Abstract:The $k$th module of a surface-knot of a genus $g$ in the 4-sphere is the $k$th integral homology module of the infinite cyclic covering of the surface-knot complement. The reduced first module is the quotient module of the first module by the finite sub-module defining the torsion linking. It is shown that the reduced first module for every genus $g$ is characterized in terms of properties of a finitely generated module. As a by-product, a concrete example of the fundamental group of a surface-knot of genus $g$ which is not the fundamental group of any surface-knot of genus $g-1$ is given for every $g>0$. The torsion part and the torsion-free part of the second module are determined by the reduced first module and the genus-class on the reduced first module. The third module vanishes. The concept of an exact leaf of a surface-knot is introduced, whose linking is an orthogonal sum of the torsion linking and a hyperbolic linking.

Abstract:A marked strongly invertible knot is a triple $(K,h,\delta)$ of a knot $K$ in $S^3$, a strong inversion $h$ of $K$, and a subarc $\delta \subset \operatorname{Fix}(h)\cong S^1$ bounded by $\operatorname{Fix}(h)\cap K\cong S^0$. An invariant Seifert surface for $(K,h,\delta)$ is an $h$-invariant Seifert surface for $K$ that intersects $\operatorname{Fix}(h)$ in the arc $\delta$. In this paper, we completely determine the equivariant genus (the minimum of the genera of invariant Seifert surfaces for $(K,h,\delta)$) of every marked strongly invertible knot $(K,h,\delta)$ with $K$ a $2$-bridge knot.

A lower bound for the genus of a knot using the Links-Gould invariant

Abstract:The Links-Gould invariant of links $LG^{2,1}$ is a two-variable generalization of the Alexander-Conway polynomial. Using representation theory of $U_{q}\mathfrak{gl}(2 \vert 1)$, we prove that the degree of the Links-Gould polynomial provides a lower bound on the Seifert genus of any knot, therefore improving the bound known as the Seifert inequality in the case of the Alexander invariant. One practical consequence of this new genus bound is a straightforward proof of the fact that the Kinoshita-Terasaka and Conway knots have genus greater or equal to 2.

Abstract:We prove that the SL(2, C) character variety of a hyperbolic, freely 2-periodic knot has two canonical components. We also prove that the hyperbolic torsion polynomial of such a knot satisfies a factorization condition which seems to be particularly effective at identifying freely 2-periodic knots.

Abstract:While the problem of computing the genus of a knot is now fairly well understood, no algorithm is known for its four-dimensional variants, both in the smooth and in the topological locally flat category. In this article, we investigate a class of knots and links called Hopf arborescent links, which are obtained as the boundaries of some iterated plumbings of Hopf bands. We show that for such links, computing the genus defects, which measure how much the four-dimensional genera differ from the classical genus, is decidable. Our proof is non-constructive, and is obtained by proving that Seifert surfaces of Hopf arborescent links under a relation of minors defined by containment of their Seifert surfaces form a well-quasi-order.

Abstract:We introduce an invariant of a hyperbolic knot which is a map $\alpha\mapsto \boldsymbol{\Phi}_\alpha(h)$ from $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ to matrices with entries in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}[[h]]$ and with rows and columns indexed by the boundary parabolic ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ representations of the fundamental group of the knot. These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(\sigma_0,\sigma_1)$ entry, where $\sigma_0$ is the trivial and $\sigma_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2\pi{\rm i} \alpha}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_\gamma$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbol{\Phi}(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ and $W_\gamma$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.

Quotients of the mapping class group by power subgroups

Abstract:We study the quotient of the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n$ of a surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, by the subgroup $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n[p]$ generated by the $p$-th powers of Dehn twists. Our first main result is that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^1 /\operatorname{Mod}_g^1[p]$ contains an infinite normal subgroup of infinite index, and in particular is not commensurable to a higher-rank lattice, for all but finitely many explicit values of $p$. Next, we prove that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$ contains a Kähler subgroup of finite index, for every $p\ge 2$ coprime with six. Finally, we observe that the existence of finite-index subgroups of $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0$ with infinite abelianization is equivalent to the analogous problem for $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$.

Abstract:The Dehn quandle of a closed orientable surface is the set of isotopy classes of nonseparating simple closed curves with a natural quandle structure arising from Dehn twists. In this paper, we consider the finiteness of some canonical quotients of these quandles. For a surface of positive genus, we give a precise description of the 2-quandle of its Dehn quandle. Further, with some exceptions for genus more than 2, we determine all values of n for which the n-quandle of its Dehn quandle is finite. The result can be thought of as the Dehn quandle analogue of a similar result of Hoste and Shanahan for link quandles ['Links with finite n-quandles', Algebr. Geom. Topol.17(5) (2017), 2807–2823]. We also compute the size of the smallest nontrivial quandle quotient of the Dehn quandle of a surface. Along the way, we prove that the involutory quotient of an Artin quandle is precisely the corresponding Coxeter quandle, and also determine the smallest nontrivial quotient of a braid quandle.

A Ball Quotient Parametrizing Trigonal Genus 4 Curves

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of genus 4 curves endowed with a $g<^>1_3$ (which maps with degree 2 onto the moduli space of genus 4 curves). We prove that it defines a degree $\frac {1}{2}(3<^>{10}-1)$ cover of the nine-dimensional Deligne-Mostow ball quotient such that the natural divisors that live on that moduli space become totally geodesic (their normalizations are eight-dimensional ball quotients). This isomorphism differs from the one considered by S. Kondo, and its construction is perhaps more elementary, as it does not involve K3 surfaces and their Torelli theorem: the Deligne-Mostow ball quotient parametrizes certain cyclic covers of degree 6 of a projective line and we show how a level structure on such a cover produces a degree 3 cover of that line with the same discriminant, yielding a genus 4 curve endowed with a $g<^>1_3$.

Abstract:The authors conjectured previously that a knot is nonfibered if and only if its infinite cyclic cover has uncountably many finite covers. We prove the conjecture for a class of knots that includes all knots of genus 1, using techniques from symbolic dynamics.

Unknotted Curves on Seifert Surfaces

Abstract:We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figure eight knot admits infinitely many unknotted essential curves up to isotopy on its genus one Seifert surface, and those curves are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, we prove that many twist knots admit homologically essential curves that cannot be positive or negative braid closures. Indeed, among those curves, we exhibit an example of a slice but not unknotted homologically essential simple closed curve. We further investigate our study of unknotted essential curves for arbitrary Whitehead doubles of non-trivial knots, and obtain that there is a precisely one unknotted essential simple closed curve in the interior of the doubles' standard genus one Seifert surface. As a consequence of all these we obtain many new examples of 3-manifolds that bound contractible 4-manifolds.

Abstract:Previous work of the authors establishes a criterion on the fundamental group of a knot complement that determines when Dehn surgery on the knot will have a fundamental group that is not left-orderable. We provide a refinement of this criterion by introducing the notion of a decayed knot; it is shown that Dehn surgery on decayed knots produces surgery manifolds that have non-left-orderable fundamental group for all sufficiently positive surgeries. As an application, we prove that sufficiently positive cables of decayed knots are always decayed knots. These results mirror properties of L-space surgeries in the context of Heegaard Floer homology.

We study the structure of the augmented fundamental quandle of a knot whose complement contains an incompressible torus. We obtain the relationship between the fundamental quandle of a satellite knot and the fundamental quandles/groups of its companion and pattern knots. General presentations of the fundamental quandles of a link in a solid torus, a link in a lens space and a satellite knot are described. In the last part of this paper, an algebraic approach to the study of affine quandles is presented and some known results about the Alexander module and quandle colorings are obtained.

Abstract:We discuss a matrix of periodic holomorphic functions in the upper and lower half-plane which can be obtained from a factorization of an Andersen-Kashaev state integral of a knot complement with remarkable analytic and asymptotic properties that defines a ${\rm PSL}_2({\mathbb Z})$-cocycle on the space of matrix-valued piecewise analytic functions on the real numbers. We identify the corresponding cocycle with the one coming from the Kashaev invariant of a knot (and its matrix-valued extension) via the refined quantum modularity conjecture of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.06645" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.06645">arXiv:2111.06645</a>] and also relate the matrix-valued invariant with the 3D-index of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov. The cocycle also has an analytic extendability property that leads to the notion of a matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular form. This is a tale of several independent discoveries, both empirical and theoretical, all illustrated by the three simplest hyperbolic knots.

Abstract:We provide three 3-dimensional characterizations of the Z-slice genus of a knot, the minimal genus of a locally-flat surface in 4-space cobounding the knot whose complement has cyclic fundamental group: in terms of balanced algebraic unknotting, in terms of Seifert surfaces, and in terms of presentation matrices of the Blanchfield pairing. This result generalizes to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere and surfaces in certain simply connected signature zero 4-manifolds cobounding this homology sphere. Using the Blanchfield characterization, we obtain effective lower bounds for the Z-slice genus from the linking pairing of the double branched covering of the knot. In contrast, we show that for odd primes p, the linking pairing on the first homology of the p-fold branched covering is determined up to isometry by the action of the deck transformation group on said first homology. As an application of the new upper and lower bounds, we complete the calculation of the Z-slice genus for all prime knots with crossing number up to 12.

Abstract:We exhibit an infinite family of knots with isomorphic knot Heegaard Floer homology. Each knot in this infinite family admits a nontrivial genus two mutant which shares the same total dimension in both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology. Each knot is distinguished from its genus two mutant by both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology as bigraded groups. Additionally, for both knot Heegaard Floer homology and Khovanov homology, the genus two mutation interchanges the groups in $\delta$-gradings $k$ and $-k$.

Abstract:We show that every nonzero integer occurs as the denominator of a boundary slope for infinitely many (1,1)-knots and that infinitely many (1,1)-knots have boundary slopes of arbitrarily small difference. Specifically, we prove that for any integers m,n>1$$m,n>1$$ with n odd the exterior of the Montesinos knot K(-1/2,m/(2m±1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m\pm 1),1/n)$$ in S3$$S^3$$ contains an essential surface with boundary slope r=2(n-1)2/n$$r = 2(n-1)^2/n$$ if m is even and 2(n+1)2/n$$2(n+1)^2/n$$ if m is odd. If n≥4m+1$$n \ge 4m + 1$$, we prove that K(-1/2,m/(2m+1),1/n)$$K(-1/2, m/(2m+1),1/n)$$ also has a boundary slope whose difference with r is (8m-2)/(n2-4mn+n)$$(8m-2)/(n^2-4mn+n)$$, which decreases to 0 as n increases. All of these knots are (1,1)-knots.
Fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, knot Floer homology and the cinquefoil

Abstract:Given any genus-two, hyperbolic, fibered knot in $S^3$ with nonzero fractional Dehn twist coefficient, we show that its pseudo-Anosov representative has a fixed point. Combined with recent work of Baldwin--Hu--Sivek, this proves that knot Floer homology detects the cinquefoil knot $T(2,5)$, and that the cinquefoil is the only genus-two L-space knot in $S^3$. Our results have applications to Floer homology of cyclic branched covers over knots in $S^3$, to $\mathit{SU}(2)$-abelian Dehn surgeries, and to Khovanov and annular Khovanov homology. Along the way to proving our fixed point result, we describe a small list of train tracks carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in most strata on the punctured disk. As a consequence, we find a canonical track $\tau$ carrying all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms in a particular stratum $\mathcal{Q}_0$ on the genus-two surface, and describe every fixed-point-free pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism in $\mathcal{Q}_0$.

Abstract:To a Seifert matrix of a knot K one can associate a matrix w(K) with entries in the rational function field, Q(t). The Murasugi, Milnor, and Levine-Tristram knot signatures, all of which provide bounds on the 4-genus of a knot, are determined by w(K). More generally, the minimal rank of a representative of the class represented by w(K) in the Witt group of hermitian forms over Q(t) provides a lower bound for the 4-genus of K. Here we describe an easily computed new bound on the minimal rank of the class represented by w(K). Furthermore, this lower bound is complete modulo torsion in the Witt group. Specifically, if the bound on the rank is M, then 4w(K) has a representative of rank exactly 4M. Applications to explicit knots are given, finding 4-genus bounds for specific knots that are unattainable via other approaches.

A characterization of quasipositive two-bridge knots

Abstract:We prove a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a two-bridge knot K(p,q) to be quasipositive, based on the continued fraction expansion of p/q. As an application, coupled with some classification results in contact and symplectic topology, we give a new proof of the fact that smoothly slice two-bridge knots are non-quasipositive. Another proof of this fact using methods within the scope of knot theory is presented in the Appendix.
