Abstract:In this letter, we revisit the non-restricted half-duplex Gaussian amplify-and-forward two-way relay channel (AF-TWRC). The inner and outer bounds of its capacity region are derived by evaluating Shannon's inner and outer bounds for general two-way channels. We prove that, in contrast to the case of Gaussian two-way channel (GTWC) where the two bounds coincide thus establishing its capacity region, the two bounds of AF-TWRC do not coincide unless both terminals are noise-free, due to that the intermediate relay node introduces additional power constraint relating to the correlation of channel inputs from both terminals. This indicates that the capacity region of non-restricted Gaussian AF-TWRC, which was previously believed to be already established in a way similar to that of GTWC, still remains open. We further investigate a special case of non-restricted AF-TWRC where the relay is noise-free, and obtain its capacity region based on the tighter dependence balance bound.

Abstract:This paper provides new insight into the classical problem of determining both the capacity of the discrete-time channel with uniform output quantization and the capacity achieving input distribution. It builds on earlier work by Gallager and Witsenhausen to provide a detailed analysis of two particular quantization schemes. The first is saturation quantization where overflows are mapped to the nearest quantization bin, and the second is wrapping quantization where overflows are mapped to the nearest quantization bin after reduction by some modulus. Both the capacity of wrapping quantization and the capacity achieving input distribution are determined. When the additive noise is gaussian and relatively small, the capacity of saturation quantization is shown to be bounded below by that of wrapping quantization. In the limit of arbitrarily many uniform quantization levels, it is shown that the difference between the upper and lower bounds on capacity given by Ihara is only 0.26 bits.

Abstract:We reexamine the time-delay formalism of Wigner, Eisenbud and Smith, which was developed to analyze both elastic and inelastic resonances. An error in the paper of Smith has propagated through the literature. We correct this error and show how the results of Eisenbud and Smith are related. We also comment on some recent time-delay studies, based on Smith's erroneous interpretation of the Eisenbud result.

Abstract:In the above article \cite{shmuel2021private}, the authors introduced a PIR scheme for the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) Multiple Access Channel (MAC), both with and without fading. The authors utilized the additive nature of the channel and leveraged the linear properties and structure of lattice codes to retrieve the desired message without the servers acquiring any knowledge about the retrieved message's index. Theorems 3 and 4 in \cite{shmuel2021private} contain an error arising from the incorrect usage of the modulo operator. Moreover, the proofs assume a one-to-one mapping function, $\phi(\cdot)$, between a message $W_j\in\mathbb{F}_p^L$ and the elements of $\cC$, mistakenly suggesting that the user possesses all the required information in advance. % \st{However, this is not the case.} \textcolor{black}{To deal with that, we defined $\phi(\cdot)$ as a one-to-one mapping function between a vector of $l$ information bits and a lattice point $\lambda\in\cC$}. Herein, we present the corrected versions of these theorems.

Abstract:Shannon theory is revisited to show that ergodicity is an indispensable element of channel capacity. The generalized channel capacity $C=\sup_{\bm{X}}\underline{I}(\bm{X}; \bm{Y})$ is checked with a negative conclusion and the popular assertion "the capacity of a slow fading channel is zero in strict Shannon sense" is found to be conceptually wrong.

Abstract:Abstract A general capacity formula C = supX I(X;Y ), which is correct for arbitrary single-user channels without feedback, is introduced in this tutorial. Abstract:We study non-asymptotic fundamental limits for transmitting classical information over memoryless quantum channels, i.e. we investigate the amount of classical information that can be transmitted when a quantum channel is used a finite number of times and a fixed, non-vanishing average error is permissible. We consider the classical capacity of quantum channels that are image-additive, including all classical to quantum channels, as well as the product state capacity of arbitrary quantum channels. In both cases we show that the non-asymptotic fundamental limit admits a second-order approximation that illustrates the speed at which the rate of optimal codes converges to the Holevo capacity as the blocklength tends to infinity. The behavior is governed by a new channel parameter, called channel dispersion, for which we provide a geometrical interpretation.
