Abstract:We prove that the SL(2, C) character variety of a hyperbolic, freely 2-periodic knot has two canonical components. We also prove that the hyperbolic torsion polynomial of such a knot satisfies a factorization condition which seems to be particularly effective at identifying freely 2-periodic knots.

Abstract:We investigate a polynomial factorization problem which naturally arises in Hartley's factorization condition on the Alexander polynomial of freely periodic knots. We give a number-theoretic interpretation of this factorization condition, which allows for efficient computation. As an application, we prove that any polynomial which is not a product of cyclotomic polynomials can be the Alexander polynomial of a freely $p$-periodic knot for only finitely many $p$. As a demonstration of the computational efficiency of these methods, we also show that the Alexander polynomial of any freely-periodic L-space knot with genus at most 16 must be a product of cyclotomic polynomials. We conjecture that any periodic or freely periodic L-space knot must be an iterated torus knot.

Abstract:The A-polynomial of a knot is defined in terms of SL(2,C) representations of the knot group, and encodes information about essential surfaces in the knot complement. In 2005, Dunfield-Garoufalidis and Boyer-Zhang proved that it detects the unknot using Kronheimer-Mrowka's work on the Property P conjecture. Here we use more recent results from instanton Floer homology to prove that a version of the A-polynomial distinguishes torus knots from all other knots, and in particular detects the torus knot T_{a,b} if and only if one of |a| or |b| is $2$ or both are prime powers. These results enable progress towards a folklore conjecture about boundary slopes of non-torus knots. Finally, we use similar ideas to prove that a knot in the 3-sphere admits infinitely many SL(2,C)-abelian Dehn surgeries if and only if it is a torus knot, affirming a variant of a conjecture due to Sivek-Zentner.

Abstract:In this note, we show that if there is a knot in $S^3$ having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in its Khovanov homology, then there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots and infinitely many prime satellite knots having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in their Khovanov homology. As an application, we give the first known examples of hyperbolic knots and links with odd (and other non-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ torsion) in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:Motivated by the conjectured asymptotics of the Kashaev invariant, Dimofte and the first author introduced a power series associated to a suitable ideal triangulation of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold, proved that its constant (1-loop) term is a topological invariant and conjectured that it equals to the adjoint Reidemeister torsion. We prove this conjecture for hyperbolic 2-bridge knots by combining the work of Ohtsuki--Takata with an explicit computation.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the regulator map of Beilinson-Deligne, we show that the quantization condition posed by Gukov is true for the SL_2(\mathbb{C}) character variety of the hyperbolic knot in S^3. Furthermore, we prove that the corresponding \mathbb{C}^{*}-valued 1-form is a secondary characteristic class (Chern-Simons) arising from the vanishing first Chern class of the flat line bundle over the smooth part of the character variety, where the flat line bundle is the pullback of the universal Heisenberg line bundle over \mathbb{C}^{*}\times \mathbb{C}^{*}. The second part of the paper is to define an algebro-geometric invariant of 3-manifolds resulting from the Dehn surgery along a hyperbolic knot complement in $S^3$. We establish a Casson type invariant for these 3-manifolds. In the last section, we explicitly calculate the character variety of the figure-eight knot and discuss some applications.
Fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, knot Floer homology and the cinquefoil

Abstract:Given any genus-two, hyperbolic, fibered knot in $S^3$ with nonzero fractional Dehn twist coefficient, we show that its pseudo-Anosov representative has a fixed point. Combined with recent work of Baldwin--Hu--Sivek, this proves that knot Floer homology detects the cinquefoil knot $T(2,5)$, and that the cinquefoil is the only genus-two L-space knot in $S^3$. Our results have applications to Floer homology of cyclic branched covers over knots in $S^3$, to $\mathit{SU}(2)$-abelian Dehn surgeries, and to Khovanov and annular Khovanov homology. Along the way to proving our fixed point result, we describe a small list of train tracks carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in most strata on the punctured disk. As a consequence, we find a canonical track $\tau$ carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in a particular stratum $\mathcal{Q}_0$ on the genus-two surface, and describe every fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism in $\mathcal{Q}_0$.

A classification of symmetries of knots

Abstract:We classify all finite group actions on knots in the 3-sphere. By geometrization, all such actions are conjugate to actions by isometries, and so we may use orthogonal representation theory to describe three cyclic and seven dihedral families of symmetries. By constructing examples, we prove that all of the cyclic and four of the dihedral families arise as symmetries of prime knots. The remaining three dihedral families apply only to composite knots. We also explain how to distinguish different types of symmetries of knots using diagrammatic or topological data. Our classification immediately implies a previous result of Sakuma: a hyperbolic knot cannot be both freely periodic and amphichiral. In passing, we establish two technical results: one concerning finite cyclic or dihedral subgroups of isometries of the 3-sphere and another concerning linking numbers of symmetric knots.

Abstract:We introduce an invariant of a hyperbolic knot which is a map $\alpha\mapsto \boldsymbol{\Phi}_\alpha(h)$ from $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ to matrices with entries in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}[[h]]$ and with rows and columns indexed by the boundary parabolic ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ representations of the fundamental group of the knot. These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(\sigma_0,\sigma_1)$ entry, where $\sigma_0$ is the trivial and $\sigma_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2\pi{\rm i} \alpha}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_\gamma$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbol{\Phi}(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ and $W_\gamma$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.

Abstract:A surgery on a knot in 3-sphere is called SU(2)-cyclic if it gives a manifold whose fundamental group has no non-cyclic SU(2) representations. Using holonomy perturbations on the Chern-Simons functional, we prove that the distance of two SU(2)-cyclic surgery coefficients is bounded by the sum of the absolute values of their numerators. This is an analog of Culler-Gordon-Luecke-Shalen's cyclic surgery theorem.

Abstract:Conjecturally, a knot in the 3-sphere has only finitely many non-integer non-characterizing slopes. We verify this conjecture for all knots with knot Floer homology satisfying certain simplicity conditions. The class of knots satisfying our notion of simplicity includes alternating knots, $L$-space knots and the vast majority of knots with at most 12 crossings. For arbitrary knots in the 3-sphere we show that almost all slopes $p/q$ with $|q|\geq 3$ are characterizing. In addition, we show that all $L$-space knots and almost $L$-space knots have infinitely many integer characterizing slopes.

Abstract:In 1979, Hartley and Kawauchi proved that the Conway polynomial of a strongly negative amphichiral knot factors as $f(z)f(-z)$. In this paper, we normalize the factor $f(z)$ to define the half-Conway polynomial. First, we prove that the half-Conway polynomial satisfies an equivariant skein relation, giving the first feasible computational method, which we use to compute the half-Conway polynomial for knots with 12 or fewer crossings. This skein relation also leads to a diagrammatic interpretation of the degree-one coefficient, from which we obtain a lower bound on the equivariant unknotting number. Second, we completely characterize polynomials arising as half-Conway polynomials of knots in $S^3$, answering a problem of Hartley-Kawauchi. As a special case, we construct the first examples of non-slice strongly negative amphichiral knots with determinant one, answering a question of Manolescu. The double branched covers of these knots provide potentially non-trivial torsion elements in the homology cobordism group.

Abstract:A 2-sphere embedded in the 4-sphere invariant under a circle action is called a branched twist spin. A branched twist spin is constructed from a 1-knot in the 3-sphere and a pair of coprime integers uniquely. In this paper, we study, for each pair of coprime integers, if two different 1-knots yield the same branched twist spin, and prove that such a pair of 1-knots does not exist in most cases. Fundamental groups of 3-orbifolds of cyclic type are obtained as quotient groups of the fundamental groups of the complements of branched twist spins. We use these groups for distinguishing branched twist spins.

A unified Casson-Lin invariant for the real forms of SL(2)

Abstract:We introduce a unified framework for counting representations of knot groups into $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$. For a knot $K$ in the 3-sphere, Lin and others showed that a Casson-style count of $SU(2)$ representations with fixed meridional holonomy recovers the signature function of $K$. For knots whose complement contains no closed essential surface, we show there is an analogous count for $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations. We then prove the $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ count is determined by the $SU(2)$ count and a single integer $h(K)$, allowing us to show the existence of various $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations using only elementary topological hypotheses. Combined with the translation extension locus of Culler-Dunfield, we use this to prove left-orderability of many 3-manifold groups obtained by cyclic branched covers and Dehn fillings on broad classes of knots. We give further applications to the existence of real parabolic representations, including a generalization of the Riley Conjecture (proved by Gordon) to alternating knots. These invariants exhibit some intriguing patterns that deserve explanation, and we include many open questions. The close connection between $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ comes from viewing their representations as the real points of the appropriate $SL(2, \mathbb{C})$ character variety. While such real loci are typically highly singular at the reducible characters that are common to both $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$, in the relevant situations, we show how to resolve these real algebraic sets into smooth manifolds. We construct these resolutions using the geometric transition $S^2 \to \mathbb{E}^2 \to \mathbb{H}^2$, studied from the perspective of projective geometry, and they allow us to pass between Casson-Lin counts of $SU(2)$ and $SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ representations unimpeded.

Abstract:In 2010, Turaev introduced knotoids as a variation on knots that replaces the embedding of a circle with the embedding of a closed interval with two endpoints which here we call poles. We define generalised knotoids to allow arbitrarily many poles, intervals and circles, each pole corresponding to any number of interval endpoints, including zero. This theory subsumes a variety of other related topological objects and introduces some particularly interesting new cases. We explore various analogs of knotoid invariants, including height, index polynomials, bracket polynomials and hyperbolicity. We further generalise to knotoidal graphs, which are a natural extension of spatial graphs that allow both poles and vertices.

Smooth Knots with Odd Quadratic Term of the Conway Polynomial Have Inscribed Trefoils

Abstract:An inscribed knot is formed by polygonally connecting points lying on a knot $\gamma$ in parametric order, then closing the path by connecting the first and final points. The stick-knot number of a knot type K is the minimum number of line segments needed to polygonally form some knot with the same homotopy type. The stick-knot number of a trefoil is 6. Cole Hugelmeyer studied the manifold $M$ consisting of 6 points lying on a triangular prism and found that by intersecting a perturbation of $M'$, twisting the top of the prism, with $Q_\gamma$, the manifold of 6-tuples of points lying on $\gamma$, any analytic knot with nontrivial quadratic term of its Conway polynomial has an inscribed trefoil. We show that by using a perturbation of the double-cover of the orientation class $[M \cap Q_\gamma]$ and analysis of planar configurations, an analogous result holds for a class of smooth knots with odd quadratic term. We also show that in the analytic case, there are both inscribed left and right-handed trefoils.

Abstract:We report site testing results obtained in night-time during the polar autumn and winter at Dome C. These results were collected during the first Concordia winterover by A. Agabi. They are based upon seeing and isoplanatic angle monitoring, as well as in-situ balloon measurements 2 of the refractive index structure constant profiles Cn (h). Atmosphere is divided into two regions: (i) a 36 m high surface layer responsible of 87% of the turbulence and (ii) a very stable free atmosphere above with a median seeing of 0.36+-0.19 arcsec at an elevation of h = 30 m. The median seeing measured with a DIMM placed on top of a 8.5 m high tower is 1.3+-0.8 arcsec.
