Abstract:We investigate sigma-entangled linear orders and narrowness of Boolean algebras. We show existence of sigma-entangled linear orders in many cardinals, and we build Boolean algebras with neither large chains nor large pies. We study the behavior of these notions in ultraproducts.

Abstract:We find a strong separation between two natural families of simple rank one theories in Keisler's order: the theories $T_\mathfrak{m}$ reflecting graph sequences, which witness that Keisler's order has the maximum number of classes, and the theories $T_{n,k}$, which are the higher-order analogues of the triangle-free random graph. The proof involves building Boolean algebras and ultrafilters "by hand" to satisfy certain model theoretically meaningful chain conditions. This may be seen as advancing a line of work going back through Kunen's construction of good ultrafilters in ZFC using families of independent functions. We conclude with a theorem on flexible ultrafilters, and open questions.

On minimal non-$σ$-scattered linear orders

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to give new constructions of linear orders which are minimal with respect to being non-$\sigma$-scattered. Specifically, we will show that Jensen's principle $\diamondsuit$ implies that there is a minimal Countryman line, answering a question of Baumgartner. We also produce the first consistent examples of minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality greater than $\aleph_1$, as given a successor cardinal $\kappa^+$, we obtain such linear orderings of cardinality $\kappa^+$ with the additional property that their square is the union of $\kappa$-many chains. We give two constructions: directly building such examples using forcing, and also deriving their existence from combinatorial principles. The latter approach shows that such minimal non-$\sigma$-scattered linear orders of cardinality $\kappa^+$ exist for every cardinal $\kappa$ in Gödel's constructible universe, and also (using work of Rinot) that examples must exist at successors of singular strong limit cardinals in the absence of inner models satisfying the existence of a measurable cardinal $\mu$ of Mitchell order $\mu^{++}$.

Abstract:We address several questions of Donald Monk related to irredundance and spread of Boolean algebras, gaining both some ZFC knowledge and consistency results. We show in ZFC that irr(B_0 times B_1)= max(irr(B_0),irr(B_1)). We prove consistency of the statement ``there is a Boolean algebra B such that irr(B)<s(B otimes B)'' and we force a superatomic Boolean algebra B_* such that s(B_*)=inc(B_*)=kappa, irr(B_*)=Id(B_*)=kappa^+ and Sub(B_*)=2^(kappa^+). Next we force a superatomic algebra B_0 such that irr(B_0)<inc(B_0) and a superatomic algebra B_1 such that t(B_1)>Aut(B_1). Finally we show that consistently there is a Boolean algebra B of size lambda such that there is no free sequence in B of length lambda, there is an ultrafilter of tightness lambda (so t(B)=lambda) and lambda notin Depth_(Hs)(B).

Numerical Calculation of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Effects Using TraFiC4

Abstract:Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) occurs when short bunches travel on strongly bent trajectories. Its effects on high-quality beams can be severe and are well understood qualitatively. For quantitative results, however, one has to rely on numerical methods. There exist several simulation codes utilizing different approaches. We describe in some detail the code TraFiC4 developed at DESY for design and analysis purposes, which approaches the problem from first principles and solves the equations of motion either perturbatively or self-consistently. We present some calculational results and comparison with experimental data. Also, we give examples of how the code can be used to design beamlines with minimal emittance growth due to CSR.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a preliminary investigation of subclasses of bounded posets with antitone involution which are "pastings" of their maximal Kleene sub-lattices. Specifically, we introduce super-paraorthomodular lattices, namely paraothomodular lattices whose order determines, and it is fully determined by, the order of their maximal Kleene sub-algebras. It will turn out that the (spectral) paraorthomodular lattice of effects over a separable Hilbert space can be considered as a prominent example of such. Therefore, it arguably provides an algebraic/order theoretical rendering of complementarity phenomena between unsharp observables. A number of examples, properties and characterization theorems for structures we deal with will be outlined. For example, we prove a forbidden configuration theorem and we investigate the notion of commutativity for modular pseudo-Kleene lattices, examples of which are (spectral) paraorthomodular lattices of effects over finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Finally, we show that structures introduced in this paper yield paraconsistent partial referential matrices, the latter being generalizations of J. Czelakowski's partial referential matrices. As a consequence, a link between some classes of posets with antitone involution and algebras of partial "unsharp" propositions is established.

Abstract:We investigate the combinatorial structure of the set of maximal antichains in a Boolean algebra ordered by almost refinement. We also consider the reaping relation and its associated cardinal invariants, focusing in particular on reduced powers of Boolean algebras. As an application, we obtain that, on the one hand, the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is greater than or equal to the cofinality of the meagre ideal and, on the other hand, a suitable parametrized diamond principle implies that the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is equal to $\aleph_1$.

Abstract:The shuffle of a non-empty countable set $ S $ of linear orders is the (unique up to isomorphism) linear order $ \Xi(S) $ obtained by fixing a coloring function $ \chi: \mathbb{Q} \to S $ having fibers dense in $ \mathbb{Q} $ and replacing each rational $ q $ in $ (\mathbb{Q}, <) $ with an isomorphic copy of $ \chi(q) $. We prove that any two countable shuffles that embed as convex subsets into each other are order isomorphic.

Highly-entangled stationary states from strong symmetries

Abstract:We find that the presence of strong non-Abelian conserved quantities can lead to highly entangled stationary states even for unital quantum channels. We derive exact expressions for the bipartite logarithmic negativity, Rényi negativities, and operator space entanglement for stationary states restricted to one symmetric subspace, with focus on the trivial subspace. We prove that these apply to open quantum evolutions whose commutants, characterizing all strongly conserved quantities, correspond to either the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra or to the Read-Saleur commutants. The latter provides an example of quantum fragmentation, whose dimension is exponentially large in system size. We find a general upper bound for all these quantities given by the logarithm of the dimension of the commutant on the smaller bipartition of the chain. As Abelian examples, we show that strong U($1$) symmetries and classical fragmentation lead to separable stationary states in any symmetric subspace. In contrast, for non-Abelian SU$(N)$ symmetries, both logarithmic and Rényi negativities scale logarithmically with system size. Finally, we prove that while Rényi negativities with $n>2$ scale logarithmically with system size, the logarithmic negativity (as well as generalized Rényi negativities with $n<2$) exhibits a volume law scaling for the Read-Saleur commutants. Our derivations rely on the commutant possessing a Hopf algebra structure in the limit of infinitely large systems, and hence also apply to finite groups and quantum groups.

Abstract:We investigate classes of Boolean algebras related to the notion of forcing that adds Cohen reals. A >>Cohen algebra<< is a Boolean algebra that is dense in the completion of a free Boolean algebra. We introduce and study generalizations of Cohen algebras: semi-Cohen algebras, pseudo-Cohen algebras and potentially Cohen algebras. These classes of Boolean algebras are closed under completion.

Abstract:We demonstrate that any $\Pi_\alpha$ sentence of the infinitary logic $L_{\omega_1 \omega}$ extending the theory of linear orderings has a model with a $\Pi_{\alpha+4}$ Scott sentence and hence of Scott rank at most $\alpha+3$. In other words, the gap between the complexity of the theory and the complexity of the simplest model is always bounded by $4$. This contrasts the situation with general structures where for any $\alpha$ there is a $\Pi_2$ sentence all of whose models have Scott rank $\alpha$. We also give new lower bounds, though there remains a small gap between our lower and upper bounds: For most (but not all) $\alpha$, we construct a $\Pi_\alpha$ sentence extending the theory of linear orderings such that no models have a $\Sigma_{\alpha+2}$ Scott sentence and hence no models have Scott rank less than or equal to $\alpha$.

Abstract:We provide the geometric construction of a series of generalized Schur algebras of any type via Borel-Moore homologies and equivariant K-groups of generalized Steinberg varieties. As applications, we obtain a Schur algebra analogue of the local geometric Langlands correspondence of any finite type, provide an equivariant K-theoretic realization of quasi-split $\imath$quantum groups of affine type AIII, and establish a geometric Howe duality for affine ($\imath$-)quantum groups.

Abstract:The following is a 2008 conjecture of Abraham, Bonnet and Kubiś: [ABK Conjecture] Every well quasi order (wqo) is a countable union of better quasi orders (bqo). We obtain a partial progress on the conjecture, by showing that the class of orders that are a countable union of better quasi orders (sigma-bqo) is closed under various operations. These include diverse products, such as the Dress-Shieffels product. We develop various properties of the latter product. In relation with the main question, we explore the class of alpha-wqo for countable ordinals alpha and obtain several closure properties and a Hausdorff-style classification theorem. Our main contribution is the discovery of various properties of sigma-bqos and ruling out potential counterexamples to the ABK Conjecture.

Monogamy of highly symmetric states

Abstract:We investigate the extent to which two particles can be maximally entangled when they are also similarly entangled with other particles on a complete graph, focusing on Werner, isotropic, and Brauer states. To address this, we formulate and solve optimization problems that draw on concepts from many-body physics, computational complexity, and quantum cryptography. We approach the problem by formalizing it as a semi-definite program (SDP), which we solve analytically using tools from representation theory. Notably, we determine the exact maximum values for the projection onto the maximally entangled state and the antisymmetric Werner state, thereby resolving long-standing open problems in the field of quantum extendibility. Our results are achieved by leveraging SDP duality, the representation theory of symmetric, unitary and orthogonal groups, and the Brauer algebra.

Abstract:We prove that any Boolean algebra with the subsequential completeness property contains an independent family of size continuum. This improves a result of Argyros from the 80ties which asserted the existence of an uncountable independent family. In fact we prove it for a bigger class of Boolean algebras satisfying much weaker properties. It follows that the Stone spaces of all such Boolean algebras contains a copy of the Cech-Stone compactification of the integers and the Banach space of contnuous functions on them has $l_\infty$ as a quotient. Connections with the Grothendieck property in Banach spaces are discussed.

Abstract:Scaled Boolean algebras are a category of mathematical objects that arose from attempts to understand why the conventional rules of probability should hold when probabilities are construed, not as frequencies or proportions or the like, but rather as degrees of belief in uncertain propositions. This paper separates the study of these objects from that not entirely mathematical problem that motivated them. That motivating problem is explicated in the first section, and the application of scaled Boolean algebras to it is explained in the last section. The intermediate sections deal only with the mathematics. It is hoped that this isolation of the mathematics from the motivating problem makes the mathematics clearer.

Generically Computable Linear Orderings

Abstract:We study notions of generic and coarse computability in the context of computable structure theory. Our notions are stratified by the $\Sigma_\beta$ hierarchy. We focus on linear orderings. We show that at the $\Sigma_1$ level all linear orderings have both generically and coarsely computable copies. This behavior changes abruptly at higher levels; we show that at the $\Sigma_{\alpha+2}$ level for any $\alpha\in\omega_1^{ck}$ the set of linear orderings with generically or coarsely computable copies is $\mathbf{\Sigma}_1^1$-complete and therefore maximally complicated. This development is new even in the general analysis of generic and coarse computability of countable structures. In the process of proving these results we introduce new tools for understanding generically and coarsely computable structures. We are able to give a purely structural statement that is equivalent to having a generically computable copy and show that every relational structure with only finitely many relations has coarsely and generically computable copies at the lowest level of the hierarchy.
