Abstract:We show that the Depth^+ of an ultraproduct of Boolean Algebras, can not jump over the Depth^+ of every component by more than one cardinality. We can have, consequently, similar results for the Depth invariant.

Abstract:We address several questions of Donald Monk related to irredundance and spread of Boolean algebras, gaining both some ZFC knowledge and consistency results. We show in ZFC that irr(B_0 times B_1)= max(irr(B_0),irr(B_1)). We prove consistency of the statement ``there is a Boolean algebra B such that irr(B)<s(B otimes B)'' and we force a superatomic Boolean algebra B_* such that s(B_*)=inc(B_*)=kappa, irr(B_*)=Id(B_*)=kappa^+ and Sub(B_*)=2^(kappa^+). Next we force a superatomic algebra B_0 such that irr(B_0)<inc(B_0) and a superatomic algebra B_1 such that t(B_1)>Aut(B_1). Finally we show that consistently there is a Boolean algebra B of size lambda such that there is no free sequence in B of length lambda, there is an ultrafilter of tightness lambda (so t(B)=lambda) and lambda notin Depth_(Hs)(B).

Bridging Computational Notions of Depth

Abstract:In this article, we study the relationship between notions of depth for sequences, namely, Bennett's notions of strong and weak depth, and deep $\Pi^0_1$ classes, introduced by the authors and motivated by previous work of Levin. For the first main result of the study, we show that every member of a $\Pi^0_1$ class is order-deep, a property that implies strong depth. From this result, we obtain new examples of strongly deep sequences based on properties studied in computability theory and algorithmic randomness. We further show that not every strongly deep sequence is a member of a deep $\Pi^0_1$ class. For the second main result, we show that the collection of strongly deep sequences is negligible, which is equivalent to the statement that the probability of computing a strongly deep sequence with some random oracle is 0, a property also shared by every deep $\Pi^0_1$ class. Finally, we show that variants of strong depth, given in terms of a priori complexity and monotone complexity, are equivalent to weak depth.

Abstract:We investigate sigma-entangled linear orders and narrowness of Boolean algebras. We show existence of sigma-entangled linear orders in many cardinals, and we build Boolean algebras with neither large chains nor large pies. We study the behavior of these notions in ultraproducts.

Abstract:Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) occurs when short bunches travel on strongly bent trajectories. Its effects on high-quality beams can be severe and are well understood qualitatively. For quantitative results, however, one has to rely on numerical methods. There exist several simulation codes utilizing different approaches. We describe in some detail the code TraFiC4 developed at DESY for design and analysis purposes, which approaches the problem from first principles and solves the equations of motion either perturbatively or self-consistently. We present some calculational results and comparison with experimental data. Also, we give examples of how the code can be used to design beamlines with minimal emittance growth due to CSR.

Abstract:We consider the category of depth $0$ representations of a $p$-adic quasi-split reductive group with coefficients in $\overline{\mathbb{Z}}[\frac{1}{p}]$. We prove that the blocks of this category are in natural bijection with the connected components of the space of tamely ramified Langlands parameters for $G$ over $\overline{\mathbb{Z}}[\frac{1}{p}]$. As a particular case, this depth $0$ category is thus indecomposable when the group is tamely ramified. Along the way we prove a similar result for finite reductive groups. As an application, we deduce that the semi-simple local Langlands correspondence $\pi\mapsto \varphi_{\pi}$ constructed by Fargues and Scholze takes depth $0$ representations to tamely ramified parameters, using a motivic version of their construction recently announced by Scholze. We also bound the restriction of $\varphi_{\pi}$ to tame inertia in terms of the Deligne-Lusztig parameter of $\pi$ and show, in particular, that $\varphi_{\pi}$ is unramified if $\pi$ is unipotent.

Abstract:Logical depth and sophistication are two quantitative measures of the non-trivial organization of an object. Although apparently different, these measures have been proven equivalent, when the logical depth is renormalized by the busy beaver function. In this article, the measures are relativized to auxiliary information and re-compared to one another. The ability of auxiliary information to solve the halting problem introduces a distortion between the measures. Finally, similar to algorithmic complexity, sophistication and logical depth (renormalized) each offer a relation between their expression of $(x, y)$, $(x)$ and $(y | x)$.

Abstract:We investigate the combinatorial structure of the set of maximal antichains in a Boolean algebra ordered by almost refinement. We also consider the reaping relation and its associated cardinal invariants, focusing in particular on reduced powers of Boolean algebras. As an application, we obtain that, on the one hand, the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is greater than or equal to the cofinality of the meagre ideal and, on the other hand, a suitable parametrized diamond principle implies that the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is equal to $\aleph_1$.

Abstract:We show how to freely add the first layer of quantifier alternation depth to a Boolean doctrine over a small base category. This amounts to a doctrinal version of Herbrand's theorem for formulas with quantifier alternation depth at most one modulo a universal theory. To achieve this, we characterize, within the doctrinal setting, the classes $A$ of quantifier-free formulas for which there is a model $M$ such that $A$ is precisely the class of formulas whose universal closure is valid in $M$.

Abstract:Stabbing Planes (also known as Branch and Cut) is a proof system introduced very recently which, informally speaking, extends the DPLL method by branching on integer linear inequalities instead of single variables. The techniques known so far to prove size and depth lower bounds for Stabbing Planes are generalizations of those used for the Cutting Planes proof system. For size lower bounds these are established by monotone circuit arguments, while for depth these are found via communication complexity and protection. As such these bounds apply for lifted versions of combinatorial statements. Rank lower bounds for Cutting Planes are also obtained by geometric arguments called protection lemmas. In this work we introduce two new geometric approaches to prove size/depth lower bounds in Stabbing Planes working for any formula: (1) the antichain method, relying on Sperner's Theorem and (2) the covering method which uses results on essential coverings of the boolean cube by linear polynomials, which in turn relies on Alon's combinatorial Nullenstellensatz. We demonstrate their use on classes of combinatorial principles such as the Pigeonhole principle, the Tseitin contradictions and the Linear Ordering Principle. By the first method we prove almost linear size lower bounds and optimal logarithmic depth lower bounds for the Pigeonhole principle and analogous lower bounds for the Tseitin contradictions over the complete graph and for the Linear Ordering Principle. By the covering method we obtain a superlinear size lower bound and a logarithmic depth lower bound for Stabbing Planes proof of Tseitin contradictions over a grid graph.

Abstract:In answer to a question on Mathoverflow we show that the Boolean algebra $\mathcal{P}(\omega)/\mathit{fin}$ contains a family $\{\mathcal{B}_X:X\subseteq\mathfrak{c}\}$ of subalgebras with the property that $X\subseteq Y$ implies $\mathcal{B}_Y$ is a subalgebra of $\mathcal{B}_X$ and if $X\not\subseteq Y$ then $\mathcal{B}_Y$ is not embeddable into~$\mathcal{B}_X$. The proof proceeds by Stone duality and the construction of a suitable family of separable zero-dimensional compact spaces.

Abstract:We introduce a general framework for defining the depth of an infinite binary sequence with respect to a class of observers. We show that our general framework captures all depth notions introduced in computability/complexity theory so far. We review most such notions, show how they are particular cases of our general depth framework, and review some classical results about the different depth notions. We use our framework to define new notions of polynomial depth (called monotone poly depth), based on a polynomial version of monotone Kolmogorov complexity. We show that monotone poly depth satisfies all desirable properties of depth notions. We give two natural examples of deep sets, by showing that both the set of Levin random strings and the set of Kolmogorov random strings are monotone poly deep.

Top-Down Lower Bounds for Depth-Four Circuits

Abstract:We present a top-down lower-bound method for depth-$4$ boolean circuits. In particular, we give a new proof of the well-known result that the parity function requires depth-$4$ circuits of size exponential in $n^{1/3}$. Our proof is an application of robust sunflowers and block unpredictability.

Abstract:We prove that any Boolean algebra with the subsequential completeness property contains an independent family of size continuum. This improves a result of Argyros from the 80ties which asserted the existence of an uncountable independent family. In fact we prove it for a bigger class of Boolean algebras satisfying much weaker properties. It follows that the Stone spaces of all such Boolean algebras contains a copy of the Cech-Stone compactification of the integers and the Banach space of contnuous functions on them has $l_\infty$ as a quotient. Connections with the Grothendieck property in Banach spaces are discussed.

Abstract:Edge ideals of finite simple graphs are well-studied over polynomial rings. In this paper, we initiate the study of edge ideals over exterior algebras, specifically focusing on the depth and singular varieties of such ideals. We prove an upper bound on the depth of the edge ideal associated to a general graph and a more refined bound for bipartite graphs, and we show that both are tight. We also compute the depth of several large families of graphs including cycles, complete multipartite graphs, spider graphs, and Ferrers graphs. Finally, we focus on the effect whiskering a graph has on the depth of the associated edge ideal.

Abstract:Our main result is that any topological algebra based on a Boolean space is the extended Stone dual space of a certain associated Boolean algebra with additional operations. A particular case of this result is that the profinite completion of any abstract algebra is the extended Stone dual space of the Boolean algebra of recognizable subsets of the abstract algebra endowed with certain residuation operations. These results identify a connection between topological algebra as applied in algebra and Stone duality as applied in logic, and show that the notion of recognition originating in computer science is intrinsic to profinite completion in mathematics in general. This connection underlies a number of recent results in automata theory including a generalization of Eilenberg-Reiterman theory for regular languages and a new notion of compact recognition applying beyond the setting of regular languages. The purpose of this paper is to give the underlying duality theoretic result in its general form. Further we illustrate the power of the result by providing a few applications in topological algebra and language theory. In particular, we give a simple proof of the fact that any topological algebra quotient of a profinite algebra which is again based on a Boolean space is in fact a profinite algebra and we derive the conditions dual to the ones of the original Eilenberg theorem in a fully modular manner. We cast our results in the setting of extended Priestley duality for distributive lattices with additional operations as some classes of languages of interest in automata fail to be closed under complementation.

Abstract:PBZ*-lattices are algebraic structures related to quantum logics, which consist of bounded lattices endowed with two kinds of complements, named {\em Kleene} and {\em Brouwer}, such that the Kleene complement satisfies a weakening of the orthomodularity condition and the De Morgan laws, while the Brouwer complement only needs to satisfy the De Morgan laws for the pairs of elements with their Kleene complements. PBZ*-lattices form a variety $\mathbb{PBZL}^{\ast }$, which includes the variety $\mathbb{OML}$ of orthomodular lattices (considered with an extended signature, by letting their two complements coincide) and the variety $V(\mathbb{AOL})$ generated by the class $\mathbb{AOL}$ of antiortholattices. We investigate the congruences of antiortholattices, in particular of those obtained through certain ordinal sums and of those whose Brower complements satisfy the De Morgan laws, infer characterizations for their subdirect irreducibility and prove that even the lattice reducts of antiortholattices are directly irreducible. Since the two complements act the same on the lattice bounds in all PBZ*-lattices, we can define the horizontal sum of any nontrivial PBZ*-lattices, obtained by glueing them at their smallest and at their largest elements; a horizontal sum of two nontrivial PBZ*-lattices is a PBZ*-lattice exactly when at least one of its summands is an orthomodular lattice. We investigate the algebraic structures and the congruence lattices of these horizontal sums, then the varieties they generate. We obtain a relative axiomatization of the variety $V(\mathbb{OML}\boxplus \mathbb{AOL})$ generated by the horizontal sums of nontrivial orthomodular lattices with nontrivial antiortholattices w.r.t. $\mathbb{PBZL}^{\ast }$, as well as a relative axiomatization of the join of varieties $\mathbb{OML}\vee V(\mathbb{AOL})$ w.r.t. $V(\mathbb{OML}\boxplus \mathbb{AOL})$.
