Abstract:The present paper proposes a new and systematic approach to the so-called black box group methods in computational group theory. Instead of a single black box, we consider categories of black boxes and their morphisms. This makes new classes of black box problems accessible. For example, we can enrich black box groups by actions of outer automorphisms. As an example of application of this technique, we construct Frobenius maps on black box groups of untwisted Lie type in odd characteristic (Section 6) and inverse-transpose automorphisms on black box groups encrypting ${\rm (P)SL}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. One of the advantages of our approach is that it allows us to work in black box groups over finite fields of big characteristic. Another advantage is explanatory power of our methods; as an example, we explain Kantor's and Kassabov's construction of an involution in black box groups encrypting ${\rm SL}_2(2^n)$. Due to the nature of our work we also have to discuss a few methodological issues of the black box group theory. The paper is further development of our text "Fifty shades of black" [arXiv:1308.2487], and repeats parts of it, but under a weaker axioms for black box groups.

Abstract:We explore the relationship between possibility measures (supremum preserving normed measures) and p-boxes (pairs of cumulative distribution functions) on totally preordered spaces, extending earlier work in this direction by De Cooman and Aeyels, among others. We start by demonstrating that only those p-boxes who have 0–1-valued lower or upper cumulative distribution function can be possibility measures, and we derive expressions for their natural extension in this case. Next, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a p-box to be a possibility measure. Finally, we show that almost every possibility measure can be modelled by a p-box, simply by ordering elements by increasing possibility. Whence, any techniques for p-boxes can be readily applied to possibility measures. We demonstrate this by deriving joint possibility measures from marginals, under varying assumptions of independence, using a technique known for p-boxes. Doing so, we arrive at a new rule of combination for possibility measures, for the independent case.

Abstract:A pair of lower and upper cumulative distribution functions, also called probability box or p-box, is among the most popular models used in imprecise probability theory. They arise naturally in expert elicitation, for instance in cases where bounds are specified on the quantiles of a random variable, or when quantiles are specified only at a finite number of points. Many practical and formal results concerning p-boxes already exist in the literature. In this paper, we provide new efficient tools to construct multivariate p-boxes and develop algorithms to draw inferences from them. For this purpose, we formalise and extend the theory of p-boxes using Walley's behavioural theory of imprecise probabilities, and heavily rely on its notion of natural extension and existing results about independence modeling. In particular, we allow p-boxes to be defined on arbitrary totally preordered spaces, hence thereby also admitting multivariate p-boxes via probability bounds over any collection of nested sets. We focus on the cases of independence (using the factorization property), and of unknown dependence (using the Fréchet bounds), and we show that our approach extends the probabilistic arithmetic of Williamson and Downs. Two design problems---a damped oscillator, and a river dike---demonstrate the practical feasibility of our results.

Choiceless Computation and Symmetry: Limitations of Definability

Abstract:The search for a logic capturing PTIME is a long standing open problem in finite model theory. One of the most promising candidate logics for this is Choiceless Polynomial Time with counting (CPT). Abstractly speaking, CPT is an isomorphism-invariant computation model working with hereditarily finite sets as data structures. While it is easy to check that the evaluation of CPT-sentences is possible in polynomial time, the converse has been open for more than 20 years: Can every PTIME-decidable property of finite structures be expressed in CPT? We attempt to make progress towards a negative answer and show that Choiceless Polynomial Time cannot compute a preorder with colour classes of logarithmic size in every hypercube. The reason is that such preorders have super-polynomially many automorphic images, which makes it impossible for CPT to define them. While the computation of such a preorder is not a decision problem that would immediately separate P and CPT, it is significant for the following reason: The so-called Cai-Fürer-Immerman (CFI) problem is one of the standard benchmarks for logics and maybe best known for separating fixed-point logic with counting (FPC) from P. Hence, it is natural to consider this also a potential candidate for the separation of CPT and P. The strongest known positive result in this regard says that CPT is able to solve CFI if a preorder with logarithmically sized colour classes is present in the input structure. Our result implies that this approach cannot be generalised to unordered inputs. In other words, CFI on unordered hypercubes is a PTIME-problem which provably cannot be tackled with the state-of-the-art choiceless algorithmic techniques.

Abstract:In this article we study a coarse version of the $K$-theoretic Farrell--Jones conjecture we call coarse or bounded isomorphism conjecture. Using controlled category theory we are able to translate this conjecture for asymptotically faithful covers into a more familiar form. This allows us to prove the conjecture for box spaces of residually finite groups whose Farrell--Jones assembly map with coefficients is an isomorphism.

Ordered Graph Limits and Their Applications

Abstract:The emerging theory of graph limits exhibits an analytic perspective on graphs, showing that many important concepts and tools in graph theory and its applications can be described more naturally (and sometimes proved more easily) in analytic language. We extend the theory of graph limits to the ordered setting, presenting a limit object for dense vertex-ordered graphs, which we call an orderon. As a special case, this yields limit objects for matrices whose rows and columns are ordered, and for dynamic graphs that expand (via vertex insertions) over time. Along the way, we devise an ordered locality-preserving variant of the cut distance between ordered graphs, showing that two graphs are close with respect to this distance if and only if they are similar in terms of their ordered subgraph frequencies. We show that the space of orderons is compact with respect to this distance notion, which is key to a successful analysis of combinatorial objects through their limits. We derive several applications of the ordered limit theory in extremal combinatorics, sampling, and property testing in ordered graphs. In particular, we prove a new ordered analogue of the well-known result by Alon and Stav [RS\&A'08] on the furthest graph from a hereditary property; this is the first known result of this type in the ordered setting. Unlike the unordered regime, here the random graph model $G(n, p)$ with an ordering over the vertices is not always asymptotically the furthest from the property for some $p$. However, using our ordered limit theory, we show that random graphs generated by a stochastic block model, where the blocks are consecutive in the vertex ordering, are (approximately) the furthest. Additionally, we describe an alternative analytic proof of the ordered graph removal lemma [Alon et al., FOCS'17].

Abstract:We propose a class of nonlocal boxes named functional boxes which include a generalization of the Popescu-Rohrlich(PR) box as a special case. We show that every functional box corresponding to an additively inseparable function can make communication complexity trivial and thus seems unlikely to exist in nature. Then we relate general nonlocal boxes to these functional boxes, and derive several limits on them from the principle of information causality.

Abstract:In the context of positive infinite-dimensional linear systems, we systematically study $L^p$-admissible control and observation operators with respect to the limit-cases $p=\infty$ and $p=1$, respectively. This requires an in-depth understanding of the order structure on the extrapolation space $X_{-1}$, which we provide. These properties of $X_{-1}$ also enable us to discuss when zero-class admissibility is automatic. While those limit-cases are the weakest form of admissibility on the $L^p$-scale, it is remarkable that they sometimes follow from order theoretic and geometric assumptions. Our assumptions on the geometries of the involved spaces are minimal.

Abstract:Complex information-processing systems, for example quantum circuits, cryptographic protocols, or multi-player games, are naturally described as networks composed of more basic information-processing systems. A modular analysis of such systems requires a mathematical model of systems that is closed under composition, i.e., a network of these objects is again an object of the same type. We propose such a model and call the corresponding systems causal boxes. Causal boxes capture superpositions of causal structures, e.g., messages sent by a causal box A can be in a superposition of different orders or in a superposition of being sent to box B and box C. Furthermore, causal boxes can model systems whose behavior depends on time. By instantiating the Abstract Cryptography framework with causal boxes, we obtain the first composable security framework that can handle arbitrary quantum protocols and relativistic protocols.

Abstract:An astonishing feature of higher-order quantum theory is that it can accommodate indefinite causal order. In the simplest bipartite setting, there exist signaling correlations for which it is fundamentally impossible to ascribe a definite causal order for the parties' actions. Moreover, the assumptions required to arrive at such a statement (local quantum transformations and well-behaved probabilities) result in a nontrivial set of correlations, whose boundary is, to date, uncharacterized. In this work, we investigate indefinite causal order in boxworld theories. We construct a higher-order theory whose descriptor is the generalized bit (gbit) - the natural successor of the classical bit and quantum qubit. By fixing the local transformations in boxworld and asking about the global causal structure, we find that we trivially recover the full set of two-way signaling correlations. In light of this, we motivate and propose two physical principles in order to limit the set of achievable correlations: nonsignaling preservation and no signaling without system exchange. We find that a higher-order boxworld theory that respects these physical principles leads to (i) a nontrivial set of achievable correlations and (ii) a violation of some causal inequalities that is higher than what can be achieved in higher-order quantum theory. These results lead us to conjecture that the set of correlations of our higher-order boxworld theory is an outer approximation to the set of correlations produced by higher-order quantum theory.

Enriched Presheaf Model of Quantum FPC

Abstract:Selinger gave a superoperator model of a first-order quantum programming language and proved that it is fully definable and hence fully abstract. This paper proposes an extension of the superoperator model to higher-order programs based on modules over superoperators or, equivalently, enriched presheaves over the category of superoperators. The enriched presheaf category can be easily proved to be a model of intuitionistic linear logic with cofree exponential, from which one can cave out a model of classical linear logic by a kind of bi-orthogonality construction. Although the structures of an enriched presheaf category are usually rather complex, a morphism in the classical model can be expressed simply as a matrix of completely positive maps. The model inherits many desirable properties from the superoperator model. A conceptually interesting property is that our model has only a state whose "total probability" is bounded by 1, i.e. does not have a state where true and false each occur with probability 2/3. Another convenient property inherited from the superoperator model is a $\omega$CPO-enrichment. Remarkably, our model has a sufficient structure to interpret arbitrary recursive types by the standard domain theoretic technique. We introduce Quantum FPC, a quantum $\lambda$-calculus with recursive types, and prove that our model is a fully abstract model of Quantum FPC.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new constraint domain for reasoning about data with uncertainty. It extends convex modeling with the notion of p-box to gain additional quantifiable information on the data whereabouts. Unlike existing approaches, the p-box envelops an unknown probability instead of approximating its representation. The p-box bounds are uniform cumulative distribution functions (cdf) in order to employ linear computations in the probabilistic domain. The reasoning by means of p-box cdf-intervals is an interval computation which is exerted on the real domain then it is projected onto the cdf domain. This operation conveys additional knowledge represented by the obtained probabilistic bounds. The empirical evaluation of our implementation shows that, with minimal overhead, the output solution set realizes a full enclosure of the data along with tighter bounds on its probabilistic distributions.

Abstract:The universal C*-algebras of discrete product systems generalize the Toeplitz- Cuntz algebras and the Toeplitz algebras of discrete semigroups. We consider a semigroup P which is quasi-lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, and, for a product system p:E\to P, we study those representations of E, called covariant, which respect the lattice structure of P. We identify a class of product systems, which we call compactly aligned, for which there is a purely C*-algebraic characterization of covariance, and study the algebra C*_{cov}(P,E) which is universal for covariant representations of E. Our main theorem is a characterization of the faithful representations of C*_{cov}(P,E) when P is the positive cone of a free product of totally-ordered amenable groups.

Abstract:In this article, we establish various facts about extremizers for $L^p$-improving convolution operators $T\colon L^p \rightarrow L^q$ associated with compactly-supported probability measures on either $\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{T}^d$ . If $\sigma$ has positive Fourier decay, we prove that extremizers exist and extremizing sequences are precompact modulo translation for all "non-endpoint" $(p,q)$. These extremizers also satisfy an interesting positivity property and belong to $C_{loc}^\infty \cap L^\infty$.

Abstract:We prove a general black box result which produces algebras of pseudodifferential operators (ps.d.o.s) on noncompact manifolds, together with a precise principal symbol calculus. Our construction (which also applies in parameter-dependent settings, with phase space weights and variable differential and decay orders) recovers most of the ps.d.o. algebras which have been introduced in recent years as tools for the microlocal analysis of non-elliptic partial differential equations. This includes those used for proving resolvent bounds (b- and scattering algebras and resolved or semiclassical versions thereof), studying waves on asymptotically flat spacetimes (3b-, edge-b-, and desc-algebras), inverting geodesic X-ray transforms (semiclassical foliation and 1-cusp algebras), and many others. Our main result rests on the novel notion of manifolds with scaled bounded geometry. A scaling encodes, in each distinguished chart of a manifold with bounded geometry, the amounts in $(0,1]$ by which the components of a uniformly bounded vector field are scaled. This decouples the regularity of the coefficients of elements of the resulting Lie algebra $\mathcal{V}$ of vector fields from the pointwise size of their coefficients. When the scaling tends to $0$ at infinity, the approximate constancy of coefficients of elements of $\mathcal{V}$ on increasingly large cubes, as measured using $\mathcal{V}$, gives rise to a principal symbol which captures $\mathcal{V}$-operators modulo operators of lower differential order and more decay.
