Abstract:In the paper we develop the method of higher energies. New upper bounds for the additive energies of convex sets, sets A with small |AA| and |A(A+1)| are obtained. We prove new structural results, including higher sumsets, and develop the notion of dual popular difference sets.

Abstract:Given a subset of real numbers $A$ with small product $AA$ we obtain a new upper bound for the additive energy of $A$. The proof uses a natural observation that level sets of convolutions of the characteristic function of $A$ have small product with $A$.

Abstract:We improve a previous sum--products estimates in R, namely, we obtain that max{|A+A|,|AA|} \gg |A|^{4/3+c}, where c any number less than 5/9813. New lower bounds for sums of sets with small the product set are found. Also we prove some pure energy sum--products results, improving a result of Balog and Wooley, in particular.

Abstract:We generalise and improve some recent bounds for additive energies of modular roots. Our arguments use a variety of techniques, including those from additive combinatorics, algebraic number theory and the geometry of numbers. We give applications of these results to new bounds on correlations between Salié sums and to a new equidistribution estimate for the set of modular roots of primes.

Abstract:Let $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ be a finite set. It is known that $NA$ has a particular size ($\vert NA\vert = P_A(N)$ for some $P_A(X) \in \mathbb{Q}[X]$) and structure (all of the lattice points in a cone other than certain exceptional sets), once $N$ is larger than some threshold. In this article we give the first effective upper bounds for this threshold for arbitrary $A$. Such explicit results were only previously known in the special cases when $d=1$, when the convex hull of $A$ is a simplex or when $\vert A\vert = d+2$, results which we improve.

Abstract:We prove the reversed Alexandrov–Fenchel inequality for mixed Monge–Ampère masses of plurisubharmonic functions, which generalizes a result of Demailly and Pham. As applications to convex geometry, this gives a complex analytic proof of the reversed Alexandrov–Fenchel inequality for mixed covolumes, which generalizes recent results in convex geometry of Kaveh–Khovanskii, Khovanskii–Timorin, Milman–Rotem and Schneider on reversed (or complemented) Brunn–Minkowski and Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities. Also for toric plurisubharmonic functions in the Cegrell class, we confirm Demailly's conjecture on the convergence of higher Lelong numbers under the canonical approximation.

Abstract:This paper explores the relationship between convexity and sum sets. In particular, we show that elementary number theoretical methods, principally the application of a squeezing principle, can be augmented with the Elekes-Szabó Theorem in order to give new information. Namely, if we let $A \subset \mathbb R$, we prove that there exist $a,a' \in A$ such that\[\left | \frac{(aA+1)^{(2)}(a'A+1)^{(2)}}{(aA+1)^{(2)}(a'A+1)} \right | \gtrsim |A|^{31/12}.\]We are also able to prove that\[\max \{|A+ A-A|, |A^2+A^2-A^2|, |A^3 + A^3 - A^3|\} \gtrsim |A|^{19/12}.\]Both of these bounds are improvements of recent results and takes advantage of computer algebra to tackle some of the computations.

Abstract:We prove optimal concentration of measure for lifted functions on high dimensional expanders (HDX). Let $X$ be a $k$-dimensional HDX. We show for any $i\leq k$ and $f:X(i)\to [0,1]$: \[\Pr_{s\in X(k)}\left[\left|\underset{t\subseteq s}{\mathbb{E}}[f(t)]-\mu\right|\geq\varepsilon\right]\leq exp\left(-\varepsilon^2\frac{k}{i}\right).\] Using this fact, we prove that high dimensional expanders are reverse hypercontractive, a powerful functional inequality from discrete analysis implying that for any sets $A,B \subset X(k)$, the probability a $\rho$-correlated pair passes between them is at least \[\Pr_{s,s' \sim T_\rho}[s \in A, s' \in B] \geq \Pr[A]^{O(1)} \Pr[B]^{O(1)}.\] Our results hold under weak spectral assumptions on $X$. Namely we prove exponential concentration of measure for any complex below the `Trickling-Down Threshold' (beyond which concentration may be arbitrarily poor), and optimal concentration for $\sqrt{k}$-skeletons of such complexes. We also show optimal bounds for the top dimension of stronger HDX among other settings. We leverage our inequalities to prove several new agreement testing theorems on high dimensional expanders, including a new 99%-regime test for subsets, and a variant of the `Z-test' achieving inverse exponential soundness under the stronger assumption of $\ell_\infty$-expansion. The latter gives rise to the first optimal testers beyond the complete complex and products, a stepping stone toward the use of HDX in strong soundness PCPs. We also give applications within expansion, analysis, combinatorics, and coding theory, including a proof that two-sided HDX have optimal geometric overlap (giving the first explicit bounded-degree construction), near-optimal double samplers, new super-exponential degree lower bounds for certain HDX, distance-amplified list-decodable and locally testable codes, a Frankl-Rödl Theorem and more.

On universal sets and sumsets

Abstract:We study the concept of universal sets from the additive--combinatorial point of view. Among other results we obtain some applications of this type of uniformity to sets avoiding solutions to linear equations, and get an optimal upper bound for the covering number of general sumsets.

Abstract:We establish a sharp estimate for $k$-additive energies of subsets of the discrete hypercube conjectured by de Dios Pont, Greenfeld, Ivanisvili, and Madrid in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.09352" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.09352">arXiv:2112.09352</a>, which generalizes a result by Kane and Tao. This note proves the only missing ingredient, which is an elementary inequality for real numbers, previously verified only for $k\leq100$. We also give an interpretation of this inequality in terms of a lazy non-symmetric simple random walk on the integer lattice.

On an entropic analogue of additive energy

Abstract:Recent advances have linked various statements involving sumsets and cardinalities with corresponding statements involving sums of random variables and entropies. In this vein, this paper shows that the quantity $2{\bf H}\{X, Y\} - {\bf H}\{X+Y\}$ is a natural entropic analogue of the additive energy $E(A,B)$ between two sets. We develop some basic theory surrounding this quantity, and demonstrate its role in the proof of Tao's entropy variant of the Balog--Szemerédi--Gowers theorem. We examine the regime where entropic additive energy is small, and discuss a family of random variables related to Sidon sets. In finite fields, one can define an entropic multiplicative energy as well, and we formulate sum-product-type conjectures relating these two entropic energies.

Abstract:Some new upper and lower bounds on determinants are presented for diagonally dominant matrices and general -matrices by using different methods. These bounds are some improvements of results given by Ostrowski (1952) and (1937), Price (1951), Wang and Zhang (2002), Huang and Liu (2005), and so forth. In addition, these bounds are also used to localize some numerical characters (e.g., the minimum eigenvalues, singular values and condition numbers) of certain matrices.

Abstract:We prove that for $d\geq 0$ and $k\geq 2$, for any subset $A$ of a discrete cube $\{0,1\}^d$, the $k-$higher energy of $A$ (the number of $2k-$tuples $(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_{2k})$ in $A^{2k}$ with $a_1-a_2=a_3-a_4=\dots=a_{2k-1}-a_{2k}$) is at most $|A|^{\log_{2}(2^k+2)}$, and $\log_{2}(2^k+2)$ is the best possible exponent. We also show that if $d\geq 0$ and $2\leq k\leq 10$, for any subset $A$ of a discrete cube $\{0,1\}^d$, the $k-$additive energy of $A$ (the number of $2k-$tuples $(a_1,a_2,\dots,a_{2k})$ in $A^{2k}$ with $a_1+a_2+\dots+a_k=a_{k+1}+a_{k+2}+\dots+a_{2k}$) is at most $|A|^{\log_2{ \binom{2k}{k}}}$, and $\log_2{ \binom{2k}{k}}$ is the best possible exponent. We discuss the analogous problems for the sets $\{0,1,\dots,n\}^d$ for $n\geq 2$.

On improvements of the Hardy, Copson and Rellich inequalities

Abstract:Using a method of factorization and by introducing a generalized discrete Dirichlet's Laplacian matrix $(-\Delta_{\Lambda})$, we establish an extended improved discrete Hardy's inequality and Rellich inequality in one dimension. We prove that the discrete Copson inequality (E.T. Copson, \emph{Notes on a series of positive terms}, J. London Math. Soc., 2 (1927), 9-12.) in one-dimension admits an improvement. We also prove that the improved Copson's weights are optimal (in fact \emph{critical}). It is shown that improvement of the Knopp inequalities (Knopp in J. London Math. Soc. 3(1928), 205-211 and 5(1930), 13-21) lies on improvement of the Rellich inequalities. Further, an improvement of the generalized Hardy's inequality (Hardy in Messanger of Math. 54(1925), 150-156) in a special case is obtained.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is two-fold. First, we establish new sharp quantitative estimates for Faber-Krahn inequalities on simply connected space forms. We prove that the gap between the first eigenvalue of a given set $\Omega$ and that of the ball quantitatively controls both the $L^1$ distance of this set from a ball {\it and} the $L^2$ distance between the corresponding eigenfunctions: \[ \lambda_1(\Omega) - \lambda_1(B) \gtrsim |\Omega \Delta B|^2 + \int |u_{\Omega} - u_B|^2, \] where $B$ denotes the nearest geodesic ball to $\Omega$ with $|B|=|\Omega|$ and $u_\Omega$ denotes the first eigenfunction with suitable normalization. On Euclidean space, this extends a result of Brasco-De Phillipis-Velichkov; the eigenfunction control largely builds upon new regularity results for minimizers of critically perturbed Alt-Cafarelli type functionals in our companion paper. On the round sphere and hyperbolic space, the present results are the first sharp quantitative results with respect to any distance; here the local portion of the analysis is based on new implicit spectral analysis techniques. Second, we apply these sharp quantitative Faber-Krahn inequalities in order to establish a quantitative form of the Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman (ACF) monotonicity formula. We show that the energy drop in the ACF monotonicity formula from one scale to the next controls how close a pair of admissible functions is from a pair of complementary half-plane solutions. In particular, when the square root of the energy drop summed over all scales is small, our result implies the existence of tangents (unique blowups) of these functions.

Abstract:Sumset estimates, which provide bounds on the cardinality of sumsets of finite sets in a group, form an essential part of the toolkit of additive combinatorics. In recent years, probabilistic or entropic analogs of many of these inequalities were introduced. We study analogues of these sumset estimates in the context of convex geometry and Lebesgue measure on ${\mathbb R}^n$. First, we observe that, with respect to Minkowski summation, volume is supermodular to arbitrary order on the space of convex bodies. Second, we explore sharp constants in the convex geometry analogues of variants of the Pl\"unnecke-Ruzsa inequalities. In the last section of the paper, we provide connections of these inequalities to the classical Rogers-Shephard inequality.

Abstract:The main aim of this article is to prove quantitative spectral inequalities for the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions. More specifically, we prove sharp quantitative stability for the Faber-Krahn inequality in terms of Newtonian capacities and Hausdorff contents of positive codimension, thus providing an answer to a question posed by De Philippis and Brasco. One of our results asserts that for any bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq3$, with Lebesgue measure equal to that of the unit ball $B_0$ and whose first eigenvalue is $\lambda_\Omega$, denoting by $\lambda_{B_0}$ the first eigenvalue for the unit ball, for any $a\in (0,1)$ it holds $$\lambda_\Omega - \lambda_{B_0} \geq C(a) \,\inf_B \bigg(\sup_{t\in (0,1)} \frac1{H^{n-1}(\partial ((1-t) B))} \int_{\partial ((1-t) B)} \frac{\operatorname{Cap}_{n-2}(B(x,atr_B)\setminus \Omega)}{(t\,r_B)^{n-3}}\,dH^{n-1}(x)\bigg)^2,$$ where the infimum is taken over all balls $B$ with the same Lebesgue measure as $\Omega$ and $\operatorname{Cap}_{n-2}$ is the Newtonian capacity of homogeneity $n-2$. In fact, this holds for bounded subdomains of the sphere and the hyperbolic space, as well. In a second result, we also apply the new Faber-Krahn type inequalities to quantify the Hayman-Friedland inequality about the characteristics of disjoint domains in the unit sphere. Thirdly, we propose a natural extension of Carleson's $\varepsilon^2$-conjecture to higher dimensions in terms of a square function involving the characteristics of certain spherical domains, and we prove the necessity of the finiteness of such square function in the tangent points via the Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman monotonicity formula. Finally, we answer in the negative a question posed by Allen, Kriventsov and Neumayer in connection to rectifiability and the positivity set of the ACF monotonicity formula.

Log-concavity in Combinatorics

Abstract:We survey some of the mechanisms used to prove that naturally defined sequences in combinatorics are log-concave. Among these mechanisms are Alexandrov's inequality for mixed discriminants, the Alexandrov Fenchel inequality for mixed volumes, Lorentzian polynomials, and the Hard Lefschetz theorem. We use these mechanisms to prove some new log-concavity and extremal results related to partially ordered sets and matroids. We present joint work with Ramon van Handel and Xinmeng Zeng to give a complete characterization for the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality. We extend Stanley's inequality for regular matroids to arbitrary matroids using the technology of Lorentzian polynomials. As a result, we provide a new proof of the weakest Mason conjecture. We also prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gorenstein ring associated to the basis generating polynomial of a matroid to satisfy Hodge-Riemann relations of degree one on the facets of the positive orthant.

Higher-dimensional Dedekind sums and their bounds arising from the discrete diagonal of the n-cube

Abstract:Higher-dimensional Dedekind sums are defined as a generalization of a recent 1-dimensional probability model of Dilcher and Girstmair to a d-dimensional cube. The analysis of the frequency distribution of marked lattice points leads to new formulae in certain special cases, and to new bounds for the classical Dedekind sums. Upper bounds for the generalized Dedekind sums are defined in terms of 1-dimensional moments. In the classical two-dimensional case, the ratio of these sums to their upper bounds are cosines of angles between certain vectors of n-dimensional cones, conjectured to have a largest spacial angle of pi/6.

A Conjectural Brouwer Inequality for Higher-Dimensional Laplacian Spectra

Abstract:We present a generalization of Brouwer's conjectural family of inequalities -- a popular family of inequalities in spectral graph theory bounding the partial sum of the Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs -- for the case of abstract simplicial complexes of any dimension. We prove that this family of inequalities holds for shifted simplicial complexes, which generalize threshold graphs, and give tighter bounds (linear in the dimension of the complexes) for simplicial trees. We prove that the conjecture holds for the the first, second, and last partial sums for all simplicial complexes, generalizing many known proofs for graphs to the case of simplicial complexes. We also show that the conjecture holds for the tth partial sum for all simplicial complexes with dimension at least t and matching number greater than $t$. Returning to the special case of graphs, we expand on a known proof to show that the Brouwer's conjecture holds with equality for the tth partial sum where t is the maximum clique size of the graph minus one (or, equivalently, the number of cone vertices). Along the way, we develop machinery that may give further insights into related long-standing conjectures.
