Abstract:The new mesoporous silica with large pore size, SBA-15, was aluminated through the reaction with aluminum chloride. The present alumination method showed a good control of aluminum content but little influence on the pore structure. Abstract:Aluminum-incorporated SBA-15 materials with well-ordered structure, high surface area and narrow pore-size distribution were directly prepared by an evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method. Our synthesis method with two unique points of no mineral acid and hydrothermal treatment, is very simple, efficient and energy-saving by using the corresponding chloride precursors which can generate proper acidity in the synthesis solutions. The mesopores ordering degree of Al-SBA-15 materials decreased when the Al/Si atomic ratio was either larger than 0.08 or smaller than 0.05. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 sorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations show that the resultant materials have well ordered hexagonal mesostructures. The 27Al magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR characterizations show that most of the aluminum ions incorporate into the SBA-15 framework. The thermal analysis was used to probe the interaction between the silica species and copolymer templates.

Abstract:On the basis of scale-up synthesis of SBA-15 silica in 100 L and 2 m(3) reactors, some improved methods were used to prepare SBA-15 silica by crystallizing under high ratio of SiO2/H2O, recycling mother liquid, and using the industrial raw material of TEOS as Si source. It is necessary to openly heat the mother liquid over 95 degrees C for 2 h to evaporate ethanol and distill the industrial material of TEOS to remove the fractions less than 163 degrees C before they are used. By these ways, almost no wastes of acid and water are discharged; 50% of P123 and 90% of HCl are saved, respectively, and the cost of SBA-15 greatly drops to 40% of the original. Furthermore, the preparation efficiency increases as twice as before. Therefore, they have great advantages in industrial production of SBA-15 silica for the purposes of environmental protection and cost control.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (SBA-family) with 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) and 3-D cubic (Im3m) symmetry have been efficiently synthesized by using the mixture of triblock copolymer surfactant and sodium dodecylsulfonate as co-templates at relatively low concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are used to characterize these mesoporous silica materials, and the results show that the mesoporous silica mateials synthesized from the mixed surfactants have better mesostructural order and smaller mesopore size, compared with mesoporous silica materials of SBA-15 and SBA-16. Moreover, the microporosity in these ordered mesoporous materials is well controlled by the weight ratios of polymer surfactant to anionic surfactant. Particularly, when P123 concentration in the starting gel is reduced to less than 0.4wt.%, the walls of ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica are micropore-free.

Abstract:A highly ordered mesoporous carbon monolith has been successfully synthesized from the template of SBA-15 powder. Interestingly, not only the size and shape of the mesoporous carbon monolith could be simply tailored by controlling the size and shape of a vessel, but also macrocracks on the carbon monolith could be avoided. X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical stability test, and conductivity test were used to characterize the mesoporous carbon monolith, which exhibits the improved long-range mesostructured order, higher mechanically stable mesostructure, and superior conductivity, compared with mesoporous carbon monolith synthesized from SBA-15 monolith.

Abstract:Abstract The high surface area of mesoporous silica SBA-15 has been synthesized successfully by hydrothermal treatment with direct addition of PVA, triblock copolymer (P123) as a direct structure agent and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor. The mesoporous silica SBA-15 have been characterized with nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Measurement of nitrogen sorption indicated that with the addition of PVA, the surface area is increased but the pore volume and pore diameter is not significantly. The short time of hydrothermal treatment (20 h) and using x-ray diffraction, showed that the morphological structure of silica SBA-15 can be changed to a orthorhombic crystal system. The result of the FTIR and SEM-EDX characteristic indicated the functional groups and morphology of the SBA-15 with a narrow pore size distribution. The BET method has exhibited the largest surface area 1726 m 2 /g, pore volume 1.4 cm 3 /g, and pore diameter 3.2 nm. It can be suggested that the silica mesoporous SBA-15 will have potential application prospect in catalysis, storage, and adsorbent.

Abstract:Highly ordered SBA-15 sieves have been successfully synthesized in a low concentration liquid inorganic acid medium via the addition of small amounts of phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo). The solid product was characterized by N-2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, TEM and hydrothermal stability test. These results indicated that small amounts of HPMo in the synthesis media could reduce the amount of liquid inorganic acid and crystallization time greatly. And SBA-15 sieves prepared in this method exhibited an excellent hydrothermal stability, as its hexagonally ordered mesostructure was maintained after treated in 100 degrees C water over 72 h.

Abstract:Small pore (∼2.6 nm) thick-walled (7.7 nm) cage-like cubic mesoporous silica materials SBA-16 (ST-SBA-16) have been synthesized by using oligomeric surfactant Brij700 (polyoxyethylene (100) stearyl ether, C18H37EO100) with ultra-long hydrophilic chains. Their ordered mesostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen sorption analysis. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) results show that ST-SBA-16 products have large numbers of silanol groups. The mesoscopic ordering of ST-SBA-16 can be greatly improved by the addition of suitable amount of co-surfactants, such as 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB). The effects of the synthesis parameters on the structure properties of ST-SBA-16 have also been systematically investigated. It is shown that the total pore volume can be enlarged from 0.31 to 0.51 cm3g−1 by the addition of TMB, pore diameter can be augmented from 2.6 to 4.0 nm by increasing the synthesis temperature from 5 to 40 °C and the surface area can be effectively tailored by changing the hydrothermal treatment time and the calcination temperature.

Abstract:Using poly (ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer (P123) as template and tetraethyl orthosilicate as silica source, well-ordered cross-linked bimodal mesoporous SBA-15 was easily prepared via an one-pot synthetic strategy, where a pre-self-assembly of P123 with TEOS in strong acidic media was introduced followed by pH-adjusting. The pH-adjusting can effectively change the copolymer micelle size, which directly lead to the formation of the bimodal mesoporous structure at pH range of 6-7.5, with most typical value at pH = 7.5. Meanwhile, these bimodal mesopores are interconnected, which generates a 3D intra-particle porosity with many pore-openings on the surfaces of particles. After modified with tetraethylenepentamine, the as-synthesized bimodal mesoporous SBA-15 exhibited the CO2 adsorption capacities much higher than as-synthesized conventional SBA-15. These bimodal mesoporous SBA-15 materials have great potential application in CO2 capture.

Abstract:Abstract Mesoporous thiol-functionalized SBA-15 has been directly synthesized by co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) with triblock copolymer P123 as-structure-directing agent under hydrothermal conditions. Surfactant removal was performed by Soxhlet ethanol extraction. These materials have been characterized by powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption (BET model), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The main parameters, such as the initial molar ratio of MPTMS to TEOS, the time of adding MPTMS to synthesized gel and the Soxhlet ethanol extraction on the thiol functionalized SBA-15 with high thiol content and highly ordered hexagonal mesostructure, were investigated and evaluated. The adsorption capacity of the thiol-functionalized and non-functionalized SBA-15 materials for Pb 2+ ion from aqueous solution was tested. It was found that the Pb 2+ adsorption capacity of the thiol functionalized SBA-15 is three times higher than that of non-functionalized SBA-15.

Abstract:Silica-based mesoporous materials such as SBA-15 display an important support in catalysis field due to their ordered pore channels. The traditional synthesis route of SBA-15 suffers from high autogenous pressure and explosion risks, limiting their industrial production. Herein, a reflux system under ambient pressure is used for the synthesis of SBA-15. Ni nanoparticles were incorporated into the obtained materials to evaluate the quality of the SBA-15 support. The comparative performance of Ni/SBA-15H and Ni/SBA-15R validates the negligible difference between the SBA-15 prepared by the hydrothermal method (SBA-15H) and the reflux method (SBA-15R). This revolutionary synthesis methodology provides a novel and secure route for large-scale preparation of SBA-15.

Abstract:Well-ordered mesoporous SBA-15 sieves have been rapidly synthesized with the aid of heteropoly acids (abbreviated to HPAs). The promotable role of HPAs on SBA-15 formation has been confirmed by controlling the same synthesis conditions and the hydrothermal stability of corresponding reaction product was found to improve remarkably. The interaction between the EO moieties of template and tungstic or molybdic species (such as octahedral molybdic species), originated from the HPAs dissociation in the syntheses media, was expected to play a crucial role in promoting rapid nucleation and enhancing the tendency for mesoscopic ordering to occur. The synthesis route might be applicable to other nonionic surfactants, liquid acids and silica sources, which should provide promising method for synthesis of a large number of ordered mesoporous sieves with variety structure.

Abstract:Mesoporous aluminosilicates are promising solid acid catalysts. They are also excellent supports for transition metal catalysts for various catalytic applications. Synthesis of mesoporous aluminosilicates with controllable particle size, morphology, and structure, as well as adjustable acidity and high hydrothermal stability, is very desirable. In this work, we demonstrate the scalable synthesis of Al-SBA-15 microspheres with controllable physicochemical properties by using the microfluidic jet-spray-drying technology. The productivity is up to similar to 30 g of dried particles per nozzle per hour. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres possess uniform controllable micron sizes (27.5-70.2 mu m), variable surface morphologies, excellent hydrothermal stability (in pure steam at 800 degrees C), high surface areas (385-464 m(2)/g), ordered mesopore sizes (5.4-5.8 nm), and desirable acid properties. The dependence of various properties, including particle size, morphology, porosity, pore size, acidity, and hydrothermal stability, of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres on experimental parameters including precursor composition (Si/Al ratio and solid content) and processing conditions (drying and calcination temperatures) is established. A unique morphology transition from smooth to wrinkled microsphere triggered by control of the Si/Al ratio and solid content is observed. The particle formation and morphology-evolution mechanism are discussed. The Al-SBA-15 microspheres exhibit high acid catalytic performance for aldol-condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and ethyl alcohol with a high benzaldehyde conversion (similar to 56.3%), a fast pseudo-first-order reaction rate (similar to 0.1344 h(-1)), and a high cyclic stability, superior to the commercial zeolite acid (H-ZSM-5). Several influencing factors on the catalytic performance of the obtained Al-SBA-15 microspheres are also studied.

Abstract:In this study, typical mesoporous hexagonal rod-typed SBA-15 was successfully transformed into spherical shape with additional dendrimers, namely Dendritic Fibrous SBA-15 (DFSBA-15) by employing microwave-assisted microemulsion system. Physiochemical properties of DFSBA-15 were greatly influenced by aging temperature, urea/TEOS ratio, co-surfactant types, and aging time. It was found that the co-surfactant types were insignificant in controlling the pore size, while the aging conditions (temperature and time) were significant in controlling the fiber density. The analysis results (XRD, N2 physisorption, FTIR, and TEM) confirmed the optimal conditions for DFSBA-15 synthesis were at aging temperature of 100 °C, urea/TEOS ratio of 0.5, n-butanol as co-surfactant, and aging time of 12 h. The as-synthesized optimized DFSBA-15 was compared with the conventional SBA-15 via XRD, N2 physisorption, FTIR, CO2-TPD, NH3-TPD, TGA, TEM, and FESEM-EDX. As compared, DFSBA-15 rendered vast accessibility to the adsorption sites, higher basicity (≈86% enhancement) and acidity (≈66% enhancement), abundant siliceous framework and higher thermal stability (≈19% enhancement), owing to its radially oriented pores which elongated to the outer surface from the nucleus of its sphere. The outcome of this study anticipated the wide applications of DFSBA-15 in catalysis and biomedical fields by revealing the facile protocols of optimal DFSBA-15 synthesis.

Abstract:Silica samples condensed at acidic, neutral and alkaline media in the presence of various inorganic anions have been carefully investigated by 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. The results show that SO42- and CO32- could effectively improve the degree of silica condensation under neutral and alkaline media. Accordingly, for example, it is designable to synthesize hydrothermally stable and well ordered hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15 with very high degree of silica condensation in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species under neutral condition. As we expected, hexagonal mesoporous silica materials in the presence of sulfate (SBA-15-S) and carbonate species (SBA-15-U) show high degree of silica condensation, giving Q4/Q3 ratios at 6.3 and 4.3, which are much higher than that of conventional SBA-15 (Q4/(Q3+Q2) ratio at 1.8) synthesized in the absence of sulfate and carbonate species. Very interestingly, hexagonal mesoporous SBA-15-S and SBA-15-U shows very high hydrothermal stability, compared with SBA-15. For example, after being treated in 100% steaming at 780°C for 3h, SBA-15-S still remains its mesostructure. In constrast, SBA-15 loses most of the mesostructure. Furthermore, heteroatoms-substituted mesoporous materials such as aluminosilicate (Al-SBA-15-U) could also be synthesized in the presence of urea under neutral condition, and Al-SBA-15-U exhibits extraordinary hydrothermal stability. The unique and novel route for syntheses of hydrothermally stable and well ordered mesoporous silica and aluminosilicate materials in the presence of sulfate and carbonate species would be very important for potential application of mesoporous silica (SBA-15) and aluminosilicate materials (Al-SBA-15) as industrially supports and acidic catalysts.

Abstract:In this paper, extremely hydrothermal stable mesoporous Al-SBA-15 with controllable Al content has been synthesized by using triblock copolymer (P123) as template under an assistance of NaF at 160°C. This kind of material was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 sorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 27Al MAS NMR, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and ammonia-temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). It was found that nearly all Al added into the initial reaction mixture can be introduced into the product and thus-synthesized Al-SBA-15 maintained the well-ordered mesostructure and high surface area, large pore size, thick pore wall and high pore volume even after being hydrothermally treated at 100°C for 300h or steamed at 600°C for 6h. This kind of Al-SBA-15 is an efficient catalyst for the protection of carbonyl compound reactions under mild conditions.
