Abstract:A system level model was built according to the dynamic equation of micromachined gyroscope with electromagnetic driving and capacitive detecting and the transfer functions of the interface circuits on Simulink platform in order to reduce the noise of micromachined gyroscope system and enhance system resolution.Mechanical-thermal noise of sensor,electronic-thermal noise of circuits and coupling effects in sensor were added to the model.Therefore,the model not only could get the functional simulation results of gyroscope system,but also could quantify the effect of each noise source on system performance and find the main noise source under different coupling effects.Simulation results show that capacitance-voltage(CV) conversion circuit was the main noise source when the coupling effects in gyroscope were weak;the band-pass filter of gyroscope self-excitation circuit became the main noise source when the coupling effects were robust.Simulation results were validated with the experiment.

Abstract:The macro modeling method for Micro-electro-mechanical System (MEMS) devices is a key issue in the design and simulation of MEMS system. For establishing the macro model of the nonlinear silicon diaphragm drived by a distributed electrostatic force, a nonlinear function fitting scheme was used to calculate the energy data after finite element analysis for establishing an analytical model of kinetic energy, strain energy and electrostatic co-energy of the system. Then, all these energy functions were represented in the term of general mode coordinates and were subjected into the Lagrange equation to deduce the motion equations of the silicon diaphragm. Thus a macro model was obtained to simulate the quasi-static and dynamic characteristics of the device. By comparing the macro model and the finite element calculating, it concludes that the macro model can capture the quasi-state and dynamic behaviors of the electrostatic drive device quite well. And this modeling method can consider the effects of residual stress and nonlinear geometry and can reduce lots of computational cost.

Abstract:The macromodeling method for the nonlinear MEMS devices has become state of the art for fast component and system level simulation. A macromodel construction method is focused in this study,for a nonlinear micro-plate actuated by,a distributed electrostatic force, which is based on a. modal projection method. During the construction of the reduced order model (ROM), the energy date are calculated by several finite analysis running and, a nonlinear function fitting scheme is used, thus an analytical model of kinetic energy, strain energy and electrostatic co-energy of the system have been achieved. Then the generalized motion equations of the rectangle plate represented in the term of a set of general mode coordinates can be obtained according to the Lagrange Equation. This model order reduced method can take the effect of residual stress into account and has a low computational cost. Once the ROM of the device has been generated, it can be reused to simulate the quasistate and dynamics behaviors of the device over a `range of different electric driving waveforms. The calculated results show that the resulting ROM can capture the static/dynamic behaviors of the electrostatically actuated rectangle plate very well.
Resistive Fine Granularity Micromegas: Characterization and Performance for Different Spark Protection Resistive Schemes

Abstract:The aim of the presented work is the development of single-stage amplification resistive Micro Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) based on Micromegas technology with the following characteristics: ability to efficiently operate up to 10 MHz/cm$^2$ counting rate; scalability to large areas; fine granularity readout with small pads of the order of mm$^2$; good spatial and time resolutions (below 100 $\mu$m and 10 ns, respectively). The miniaturization of the readout elements and the optimization of the spark protection system, as well as the stability and robustness under operation, are the primary challenges of the project. Two families of resistive patterns were realized using different techniques: pad-patterned embedded resistors and double-layer of Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) structures foils. Their main difference is that for the embedded resistors the charge is evacuated through independent pads, for double-layer DLC the resistive layers are continuous and uniform and the charge is evacuated through a network of dot-connections, several millimetres apart. Using the DLC technique, a medium-size detector with an active area of 400 cm$^2$ was recently built and tested, with the main results reported in this paper. Additionally, a large module (50x40 cm$^2$ active area), suitable for tiling large systems in future experiments, has been successfully realised and is currently undergoing testing and performance studies. The characterization and performance studies of the detectors were conducted using radioactive sources and an X-rays generator, with the detectors operated with various gas mixtures. A comparison of the results obtained with different resistive layouts and configurations is provided, with a particular focus on the response under high-rate exposure. Key results on tracking and timing performance from test-beam data for the latest constructed medium-size detector are also presented.

Abstract:The Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) have been widely adopted in nuclear and particle physics experiments, for their fast response and other excellent characteristics. To achieve the required signal strength and detection efficiency, sometimes they are operated at a high voltage range. This often challenges the limit of high voltage stability of the detector. Discharge in gaseous detectors is a complex process and involves several responsible factors. The microscopic geometrical structures of the MPGDs may itself sometimes induce discharges. In this study, we are numerically investigating the discharge phenomena in non-resistive Micromegas. Within the COMSOL framework, a 3-dimensional model is developed to observe the occurrence and the development of discharge in Micromegas. The effect of space charge has been taken into account in the calculation. The model allows to vary the geometrical parameters of the detector as well as to study the effects of gas impurities and a different number of primary charges.
First tests of "bulk" MICROMEGAS with resistive cathode mesh

Abstract:We present the first results from tests of a MICROMEGAS detector manufactured using the so-called "bulk" technology and having a resistive cathode mesh instead of the conventional metallic one. This detector operates as usual MICROMEGAS, but in the case of sparks, which may appear at high gas gains, the resistive mesh reduces their current and makes the sparks harmless. This approach could be complementary to the ongoing efforts of various groups to develop spark-protected MICROMEGAS with resistive anode planes.

Abstract:In the last few years our group has focused on developing various designs of spark-protected micropattern gaseous detectors featuring resistive electrodes instead of traditional metallic ones: resistive microstrip counters, resistive gas electron multiplier, resistive micro mesh gaseous structure. These detectors combine in one design the best features of resistive plate chamber (spark-protection) and micropattern detectors (a high position resolution). In this paper we report the progress so far made in developing other types of resistive micropattern detectors: a microdot-microhole detector and a microgap-microstrip detector. The former detector is an optimal electron amplifier for some special designs of dual phase noble liquid time projection chambers, for example with a CsI photocathode immersed inside the noble liquid. Preliminary tests of such a detector, for the first time built and investigated, are reported in this paper. The latter detector is mainly orientated towards medical imaging applications such as x-ray scanners. However, we believe that after a proper gas optimization, these detectors could also achieve a high time resolution and could thus be used in applications as time of flight positron emission tomography, detection of charged particles with simultaneously high time and position resolution etc.

Abstract:The advancement in micro and nano-scale technologies demands in depth understanding of magnetic behaviors. For example, as the ever increasing need for high capacity data storage continuously pushes the boundaries of magnetic recording technology to the physical limits, detailed analysis of the magnetic properties becomes necessary. It is expected that finite element micromagnetics can predict the magnetic behavior with high accuracy taking complex microstructure of magnetic materials into account. In practice, however, the tradeoff is speed and accuracy. This paper reviews the numerical methods used in micromagnetic simulations and presents practical examples in the field of nanotechnology and magnetic recording.
Development of a Simulation Model and Precise Timing Techniques for PICOSEC-Micromegas Detectors

Abstract:This work aims at the development of signal processing algorithms that can explore the potential of a PICOSEC-MicroMegas detector and offers the ability for online, precise timing. The PICOSEC-MicroMegas detector is a novel gaseous detector offering precise timing resolution in experimental measurements. The performance of the proposed signal processing algorithms is evaluated by a variety of tests using experimental data. The data used in the present research were accumulated during a Laser Beam Test at CEA/IRAMIS-SACLAY. We use two sets of experimental events: the SPE-set comprises single photoelectron waveforms, and the EXP-set contains waveforms corresponding to an average of 7.8 photoelectrons. The EXP-set waveforms, when fully analyzed, resulting in a timing resolution of 18.3 $\pm$ \,0.2 ps. Alternative algorithms, based on Constant Threshold Discrimination, but using multi-Charge above the threshold to correct for systematic timing effects, are described and evaluated in detail. Furthermore, a timing technique using Artificial Neural Networks(ANN) has been advanced and evaluated. To generate appropriate learning set for the ANN, a novel simulation model has been developed. We have used the EXP-set waveforms, to quantify the accuracy of the developed techniques and we found that the same timing precision, as in the full signal processing analysis, is achieved. We have also proved that the estimation of the Signal Arrival Time using the developed techniques is consistent and unbiased. Finally, another attractive feature of the newly developed techniques is the fact that they can be used during data acquisition to provide fast timing of the arrival of the particles for triggering and event selection.

A novel resistive anode using a germanium film for Micromegas detectors

Abstract:A germanium film manufactured by vacuum evaporation was studied and used as a novel resistive anode in Micromegas detectors. Its sheet resistivity characteristics, particularly the thickness dependence and long-term evolution of the film, were demonstrated. Resistive anodes help to suppress the discharge of the detector, but also degrade its counting rate capability. For this reason, a fast grounding method to maintain the rate capability was developed and tested. Micromegas prototypes using the germanium anode were tested and verified. The results indicate that the germanium anode can be a good option not only for Micromegas but also for other micro-pattern gaseous detectors.
A Theoretical Model Based on Domain Transition Structure for Transition Gmi Behavior in High Frequency

Abstract:Existing theoretical models on the frequency dependence of the magnetoimpedance (MI) in ferromagnetic microwires can only describe the MI phenomenon at the limiting cases of the lower MHz (< several hundred MHz) or higher GHz (> several GHz) regions. At frequencies between these two regions, known as the transition region, the MI curves usually undergo complex transformations that have not yet been accurately tracked due to the lack of robust broadband measurements. In this study, our broadband measurement design allows us to reveal a relationship between the high frequency MI effect and the magnetic structure of Co-based microwires. A particular magnetic structure consisting of longitudinal domains in the inner core (IC), circular domains in the outer shell (OS) and a transition region (TR) is observed, which originates from compositional gradients and residual stresses during microwire fabrication process. This IC/TR/OS structure is manifested through the complex transformations in the MI behavior exhibiting a turning point at GHz frequencies before the characteristic double MI peak. Based on this, a multilayer planar model is developed, where a more realistic magnetic structure including the TR layer is considered. The model reproduces the main features of the MI curves and yields deeper insight into the high frequency MI phenomenon. Our results not only pave the way to optimizing sensing capabilities of Co-based ferromagnetic microwires but also show the possibility of using our high-frequency MI measurements to map their magnetic microstructures.
A High Precision Signals Readout System for Micromegas Detector Based on the VMM

Abstract:Micromegas detector is a gas detector with parallel plate structure, and it consists of a conversion gap in which radiations liberate ionization electrons and a thin amplification gap. The signal of the micromegas detector consists of two parts: the electron peak and the ion tail. The electronic signal just keeps few nanoseconds, which is used for precise time measurement. The ion signal carries most of the signal energy, and it is used to reconstruct particle energy. The micromegas detector has the advantages of high counting rate, high gain, good time resolution and position resolution, excellent radiation-hardened performance, large sensitive area and readout convenience. This paper introduces a signals readout electronics system for micromegas detector based on VMM chips. The VMM is the front end ASIC to be used in the front end electronics readout system of both the micromegas and sTGC detectors of the New Small Wheels Upgrade project. The VMM is designed by Brookhaven National Laboratory, and each chip is composed of 64 linear front-end channels. Each channel integrates a low-noise charge amplifier (CA) with adaptive feedback, test capacitor, and adjustable polarity (to process either positive or negative charge). Based on those characteristics, the VMM is applicable for the signals readout system of multichannel detectors. The readout system consists of three parts: the front-end board, the data acquisition board, and the host computer with the control software.

Abstract:Micromegas detectors are a relatively modern design concept for micropattern gas detectors, designed to handle high particle flux while providing high gain, high spatial resolution, and fast response times for a variety of radiation detection applications. Due to the advancement of industry, building a micromegas detector without advanced in-house capabilities is now possible. In this work, we present an innovative method to build micromegas detectors utilizing precision manufacturers to fabricate the core components. Two detectors were built using the newly described method and are experimentally validated.

Abstract:After exploring different solutions and testing several options, the high granularity resistive Micromegas technology is now mature enough to offer an efficient operation up to particle rates of 10 MHz/cm 2 , maintaining the gas amplification above 10 4 , with a large margin before breakdown in order to ensure a stable and reliable operation. The detector exploits small-size readout pads for occupancy reduction and a double Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) resistive layer with a network of dot-connections to ground for a fast charge evacuation. The double-layer allows preserving the minimum resistance to suppress the discharge intensity for stable operations. The performance measured with particle beams at CERN have shown a spatial resolution below 100 μm for mm-wide readout pads and a few ns time resolution. Now, the technology is being scaled to larger areas, with the construction of detectors with an active area of ∼20×20 cm 2 (already achieved) and new ∼40×50 cm 2 prototypes under construction. An overview of the detector technology, including the latest results, is presented in terms of the gain and rate capability (measured in the laboratory) and efficiency, time and spatial resolution (measured at the CERN SPS). Possible applications in HEP experiments, as well as future developments, are also reported.

Abstract:The paper summarizes our latest progress in the development of newly introduced micro pattern gaseous detectors with resistive electrodes. These resistive electrodes protect the detector and the front-end electronics in case of occasional discharges and thus make the detectors very robust and reliable in operation. As an example, we describe in greater detail a new recently developed GEM-like detector, fully spark-protected with electrodes made of resistive kapton. We discovered that all resistive layers used in these studies (including kapton), that are coated with photosensitive layers, such as CsI, can be used as efficient photo cathodes for detectors operating in a pulse counting mode. We describe the first applications of such detectors combined with CsI or SbCs photo cathodes for the detection of UV photons at room and cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract:Computational micromagnetics requires numerical solution of partial differential equations to resolve complex interactions in magnetic nanomaterials. The Virtual Micromagnetics project described here provides virtual machine simulation environments to run open-source micromagnetic simulation packages. These environments allow easy access to simulation packages that are often difficult to compile and install, and enable simulations and their data to be shared and stored in a single virtual hard disk file, which encourages reproducible research. Virtual Micromagnetics can be extended to automate the installation of micromagnetic simulation packages on non-virtual machines, and to support closed-source and new open-source simulation packages, including packages from disciplines other than micromagnetics, encouraging reuse. Virtual Micromagnetics is stored in a public GitHub repository under a three-clause Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) license.

High-Rate Capable Floating Strip Micromegas

Abstract:We report on the optimization of discharge insensitive floating strip Micromegas (MICRO-MEsh GASeous) detectors, fit for use in high-energy muon spectrometers. The suitability of these detectors for particle tracking is shown in high-background environments and at very high particle fluxes up to 60MHz/cm$^2$. Measurement and simulation of the microscopic discharge behavior have demonstrated the excellent discharge tolerance. A floating strip Micromegas with an active area of 48cm$\times$50cm with 1920 copper anode strips exhibits in 120GeV pion beams a spatial resolution of 50$\mu$m at detection efficiencies above 95%. Pulse height, spatial resolution and detection efficiency are homogeneous over the detector. Reconstruction of particle track inclination in a single detector plane is discussed, optimum angular resolutions below $5^\circ$ are observed. Systematic deviations of this $\mu$TPC-method are fully understood. The reconstruction capabilities for minimum ionizing muons are investigated in a 6.4cm$\times$6.4cm floating strip Micromegas under intense background irradiation of the whole active area with 20MeV protons at a rate of 550kHz. The spatial resolution for muons is not distorted by space charge effects. A 6.4cm$\times$6.4cm floating strip Micromegas doublet with low material budget is investigated in highly ionizing proton and carbon ion beams at particle rates between 2MHz and 2GHz. Stable operation up to the highest rates is observed, spatial resolution, detection efficiencies, the multi-hit and high-rate capability are discussed.

Development Of The Micro-D Is Placement Amplifier For A Novel Tester Measuring Mechanical Properties Of Mems Materials

Abstract:For the purpose of measuring the mechanical properties of MEMS materials, a novel integrated instrument called the Micro-load and displacement tester (MLDT) characterized by long-range and high-resolution is developed. The loading mechanism of the tester is designed to be a monolithic two-stage flexure hinged structure due to measurement needs. In order to realize maximum output displacement more than 50 mu m and output force more than IN of the first-stage, a flexure hinged micro-displacement amplifier driven by piezoelectric (PZT) actuator is designed, whose structural parameters are determined by means of the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization method. A finite element (FE) model about the amplifier is established and FE analysis was performed. Some tests are carried out to an amplifier prototype, which is fabricated with Electro-discharge machining (EDM) technique. Experimental results show that the maximum output displacement can reach 53.12 mu m and the displacement resolution is less than 10 nm, which is consistent closely with the FE prediction and satisfies the loading requirements.

Abstract:This paper presents modeling and system-level simulation of a micromachined electrostatically suspended gyroscope (MESG). The MESG reported here employs a spinning wheel-like rotor, which is suspended by electrostatic force without any mechanical support. With the precession of the rotor sensed capacitively, stator electrodes rebalance the rotor to its null position by an electrostatic feedback control system. This force-feedback system is constructed based on CoventorWare, with which MEMS devices develop faster, higher quality, lower cost and easier optimizing, using both bottom-up and top-down approaches. The former approach creates 3D solid gyro model according to its fabrication process, while the latter one is to combine behavioral models and IC components together, which two are complementary to each other.

Abstract:This study presents the development of an integrated device for measuring magnetoelastic resonance, utilizing a gain/phase detector and the Arduino platform. The device stands out for its simplicity, low cost, and efficiency. It employs the Arduino's ATmega328P microcontroller, coupled with the AD8302, and an intuitive graphical interface developed in Python, which facilitates the measurement of magnetoelastic signals in sensors. The device's validation is carried out through measurements of mass deposits on magnetoelastic sensors, confirming its accuracy and functionality. This advancement offers a practical and portable solution for detecting magnetoelastic resonances, promoting the use of these technologies in field environments and in diverse scientific applications. The integration of components into a compact, robust, and low-cost electronic circuit, along with an easy-to-operate graphical interface, significantly simplifies the complexity of the components, making the equipment complete and readily operational.
