Abstract:This work systematically analysed the electrochemical and corrosion behaviour of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy samples in Hank's solution. For the samples with 1.5% and 3% Ag content, the sintering temperature increased from 750 to 950°C, and the corresponding corrosion resistance increased by 100 times due to the increased alloying of Ag; meanwhile for the sample with 4.5% Ag content, the sintering temperature increased from 750 to 950°C, and the corresponding corrosion resistance decreased by six times due to the increased precipitation of Ag. These tests prove that the Ag alloying is beneficial to the enhancement of the corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy, but the Ag trace precipitation has the opposite effect. A series of electrochemical characterizations and density functional theory calculations explain the mechanism of the above phenomenon. Ag alloying can promote the formation of uniform, complete, dense, stable and thick passivation layer on the surface of Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy, which makes Ti-Ta-Ag ternary alloy uniformly corroded without pitting. In addition, Ag alloying can effectively reduce the contact resistance of the solid–liquid interface. However, the trace precipitation of Ag plays the opposite role to the above effect.

Abstract:Cu-Ag alloys have much higher strength than that predicted by the usual mixture rule and attract intense attention. Although many researches on their strengthening mechanism were carried out, quantitative analysis of the ultra-strong strengthening effect of Ag precipitates is still a challenge. In this study, Cu, Cu-2 wt.% Ag and Cu-6 wt.% Ag were selected to bring to light the mechanism in remarkable strengthening effect of Ag alloying by relating the mechanical properties and the microstructure of the tested materials. A preliminary quantitative approach is proposed to predict the strength of Cu-Ag alloys with given composition and drawing strain.

Abstract:The precipitation reaction of L12–(Al, Ag)3Ti in a L10–TiAl(Ag) intermetallic compound with a nominal composition of Ti–54 at.% Al–2 at.% Ag has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron micrograph (HRTEM), EDX and supporting microhardness test. TEM observations revealed that the alloy quenched from 1273K is of L10 structure without any precipitates. After aging at 1073K for 1h, spherical L12–(Al, Ag)3Ti particles were formed via homogenous nucleation. The compositions of the precipitates and the matrix have been determined. After further aging at 1073K up to 65h, growth and coarsening of L12–(Al, Ag)3Ti precipitates and a change in the shape of the precipitates from spherical to elliptical were observed. The particle size distribution, number density and aspect ratio as functions of aging time have been determined. Microhardness tests showed that maximum hardness appeared in the sample aged at 1073K for 17h with an average precipitate diameter of about 40nm. The results were discussed in terms of an anisotropy of the energy of interphase boundaries and the theories of coarsening and precipitation hardening.

Abstract:Effect of Ag addition on the age hardening and precipitation behavior of an Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Zn-Mn-Zr alloy has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) with an energy dispersive X ray spectroscope (EDS), convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) and hardness. The results showed that the precipitation behavior of the Ag free Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Zn-Mn-Zr alloy was SSS → δ′/GP zone/δ′ + T1 → cubic σ phase + θ′ + T1 + S′/S phase, while in the Ag added Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Zn-Mn-Zr alloy, it was SSS → θ′ + δ′ + T1 → θ′ + δ′ + T1 + S′/S phase. The Ag added alloy exhibited higher strength than the Ag free alloy due to a promoted T1 precipitation, while the hardness loss of the Ag free alloy was smaller than that of the Ag added alloy due to the precipitation of cubic σ phase. Ag was mainly concentrated in T1 precipitates and stimulated the precipitation of T1 rather than providing nucleation sites for cubic σ phase. Hence, the precipitation of cubic σ phase was suppressed by competing with T1 for solutes in the Ag added Al-Cu-Li-Mg-Zn-Mn-Zr alloy.

Abstract:The effect of Ti addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Mg-Gd-Y-Zn alloys was investigated. Ti exhibited a refinement effect comparable to that of Zr in the as-cast condition. With the increase of Ti content, the phenomenon of grain refinement and homogenization was more obvious, especially for solution-treated alloys. The finest grains were obtained with 0.8wt% Ti and were composed of α-Mg and refined Mg5(Gd, Y, Zn) in the as-cast structure. Zr and Ti could be found along the grain boundaries. After solid solution treatment, Zr was still concentrated in the vicinity of the grain boundaries, while Ti was uniformly dispersed in the α-Mg matrix. The Ti-refined alloys exhibited superior grain size stability and mechanical properties. In addition, the mechanical properties of the considered alloys were improved due to the transition from Mg5(Gd, Y, Zn) to long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase during the heat treatment. Subsequent aging at 220℃ resulted in remarkable precipitation hardening and consequently the strength was significantly improved. The Ti-refined alloy exhibited higher ultimate tensile strength and elongation than the alloy containing the same amount of Zr, with an increase of 20MPa and 29%, respectively.
Precipitation Behaviors and Properties of Solution-Aging Al-Zn-Mg-Cu Alloy Refined with TiN Nanoparticles

Abstract:The precipitation hardening characteristics, aging precipitation behaviors, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy refined with TiN nanoparticles (well supported by Ti microparticles) are investigated, in detail. The results show that, compared with the alloy with only Ti or without any refiner, the TiN nanoparticle addition improves the solution of the alloying elements, retains the fine grains of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy during the solid solution process and enhances the Vickers hardness of the solution treated alloy. More importantly, during the aging process, the TiN nanoparticle addition promotes the diffusely uniform precipitation of the G.P. zones, eta' phase and eta phase, and accelerates the evolution to the G.P. zones from the supersaturated solid solution in the matrix, but inhibits the precipitations of eta' phase and eta phase. The yield stress (569.8 MPa), ultimate tensile stress (595.5 MPa) and elongation (18.1%) of the alloy refined with TiN are higher than those with only Ti or without any refiner. In addition, the electrical conductivities of the aged alloy with TiN are lower than those of the alloy with only Ti or without any refiner. (c) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Interface Structure Between Ag Precipitates and Cu Matrix and Its Effect on the Properties of the Cu-Ag Alloy

Abstract:The Cu-6%Ag and Cu-24%Ag were cast and annealed or aging treated to precipitate Ag secondary particles from supersaturated Cu matrix.The interface and orientation relationship between Ag precipitates and Cu matrix were investigated.The effect of Ag precipitates on the mechanical and electrical properties of the alloys was discussed.There are a strict orientation relationship,(100)_ Cu∥(100)_ Ag and 〈110〉_ Cu∥〈110〉_ Ag,and semi-coherence interface between Ag precipitates and Cu matrix.One dislocation exists in average nine(111)_ Cu lattice intervals to adjust the lattice misfit at the interface.The strict orientation relationship and semi-coherence interface may produce significant strengthening affect and hardly increase the electron scattering in the alloys.With prolonging aging time the amount of Ag precipitates and the hardness of the alloys increase but the electrical resistivity decreases.The changes of the amount,morphology and interface structure of the precipitates should be responsible for the change of the properties during aging treatment.

Abstract:The Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy is a new developed high strength die cast alloy which can be used for structural parts in the automotive and aerospace industry. In this study, the effect of various amount of Ti on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy under as-cast and T6 heat treatment conditions are investigated. The addition of Ti results in the formation of Al3Ti intermetallic phase, and the volume fraction and forming temperature increases with the increase of titanium content. With 0.1wt% Ti addition, the best mechanical properties of the alloy. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation reach up to 350 MPa, 440 MPa and 3.29% respectively after heat treatment. Titanium content should be controlled below 0.10%.
TEM characterization of the precipitation reaction in Ti–48Al–10Nb alloy

Abstract:A detailed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study has been made of the morphology and the crystallographic characteristics of precipitation of the γ1-Ti4Nb3Al9 in the γ-TiAl matrix in Ti–Al–Nb system. It is revealed that the γ1-Ti4Nb3Al9 precipitates, which are formed by a normal quench at 1473K and ageing treatment at 1073K, take needle-like morphology with a growing axis parallel to [001] direction of the matrix. The needle-like precipitates act as barrier grid to inhibit dislocation moving on the slipping plane {111} of the γ-TiAl matrix, which helps to improve the strength of the alloy. Selected electron microscopy analysis shows that the orientation relationship between the γ1 phase and the γ-TiAl matrix is [001]γ1//[001]γ, (100)γ1//(110)γ and (010)γ1//(1¯10)γ. The needle-like morphology of the precipitated phase is discussed with the coherency stress across the precipitate/matrix interface that is considered to be the main factor controlling the precipitate morphology.

Abstract:The effect of Ag on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological properties of Al-33Zn-2Cu alloys was investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties of the high-zinc aluminum alloy increase linearly with increasing silver content. The yield strength, tensile strength and elongation of the Al-33Zn-2Cu-0.6Ag alloy are 370 MPa, 433 MPa and 8.2% respectively. Wear resistance was also significantly improved. As the silver content in the Al-33Zn-2Cu alloy increases, the density of the η' phase in the α matrix increases. The addition of Ag aggravates the discontinuous precipitation of the α + η phase, resulting in the inhibition of the continuous large α + η phase in the alloy and the transformation into small discontinuous precipitation phases. Besides, as the Ag content increases, the lamellar α + η phases formed at the grain boundaries become finer and denser. This study may provide innovative ideas for alloy design of high-zinc aluminum alloys.

Abstract:In this study, the effect of accelerated Fe-rich precipitation caused by Ag addition on the refinement of solidified microstructure and the improvement of electrical, mechanical, and magnetic properties of Cu–10Fe alloys was systematically investigated. Firstly, the quadruple refinement of Cu grains, micron-sized primary Fe-rich spheres and dendrites, and nano-sized Fe-rich precipitates in as-cast Cu–10Fe alloys was induced by the accelerated Fe-rich precipitation. Secondly, the saturation magnetization of as-cast Cu–10Fe alloys was improved, which is mainly dominated by the accelerated precipitation of micron-sized Fe-rich spheres and dendrites, rather than that of nano-sized Fe-rich precipitates. Moreover, the yield strength of cold-rolled Cu–10Fe alloys was increased, which can be attributed to the accelerated precipitation of nano-sized Fe-rich phases and their pinning effect on dislocation movement during cold-rolling. In the end, the synergistic enhancement of strength, ductility, and electrical conductivity of aged Cu–10Fe alloys was obtained by Ag addition, which guides the preparation of high-performance Cu–Fe alloys.

Abstract:Ti-Ta binary shape memory alloys have attracted much interest due to the absence of toxic element and the low Young’s modulus. However, the effects of the third element on the microstructure and mechanical property had not been well understood. In the present study, the effect of Sn and Zr additions on the microstructure and mechanical property of Ti-35Ta (at.%) alloys has been investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the solution treated Ti-Ta-based alloys compose of equiaxial grains. The alloys consist of β-phase and α″ martensite phase at room temperature, except for the Ti-30Ta-5Sn alloy which consists of only β-phase. This is possibly due to the presence of Sn which provides a stronger β-stabilized effect on quenching compared to Zr addition. The lattice parameter of the β-phase increased with the increase in Sn and Zr content. The addition of Sn and Zr had caused obvious increase in the tensile strength. The corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-based alloys was also improved by adding Sn.
Enhancing the Ag Precipitation by Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment on Cu-Ag Alloys

Abstract:The influence of surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) on Ag precipitation in Cu-Ag alloys was investigated. Cu-6 wt% Ag was melt, cold rolled and solution treated to be Cu-Ag solid solution, which was either aged at 250 and 350 °C for 24 h directly or SMAT-ed before aging. Ag precipitates were hard be found in the directly aged Cu-Ag sample while they were observed clearly in the SMAT-ed counterpart at 250 °C. The Ag precipitates formed in the surface layer by SMAT are much coarser than those in the un-SMAT-ed sample. It is obvious that the precipitating behavior of Ag was promoted significantly by SMAT approach. A large number of defects were generated by SMAT and they were acting as fast atomic diffusion channels that facilitated the atomic diffusion of Ag.

Abstract:Mo is widely used as an effective microalloying element to improve mechanical performance of interphase precipitation steels, but the precise role of Mo in interphase precipitation behavior is not fully understood. In this contribution, interphase precipitation behavior in a series of Ti-Mo-bearing low carbon steels is systematically studied, and the role of Mo in interphase precipitates and its coarsening behavior is revisited. It is found that (Ti, Mo)C precipitates instead of TiC are formed in the Mo-containing alloys, and the average site fraction of Mo in (Ti, Mo)C is almost independent of the bulk Mo content. Moreover, the number density of interphase precipitates can be substantially enhanced by a minor addition of Mo, albeit it does not further rise with increasing the bulk Mo content. This is because the Mo fraction in (Ti, Mo)C rather than the bulk Mo content governs the driving force for precipitation nucleation and the interfacial energy of the (Ti, Mo)C/α and (Ti, Mo)C/γ interfaces. In addition to the reduced interfacial energy, decrease of Ti trans-interface diffusivity has been identified as another key reason for the enhanced carbide coarsening resistance in Mo-containing alloys.

Abstract:The influence of minor solute additions of Mg, Ag and Zn and their combinations on the precipitation kinetics and strengthening of an Al-Cu-Li alloy has been systematically investigated. Combining differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) provides information on how alloy chemistry changes the precipitation sequence, the precipitation kinetics in non – isothermal and in isothermal conditions, and the related strengthening. When adding Mg, the precipitation kinetics are strongly accelerated, which is shown to be related to the dominant formation of T1 precipitates. When adding Ag and Zn together with Mg, further enhancement of precipitation kinetics is observed, without change of the precipitation sequence, probably due to a more efficient nucleation of T1. The intrinsic strengthening potential of the T1 phase is shown to be unchanged by the addition of Ag and Zn, and the higher strength reached in the alloys containing these additions is shown to be due to a higher precipitate volume fraction.

Abstract:In this study, the effect of trace addition of Ag on the microstructure, tensile strength, and fracture toughness of novel Al-Mg-Zn alloys was evaluated using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction analysis, tensile test, and Khan tear test. The age-hardening response was improved by Ag owing to the stimulation of matrix precipitation. The type of MPts was unchanged by Ag, and the density and size of MPts were improved and refined. But the ability of matrix precipitates (MPts) to obstruct dislocation motion was weakened by Ag, thus, the Al-Mg-Zn alloys strength was not improved by Ag as expected. The addition of 0.2 wt% Ag improved the fracture toughness, while the addition of 0.4 wt% and 0.6 wt% Ag decreased the fracture toughness of Al-Mg-Zn alloys. The fracture toughness results are based on many factors such as MPts, misorientation of grain boundaries, fraction of deformed grains, and stress-strain concentration. The mechanism of the effect of microstructure on properties was also elucidated.

Abstract:The kinetics of strain induced precipitation in Ti-microalloyed steel with three levels of Mn was investigated using a two-stage interrupted compression (TSIC) test. The precipitation-time–temperature diagrams (PTT) were obtained by analyzing the softening kinetics curves of deformed austenite. Experimental results showed that the upper part of the PTT diagram for strain induced precipitation were shifted to lower temperatures and longer times as Mn concentration in steel was increased, but the retard effect of Mn on TiC precipitation weakened with decreasing testing temperature. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that the rate of TiC precipitation was decreased by more Mn addition at higher testing temperatures, which is in a good agreement with TSIC result. In addition, these results were discussed in terms of the effect of Mn on the solubility product of TiC in austenite, and the controlling factors of precipitation kinetics at different temperatures.
Enhanced precipitation-hardening of Cu-Ag alloys through controlled chromium addition

Abstract:Incorporating Cr into Cu-Ag alloys offers potential for enhancing mechanical properties , yet the intricate influence of microstructural characteristics at varying Cr concentrations on performance remains unclear. In this study, Cu-3 %Ag-(0.1–4 %Cr) alloys were investigated, optimizing performance through sequential solution processing and aging. After aging at 450 °C/2h, Cu-3 %Ag binary alloys featured solely discontinuous Ag precipitates, while Cr-containing alloys exhibited prominent continuous Ag precipitation. Modest Cr content significantly increased alloy hardness, with a 37.4 % improvement in the 0.5 % Cr alloy. Concurrently, Cr introduction caused a modest decline in electrical conductivity. These findings illuminate the strengthening mechanisms in Cu-Ag-Cr alloys, emphasizing the substantial presence of continuous Ag precipitates and fine Cr precipitates during aging, collectively enhancing the alloy's microstructure.

Investigation of the mechanical properties of TiC particle-reinforced Al-Cu alloys: insights into interface precipitation mechanisms and strengthening effects

Abstract:The increase in the mechanical performance of Al-Cu alloys through TiC particle reinforcement represents a significant improvement in the field of aluminum alloy strengthening. However, the precipitation behavior at the aluminum matrix and TiC interface requires further exploration. In this study, the induced precipitation mechanisms at the TiC interface and the impact of interface precipitates on bonding were investigated through scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and first-principles calculations. The results indicate that θ'-Al 2 Cu exhibits heterogeneous nucleation on the TiC substrate, and the (100) Al/(110) θ'-Al 2 Cu /(100) TiC interface structure possesses the lowest formation energy. Consequently, the precipitation of θ'-Al 2 Cu at the Al/TiC interface demonstrates thermodynamic preference and energy stability. Tensile simulations reveal that the presence of interface precipitates effectively enhances the strength of the interface structure. Electronic structure analysis indicates a "barrel effect" in the stretched interface model, with fracture occurring in the weakest-bonded Al lattice near the phase interface. Additionally, θ'-Al 2 Cu, acting as an interface adhesive, enhances the chemical bond strength between Al and TiC interface atoms. This work provides novel insights into particle-induced interface precipitation behavior and interface fracture mechanisms.

Abstract:In this study, the microstructural evolution, particularly precipitation behavior, and mechanical properties of cast Al–Li–Cu–Cd–Mn–Zr–Ti alloy during heat treatment are systematically examined. It provides a detailed discussion of the underlying mechanisms involved. After aging at 160 °C for 24 h, the alloy exhibits an excellent combination of strength and elongation, surpassing other cast Al–3Li–2Cu–X alloys reported in the literature. The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of cast Al–Li–Cu–Cd–Mn–Zr–Ti alloy during heat treatment are investigated systematically. In these findings, it is shown that the as‐cast alloy exhibits fine and equiaxed grains. During the solid solution treatment, Al20Cu2Mn3 dispersoids effectively restrict grain growth, and reducing the solid solution time has a similar effect. Subsequently, the precipitation behavior and its effect on the mechanical properties during the aging process are revealed. Al3(Ti, Zr) particles are uniformly distributed throughout the matrix, acting as nucleation sites for δ′, θ′, and T1 precipitates. Overtime, δ′ precipitates gradually coarsen and decrease in number, and some δ′ precipitates attach to Al3(Ti, Zr) particles, forming core–shell Al3(Li, Ti, Zr) phases. At the same time, plate‐shaped θ′ and T1 precipitates emerge and coarsen. After aging at 160 °C for 24 h, the alloy exhibits an excellent combination of strength (yield strength =293.3 ± 4 MPa, ultimate tensile strength =468.0 ± 3 MPa) and ductility (elongation =9.6 ± 0.4%), surpassing those reported in other cast Al–3Li–2Cu–X alloys. Critically, the underlying mechanisms behind the microstructure and mechanical properties are discussed extensively, providing valuable insights for the advancement of cast Al–Li alloys.
