solar radiation. This is achieved by integrating the films with resonant photonic structures that are deterministically designed using a unique reverse design approach based on leaky mode coupling. The design starts with identifying the properties of leaky modes necessary for the targeted strong absorption, followed by searching for the geometrical features of nanostructures to support the desired modes. This process is very intuitive and only involves a minimal amount of computation, thanks to the straightforward correlations between optical functionality and leaky modes as well as between leaky modes and the geometrical feature of nanostructures. The result may provide useful guidance for the development of high-performance atomic-scale photonic devices, such as solar cells, modulators, photodetectors, and photocatalysts.
High-performance THz Metamaterial Absorber

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultra-broadband, polarization-insensitive and wide-angle metamaterial absorber for terahertz (THz) frequencies using arrays of truncated pyramid unit structure made of metal-dielectric multilayer composite. In our design each sub-layer behaving as an effective waveguide is gradually modified in their lateral width to realize a wideband response by effectively stitching together the resonance bands of different waveguide modes. Experimentally, our five layer sample with a total thickness 21um is capable of producing a large absorptivity above 80 40. The full absorption width at half maximum (FWHM) of our device is around 127 absorber design has high practical feasibility and can be easily integrated with the semiconductor technology to make high efficient THz-oriented devices.

Abstract:We present a novel scheme for ultrabroadband and omnidirectional perfect absorbers with compact multilayer film structure. Our proposed device shows an average absorption of similar to 98% over a wide range of wavelengths ranging from 400 to 2000 nm. The ultrabroadband characteristics are achieved with strongly overlapped optical resonances by designing a tandem structure composed of three absorptive materials, while the overall structure features a graded refractive index profile to obtain a wideband antireflection property. In addition to the high efficiency and ultrabroadband absorption, our perfect absorbers exhibit a great angular tolerance up to 60 degrees, which is attributed to not only relatively broad resonances but also negligible propagation phase shifts in ultrathin highly absorbing layers. Lastly, we explore the effect of the number of semiconductor-metal stacks on the performance of the absorber. The presented approach can have tremendous potential for various applications, such as solar-thermal energy harvesting, thermoelectrics, detection, and imaging.

Abstract:We propose a broadband, efficient, ultra-thin metal-insulator-metal (MIM) absorber with a simple single-sized disk configuration by utilizing metals with high imaginary part of permittivity (epsilon"). The physics behind this is that field dissipation is remarkably enhanced in MIM absorbers with high-epsilon" metals, significantly extending the absorption bandwidths, which are conventionally limited by magnetic resonances of MIM absorbers with low-epsilon" metals. The experimentally demonstrated MIM absorber based on tungsten with high-epsilon" yields broadband absorption from visible to near-infrared range (400-1700 nm) with an average measured absorption of 84%. The ultra-thin and single-sized nanostructure with broadband efficient absorption facilitates the scalability to largearea photonic applications. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Material and structure are the essential elements of all-dielectric metamaterials. Structure design for specific dielectric materials has been studied while the contribution of material and synergistic effect of material and structure have been overlooked in the past years. Herein, we propose a material-structure integrated design (MSID) methodology for all-dielectric metamaterials, increasing the degree of freedom in the metamaterial design, to comprehensively optimize microwave absorption performance and further investigate the contribution of material and structure to absorption. A dielectric metamaterial absorber with an ultra-broadband absorption from 5.3 to 18.0 GHz is realized. Theoretical calculation and numerical simulation demonstrate that the symphony of material and structure excites multiple resonance modes encompassing quarter-wavelength interference cancellation, spoof surface plasmon polariton mode, dielectric resonance mode and grating mode, which is essential to afford the desirable absorption performance. This work highlights the superiority of coupling of material and structure and provides an effective design and optimization strategy for all-dielectric metamaterial absorbers.

Abstract:Broadband absorption of electromagnetic waves in different wavelength regions is desired for applications ranging from highly efficient solar cells, waste heat harvesting, multi-color infrared (IR) detection to sub-ambient radiative cooling. Taper-shaped structures made up of alternating metal/dielectric multilayers offer the broadest absorption bandwidth so far, but face a trade-off between optical performance and material choice, i.e., those with the broadest bandwidth utilize exclusively CMOS-incompatible materials, hampering their large-scale applications. In this work, through careful examination of the unique material property of aluminum (Al) and zinc sulfide (ZnS), a sawtooth-like and a pyramid-like multilayer absorber is proposed, whose working bandwidth (0.2-15 µm) covers from ultraviolet (UV) all the way to long-wave infrared (LWIR) range, being compatible with CMOS technology at the same time. The working principle of broadband absorption is elucidated with effective hyperbolic metamaterial model plus the excitation of multiple slow-light modes. Absorption performance such as polarization and incidence-angle dependence are also investigated. The proposed Al-ZnS multilayer absorbers with ultra-broadband near-perfect absorption may find potential applications in infrared imaging and spectroscopy, radiative cooling, solar energy conversion, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed an ultra-broadband and high absorption rate absorber based on Fe materials. The proposed absorber consists of a rectangle pillar, two rings, a SiO 2 film, a Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) planar cavity, an Fe mirror, and a SiO 2 substrate. The average absorption reaches 98.45% in the range of 400–4597 nm. We investigate and analyze the electric field distributions. The analysis of the physical mechanism behind the broadband absorption effect reveals that it is driven by excited surface plasmons. Furthermore, the absorber can maintain high absorption efficiency under a large incident angle. The geometrical symmetric structure possesses polarization insensitivity properties. The proposed structure allows for certain manufacturing errors, which improves the feasibility of the actual manufacture. Then, we investigate the effect of different materials on absorption. Finally, we study the matching degree between the energy absorption spectrum and the standard solar spectrum under AM 1.5. The results reveal that the energy absorption spectrum matches well with the standard solar spectrum under AM 1.5 over the full range of 400 to 6000 nm. In contrast, energy loss can be negligible. The absorber possesses ultra-broadband perfect absorption, a high absorption rate, and a simple structure which is easy to manufacture. It has tremendous application potential in many areas, such as solar energy capture, thermal photovoltaics, terminal imaging, and other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Due to the inherent local limitations of surface plasmon resonance, it is challenging to design an ultra-broadband electromagnetic wave absorber covering multiple bands. In this paper, a novel Ultra-broadband perfect absorber is designed, which is a simple-type structure composed of metal-dielectric-metal (MDM), and the resonant cavity formed by metal and dielectric realizes high absorption. The calculated results of the absorber show that the average absorption rate in the range of 200–8000 nm is 95.70%, and the absorption bandwidth over 90% is 7800 nm. The ultra-broadband absorption can be attributed to the coupling effect of multiple resonances inside and outside the resonant cavity, which gives our proposed structure a wider bandwidth and higher light absorption capacity than the previously reported work and further reduces the complexity of the structure. When it is replaced by other materials, the structure also maintains high absorbency. In addition, the structure is not only polarization insensitive but also has wide-angle absorption, and it maintains high absorption in transverse magnetic (TM) mode and transverse electric (TE) mode. Even when the incident angle increases to 58°, the average absorption rate is still above 80%. It also has the characteristics of large process tolerance and strong adaptability to changing environments. These results allow the absorber to be applied in solar energy collection, infrared imaging and thermal detection, and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Ultra‐thin broadband metamaterial absorbers exhibit high absorptivity and broad bandwidths. Herein, we propose and simulate an ultra‐broadband wide‐angle polarization‐independent enhanced absorber with a metal‐insulator‐metal structure. The enhanced absorber exhibit ultra‐wideband characteristics from ultraviolet to far‐infrared range (0.35–10 μm), where it achieves an average absorption > 96%. It is insensitive to variations in the polarization state, exhibits a wide‐angle absorption because of a high degree of geometric symmetry, and shows a satisfactory absorption performance for a combination of different materials. Thus, the distinct structural characteristics of the device play a pivotal role in absorption. These advantages improve the flexibility of material selection in the design and manufacturing process of ultra‐broadband enhanced absorbers, thereby broadening their application potential in solar energy harvesting, infrared detectors, and thermal imaging. Abstract:We designed a metamaterial far-infrared absorber based on an MDM (metal–dielectric–metal) structure. We made a hollow crossed Ti microstructure at the top of the absorber. It is known that the coupling effect of equipartitional exciton resonance and intrinsic absorption at the surface of the depleting material has a strong influence on the absorber. Based on this, we investigated the absorption characteristics of the absorber using the Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) theory. The results show that the absorber absorbed more than 90% of the light within a bandwidth of 12.01 μm. The absorber has an average absorption of 94.08% in the longwave infrared (LWIR) to ultra-longwave infrared (UWIR) bands (10.90–22.91 μm). The polarization insensitivity of the designed absorber is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption spectra of the absorber at different polarization angles. By adjusting the relevant geometric parameters, the absorption spectrum can be independently adjusted. Furthermore, the absorber exhibits good incidence angle insensitivity in both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The absorbers are simple and easy to configure for applications such as optical cloaking, infrared heat emitters, and photodetectors. These advantages will greatly benefit the application of absorbers in practice.

Abstract:Since the electromagnetic (EM) absorbers have wide uses in many military and civilian applications, much effort has been devoted continuously to broadening the absorption bandwidth while making the thickness as thin as possible. In this paper, we present an ultra-wideband metamaterial absorber composed of periodic stepped-structures of magnetic material with a mixture of carbonyl iron powder and resin. The proposed metamaterial absorber features an ultra-thin thickness of only 0.025 wavelength and an ultra-broad operating bandwidth (defined by absorption larger than 90%) from 1.23 to 19 GHz. The ultra-broadband strong absorption is mainly attributed to the giant magnetic loss of the magnetic material, the structure-induced multi-resonances, and the edge diffraction effects of the stepped structures. In addition, good angular performance is observed for all polarizations. Experiments are carried out and are in good agreements with the simulated ones. We also propose a method to further reduce the weight of the structure without affecting much of the overall absorbing performance. The proposed metamaterial absorber has promising prospects in many real-world applications, such as RCS reduction and EM compatibility.
Enabling Ultrathin Metamaterial Absorbers with Narrow Slits

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers (MAs) consisting of subwavelength units offer flexible design freedom and prominent advantages over traditional absorbers. Here, it is found that narrow slits provide the MAs a significant passageway to control the absorption behavior and obtain an ultrasmall thickness. As narrowing the slits in an MA gradually, two effects appear in turn, of which the former is that the slits help the localized energy leak away from the resonant units to balance the material absorption and radiation leakage rates and sustain perfect absorption, and the latter is that acting as a capacitor, the slits red‐shift the absorption peak. A record ultrathin microwave MA with a thickness of only 1/474 of the working wavelength is demonstrated. Colossal electric field is excited inside ultranarrow slits by the assistance of localized resonance in collecting the incident wave. The finding can be extended to other frequencies, and is fascinating for some areas requiring ultrathin absorption structures or strong interaction between waves and matters.
A Multimetal Broadband Metamaterial Perfect Absorber With Compact Dimension

Abstract:We propose an extremely simple multiple-metal metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA). The dimension of our proposed design is only 221 nm for the visible wavelength range from 400 to 700 nm. This is comparable with past efforts on MPAs using plasmonics at the same wavelength range, whereas the plasmonic excitation is absent in our proposal. A unity broadband absorption can be achieved with ultrathin metallic films. In addition, the wavelength scalability is possible using our design, and the fully planar simple configuration facilitates large-area photonic design without the need for lithography and etching. The physics is the field penetration and the field absorption for the photons at different wavelength ranges using different metallic layers. We also show that the adjustment of the individual layer thickness is critical to attaining a perfect wave impedance matching to vacuum. The titanium (Ti), nickel (Ni), and aluminum (Al) triple-metal configuration is used to demonstrate the concept experimentally, and a close match to the theoretical result is observed. The absorption band can be further widened with more stacking layers with various metals. We believe that the proposed design is very promising in the aspects of simple processing and scalable for large-area broadband unity absorption. It thus improves the future implementation of MPAs and facilitates a wide range of relevant applications.

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers over a broadband spectrum with high absorption, good angular tolerance, and easy configurations have essential importance for optical and optoelectronic devices. In this study, a hybrid metamaterial absorber comprising multilayered cermet thin films (multi-cermet) with tapered structure is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Combining optical interference of multi-cermet films and optical field localization of nano-cone structures, the average absorbance of both simulation and measurement are more than 98% in an ultrabroad bandwidth (300–3000 nm), and the proposed absorber shows a good angular tolerance as well. The composite process of two easy-operated and efficient methods, colloidal lithography, and magnetron sputtering, is employed for large-area fabrication. In addition, owing to flexible polyimide substrate, the proposed absorber also shows good bending and heating resistance, which reflects its potential in engineering application.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to enhance the design of a multilayer and planar metamaterial that serves multiple functions, including high efficiency and ultra-broadband absorption, as well as acting as a narrowband sensor. The primary feature of this absorber is its fully planar structure, which enables the flexible utilization of two distinct absorption functionalities: ultra-broadband absorption, achieved through the application of the MgF2 layer, and narrowband absorption, achieved through the implementation of the Cu layer. To conduct the simulation analyses, COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation software (version 6.0) was employed. The initial innovation lies in the fact that upon irradiation of normal incident light on MgF2 side, the material exhibited an exceptional average absorptivity of 97.0% across an ultra-broadband range spanning from 410 to approximately 2300 nm. Moreover, when the same normal incident light was radiated on the Cu side, the material demonstrated a distinct peak at a precise wavelength of 480 nm, accompanied by an absorptivity of 95.66%. Notably, these results were obtained with the added benefit of angle insensitivity. Such characteristics arise due to the multiple excitation of diverse resonant modes facilitated by the localized surface plasmon resonance and metal–insulator–metal Fabry–Perot cavity. The second innovation focuses on demonstrating that MgF2 can serve as an effective anti-reflection layer, enhancing the absorptivity of the ultra-broadband absorber. The third innovation aims to establish that Cu is the optimal metal choice. Even substituting Cu with other metals did not diminish the absorptivity of the ultra-broadband absorber; it should be noted that alternative metals might negatively impact the absorptivity of the narrowband absorber.

Abstract:In this paper, we design a solar absorber based on the Si 3 N 4 –W–Ti–SiO 2 insulator–metal–insulator structure and demonstrate it using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The absorption rate of the absorber consisting of a multi-layer structure with cross etching is over 90% in the bandwidth of 500 nm to 2995 nm with an average absorption rate of 98.3%. There are three peaks at 620 nm, 1002 nm and 1761 nm with peak heights of 99.8%, 99.8% and 99.0%, respectively. By analyzing the distribution of electric and magnetic fields in different sections of the absorber, it is found that the physical mechanism of the structure with high absorptivity is due to the interaction of propagating surface plasmon resonance and local surface plasma resonance. The effects of different structural parameters and the angle of incidence of a light source on the absorber absorption are discussed. The absorber can be used in solar thermal systems, thermal photovoltaics and thermoelectronic devices.
