Abstract:A near-infrared wide-band polarization-insensitive absorber is demonstrated. It is composed of two-dimensional titanium disk arrays and a gold plate. The absorption at normal incidence is above 90% in the range of 164.2THz to 345.2 THz.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultra-broadband, polarization-insensitive and wide-angle metamaterial absorber for terahertz (THz) frequencies using arrays of truncated pyramid unit structure made of metal-dielectric multilayer composite. In our design each sub-layer behaving as an effective waveguide is gradually modified in their lateral width to realize a wideband response by effectively stitching together the resonance bands of different waveguide modes. Experimentally, our five layer sample with a total thickness 21um is capable of producing a large absorptivity above 80 40. The full absorption width at half maximum (FWHM) of our device is around 127 absorber design has high practical feasibility and can be easily integrated with the semiconductor technology to make high efficient THz-oriented devices.

Abstract:We propose a design of an ultra-broadband absorber based on a thin metamaterial nanostructure composed of a periodic array of titanium-silica (Ti-SiO2) cubes and an aluminum (Al) bottom film. The proposed structure can achieve nearly perfect absorption with an average absorbance of 97% spanning a broad range from visible to near-infrared (i.e., from 354 nm to 1066 nm), showing a 90% absorption bandwidth over 712 nm, and the peak absorption is up to 99.8%. The excitation of superior surface plasmon resonance combined with the resonance induced by the metal-insulator-metal Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity leads to this broadband perfect absorption. The polarization and angle insensitivity is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption performance with oblique incidences for both TE- and TM-polarized waves. In addition, we discuss the impact of various metal materials and geometry structure on absorption performance in detail. The proposed broadband metamaterial absorber shows a promising prospect in applications such as solar cell, infrared detection, and imaging. Moreover, the use of a thin titanium cap and an aluminum film instead of noble metals has the potential to reduce production cost in applications. Abstract:Metallic resonators separated by dielectric films with vertically stacked configurations is a common way to achieve broadband absorption. Here, we theoretically propose an ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber, which consists of an array of nanowire coated with multiple layers of alternating Ti and ZnS nanorings. The average absorption is calculated to be 98.8% in the spectral range of 0.4 to 17 μm. The performance of the proposed absorber is robust against a large change of both the incident and polarization angles. The proposed absorber may find potential applications in photovoltaics, photodetectors and manipulation of mechanical resonances.

Abstract:Ultra‐thin broadband metamaterial absorbers exhibit high absorptivity and broad bandwidths. Herein, we propose and simulate an ultra‐broadband wide‐angle polarization‐independent enhanced absorber with a metal‐insulator‐metal structure. The enhanced absorber exhibit ultra‐wideband characteristics from ultraviolet to far‐infrared range (0.35–10 μm), where it achieves an average absorption > 96%. It is insensitive to variations in the polarization state, exhibits a wide‐angle absorption because of a high degree of geometric symmetry, and shows a satisfactory absorption performance for a combination of different materials. Thus, the distinct structural characteristics of the device play a pivotal role in absorption. These advantages improve the flexibility of material selection in the design and manufacturing process of ultra‐broadband enhanced absorbers, thereby broadening their application potential in solar energy harvesting, infrared detectors, and thermal imaging. Abstract:A broadband, high‐absorption metamaterial absorber based on a metallic–dielectric disc structure is proposed, achieving over 90% absorbance in the 1500 to 4000 nm range with a bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber is polarization‐insensitive and capable of wide‐angle absorption, making it potentially valuable for infrared detection and imaging applications. A metamaterial absorber with broadband and high absorption based on a metal–dielectric disc–ring structure is proposed. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze the absorption performance of the absorber. The results show that the absorption of the proposed absorber is more than 90% in the band range from 1500 to 4000 nm with an absorption bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber has polarization‐insensitive properties due to the high symmetry of the structure. In addition, the absorber has large angle absorption characteristics with average absorptions of 92% and 82% at an incidence angle of 60° in TM and TE modes. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at the metal interface, and cavity resonance between the circular slits work in synergy to enhance the absorption and broaden the absorption bandwidth. The proposed absorber has a simple structure, easily accessible material, and excellent performance with potential applications in infrared detection, imaging, and other fields.

Ultra-broadband solar energy absorber based on Ti and TiN from visible to mid-infrared

Abstract:In this work, a metamaterial absorber based on titanium (Ti) and titanium nitride (TiN) is proposed. Theoretical calculation by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method shows that the absorber could achieve a bandwidth of 3720 nm in the spectrum range of 280 nm - 4000 nm. The average absorptivity of the absorber can reach 96.9%. The physical mechanism of the absorber is analyzed from the impedance matching theory and electromagnetic field distribution. Furthermore, simulation results illustrate that the absorber is polarization-insensitive and allows a wide range of incident angles. The absorption spectrum is basically consistent with that of air mass 1.5 (AM1.5). And it can achieve high thermal conversion efficiencies over a wide range of temperatures. These results indicate that the absorber has a good development prospect in solar energy collection.

Abstract:We designed a metamaterial far-infrared absorber based on an MDM (metal–dielectric–metal) structure. We made a hollow crossed Ti microstructure at the top of the absorber. It is known that the coupling effect of equipartitional exciton resonance and intrinsic absorption at the surface of the depleting material has a strong influence on the absorber. Based on this, we investigated the absorption characteristics of the absorber using the Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) theory. The results show that the absorber absorbed more than 90% of the light within a bandwidth of 12.01 μm. The absorber has an average absorption of 94.08% in the longwave infrared (LWIR) to ultra-longwave infrared (UWIR) bands (10.90–22.91 μm). The polarization insensitivity of the designed absorber is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption spectra of the absorber at different polarization angles. By adjusting the relevant geometric parameters, the absorption spectrum can be independently adjusted. Furthermore, the absorber exhibits good incidence angle insensitivity in both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The absorbers are simple and easy to configure for applications such as optical cloaking, infrared heat emitters, and photodetectors. These advantages will greatly benefit the application of absorbers in practice.

Abstract:An ultra broadband high-performance metamaterials absorber is designed based on the Fabry-Perot resonance effect and hybrid coupling theory. In this paper, we use the numerical method to analyze the absorption characteristics of the absorber under the conditions of wide band, different polarization states and large angle oblique incidence. The results reveal that the absorption band of the absorber is 300 nm–3000 nm, and its average absorption rate exceeds 93%. In addition, the absorptivity of the absorber is less affected by the polarization angle and incident angle of the incident light. The physical mechanism of wide-band high-absorption is analyzed, which is mainly caused by Fabry-Perot resonance, surface plasmon resonance, local surface plasmon resonance and the hybrid coupling among them. The proposed metamaterial absorber is expected to play a role in invisible devices, solar cells and other fields owing to its wide absorption bandwidth, high absorption, independent to polarization and stable at wide-angle of incidence.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a broadband microwave absorber that is visible and infrared transparent, flexible, polarization insensitive, and angularly stable. It is designed with a three-layer structure consisting of a resistance film of indium– tin–oxide (ITO), Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and a metallic grid. The proposed absorber can achieve more than 90% absorption in the frequency range of 8–18.34 GHz and greater than 95% in the range of 8.8-17.63 GHz, with a fractional bandwidth of 78.5%.

Abstract:Infrared observation is a crucial tool in the study of astronomical celestial bodies. Metamaterials have a vast prospect for applications in the field of optics due to their unique electromagnetic tunable characteristics. In order to obtain an ultra-broadband high absorption material in the infrared region, we proposed a metal-dielectric-metal-dielectric-metal (MDMDM) metamaterial absorber using a titanium (Ti) nano-cross layer based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonance and magnetic resonance cavity principles. The geometrical parameters of each layer have been examined carefully. The influence of incident angle from 0° to 60° is investigated for transverse electric and transverse magnetic plane-waves. Near-perfect absorption performance is achieved from near-infrared to mid-infrared region. The average absorption reaches as high as 97.41% from 2.05 to 6.08 μm. The absorber exhibits polarization-sensitive characteristics. The absorption peaks are 99.50% and 99.80% at 2.55 and 5.24 μm, respectively. The proposed material has potential applications in astronomical imaging, volcano and fire detection, remote sensing, biological monitoring, and other optical devices.

Abstract:This work presents an ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber in the wavelength range of 250–4000 nm. The absorber consists of a Ti disk resonator and a stack of TiO 2 /Ti square-shaped resonators, supported by TiO 2 /Ti thin layers. This arrangement of the layers offers a metal–insulator-metal configuration, enhancing the absorptivity of the structure. The effects of geometrical parameters, including the thickness of the resonators, the radius of the disk resonators, and the width of the square resonator, on the absorption spectrum of the absorber are investigated. To attain the highest average absorption, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed. The simulation results obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method indicate that the average absorption can reach a high value of 96.25% over the studied wavelength range. The over 90% absorption bandwidth is 3509 nm. Additionally, the solar absorption of the absorber is 94.89%. The absorption is more than 80% even for incident angles up to 50° for both TM and TE polarizations. The proposed absorber is a very promising option for solar energy harvesting, photo-thermal technology, photo-detection, and thermal-photovoltaics applications due to its high over 90% bandwidth, independence on the polarization and angle of incident light, and ease of fabrication.

Abstract:A wavelength-selective, ultrathin, broadband infrared metal–insulator–metal (MIM) absorber with multi-sized Ti–Ge cubes is proposed. By flexibly combining different sizes of Ti–Ge cubes, stacking upward and reasonably filling the border, all the resulting 3 structures that we propose show an average absorptivity of at least 90% over a wide spectral range in the infra-red, extending from 6. 3μm to 14.8μm. The absorptivity is further increased up to 99% when considering narrower spectral ranges such as 7.96-8.34μm and 11.02-11.75μm wavebands, which is superior than the previous work in long wavelength infrared band based on the MIM structure. Those characteristics vary depending on the 3 designs considered and studied in this work: single-layer structure, double-layer structure and modified structure. The intrinsic strong energy dissipation caused by highly lossy metal Ti (here Titanium) and excited low-Q cavity modes are key factors contributing to such efficient broadband absorption. The polarization and angle insensitivity are demonstrated by analysing the absorption performance with oblique incidences for both transverse electric wave (TE) and transverse magnetic wave (TM). Moreover, flexible combinations of different resonators allow trade-offs between the absorption bandwidth and the absorbance, which makes the operating waveband of the metamaterial absorber adjustable through proper design. The proposed broadband absorbers have many potential applications, including microbolometers, thermal emitters, and plasmonic sensors.

Abstract:In this paper, a metamaterial absorber for broad-spectrum absorption under solar radiation is proposed, which consists of periodic square arrays on a-Si spacer layer and Ti substrate. With the coupling of multiple resonances, the average absorption of the absorber is more than 95% within the studied spectrum (300–2000 nm) and the bandwidth of absorption over 90% is 1576 nm (from 329 nm to 1905 nm). Since the Ti material in the absorber is a refractory metal with low cost and stable mechanical properties, the absorber can operate in high temperature environment. Especially, the study results show that the absorber has a general applicability to other refractory metals. Also, the absorber is insensitive to polarization and incident angles, which is very attractive in practical manufacture and use due to a high absorption performance within a large fabrication tolerance. In addition, the absorption spectrum of the absorber is highly consistent with the solar spectrum and can maintain a high integrated absorption at large incident angle. These findings show that the absorber has potential applications in many areas such as solar cells, solar energy harvesting, thermal emitters and photothermal conversion.

Abstract:In this paper, an ultra-broadband polarization-insensitive far-infrared metamterial absorber with gold nanowire is proposed. Unlike some traditional metamaterial absorbers consisting of multilayer structure, our design is made up of gold nanowire array which is much simpler. Height and permittivity constant gradient both contribute to the broadband absorption. Each single gold nanowire acts as a nano-resonator, an array of nanowires with different height and dielectric together realize ultrabroadband absorption. In addition, our design could be extended to any other frequency regimes, which indicates potential applications in infrared detection, imaging and so on.
An Ultra-wide-angle Metasurface Absorber Operating in the Ultraviolet to Visible Range

Abstract:Here, we propose an ultra-wide-angle metasurface absorber. It consists of a one-dimensional titanium grating periodic array with dislocation distribution. The average absorptivity of the absorber exceeds 94% in the ultraviolet to visible light band (200–760 nm) under normal TM-polarized incident wave. This benefits from the coupling of propagating surface plasmon resonance, local surface plasmon resonance, and hybrid mode resonance. For normal TE-polarized incident wave, the absorber achieves perfect narrowband absorption (>99.22%) in the ultraviolet light region because of the excitation of cavity-mode resonance. The absorber exhibits broadband absorption with an average absorptivity exceeding 85% in the visible light band because of the excitation of slot mode. These excellent absorption properties are well retained at 70° oblique incidence. The structural symmetry of the absorber dramatically expands the flexibility of device applications. It can achieve great absorption performance in an ultra-wide-angle range of 280° along the incident light direction. In addition, the absorber is sensitive to the polarization angle and incident angle of ultraviolet light, which can be used for ultraviolet detection and sensing. The proposed ultra-wide-angle metasurface absorber has potential application in the field of optical communication, photoelectric detection, and solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:In this paper, we have designed and experimentally demonstrated a broadband absorber in the mid-infrared region based on the impedance matching method. The absorber is made of planar multilayered dielectric and metallic films without involving lithography in fabrication. Our measurements reveal high absorption over 85% in the wavelength range of 2.2-6.2 mu m. This wideband absorption is shown to be independent of the polarization and can be maintained over a range of incident angles up to 45 degrees. Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically study the broadband optical metamaterial absorber composed of silicon carbide (SiC) hemisphere array placed atop a tungsten substrate, where high average absorptivity reaching 93.5% is obtained in a broad range from ultraviolet to near-infrared frequency. The presented broadband metamaterial absorber exhibits good tolerance to incidence angle up to 40 degrees and shows polarization-independent performance. The underlying mechanism of the broadband absorption is attributed to the magnetic dipole resonance stimulated inside SiC hemispheres as well as the intense field trapping caused by lattice resonances. The presented structure is simple and efficient, and also offers promising applications in broadband thermophotovoltaic devices.

Abstract:A broadband plasmonic metamaterial absorber with near perfect multiband absorption in the infrared region is designed using a metal-insulator-metal configuration and fabricated using photolithography. The metal-insulator-metal configuration consists of a Ti microdisk array, a SiO2 insulator spacer, and an Al bottom layer. The multiband absorption occurs with near perfect absorption at 4.8-7.5 mu m and 9.7-10.5 mu m. Ultra-broadband absorption in the mid-IR wavelength range between 3-14 mu m is realized by adding a rough photoresist layer on top of the periodic microdisk structures. The multiband absorption is achieved through the combined mechanisms including plasmonic surface lattice resonance, gap plasmon resonance, Fabry-Perot cavity resonance, and the intrinsic phonon-polariton absorption of SiO2. Abstract:Infrared broadband absorbers are in great demand in various applications, such as integration into uncooled infrared detectors and microbolometers. In this thesis, we demonstrate and compare three different design methods: coupling multi-sized resonators, inlaying metallic structures in the dielectric layer and choosing laminated dielectric layers made of lossless and lossy materials. Due to their absorption mechanisms, we initially propose a W/ZnTe/W/Ge/W and an embedded Ti/Si/Ti absorber, both of which can achieve ultra-broadband absorption from 8 to 14 μm, with average absorptions of 88% and 92%. We further propose a Ti/Ge/Si3N4/Ti absorbers which can realise near-perfect absorption in the LWIR band, with average absorptions of 95% where all absorption curves exceed 90%. Our study provides the broadband LWIR absorbing structures in addition to providing new insight into the understanding of the interaction of propagating and localised surface plasmon resonances, with the prospect of expanding to other absorbing-structure designs from visible to THz regimes.
