Abstract:We define and characterize the Krein space numerical range $W(A)$ and the Krein space co-numerical range $W_{\rm co}(A)$ of a non-negative operator $A$ in a Krein space. It is shown that the non-zero spectrum of $A$ is contained in the closure of $W(A)\cap W_{\rm co}(A)$.

Abstract:Let be the collection of bounded linear operators on a complex separable Hilbert space . For , its numerical range and maximal numerical range are denoted by W ( T ) and , respectively. First, we give in this paper a characterization of the maximal numerical range and, as applications, we determine maximal numerical ranges of weighted shifts, partial isometries, the Volterra integral operator and classical Toeplitz operators. Second, we study the universality of maximal numerical ranges, showing that any nonempty bounded convex closed subset of is the maximal numerical range of some operator. Finally, we discuss the relations among the numerical range, the maximal numerical range and the spectrum. It is shown that the collection of those operators T with is a nonempty open subset of precisely when , and is dense precisely when . We also show that those operators T with constitute a nowhere dense subset of precisely when

Abstract:Relying on some ideas of numerical ranges, we introduce, for operators polynomials on a complex Hilbert space, a new notion called the -numerical range of operators polynomials. Some geometrical and topological properties of these -numerical range are proved. Thereby, we achieve a new characterization of -numerical range of operators polynomials on an arbitrary Hilbert space. All our results are new even for -matrix polynomials.

Abstract:We investigate when the algebraic numerical range is a $C$-spectral set in a Banach algebra. While providing several counterexamples based on classical ideas as well as combinatorial Banach spaces, we discuss positive results for matrix algebras and provide an absolute constant in the case of complex $2\times2$-matrices with the induced $1$-norm. Furthermore, we discuss positive results for infinite-dimensional Banach algebras, including the Calkin algebra.

A note on the $A$-numerical range of semi-Hilbertian operators

Abstract:In this paper we explore the relation between the $A$-numerical range and the $A$-spectrum of $A$-bounded operators in the setting of semi-Hilbertian structure. We introduce a new definition of $A$-normal operator and prove that closure of the $A$-numerical range of an $A$-normal operator is the convex hull of the $A$-spectrum. We further prove Anderson's theorem for the sum of $A$-normal and $A$-compact operators which improves and generalizes the existing result on Anderson's theorem for $A$-compact operators. Finally we introduce strongly $A$-numerically closed class of operators and along with other results prove that the class of $A$-normal operators is strongly $A$-numerically closed.

In particular, characterization is given to the operators attaining the optimal ratio, and properties of such operators are explored.

Abstract:We study operators acting on a tensor product Hilbert space and investigate their product numerical range, product numerical radius and separable numerical range. Concrete bounds for the product numerical range for Hermitian operators are derived. Product numerical range of a non-Hermitian operator forms a subset of the standard numerical range containing the barycenter of the spectrum. While the latter set is convex, the product range needs not to be convex nor simply connected. The product numerical range of a tensor product is equal to the Minkowski product of numerical ranges of individual factors.

For two bounded operators B and C on H , we denote by M2,B,C the basic elementary operator on the class of Hilbert–Schmidt operators C2(H) , i.e. M2,B,C(X)=BXC for all X∈C2(H) . In this paper, we investigate the A -numerical range WA(M2,B,(C♯A)∗) and the A -maximal numerical range WmaxA(M2,B,(C♯A)∗) , where A=M2,A,A , C♯A is the reduced solution of the equation AX=C∗A and C∗ is the adjoint of C . On the Operators with Numerical Range in an Ellipse

Abstract:We give new necessary and sufficient conditions for the numerical range $W(T)$ of an operator $T \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ to be a subset of the closed elliptical set $K_\delta \subseteq \mathbb{C}$ given by \[ K_\delta {\stackrel{\rm def}{=}} \left\{x+iy: \frac{x^2}{(1+\delta)^2} + \frac{y^2}{(1-\delta)^2} \leq 1\right\}, \] where $0 < \delta < 1$. Here $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ denotes the collection of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Central to our efforts is a direct generalization of Berger's well-known criterion for an operator to have numerical radius at most one, his so-called strange dilation theorem. We next generalize the lemma of Sarason that describes power dilations in terms of semi-invariant subspaces to operators $T$ that satisfy appropriate dilation properties. This generalization yields a characterization of the operators $T\in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ such that $W(T)$ is contained in $K_\delta$ in terms of certain structured contractions that act on $\mathcal{H} \oplus \mathcal{H}$. As a corollary of our results we extend Ando's parametrization of operators having numerical range in a disc to those $T$ such that $W(T)\subseteq K_\delta$. We prove that, if $T$ acts on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, then $W(T)\subseteq K_\delta$ if and only if there exist a pair of contractions $A,B \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ such that $A$ is self-adjoint and \[ T=2\sqrt\delta A + (1-\delta)\sqrt{1+A}\ B\sqrt{1-A}. \] We also obtain a formula for the B. and F. Delyon calcular norm of an analytic function on the inside of an ellipse in terms of the extremal $H^\infty$-extension problem for analytic functions defined on a slice of the symmetrized bidisc.

Abstract:It is a classical result that, if a maximal symmetric operator $T$ in a Krein space $\mathcal{H}=\mathcal{H}^-[\oplus]\mathcal{H}^+$ has the property $\mathcal{H}^-\subseteq\mathcal{D}_T$, then the imaginary part of its eigenvalue $\lambda$ from upper or lower half-plane is bounded by $\lvert \mathrm{Im}\,\lambda\rvert\leq2\lVert TP^- \rVert$. We prove that in both half-planes $\lvert \mathrm{Im}\,\lambda\rvert$ never exceeds $t_0\lVert TP^- \rVert$ for some constant $t_0\approx1.84$. The result applies to a closed symmetric relation $T$ and carries on a suitable, most notably dissipative, extension.

Abstract:We discuss what can be said about the numerical range of the matrix product $A_1A_2$ when the numerical ranges of $A_1$ and $A_2$ are known. If two compact convex subsets $K_1, K_2$ of the complex plane are given, we discuss the issue of finding a compact convex subset $K$ such that whenever $A_j$ ($j=1,2$) are either unrestricted matrices or normal matrices of the same shape with $W(A_j) \subseteq K_j$, it follows that $W(A_1A_2) \subseteq K$. We do this by defining specific deviation quantities for both the unrestricted case and the normal case.

Abstract:We show that a positive operator between $L^p$-spaces is given by integration against a kernel function if and only if the image of each positive function has a lower semi-continuous representative with respect to a suitable topology. This is a consequence of a new characterization of kernel operators on general Banach lattices as those operators whose range can be represented over a fixed countable set of positive vectors. Similar results are shown to hold for operators that merely dominate a non-trivial kernel operator.

Abstract:The higher-rank numerical range is a convex compact set generalizing the classical numerical range of a square complex matrix, first appearing in the study of quantum error correction. We will discuss some of the real algebraic and convex geometry of these sets, including a generalization of Kippenhahn's theorem, and describe an algorithm to explicitly calculate the higher-rank numerical range of a given matrix.

Abstract:A proof using the theory of completely positive maps is given to the fact that if $A \in M_2$, or $A \in M_3$ has a reducing eigenvalue, then every bounded linear operator $B$ with $W(B) \subseteq W(A)$ has a dilation of the form $I \otimes A$. This gives a unified treatment for the different cases of the result obtained by researchers using different techniques.
