Abstract:We study the concept of universal sets from the additive--combinatorial point of view. Among other results we obtain some applications of this type of uniformity to sets avoiding solutions to linear equations, and get an optimal upper bound for the covering number of general sumsets.

Abstract:The entropic doubling $\sigma_{\operatorname{ent}}[X]$ of a random variable $X$ taking values in an abelian group $G$ is a variant of the notion of the doubling constant $\sigma[A]$ of a finite subset $A$ of $G$, but it enjoys somewhat better properties; for instance, it contracts upon applying a homomorphism. In this paper we develop further the theory of entropic doubling and give various applications, including: (1) A new proof of a result of Pálvölgyi and Zhelezov on the ``skew dimension'' of subsets of $\mathbf{Z}^D$ with small doubling; (2) A new proof, and an improvement, of a result of the second author on the dimension of subsets of $\mathbf{Z}^D$ with small doubling; (3) A proof that the Polynomial Freiman--Ruzsa conjecture over $\mathbf{F}_2$ implies the (weak) Polynomial Freiman--Ruzsa conjecture over $\mathbf{Z}$.

Abstract:A subset $S$ of the Boolean hypercube $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is a sumset if $S = A+A = \{a + b \ | \ a, b\in A\}$ for some $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^n$. We prove that the number of sumsets in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is asymptotically $(2^n-1)2^{2^{n-1}}$. Furthermore, we show that the family of sumsets in $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ is almost identical to the family of all subsets of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ that contain a complete linear subspace of co-dimension $1$.

On the number of sets with small sumset

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

Abstract:Motivated by questions asked by Erdos, we prove that any set $A\subset{\mathbb N}$ with positive upper density contains, for any $k\in{\mathbb N}$, a sumset $B_1+\cdots+B_k$, where $B_1,\dots,B_k\subset{\mathbb N}$ are infinite. Our proof uses ergodic theory and relies on structural results for measure preserving systems. Our techniques are new, even for the previously known case of $k=2$.

Abstract:Sumset estimates, which provide bounds on the cardinality of sumsets of finite sets in a group, form an essential part of the toolkit of additive combinatorics. In recent years, probabilistic or entropic analogs of many of these inequalities were introduced. We study analogues of these sumset estimates in the context of convex geometry and Lebesgue measure on ${\mathbb R}^n$. First, we observe that, with respect to Minkowski summation, volume is supermodular to arbitrary order on the space of convex bodies. Second, we explore sharp constants in the convex geometry analogues of variants of the Pl\"unnecke-Ruzsa inequalities. In the last section of the paper, we provide connections of these inequalities to the classical Rogers-Shephard inequality.

Abstract:Recent advances have linked various statements involving sumsets and cardinalities with corresponding statements involving sums of random variables and entropies. In this vein, this paper shows that the quantity $2{\bf H}\{X, Y\} - {\bf H}\{X+Y\}$ is a natural entropic analogue of the additive energy $E(A,B)$ between two sets. We develop some basic theory surrounding this quantity, and demonstrate its role in the proof of Tao's entropy variant of the Balog--Szemerédi--Gowers theorem. We examine the regime where entropic additive energy is small, and discuss a family of random variables related to Sidon sets. In finite fields, one can define an entropic multiplicative energy as well, and we formulate sum-product-type conjectures relating these two entropic energies.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A1,…,An(n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b1,…,bn be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m⩽(k−1)/(n−1) there are more than (k−1)n−(m+1)(n2) sets {a1,…,an} such that a1∈A1,…,an∈An, and both ai≠aj and mai+bi≠maj+bj (or both mai≠maj and ai+bi≠aj+bj) for all 1⩽i<j⩽n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.

Limiting Behavior in Missing Sums of Sumsets

Abstract:We study $|A + A|$ as a random variable, where $A \subseteq \{0, \dots, N\}$ is a random subset such that each $0 \le n \le N$ is included with probability $0 < p < 1$, and where $A + A$ is the set of sums $a + b$ for $a,b$ in $A$. Lazarev, Miller, and O'Bryant studied the distribution of $2N + 1 - |A + A|$, the number of summands not represented in $A + A$ when $p = 1/2$. A recent paper by Chu, King, Luntzlara, Martinez, Miller, Shao, Sun, and Xu generalizes this to all $p\in (0,1)$, calculating the first and second moments of the number of missing summands and establishing exponential upper and lower bounds on the probability of missing exactly $n$ summands, mostly working in the limit of large $N$. We provide exponential bounds on the probability of missing at least $n$ summands, find another expression for the second moment of the number of missing summands, extract its leading-order behavior in the limit of small $p$, and show that the variance grows asymptotically slower than the mean, proving that for small $p$, the number of missing summands is very likely to be near its expected value.

Locality in Sumsets

Abstract:Motivated by the Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa (PFR) Conjecture, we develop a theory of locality in sumsets, with applications to John-type approximation and sets with small doubling. First we show that if $A \subset \mathbb{Z}$ with $|A+A| \le (1-\epsilon) 2^d |A|$ is non-degenerate then $A$ is covered by $O(2^d)$ translates of a $d$-dimensional generalised arithmetic progression ($d$-GAP) $P$ with $|P| \le O_{d,\epsilon}(|A|)$; thus we obtain one of the polynomial bounds required by PFR, under the non-degeneracy assumption that $A$ is not efficiently covered by $O_{d,\epsilon}(1)$ translates of a $(d-1)$-GAP. We also prove a stability result showing for any $\epsilon,\alpha>0$ that if $A \subset \mathbb{Z}$ with $|A+A| \le (2-\epsilon)2^d|A|$ is non-degenerate then some $A' \subset A$ with $|A'|>(1-\alpha)|A|$ is efficiently covered by either a $(d+1)$-GAP or $O_{\alpha}(1)$ translates of a $d$-GAP. This `dimension-free' bound for approximate covering makes for a stark contrast with exact covering, where the required number of translates grows exponentially with $d$. We further show that if $A \subset \mathbb{Z}$ is non-degenerate with $|A+A| \le (2^d + \ell)|A|$ and $\ell \le 0.1 \cdot 2^d$ then $A$ is covered by $\ell+1$ translates of a $d$-GAP $P$ with $|P| \le O_d(|A|)$; this is tight, in that $\ell+1$ cannot be replaced by any smaller number. The above results also hold for $A \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, replacing GAPs by a suitable common generalisation of GAPs and convex bodies. In this setting the non-degeneracy condition holds automatically, so we obtain essentially optimal bounds with no additional assumption on $A$. These results are all deduced from a unifying theory, in which we introduce a new intrinsic structural approximation of any set, which we call the `additive hull', and develop its theory via a refinement of Freiman's theorem with additional separation properties.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers a monomial projective curve such that the Hilbert function of and the cardinalities of agree. The singularities of determines the asymptotic behaviour of | sA |, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of , and the asymptotic structure of sA . We show that some additive inverse problems can be translate to the rigidity of Hilbert polynomials and we improve an upper bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of monomial projective curves by using results of additive combinatorics.

Abstract:We show that for every positive integer $k$ there are positive constants $C$ and $c$ such that if $A$ is a subset of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ of size at least $C n^{1/k}$, then, for some $d \leq k-1$, the set of subset sums of $A$ contains a homogeneous $d$-dimensional generalized arithmetic progression of size at least $c|A|^{d+1}$. This strengthens a result of Szemerédi and Vu, who proved a similar statement without the homogeneity condition. As an application, we make progress on the Erdős--Straus non-averaging sets problem, showing that every subset $A$ of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ of size at least $n^{\sqrt{2} - 1 + o(1)}$ contains an element which is the average of two or more other elements of $A$. This gives the first polynomial improvement on a result of Erdős and Sárközy from 1990.

A note on the largest sum-free sets of integers

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

Measuring the convexity of compact sumsets with the Schneider non-convexity index

Abstract:In recent work, Franck Barthe and Mokshay Madiman introduced the concept of the Lyusternik region, denoted by $\Lambda_{n}(m)$, to better understand volumes of sumsets. They gave a characterization of $\Lambda_{n}(2)$ (the volumes of compact sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ when at most $m=2$ sets are added together) and proved that Lebesgue measure satisfies a fractional superadditive property. We attempt to imitate the idea of the Lyusternik region by defining a region based on the Schneider non-convexity index function, which was originally defined by Rolf Schneider in 1975. We call this region the Schneider region, denoted by $S_{n}(m)$. In this paper, we will give an initial characterization of the region $S_{1}(2)$ and in doing so, we will prove that the Schneider non-convexity index of a sumset $c(A_1+A_2)$ has a best lower bound in terms of $c(A_1)$ and $c(A_2)$. We will pose some open questions about extending this lower bound to higher dimensions and large sums. We will also show that, analogous to Lebesgue measure, the Schneider non-convexity index has a fractional subadditive property. Regarding the Lyusternik region, we will show that when the number of sets being added is $m\geq3$, that the region $\Lambda_{n}(m)$ is not closed, proving a new qualitative property for the region.

Concerning the two new kinds of restricted sumsets $$L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_1\in A_1,\ldots,a_n\in A_n,\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n\}$$ and $$C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_i\in A_i\ (1\le i\le n),\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n,\ \text{and}\ a_n\not=a_1\}$$ recently introduced by the second author, when $G$ is the additive group of a field we obtain lower bounds for $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ and $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ via the polynomial method. Moreover, when $G$ is torsion-free and $A_1=\cdots=A_n$, we determine completely when $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ or $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ attains its lower bound.
