Abstract:Thin devices with large areas have strong and omnidirectional absorption over a wide bandwidth and are in demand for applications such as energy harvesting, structural color, and vehicle LiDAR (laser detection and ranging). Despite persistent efforts in the design and fabrication of such devices, the simultaneous realization of all these desired properties remains a challenge. In this study, a 190-nm-thick metasurface with an area of 3 cm2, incorporating dielectric cylinder arrays, a chromium layer, a silicon nitride (SiNx) layer, and an aluminum layer is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The developed device achieves an average absorptivity of ∼99% (97% in the experiment) in the entire visible spectrum 400-700 nm. Moreover, it exhibits strong absorption over a wide range of incident angles (∼91% and 90% at 60° in the calculation and experiment, respectively). Importantly, the feasibility of applying the developed metasurface absorber to solar thermophotovoltaics and vehicle LiDAR (laser detection and ranging) has been explored. Moreover, the photoresist can be replaced by other glues and easily scaled up to a large area using the roll-to-roll nanoimprinting process. With the excellent spectral properties and performance, this device is promising for large-area applications.

Abstract:Electromagnetic metasurface has become the focus of researchers in the field of electromagnetic absorption in recent years because of its thin thickness, simple structure, and high absorption rate. With high real and imaginary parts of the permittivity in the microwave frequency regime, water plays a crucial role in absorbing materials. This work demonstrates a water-based translucent metasurface with 5.2 mm, which is fabricated by 3D printing. By changing the conductivity of water, a metasurface with good absorption performance is obtained, which can realize ultra-wideband absorption in 5.85-23.1 GHz and 5.85-14.8 GHz under the oblique incidence of 40 degrees. The metasurface has the characteristics of thin thickness, wide-band absorption, and translucency.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultra-broadband, polarization-insensitive and wide-angle metamaterial absorber for terahertz (THz) frequencies using arrays of truncated pyramid unit structure made of metal-dielectric multilayer composite. In our design each sub-layer behaving as an effective waveguide is gradually modified in their lateral width to realize a wideband response by effectively stitching together the resonance bands of different waveguide modes. Experimentally, our five layer sample with a total thickness 21um is capable of producing a large absorptivity above 80 40. The full absorption width at half maximum (FWHM) of our device is around 127 absorber design has high practical feasibility and can be easily integrated with the semiconductor technology to make high efficient THz-oriented devices.

Abstract:Narrow bandwidth is a fundamental issue plaguing practical applications of metamaterial absorbers. In this Letter, we show that by deliberately controlling the dispersion and dissipation of a metamaterial, an ultrawideband perfect metamaterial absorber with complex-valued constitutive parameters strictly satisfying the modified model of a perfectly matched layer, can be achieved. The nearly perfect power absorption, better than 99%, was experimentally observed in an unprecedented bandwidth of 39%, approaching the theoretical Rozanov limit. We expect a wide range of applications to emerge from this general concept.

Abstract:We present a simple design for an ultra-thin dual-band polarization-insensitive and wide-angle perfect metamaterial absorber (PMMA) based on a single circular sector resonator structure (CSRS). Both simulation and experimental results reveal that two resonance peaks with average absorption above 99% can be achieved. The dual-band PMMA is ultra-thin with total thickness of 0.5 mm, which is <l/38 with respect to the operation frequencies. The surface electric field and current distributions of the unit-cell structure reveal the physical picture of the dual-band absorption. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the PMMA could retain high absorption level at large angles of polarization and incidence for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Furthermore, the absorption properties of the PMMA can be adjusted by varying the geometric parameters of the unit-cell structure.

Abstract:Here, we propose an ultra-wide-angle metasurface absorber. It consists of a one-dimensional titanium grating periodic array with dislocation distribution. The average absorptivity of the absorber exceeds 94% in the ultraviolet to visible light band (200–760 nm) under normal TM-polarized incident wave. This benefits from the coupling of propagating surface plasmon resonance, local surface plasmon resonance, and hybrid mode resonance. For normal TE-polarized incident wave, the absorber achieves perfect narrowband absorption (>99.22%) in the ultraviolet light region because of the excitation of cavity-mode resonance. The absorber exhibits broadband absorption with an average absorptivity exceeding 85% in the visible light band because of the excitation of slot mode. These excellent absorption properties are well retained at 70° oblique incidence. The structural symmetry of the absorber dramatically expands the flexibility of device applications. It can achieve great absorption performance in an ultra-wide-angle range of 280° along the incident light direction. In addition, the absorber is sensitive to the polarization angle and incident angle of ultraviolet light, which can be used for ultraviolet detection and sensing. The proposed ultra-wide-angle metasurface absorber has potential application in the field of optical communication, photoelectric detection, and solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:We present an ultra-wideband metamaterial absorber with active frequency selective surface (AFSS). The metamaterial absorber consists of a periodic arrangement of AFSS patterns and a metallic back-plane, separated by 4 mm dielectric spacer. By adjusting the bias voltage of the PIN diodes embedded in the AFSS cells, we achieve three absorbing bands at different frequencies. Finite element method (FEM) simulation is carried out to discuss the absorbing properties of the absorber. The experimental results demonstrate that the metamaterial absorber has wideband absorption with a reflectivity below -8 dB over the microwave range from 2.43 to 14 GHz.

Abstract:High absorption efficiency is particularly desirable at present for various microtechnological applications including microbolometers, photodectors, coherent thermal emitters, and solar cells. Here we report the design, characterization, and experimental demonstration of an ultrathin, wide-angle, subwavelength high performance metamaterial absorber for optical frequencies. Experimental results show that an absorption peak of 88% is achieved at the wavelength of ∼1.58 μm, though theoretical results give near perfect absorption.

Abstract:The article introduces an ultra‐wideband metamaterial absorber (UWMA) achieving over 90% absorption from 10.82 to 34.59 GHz, along with its equivalent circuit model analysis. The UWMA has an ultra‐thin thickness of 2.2 mm and boasts over 75% optical transparency in the visible spectrum. It holds significant potential for applications in aircraft stealth, transparent chambers, and flexible electronic screens. In this paper, an ultra‐wideband metamaterial absorber (UWMA) is proposed and demonstrated by using a transparent and flexible sandwich structure, which consists of a top patterned double‐square loop (DSL) of conductive film, the polymer interlayer, the bottom conductive film. The work presents the UWMA's equivalent circuit model for a macroscopic analysis of its physical mechanism. Further, optimizing UWMA's structural parameters using this equivalent circuit model can greatly enhance its efficiency. The absorption coefficient of the designed structure achieves over 90% within the wide frequency range from 10.82 to 34.59 GHz due to the overlapping of three absorption bands. The experimental results indicate that the absorption coefficient of the fabricated structure exceeds 60% in the frequency range of 10.45–35.28 GHz, and reaches 90% in the majority of frequency range of 10.71–28.51 GHz, while its averaged optical transparency in the visible spectrum exceeds 75%. The UWMA achieves high transparency due to a small ratio of the surface area occupied by the ITO pattern to the total area and realizes multiple‐resonance ultra‐wideband absorption with conformality while maintaining a thickness of only 2.2 mm, which has diverse applications in the field of electromagnetics, including aircraft stealth, transparent chambers, and flexible electronic screens.

Abstract:This paper proposes a perfect metamaterial absorber based on a dielectric−dielectric−metal structure, which realizes ultra-narrowband dual-band absorption in the near-infrared band. The maximum Q factor is 484. The physical mechanism that causes resonance is hybrid coupling between magnetic polaritons resonance and plasmon resonance. At the same time, the research results show that the intensity of magnetic polaritons resonance is much greater than the intensity of the plasmon resonance. By changing the structural parameters and the incident angle of the light source, it is proven that the absorber is tunable, and the working angle tolerance is 15°. In addition, the sensitivity and figure of merit when used as a refractive index sensor are also analyzed. This design provides a new idea for the design of high-Q optical devices, which can be applied to photon detection, spectral sensing, and other high-Q multispectral fields.

Ultrabroadband metamaterial perfect absorber operating in ultraviolet to near-infrared regime

Abstract:Designing broadband absorbers has garnered significant attention recently due to their wide range of applications. However, developing absorbers with a simple structure that operate across an extensive optical regime remains challenging. This paper presents a metamaterial absorber with a simple structure that achieves ultrabroadband absorption ranging from 287 to 1544 nm, covering ultraviolet to near-infrared regimes. The absorber consists of periodically arranged dielectric blocks on a metallic slab, and it achieves an absorption efficiency exceeding 90%. This high performance is attributed to the superposition of multiple neighboring resonances. Furthermore, the absorber remains effective at large incidence angles and exhibits polarization independence due to its symmetric configuration. The simplicity of the design not only facilitates fabrication but also makes it suitable for applications in solar energy harvesting, optical imaging, and sensing.

Abstract:<p>An ultra broadband high-performance metamaterials absorber is designed based on the Fabry-Perot resonance effect and hybrid coupling theory. In this paper, we use the numerical method to analyze the absorption characteristics of the absorber under the conditions of wide band, different polarization states and large angle oblique incidence. The results reveal that the absorption band of the absorber is 300 nm–3000 nm, and its average absorption rate exceeds 93%. In addition, the absorptivity of the absorber is less affected by the polarization angle and incident angle of the incident light. The physical mechanism of wide-band high-absorption is analyzed, which is mainly caused by Fabry-Perot resonance, surface plasmon resonance, local surface plasmon resonance and the hybrid coupling among them. The proposed metamaterial absorber is expected to play a role in invisible devices, solar cells and other fields owing to its wide absorption bandwidth, high absorption, independent to polarization and stable at wide-angle of incidence.</p>

Abstract:Ultra‐thin broadband metamaterial absorbers exhibit high absorptivity and broad bandwidths. Herein, we propose and simulate an ultra‐broadband wide‐angle polarization‐independent enhanced absorber with a metal‐insulator‐metal structure. The enhanced absorber exhibit ultra‐wideband characteristics from ultraviolet to far‐infrared range (0.35–10 μm), where it achieves an average absorption > 96%. It is insensitive to variations in the polarization state, exhibits a wide‐angle absorption because of a high degree of geometric symmetry, and shows a satisfactory absorption performance for a combination of different materials. Thus, the distinct structural characteristics of the device play a pivotal role in absorption. These advantages improve the flexibility of material selection in the design and manufacturing process of ultra‐broadband enhanced absorbers, thereby broadening their application potential in solar energy harvesting, infrared detectors, and thermal imaging. Abstract:Metamaterials integrated with graphene exhibit tremendous freedom in tailoring their optical properties, particularly in the infrared region, and are desired for a wide range of applications, such as thermal imaging, cloaking, and biosensing. In this article, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate an ultrathin (total thickness < λ 0 / 15 ) and electrically tunable mid-infrared perfect absorber based on metal–insulator–metal (MIM) structured metamaterials. The Q-values of the absorber can be tuned through two rather independent parameters, with geometrical structures of metamaterials tuning radiation loss (Qr) of the system and the material loss (tanδ) to further change mainly the intrinsic loss (Qa). This concise mapping of the structural and material properties to resonant mode loss channels enables a two-stage optimization for real applications: geometrical design before fabrication and then electrical tuning as a post-fabrication and fine adjustment knob. As an example, our device demonstrates an electrical and on-site tuning of ~5 dB change in absorption near the perfect absorption region. Our work provides a general guideline for designing and realizing tunable infrared devices and may expand the applications of perfect absorbers for mid-infrared sensors, absorbers, and detectors in extreme spatial-limited circumstances.

Abstract:The conventional design approaches for achieving perfect absorption of electromagnetic (EM) waves using metasurface absorbers (MSAs) are limited to absorbing waves in one direction while reflecting waves in the other. In this study, a novel ultrathin narrowband MSA with bidirectional perfect absorption properties has been proposed, based on a tri-layer metal square-circular-square patch (SCSP) structure. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MSA exhibits a remarkable absorbance of 98.1%, which is consistent with the experimental and theoretical calculations. The equivalent constitutive parameters that were retrieved, as well as the simulated surface current and the power loss density distributions, reveal that the perfect absorption of the designed MSA originates from the fundamental dipolar resonance. Furthermore, the proposed MSA demonstrates stable wide-angle absorption properties for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) waves under various oblique incidence angles. The absorption characteristics of the MSA can be fine-tuned by adjusting the structural parameters. Additionally, the proposed MSA boasts excellent ultrathin thickness, bidirectional, polarization-insensitive, and wide-angle properties, making it highly suitable for a range of potential applications such as imaging, detection, and sensing.

Abstract:Due to its unique advantage of optical properties, nanophotonic metamaterials have gained extensive applications in perfect absorbers. However, achieving both dual-band and ultra-narrow linewidth in absorbers simultaneously remains a challenge for typical metal-dielectric based metamaterials. In this work, a dual-band ultra-narrow perfect absorber consisting of a double slotted silicon nano-disk array that located on a silver film with a silica spacer layer is proposed theoretically. By combining the hybrid mode excited by the coupling of diffraction wave mode and magnetic dipole mode with the anapole-anapole interaction, two absorption peaks can be induced in the near-infrared regime, achieving nearly perfect absorbance of 99.31% and 99.61%, with sub-nanometer linewidths of 1.92 nm and 1.25 nm respectively. In addition, the dual-band absorption characteristics can be regulated by changing the structural parameters of the as-proposed metamaterials. The as-designed metamaterials can be employed as efficient two-channel refractive index sensors, with a sensitivity and figure of merit of 288 nm/RIU and 150 RIU-1 for the first band, and a sensitivity and figure of merit of up to 204 nm/RIU and 163.2 RIU-1 for the second band. This work not only opens up a new design idea for the realization of dual-band perfect absorber synchronously with ultra-narrow linewidth, but also provides potential attractive candidates for developing dual-frequency channel sensors.

The study of mid-infrared dual-band angle-insensitive and high-sensitivity absorber based on metamaterial structure

Abstract:: In this paper, we propose the design of an narrowband absorber based on a Square ring structure metamaterial nanostructure composed of a periodic array of Au Square ring and a gold (Au) film. The proposed structure can achieve a dual-band, nearly perfect absorption with a maximum absorbance of 99% and a full-width-athalf-maximum (FWHM) value that is less than 50 nm in the mid-infrared region. The polarization insensitivity is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption performance with normal incidences for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarized waves. In addition, we discuss the impact of change the incident angle and Polarization angle on the absorption performance in detail. The proposed narrow, dual-band metamaterial absorber shows promising prospects in applications such as infrared detection and imaging.

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers over a broadband spectrum with high absorption, good angular tolerance, and easy configurations have essential importance for optical and optoelectronic devices. In this study, a hybrid metamaterial absorber comprising multilayered cermet thin films (multi-cermet) with tapered structure is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Combining optical interference of multi-cermet films and optical field localization of nano-cone structures, the average absorbance of both simulation and measurement are more than 98% in an ultrabroad bandwidth (300–3000 nm), and the proposed absorber shows a good angular tolerance as well. The composite process of two easy-operated and efficient methods, colloidal lithography, and magnetron sputtering, is employed for large-area fabrication. In addition, owing to flexible polyimide substrate, the proposed absorber also shows good bending and heating resistance, which reflects its potential in engineering application.

Abstract:Mid-infrared perfect absorbers (PAs) based on metamaterials have many applications in material analysis and spectral detection thanks to the associated strong light–matter interaction. Most of the PAs are built as ‘metal nanostructure’-insulator-metals (MIM). In this paper, we propose an ultra-narrow band absorber based on dielectric metasurface with a metal film substrate. The absorptance comes from the plasmonic absorption in the metal film, where the absorption is enhanced (while the band of that is compressed) by the super cavity effect of the dielectric metasurface. Based on our numerical calculation, the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) can reach 67 nm at 8 μm (8‰), which is more than two orders of magnitude smaller than the resonance wavelength and much narrower than the theoretical FWHMs of MIM absorbers. Moreover, we studied their application in infrared thermal imaging, which also has more benefits than MIM absorbers. This kind of hybrid dielectric metasurface provides a new route to achieve ultra-narrow band perfect absorbers in the mid-infrared regime and can be broadly applied in detectors, thermal emitters and bio-spectroscopy.

Abstract:We demonstrate that wide-angle narrowband absorption can be achieved from a microcavity where a hyperbolic metamaterial and a dielectric layer are sandwiched between two metal reflectors. As the incident angle changes, the phase-shift variation in the hyperbolic metamaterial can compensate that in the dielectric layer and consequently, resulting in the angle-insensitive Fabry-Perot resonance in the proposed cavity. Silicon, Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), and gold layers are used to construct the microcavity to produce a narrow absorption band in the near-infrared region. Our device exhibits good absorption stability over a wide angle range of incidence from 0° to 70°. Moreover, the absorption wavelength can be tuned by changing the thickness of the resonator. The presented absorber may find potential applications in the design of narrowband thermophotovoltaic emitters, sensitive detectors, filters, etc.
