Abstract:In recent joint papers the authors of this note solved a famous problem remained open for many years and proved that for arbitrary contractions with trace class difference there exists an integrable spectral shift function, for which an analogue of the Lifshits--Krein trace formula holds. Similar results were also obtained for pairs of dissipative operators. Note that in contrast with the case of self-adjoint and unitary operators it may happen that there is no {\it real-valued} integrable spectral shift function. In this note we announce results that give sufficient conditions for the existence of an integrable real-valued spectral shift function in the case of pairs of contractions. We also consider the case of pairs of dissipative operators.

Higher-Order Trace Formulas for Contractive and Dissipative Operators

Abstract:We establish higher order trace formulas for pairs of contractions along a multiplicative path generated by a self-adjoint operator in a Schatten-von Neumann ideal, removing earlier stringent restrictions on the kernel and defect operator of the contractions and enlarging the set of admissible functions. We also derive higher order trace formulas for maximal dissipative operators under relaxed assumptions and new simplified trace formulas for unitary and resolvent comparable self-adjoint operators. The respective spectral shift measures are absolutely continuous and, in the case of contractions, the set of admissible functions for the $n$th order trace formula on the unit circle includes the Besov class $B^n_{\infty, 1}(\T)$. Both aforementioned properties are new in the mentioned generality.

Abstract:Let $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and let $H_0,V$ be self-adjoint operators such that $V$ is bounded and $V(H_0-i)^{-p}\in\mathcal{S}^{n/p}$ for $p=1,\ldots,n$. We prove the existence, uniqueness up to polynomial summands, and regularity properties of all higher order spectral shift functions associated to the perturbation theory of $t\mapsto H_0+tV$ ($t\in[0,1]$). Such perturbations arise in situations in noncommutative geometry and mathematical physics with dimension $n-1$. Our proof is simpler than that of \cite{NuSkJST,NuSkJOT} and works at all orders regardless of $n$.

Abstract:As we know, B.Sz-Nagy and C. Foias studied systematically contractions on Hilbertspaces and developed the harmonic analysis theory of operators on Hilbert spaces. Since 1950s,people paid great attention to the study of contractions on π k spaces. Only a few results havebeen obtained until today; in particular, the spectral theory of contractions on π k Spaces andcorresponding harmonic analysis theory have left still unexplored. This paper, as a continuationof [1], [2], [6], in which the authors after discussing some problems such as the negative invariantsubspaces and unitary dilations of contractions on complete spaces with indefinite metrics, estab-lish the triangle model of contractions on π k spaces and furthermore, apply the triangle modelto the study of spectral theory of contractions on π k spaces, which is essential to the harmonicanalysis of operators on π k spaces.
Notes on a conjecture by Paszkiewicz on an ordered product of positive contractions

Abstract:Paszkiewicz's conjecture asserts that given a decreasing sequence $T_1\ge T_2\ge \dots$ of positive contractions on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $H$, the product $S_n=T_nT_{n-1}\cdots T_1$ converges in the strong operator topology. In these notes, we give an equivalent, more precise formulation of his conjecture. Moreover, we show that the conjecture is true for the following two cases: (1) $1$ is not in the essential spectrum of $T_n$ for some $n\in \mathbb{N}$. (2) The von Neumann algebra generated by $\{T_n\mid n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ admits a faithful normal tracial state. We also remark that the analogous conjecture for the weak convergence is true.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to provide sharp spectral gap estimates for problems involving higher-order operators (including both the clamped and buckling plate problems) on Cartan–Hadamard manifolds. The proofs are symmetrization-free — thus no sharp isoperimetric inequality is needed — based on two general, yet elementary functional inequalities. The spectral gap estimate for clamped plates solves a sharp asymptotic problem from [Q.-M. Cheng and H. Yang, Universal inequalities for eigenvalues of a clamped plate problem on a hyperbolic space, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 139(2) (2011) 461–471] concerning the behavior of higher-order eigenvalues on hyperbolic spaces, and answers a question raised in [A. Kristály, Fundamental tones of clamped plates in nonpositively curved spaces, Adv. Math. 367(39) (2020) 107113] on the validity of such sharp estimates in high-dimensional Cartan–Hadamard manifolds. As a byproduct of the general functional inequalities, various Rellich inequalities are established in the same geometric setting.

Abstract:We consider kernel operators defined by a dynamical system. The Hausdorff distance of spectra is estimated by the Hausdorff distance of subsystems. We prove that the spectrum map is $ \frac{1}{2} $-Hölder continuous provided the group action and kernel are Lipschitz continuous and the group has strict polynomial growth. Also, we prove that the continuity can be improved resulting in the spectrum map being Lipschitz continuous provided the kernel is instead locally-constant. This complements a 1990 result by J.~Avron; P.H.M.v.~Mouche; B.~Simon establishing that one-dimensional discrete quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators with Lipschitz continuous potentials, e.g., the Almost Mathieu Operator, exhibit spectral $ \frac{1}{2} $-Hölder continuity. Also, this complements a 2019 result by S.~Beckus; J.~Bellissard; H.~Cornean establishing that $ d $-dimensional discrete subshift Schrödinger operators with locally-constant potentials, e.g., the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, exhibit spectral Lipschitz continuity. Our work exposes the connection between the past two results, and the group, e.g., the Heisenberg group, needs not be the integer lattice nor abelian.

Extreme contractions on finite-dimensional Banach spaces

Abstract:We study extreme contractions in the setting of finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces. Motivated by the famous Krein-Milman Theorem, we prove that a \emph{rank one} norm one linear operator between such spaces can be expressed as a convex combination of \emph{rank one} extreme contractions, whenever the domain is two-dimensional. We establish that the same result holds true in the space of all linear operators from $\ell_{\infty}^n(\mathbb{C}) $ to $ \ell_1^n (\mathbb{C}). $ Furthermore, we present a geometric characterization of extreme contractions between finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces.

Abstract:In this note, we provide an elementary proof for the expression of $f(U)-f(V)$ in the form of a double operator integral for every Lipschitz function $f$ on the unit circle $\cir$ and for a pair of unitary operators $(U,V)$ with $U-V\in\mathcal{S}_{2}(\hilh)$ (the Hilbert-Schmidt class). As a consequence, we obtain the Schatten $2$-Lipschitz estimate $\|f(U)-f(V)\|_2\leq \|f\|_{\lip(\cir)}\|U-V\|_2$ for all Lipschitz functions $f:\cir\to\C$. Moreover, we develop an approach to the operator Lipschitz estimate for a pair of contractions with the assumption that one of them is a strict contraction, which significantly extends the class of functions from results known earlier. More specifically, for each $p\in(1,\infty)$ and for every pair of contractions $(T_0,T_1)$ with $\|T_0\|<1$, there exists a constant $d_{f, p,T_0}>0$ such that $\|f(T_1)-f(T_0)\|_p\leq d_{f,p, T_0}\|T_1-T_0\|_p$ for all Lipschitz functions on $\cir$. Using our Lipschitz estimates, we establish a modified Krein trace formula applicable to a specific category of pairs of contractions featuring Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations.

Abstract:Given two Hölder potentials $\phi_+$ and $\psi_-$ for the unilateral shift, we define anisotropic Banach spaces of distributions on the bilateral shift space with a finite alphabet. On these spaces, the transfer operator for the bilateral shift is quasicompact with a spectral gap, and the unique Gibbs state associated with $\phi_+$ spans its $1$-eigenspace. This result allows us to establish exponential decay of correlations for Hölder observables and a wide range of measures on the bilateral shift space.

Abstract:We establish the existence of a spectral gap for the transfer operator induced on by a generic holomorphic endomorphism and a suitable continuous weight and its perturbations on various functional spaces, which is new even in dimension one. Thanks to the spectral gap, we establish an exponential speed of convergence for the equidistribution of the backward orbits of points towards the conformal measure and the exponential mixing. Moreover, as an immediate consequence, we obtain a full list of statistical properties for the equilibrium states: CLT, Berry-Esseen Theorem, local CLT, ASIP, LIL, LDP, almost sure CLT. Many of these properties are new even in dimension one, some even in the case of zero weight function (i.e., for the measure of maximal entropy).

Abstract:For $0<r<1$, let us consider the following annulus: \[ \mathbb A_r= \{ z\in \mathbb C\, : \, r<|z|<1 \}. \] A Hilbert space operator $T$ for which $\overline{\mathbb A}_r$ is a spectral set is called an $\mathbb A_r$-\textit{contraction}. Also, a normal operator $U$ whose spectrum lies on the boundary $\partial \mathbb A_r$ of $\mathbb A_r$ is called an $\mathbb A_r$-\textit{unitary}. We prove that any $m$ number of commuting normal $\mathbb A_r$-contractions $N_1, \dots , N_m$ can be simultaneously dilated to commuting $\mathbb A_r$-unitaries $U_1, \dots , U_m$. To construct such a dilation, we solve a Dirichlet problem for the polyannulus $\mathbb A_r^m$. Also, we show that any finitely many doubly commuting subnormal $\mathbb A_r$-contractions simultaneously dilate to commuting $\mathbb A_r$-unitaries. Finally, we show that such a simultaneous $\mathbb A_r$-unitary dilation holds for any finite number of doubly commuting $2 \times 2$ scalar $\mathbb A_r$-contractions.

Abstract:In \cite{PRA} and \cite{SSM} the orthonormal Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation associated with the Dunkl Laplacian and the Dunkl-Hermite operator are obtained. In this article, we prove a necessary condition on the Schatten exponent for the above orthonormal Strichartz estimates, which turns out to be optimal for the Schrödinger equations associated with Laplacian and Hermite operator as a special case.

Abstract:We consider a normal operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $H$. Under various assumptions on the spectrum of $T$, we give bounds for the spectrum of $T+A$ where $A$ is $T$-bounded with relative bound less than 1 but we do not assume that $A$ is symmetric or normal. If the imaginary part of the spectrum of $T$ is bounded, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the region between certain hyperbolas whose asymptotic slope depends on the $T$-bound of $A$. If the spectrum of $T$ is contained in a bisector, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the area between certain rotated hyperbola. The case of infinite gaps in the spectrum of $T$ is studied. Moreover, we prove a stability result for the essential spectrum of $T+A$. If $A$ is even $p$-subordinate to $T$, then we obtain stronger results for the localisation of the spectrum of $T+A$.

Abstract:We prove some general Sobolev-type and related inequalities for positive operators A of given ultracontractive spectral decay, without assuming e^{-tA} is submarkovian. These inequalities hold on functions, or pure states, as usual, but also on mixed states, or density operators in the quantum mechanical sense. This provides universal bounds of Faber-Krahn type on domains, that apply to their whole Dirichlet spectrum distribution, not only the first eigenvalue. Another application is given to relate the Novikov-Shubin numbers of coverings of finite simplicial complexes to the vanishing of the torsion of some l^{p,2}-cohomology.
