Abstract:In this paper, we present a new, necessary, and sufficient condition for which the supremum A∨B exists with respect to the logic order ≼. Moreover, we give out a new and much simpler representation of A∨B with respect to ≼. Our results have nice physical meanings.

Abstract:In 2006, Gudder [Math. Slovaca 56, 573 (2006)] introduced a logic order ≼ on bounded quantum observable set S(H). In 2007, Pulmannova and Vincekova [Math Slovaca 57, 589 (2007)] proved that for each subset D of S(H), the infimum of D exists with respect to the logic order ≼. In 2008, Liu and Wu [J. Math. Phys. 49, 073521 (2008)] found a representation of the infimum A∧B for A,B∊S(H), and by using the limit methods, they gave out a representation for the infimum of D. But, that representation is complicated. In this paper, we present a simpler spectral representation for the infimum of D with respect to the logic order ≼.

Abstract:We derive by lattice theory a universal quantum certainty relation for arbitrary $M$ observables in $N$-dimensional system, which provides a state-independent maximum lower bound on the direct-sum of the probability distribution vectors (PDVs) in terms of majorization relation. While the utmost lower bound coincides with $(1/N,...,1/N)$ for any two orthogonal bases, the majorization certainty relation for $M\geqslant3$ is shown to be nontrivial. The universal majorization bounds for three mutually complementary observables and a more general set of observables in dimension-2 are achieved. It is found that one cannot prepare a quantum state with PDVs of incompatible observables spreading out arbitrarily. Moreover, we obtain a complementary relation for the quantum coherence as well, which characterizes a trade-off relation of quantum coherence with different bases.

Provable better quasi orders

Abstract:It has recently been shown that fairly strong axiom systems such as $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ cannot prove that the antichain with three elements is a better quasi order ($\mathsf{bqo}$). In the present paper, we give a complete characterization of the finite partial orders that are provably $\mathsf{bqo}$ in such axiom systems. The result will also be extended to infinite orders. As an application, we derive that a version of the minimal bad array lemma is weak over $\mathsf{ACA_0}$. In sharp contrast, a recent result shows that the same version is equivalent to $\Pi^1_2$-comprehension over the stronger base theory $\mathsf{ATR}_0$.

Abstract:Quantum discord is viewed as the measure of quantum correlation which can be nonzero even when entanglement in the system is zero. We study two properties of quantum discord: the upper bound and the continuity. We prove the upper bound of quantum discord in terms of the coherent information for any quantum state and discuss the condition for the reachable upper bound. If two states are close to each other, then we find that quantum discord has little change and provides a bound with respect to this small change.
Quantum set theory: Equality and order of internal reals defined through different quantum conditionals

Abstract:In quantum logic, there is a well-known arbitrariness in choosing a binary operation for conditionals. We currently have three candidates: the Sasaki conditional, the contrapositive Sasaki conditional, and the relevance conditional. A fundamental problem is to show how the form of the conditional follows from an analysis of experimental concepts in quantum theory. Here, we attempt such an analysis through quantum set theory. For each of the above conditionals, we previously introduced an interpretation of quantum set theory, a quantum logical truth value assignment to every set-theoretical statement, that satisfies both the full forms of De Morgan's laws and the transfer principle. In the present study, we explore the structure of the internal reals based on the new interpretations with different conditionals. We show that the externally defined set of the internal reals is identical for each choice among the above three conditionals, and that for the logic represented by a projection lattice on a Hilbert space, the internal reals are in one-to-one correspondence with the self-adjoint operators (or equivalently, quantum observables) affiliated with the von Neumann algebra generated by the logic. Moreover, we show that the truth values for their equality are also irrespective of the choice among the conditionals. Interestingly, however, the truth values for the order relation significantly depend on the underlying conditionals, whereas the order relation holds with the full truth value if and only if their corresponding self-adjoint operators satisfy Olson's spectral order relation irrespective of the choice of the conditional. We describe the difference of the interpretations of the order relation for two internal reals in terms of the order relation, well defined in quantum mechanics, of outcomes from the successive projective measurements of the corresponding two quantum observables.

Abstract:In this Brief Report, we prove that an analytically solvable two-qubit entanglement monotone introduced by Zhang et al. [Phys. Rev. A 76, 032306 (2007)] is no greater than the square of concurrence. This proof is based on the equivalence between Zhang et al.'s monotone and an observable entanglement measure for mixed states suggested by Mintert and Buchleitner [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 140505 (2007)]. Our result may clarify the connections between several recently defined entanglement measures and help understand their possible applications in quantum-information theory.

Abstract:In order to provide a unified semantics for non-commutative algebraic logic, based on posets, Rump and Yang introduced the concept of quantum B -algebras. In this paper, we mainly consider the construction of quantum B -algebras over posets. We prove that a finite poset can support a quantum B -algebra if and only if its every connected component has a greatest element. However, such a result for infinite posets is not necessarily true. Under certain conditions, some interesting results for a poset to support quantum B -algebra are provided.

Abstract:Partial Boolean algebra underlies the quantum logic as an important tool for quantum contextuality. We propose the notion \textit{atom graphs} to reveal the graph structure of partial Boolean algebra for quantum systems by proving that (i) the partial Boolean algebras for quantum systems are determined by their atom graphs; (ii) the states on atom graphs can be extended uniquely to the partial Boolean algebras, and (iii) each exclusivity graph is an induced graph of an atom graph. (i) and (ii) show that the quantum systems are uniquely determined by their atom graphs. which proves the reasonability of graphs as the models of quantum experiments. (iii) establishes a connection between partial Boolean algebra and exclusivity graphs, and introduces a method to express the exclusivity experiments more precisely. We also present a general and parametric description for Kochen-Specker theorem based on graphs, which gives a type of non-contextuality inequality for KS contextuality.

Abstract:We give an alternative proof of a fact that a finite continuous non-decreasing submodular set function on a measurable space can be expressed as a supremum of measures dominated by the function, if there exists a class of sets which is totally ordered with respect to inclusion and generates the sigma-algebra of the space. The proof is elementary in the sense that the measure attaining the supremum in the claim is constructed by a standard extension theorem of measures. As a consequence, a uniquness of the supremum attaining measure also follows. A Polish space is an examples of the measurable space which has a class of totally ordered sets that generates the Borel sigma-algebra.

Abstract:We consider orthomodular posets endowed with a symmetric difference. We call them ODPs. Expressed in the quantum logic language, we consider quantum logics with an XOR-type connective. We study three classes of "almost Boolean" ODPs, two of them defined by requiring rather specific behaviour of infima and the third by a Boolean-like behaviour of Frink ideals. We establish a (rather surprising) inclusion between the three classes, shadding thus light on their intrinsic properties. (More details can be found in the Introduction that follows.) Let us only note that the orthomodular posets pursued here, though close to Boolean algebras (i.e., close to standard quantum logics), still have a potential for an arbitrarily high degree of non-compatibility and hence they may enrich the studies of mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Based on an intuitive generalization of the Leibniz principle of `the identity of indiscernibles', we introduce a novel ontological notion of classicality, called bounded ontological distinctness. Formulated as a principle, bounded ontological distinctness equates the distinguishability of a set of operational physical entities to the distinctness of their ontological counterparts. Employing three instances of two-dimensional quantum preparations, we demonstrate the violation of bounded ontological distinctness or excess ontological distinctness of quantum preparations, without invoking any additional assumptions. Moreover, our methodology enables the inference of tight lower bounds on the extent of excess ontological distinctness of quantum preparations. Similarly, we demonstrate excess ontological distinctness of quantum transformations, using three two-dimensional unitary transformations. However, to demonstrate excess ontological distinctness of quantum measurements, an additional assumption such as outcome determinism or bounded ontological distinctness of preparations is required. Moreover, we show that quantum violations of other well-known ontological principles implicate quantum excess ontological distinctness. Finally, to showcase the operational vitality of excess ontological distinctness, we introduce two distinct classes of communication tasks powered by excess ontological distinctness.

Abstract:We discuss the uniqueness of quantum states compatible with given results for measuring a set of observables. For a given pure state, we consider two different types of uniqueness: (1) no other pure state is compatible with the same measurement results and (2) no other state, pure or mixed, is compatible with the same measurement results. For case (1), it is known that for a d-dimensional Hilbert space, there exists a set of 4d-5 observables that uniquely determines any pure state. We show that for case (2), 5d-7 observables suffice to uniquely determine any pure state. Thus there is a gap between the results for (1) and (2), and we give some examples to illustrate this. The case of observables corresponding to reduced density matrices (RDMs) of a multipartite system is also discussed, where we improve known bounds on local dimensions for case (2) in which almost all pure states are uniquely determined by their RDMs. We further discuss circumstances where (1) can imply (2). We use convexity of the numerical range of operators to show that when only two observables are measured, (1) always implies (2). More generally, if there is a compact group of symmetries of the state space which has the span of the observables measured as the set of fixed points, then (1) implies (2). We analyze the possible dimensions for the span of such observables. Our results extend naturally to the case of low rank quantum states.

Abstract:In this note we contribute to the recently developing study of "almost Boolean" quantum logics (i.e. to the study of orthomodular partially ordered sets that are naturally endowed with a symmetric difference). We call them enriched quantum logics (EQLs). We first consider set-representable EQLs. We disprove a natural conjecture on compatibility in EQLs. Then we discuss the possibility of extending states and prove an extension result for $\Ztwo$-states on EQLs. In the second part we pass to general orthoposets with a symmetric difference (GEQLs). We show that a simplex can be a state space of a GEQL that has an arbitrarily high degree of noncompatibility. Finally, we find an appropriate definition of a "parametrization" as a mapping between GEQLs that preserves the set-representation.

Abstract:We investigate the combinatorial structure of the set of maximal antichains in a Boolean algebra ordered by almost refinement. We also consider the reaping relation and its associated cardinal invariants, focusing in particular on reduced powers of Boolean algebras. As an application, we obtain that, on the one hand, the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is greater than or equal to the cofinality of the meagre ideal and, on the other hand, a suitable parametrized diamond principle implies that the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is equal to $\aleph_1$.

Extreme quantum states and processes, and extreme points of general spectrahedra in finite dimensional algebras

Abstract:Convex sets of quantum states and processes play a central role in quantum theory and quantum information. Many important examples of convex sets in quantum theory are spectrahedra, that is, sets of positive operators subject to affine constraints. These examples include sets of quantum states with given expectation values of some observables of interest, sets of multipartite quantum states with given marginals, sets of quantum measurements, channels, and multitime quantum processes, as well as sets of higher-order quantum maps and quantum causal structures. This contribution provides a characterisation of the extreme points of general spectrahedra, and bounds on the ranks of the corresponding operators. The general results are applied to several special cases, and are used to retrieve classic results such as Choi's characterisation of the extreme quantum channels, Parhasarathy's characterisation of the extreme quantum states with given marginals, and the quantum version of Birkhoff's theorem for qubit unital channels. Finally, we propose a notion of positive operator valued measures (POVMs) with general affine constraints for their normalisation, and we characterise the extremal POVMs.
