Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract:Recently, there has been great interest in the application of composition laws to problems in enumerative geometry. Using the moduli space of stable maps, we compute the number of irreducible, reduced, nodal, degree-$d$ genus-$2$ plane curves whose normalization has a fixed complex structure and which pass through $3d - 2$ general points in $\Bbb P^2$.

Abstract:Let $g\colon L\rightarrow L$ be an atoroidal, endperiodic map on an infinite type surface $L$ with no boundary and finitely many ends, each of which is accumulated by genus. By work of Landry, Minsky, and Taylor, $g$ is isotopic to a spun pseudo-Anosov map $f$. We show that spun pseudo-Anosov maps minimize the number of periodic points of period $n$ for sufficiently high $n$ over all maps in their homotopy class, strengthening a theorem of Landry, Minsky, and Taylor. We also show that the same theorem holds for atoroidal Handel--Miller maps when you only consider periodic points that lie in the intersection of the stable and unstable laminations.

Abstract:Every smooth cubic plane curve has 9 inflection points, 27 sextatic points, and 72 “points of type nine". Motivated by these classical algebro-geometric constructions, we study the following topological question: Is it possible to continuously choose n distinct unordered points on each smooth cubic plane curve for a natural number n? This question is equivalent to asking if certain fiber bundle admits a continuous section or not. We prove that the answer is no when n is not a multiple of 9. Our result resolves a conjecture of Benson Farb.
Freely 2-periodic knots have two canonical components

Abstract:We prove that the SL(2, C) character variety of a hyperbolic, freely 2-periodic knot has two canonical components. We also prove that the hyperbolic torsion polynomial of such a knot satisfies a factorization condition which seems to be particularly effective at identifying freely 2-periodic knots.

Abstract:For every $n\ge 6$, we give an example of a finite subset of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ of degree $n$ which does not descend to any Brauer-Severi surface over the field of moduli. Conversely, for every $n\le 5$ we prove that a finite subset of degree $n$ always descends to a $0$-cycle on $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ over the field of moduli.

Abstract:In the note we study the multipoint Seshadri constants of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}}(1)$ centered at singular loci of certain curve arrangements in the complex projective plane. Our first aim is to show that the values of Seshadri constants can be approximated with use of a combinatorial invariant which we call the configurational Seshadri constant. We study specific examples of point-curve configurations for which we provide actual values of the associated Seshadri constants. In particular, we provide an example based on Hesse point-conic configuration for which the associated Seshadri constant is computed by a line. This shows that multipoint Seshadri constants are not purely combinatorial.

Assume that the origin 0=(0,…,0) is an isolated fixed point of both f and the M th iteration f M of f . Then for each factor m of M , the origin is again an isolated fixed point of f m and the fixed point index μ _f^m(0) of f m at the origin is well defined, and so is the (local) Dold’s index [Invent. Math. 74 (3), 419–435 (1983)] at the origin: P_M( f,0) = ∑_τ⊂ P(M)(-1)^#τμ _f^M:τ(0), where P ( M ) is the set of all primes dividing M , the sum extends over all subsets τ of P ( M ), #τis the cardinal number of τ and M: τ =M(∏_p∈τp)^-1 . P M ( f ,0) can be interpreted to be the number of periodic points of period M of f overlapped at the origin: any holomorphic mapping f_1: Δ ^n→ℂ^n sufficiently close to f has exactly P M ( f ,0) distinct periodic points of period M near the origin, provided that all the fixed points of f_1^M near the origin are simple. Note that f itself has no periodic point of period M near the origin if M > 1. According to Shub and Sullivan’s work [Topology 13 , 189–191(1974)] a necessary condition so that P M ( f ,0) ≠ 0 is that the linear part of f at the origin has a periodic point of period M . The goal of this paper is to prove that this condition is sufficient as well for holomorphic mappings.

Abstract:We prove that for C-1 generic diffeomorphisms, every isolated compact invariant set Lambda which satisfies a mild condition on the hyperbolicity of periodic points in Lambda (called the L-NUH condition, see definition 1.1) is hyperbolic. In parallel, we prove that for C-1 diffeomorphisms, every compact invariant set which satisfies Katok's periodic closing property and the L-NUH condition on periodic points is hyperbolic, which is a generalized result of Castro et al (2007 Nonlinearity 20 75-85) for C-2 case with a periodic closing property (called periodic shadowing property in Castro et al (2007 Nonlinearity 20 75-85)).
Locally flat simple spheres in $\mathbb{C} P^2$

Abstract:The fundamental group of the complement of a locally flat surface in a $4$-manifold is called the knot group of the surface. In this article we prove that two locally flat $2$-spheres in $\mathbb{C} P^2$ with knot group $\mathbb{Z}_2$ are ambiently isotopic if they are homologous. This combines with work of Tristram and Lee-Wilczyński, as well as the classification of $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces, to complete a proof of the statement: a class $d \in H_2(\mathbb{C} P^2) \cong \mathbb{Z}$ is represented by a locally flat $2$-sphere with abelian knot group if and only if $|d| \in \lbrace 0,1,2\rbrace$; and this sphere is unique up to ambient isotopy.

We study the following question of Farb: Is it true that the known algebraic structures give all the possible ways to continuously choose n distinct points on every smooth cubic plane curve, for each given positive integer n? We give an affirmative answer to the question when n=9 and 18 (the smallest open cases), and a negative answer for infinitely many n's.

Abstract:Under conjugation by affine transformations, the dynamical moduli space of cubic polynomials $f$ with a $2$-cycle of Siegel disks is parameterized by a three-punctured complex plane as a degree-$2$ cover. Assuming the rotation number of $f^2$ on the Siegel disk is of bounded type, we show that on the three-punctured complex plane, the locus of the cubic polynomials with both finite critical points on the boundaries of the Siegel disks on the $2$-cycle is comprised of two arcs, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundary of the same Siegel disk, and a Jordan curve, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundaries of different Siegel disks.

Abstract:Let $f$ be an $n$-dimensional holomorphic map defined in a neighborhood of the origin such that the origin is an isolated fixed point of all of its iterates, and let ${\mathcal{N}}_{M}(f)$ denote the number of periodic orbits of $f$ of period $M$ hidden at the origin. Gorbovickis gives an efficient way of computing ${\mathcal{N}}_{M}(f)$ for a large class of holomorphic maps. Inspired by Gorbovickis’ work, we establish a similar method for computing ${\mathcal{N}}_{M}(f)$ for a much larger class of holomorphic germs, in particular, having arbitrary Jordan matrices as their linear parts. Moreover, we also give another proof of the result of Gorbovickis [On multi-dimensional Fatou bifurcation. Bull. Sci. Math.138(3)(2014) 356–375] using our method.
2D Locus Configurations and the Charged Trigonometric Calogero-Moser System

Abstract:A central hyperplane arrangement in C^2 with multiplicity is called a `locus configuration' if it satisfies a series of `locus equations' on each hyperplane. Following Chalykh, Feigin and Veselov [CFV99], we demonstrate that the first locus equation for each hyperplane corresponds to a force-balancing equation on a related interacting particle system on C^*: the charged trigonometric Calogero-Moser system. When the particles lie on S^1 in C^*, there is a unique equilibrium for this system. For certain classes of particle weight, this is enough to show that all the locus equations are satisfied, producing explicit examples of real locus configurations. This in turn produces new examples of Schrödinger operators with Baker-Akhiezer functions.

Abstract:It’s well known that the n-sphere S is the universal double covering of the n-dimensional real projective space RP and then any Finsler metric on RP induces a Finsler metric of S. In this paper, we prove that for every Finsler (S, F ) for n ≥ 3 whose metric is induced by irreversible Finsler (RP, F ) with reversibility λ and flag curvature K satisfying ( λ λ+1 ) < K ≤ 1, there exist at least n− 1 prime closed geodesics on (S, F ). Furthermore, if there exist finitely many distinct closed geodesics on (S, F ), then there exist at least 2[ 2 ]−1 of them are non-hyperbolic.
Area-preserving diffeomorphisms on the disk and positive hyperbolic orbits

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that if an area-preserving non-degenerate diffeomorphism on the open disk which extend smoothly to the boundary with non-degeneracy has at least 2 interior periodic points, then there are infinitely many positive hyperbolic periodic points on the interior. As an application, we prove that if a non-degenerate universally tight contact 3-dimentional lens space has a Birkhoff section of disk type and at least 3 simple periodic orbits, there are infinitely many simple positive hyperbolic orbits. In particular, we have that a non-degenerate dynamically convex contact 3-sphere has either infinitely many simple positive hyperbolic orbits or exactly two simple elliptic orbits, which gives a refinement of the result proved by Hofer, Wysocki and Zehnder in \cite{HWZ2} under non-degeneracy.

Subspace configurations and low degree points on curves

Abstract:This paper is devoted to understanding curves $X$ over a number field $k$ that possess infinitely many solutions in extensions of $k$ of degree at most $d$; such solutions are the titular low degree points. For $d=2,3$ it is known (by the work of Harris-Silverman and Abramovich-Harris) that such curves, after a base change to $\overline{k},$ admit a map of degree at most $d$ onto $\mathbb{P}^1$ or an elliptic curve. For $d \geqslant 4$ the analogous statement was shown to be false by Debarre and Fahlaoui. We prove that once the genus of $X$ is high enough, the low degree points still have geometric origin: they can be obtained as pullbacks of low degree points from a lower genus curve. We introduce a discrete-geometric invariant attached to such curves: a family of subspace configurations, with many interesting properties. This structure gives a natural alternative construction of curves with many low degree points, that were first discovered by Debarre and Fahlaoui. As an application of our methods, we obtain a classification of such curves over $k$ for $d=2,3$, and a classification over $\overline{k}$ for $d=4,5$.

Periodic orbits on 2-regular circulant digraphs

Abstract:Periodic orbits (equivalence classes of closed cycles up to cyclic shifts) play an important role in applications of graph theory. For example, they appear in the definition of the Ihara zeta function and exact trace formulae for the spectra of quantum graphs. Circulant graphs are Cayley graphs of $\mathbb{Z}_n$. Here we consider directed Cayley graphs with two generators (2-regular Cayley digraphs). We determine the number of primitive periodic orbits of a given length (total number of directed edges) in terms of the number of times edges corresponding to each generator appear in the periodic orbit (the step count). Primitive periodic orbits are those periodic orbits that cannot be written as a repetition of a shorter orbit. We describe the lattice structure of lengths and step counts for which periodic orbits exist and characterize the repetition number of a periodic orbit by its winding number (the sum of the step sequence divided by the number of vertices) and the repetition number of its step sequence. To obtain these results, we also evaluate the number of Lyndon words on an alphabet of two letters with a given length and letter count.

Generic density of periodic orbits of area-preserving maps on punctured surfaces

Abstract:We study the dynamics of area-preserving maps in a non-compact setting. We show that the $C^{\infty}$-closing lemma holds for area-preserving diffeomorphisms on a closed surface with finitely many points removed. As a corollary, a $C^{\infty}$-generic area-preserving diffeomorphism on such a surface has a dense set of periodic points. For area-preserving maps on a finitely punctured 2-sphere, we establish a more quantitative result regarding the equidistribution of periodic orbits. The proof of this result involves a PFH Weyl law for rational area-preserving homeomorphisms, which may be of independent interest.
